00:00The Garden Rescue Team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true.
00:07Charlie Dimmock, Lee Burkill, Flo Hedlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies. Each week two of our designers will go head to head.
00:46And whichever designer loses helps the winner build the garden.
00:57Turning garden dreams... Open your eyes.
01:00I'm so overwhelmed.
01:02Into reality.
01:04That is amazing.
01:10Today the team are tackling a suburban garden in Egham where Neil and Ruman chose the perfect
01:17house for commuting.
01:20We moved in the house in 2020 just at the start of the lockdowns in the pandemic.
01:26It's a super convenient location.
01:28It's close to a train station.
01:30We can literally hear the announcements in our garden.
01:34With convenient transport links come downsides.
01:38We've got Heathrow Airport one of the busiest airports in Europe five miles down the road
01:43and it's really loud.
01:45It's difficult to sit down and relax when you have a train passing and then the plane.
01:49The traffic and transport humdrum is one thing but there's other more worrying sounds on their doorstep.
01:56So this is the deck and it's rotten and we are 99% sure there were rats living under the deck.
02:04It's just a boring new build garden.
02:10And we've done some work around the sides where we've added a bit of planting but it kind of lacks
02:16cohesion or any kind of idea throughout it.
02:20And we also put a tree because we thought why not have a cherry tree but again we just put it next to the shed.
02:28Yeah so now the shed's gone I guess it looks a bit more like a beach.
02:32Whatever Neil and Ruman try in the garden it doesn't work.
02:37So in this corner I planted my first rose but it's also where most of the sun is in the afternoon
02:43and it would be really nice to sit here but we can't because we have this big nice rose in the way.
02:50There's just nowhere to sit and enjoy it.
02:53I love my roses.
02:54It does smell very nice and they really remind us of happy times in the house.
02:58I mean obviously lockdown was challenging for lots of people but we had a new house you know
03:02we were putting things in the garden. Any garden centre that was open we were there and just
03:07buying anything they had basically. Oh these are pretty. I love the colours here.
03:13We love coming to places like this and there's so much beauty in the flowers but it's so difficult
03:20to choose on a planting scheme. I mean it's just too much choice.
03:24Yeah. So we just need someone to tell us this is your design this is how you can have your garden.
03:29Yeah. So please garden rescue come and help us and make this the garden that we've always wanted.
03:34Aspiring to achieve Neil and Ruman's dream garden today are Flo and Charlie.
03:43Okay so look smiling Neil and Ruman. Yeah and they come and their garden wow.
03:48We've seen this one before haven't we like new build, fence, lawn, deck.
03:54I have to say though the decking looks a little bit tired.
03:58Yes. But you know they are trying look they've put some plants on there and they've put some lights
04:02so they are trying. They might be into gardening. I wonder what they want.
04:08We do like to travel quite a lot and I think we've been particularly inspired by some of the gardens
04:13that we've seen in the Middle East and in the south of Spain. Those kind of Islamic gardens which you know
04:19you're in these super hot environments but they're very cooling and calming. Lots of nice geometric
04:26shapes. Yeah. And I think a big theme in them is always running water features.
04:29Yeah. Woohoo water feature right up my street. Absolutely.
04:33I guess the garden is quite low maintenance at the moment but you know we still have to mow the lawn
04:38and that's a pain. But it'll be nice to have a low maintenance garden that we actually enjoyed spending
04:43time in the weekend. Because we don't do that at the moment. It would be nice to spend time more time.
04:50We just want something tranquil where we can sit and relax and yeah be shielded from all the noise
04:56around us. But they also want to be able to sit outside. Something that utilizes that corner where
05:02the the evening sun is to kind of sit and enjoy whenever we get the sunshine. Budgets?
05:08£5,000. £5,000. Please come and help us get the garden that we've always wanted.
05:15Well I have to say we're going to have to do a lot of thinking on this one. We are creating
05:19magic but the magic is going to be in creating space in the budget as well. Good luck. You don't mean that.
05:30Charlie and Flo will create a garden to fit the £5,000 budget.
05:34Neil and Ruman must pick one and the losing designer will help build it. A trusted team of landscapers
05:42provide the labour for free. Which leaves the full budget for materials.
05:47Back in Egham, Ruman and Neil have received the final designs and pitches.
06:01OK show us what you've got. Here we go. Neil, Ruman, here's my design. I know you wanted a bit of an
06:08eastern vibe. Love that water feature. Get rid of that horrible deck and have somewhere lovely to sit
06:16in the morning but also to enjoy the evening sunshine. We've got the patio at the back. Yeah.
06:22Hi guys. Hi Neil and Ruman. Now I have designed for you a garden which I've called a relaxing garden
06:28with Islamic inspo. Very cool. Look at that. Now one of the things you said was that you want your
06:33small garden to feel bigger. And there is a trick that we designers have. And what you do is you design
06:39the garden on an angle. So I've orientated the whole garden on a 45 degree angle. So as you step out of
06:46the house you see this line here. It means that the whole view of the garden is now across the garden
06:52rather than just end to end. Amazing. Flo's design creates a long vista through clever positioning.
