00:00Albert Einstein, The Genius Who Changed Everything
00:03Our story begins in 1879, the year that Albert Einstein was born.
00:10Let me set the scene for you.
00:12It's a blustery spring day in the city of Ulm in southwest Germany.
00:17As rain lashes against the window panes,
00:19a small group of people are seated in an otherwise empty room.
00:23They are gathered around a cradle to welcome the newborn son of Hermann and Pauline Einstein.
00:28The child will be named Albert, after his maternal grandfather,
00:33and though no one could have guessed it at the time,
00:36this quiet and seemingly unremarkable birth would change the world forever.
00:43As we look out over the sleeping face of the infant Einstein,
00:46a soft, lilting classical melody fills the air.
00:51We pan across the faces of family members who have come to meet the new baby.
00:55There's Albert's father, Hermann, a successful engineer and businessman,
01:01and his mother, Pauline, a former teacher who is known for her gentle and caring nature.
01:07The young Einsteins are soon joined by their second child, a daughter they name Margot.
01:13The two siblings grow up sharing a deep bond, though they are quite different from one another.
01:18Albert is a quiet and thoughtful boy, while Margot is more energetic and outgoing.
01:24Their parents do their best to provide them with a happy and stable childhood,
01:29but this is not always easy.
01:31When Albert is two, his father loses most of his fortune in a failed business deal,
01:37forcing the family to move to a smaller apartment.
01:40Despite the financial struggles, Albert's parents continue to dote on their children
01:46and try to shield them from the difficulties they are facing.
01:50When Albert is four, his father gives him a special gift,
01:53a compass which sparks a lifelong fascination with science.
01:58Young Albert is mesmerised by the invisible forces that control the needle of the compass
02:03and spends hours exploring this phenomenon.
02:06His mother encourages his curiosity and buys him books about science and mathematics.
02:13Albert devours these books, showing an early aptitude for learning.
02:17Albert Einstein didn't start talking until he was almost four years old.
02:21Can you believe that?
02:22This worries his family, who consult with doctors and teachers,
02:26but Albert's late development is put down to his introverted personality,
02:30and the Einsteins are assured that he will eventually catch up to his peers.
02:35When Albert is six, his family moves again, this time to Italy.
02:41Here, Albert attends a local school, but he quickly clashes with his teachers.
02:46They find him to be a lazy and unfocused student
02:49who is not interested in memorising facts or following rules.
02:53Albert, in turn, resents the teacher's unimaginative methods
02:57and their inability to inspire him to learn.
03:00He prefers to spend his time exploring the natural world around him
03:04and reading books on his own.
03:07At age seven, Albert returns to Germany to attend school in Munich.
03:12He continues to struggle with traditional schooling,
03:15finding it difficult to memorise information
03:18and unwilling to conform to the expectations of his teachers.
03:22Once again, he prefers to explore the world on his own terms,
03:26spending hours at the public library reading books on science and philosophy.
03:31Albert's independent streak and refusal to follow the rules
03:34get him into trouble with his teachers.
03:37They consider him to be a disruptive influence
03:39and often punish him for his behaviour.
03:42However, there is one teacher who recognises Albert's unique abilities,
03:46a kindly older woman named Jetta.
03:49She encourages his love of learning
03:51and becomes one of the few adults who truly understands him.
03:55By age twelve, it is clear that Albert is not like other children.
03:59He has a brilliant mind that is capable of great things,
04:03but his unconventional thinking and refusal to conform
04:06make it difficult for him to succeed in school.
04:10In fact, Albert is so frustrated with his schooling
04:12that he decides to stop attending classes altogether.
04:16Instead, he spends his time travelling around Europe with his family,
04:20experiencing new cultures and broadening his horizons.
04:24During this time, Albert's interest in science and philosophy only grows.
04:30He reads voraciously, devouring books on topics
04:33that most twelve-year-olds would not be able to comprehend.
04:37It is during this period of his life
04:39that Albert develops his lifelong love of learning.
04:43Though he is no longer a student,
04:45Albert continues to educate himself,
04:47exploring the world and its wonders
04:50with the insatiable curiosity of a true polymath.
04:54Now, although Albert is no longer formally educated,
04:57his thirst for knowledge does not abate.
05:00Instead, he delves deeper into the world of science and philosophy,
05:04reading extensively and forming his own opinions
05:07on the nature of the universe.
05:09In 1889, when Albert is ten,
05:12the family returns to Munich,
05:14where his father rebuilds his career,
05:17and the family enjoys a comfortable middle-class lifestyle once more.
05:21Albert is able to enrol in a Swiss school,
05:23but once again finds it difficult to conform to the strict rules
05:27and expectations of his teachers.
05:29He clashes with them over their unimaginative teaching methods
05:33and refuses to memorise facts and figures.
05:35He much prefers to explore the world on his own terms,
05:40reading books and thinking deeply about the nature of reality.
05:44In particular, Albert becomes fascinated
05:46by the works of the renowned physicist James Clerk Maxwell,
05:50whose theories on electromagnetism
05:52had revolutionised the understanding of the physical world.
05:56Maxwell's ideas spark a passion in Albert,
05:58driving him to explore the mysteries of the universe for himself.
06:02However, Albert's free-spirited approach to learning
06:05does not go over well with his teachers,
06:08who see him as a lazy and unmotivated student.
06:11They fail to recognise his brilliance
06:14and punish him for his unwillingness to conform.
06:17Frustrated and disillusioned with the educational system,
06:20Albert eventually drops out of school altogether,
06:24choosing instead to educate himself
06:26outside the confines of a classroom.
06:29Driven by his passion for science,
06:30Albert immerses himself in the works of great thinkers
06:33who came before him,
06:35studying their ideas and theories with a critical eye.
06:39He reads widely,
06:40exploring topics that interest him
06:42and developing his own unique perspective on the world.
06:46At sixteen, Albert moves to Switzerland
06:48to attend the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich,
06:51where he hopes to study engineering.
06:54However, he soon finds
06:55that this school is no different from the others
06:58he has attended in the past.
07:00The teachers are strict and unimaginative
07:02and expect students to memorise facts
07:04rather than explore new ideas.
07:07Albert's independent streak and refusal to conform
07:09once again get him into trouble with the authorities.
07:13He clashes with his teachers
07:15and is punished for his behaviour.
07:17Determined to pursue his own path,
07:19Albert eventually drops out of school
07:21and moves to Italy,
07:23where he takes on odd jobs
07:24to support himself while continuing his studies.
07:27It is during this time
07:29that Albert begins to develop his theories on relativity,
07:33a groundbreaking work
07:34that will revolutionise our understanding of the universe.
07:38But Albert's path to success
07:39is not an easy one.
07:41He faces many obstacles along the way,
07:44including poverty,
07:45rejection from the academic establishment
07:48and scepticism from his peers.
07:51Despite these challenges,
07:52Albert remains committed to his work
07:54and eventually publishes his theories
07:56to international acclaim.
07:58Albert Einstein's contributions to science
08:00are monumental
08:01and his theories have had a profound impact
08:04on our understanding of the universe.
08:06His work has led to countless technological advances
08:09and he is considered to be
08:11one of the most important scientists of all time.
08:15Yet despite his many accomplishments,
08:17Albert remains humble
08:18and continues to explore
08:20the mysteries of the cosmos
08:22with the same insatiable curiosity
08:25that first sparked his passion for science
08:28all those years ago.
08:30As we look back on Albert's incredible journey,
08:32we are reminded of the power of imagination,
08:35the importance of independent thought
08:37and the courage it takes
08:38to pursue one's passions
08:40in the face of adversity.
08:44Albert Einstein was truly
08:45a one-of-a-kind individual
08:46and his life and work
08:48continue to inspire people
08:50around the world to this day.