07:01While Charlie has been thinking about materials and planting. I've got rid of the horrible old decking
07:07and giving you a high spec porcelain patio right outside your patio doors. Oh porcelain. Surrounded by
07:16all this gorgeous planting. It's not a totally formal shape. It's more asymmetrical but it's got that
07:24formality and elegance to it. Love that. The water comes out here and drops down and then runs along
07:32and drops down again. Oh that's amazing. And it's got this bubbling foam jet in it as well which will just
07:40make the noise of the traffic just disappear and you won't even hear it. That's what we want. Exactly.
07:49Gone is the deck and the rat hotel and in its place this beautiful very contemporary clean sleek
07:55design and I've placed the water feature in the centre of the garden. So as you step down on the
08:01gravel and you walk forwards you meet two decorative arches. Oh like a gate. Walking along this path
08:09stepping stone and some gravel stepping stone and these two reels gently bubbling as we walk along.
08:15That does sound very calming. Flo and Charlie's designs both use water to offer more tranquil sounds.
08:22But have they found a way to introduce a relaxing space? Come off the patio and you walk along this
08:30plank paving through gravel and you can go one of two ways. If you go to the right you've got these
08:36stepping stones that lead up to this focal point at the end which could be a single seat somewhere to
08:45sit on your own with a book. I would love that. Before you go the other way which leads you round to
08:51this second patio that's going to get all that evening sunshine. The cocktail patio. Perfect. And I've
08:58given you a very simple pergola. That would be so cool. So imagine this pergola when the climbers have
09:05established and they're scrambling over the top giving you some coverage from the sun and releasing that
09:10gorgeous scent of maybe honeysuckle or jasmine in the evening. It's going to be a space where you guys
09:16can sit, relax, take in the whole view of the garden. Yeah covered in flowers and leaves. That's very cool.
09:24Now we've got three blocks of planting along the back wall here and on either side of the garden.
09:29On this side which is full sun. Ruben I put all your roses. Love that with the roses as well. And I
09:37book ended this border here with a tall leafy shrub again giving you some elegance and some height in
09:43the garden. And this side is shaded so we've got ferns lots of lovely deep green ferns and then again
09:51a tall flowering shrub here. Oh that's good. Yeah. This little flower bed here is a mini
10:01rose border because I know you love your roses. Oh sold. And you're sat under a small tree, nothing
10:08too big. It'll just give you that dappled light and I was thinking it could be something like a birch
10:15tree or a circus which will definitely tie in with these pencil cypress that I've got dotted around
10:24just to give you that elegant height. Love those. Neil Ruben I would love to build this garden for you.
10:30It's right up my street with the real and the water feature so please choose my design. Can you imagine
10:38that? That would be lovely. That is amazing. I really would love to build this garden so pick me,
10:43let's go on this journey together. Cheers. Wow. Oh wow. She just made it very difficult. Yeah.
10:51It's down to Neil and Ruben to decide which design is most likely to deliver their Islamic garden
10:57inspired vision. We start with Flo's design. Yeah. I think overall I love how spacious the garden
11:04looks with that diagonal design. I love the design in the middle, that kind of Islamic inspiration.
11:11It's really cool. Right, should we look at Charlie's? Charlie's. Yeah. I love how much the water feature
11:19features the design of the garden. So dramatic but also very calming. I love the asymmetry overall
11:26as well. Yeah, imagine that kind of the sound of the rill, you know, drowning out the departing train
11:31as well. Yeah. It's going to be really tough. I have no idea. I'll have to do some more thinking. Yeah.
11:44Ruben and Neil have come back to us with their decision. Oh, my stomach is tense. Off you go.
11:50Press that button. Hi Flo. Hi Charlie. Thank you so much for the amazing designs you both did for us.
11:57It's really difficult to pick one. They both take so many boxes for us. I mean,
12:03Flo, your design just made our little garden look so spacious by cleverly putting everything on the
12:08diagonal. But finally we have decided to go with... Charlie. Charlie's.
12:17We absolutely loved your design. The water feature being so central and dramatic is exactly what we
12:28wanted. Wow. Well done. Go. Well done. Flo will be helping Charlie bring her Islamic garden inspired
12:37design to life. Along with an ace team of landscapers led by project manager Ben, they have just two days
12:45to rescue Neil and Ruben's garden. Charlie has gone, replacing this deck with a brand new,
12:51beautiful porcelain patio. Now we're ripping those steps out. So for Neil and Ruben, we're going to
12:57have to build a brand new step in there. Not only have we got one patio, we have another one in the
13:03corner there just behind us. The main feature in this garden is the water rail that's going in. We've got
13:10all the plank paving to go in as well, which can be tricky. We've got the pergola, loads of planting
13:15as well. So let's get this deck up straight away. Let's go. First, Danny's on digger duties to strip out
13:2330 square metres of lawn with Susie, while the rest of the team focus on the dilapidated decking.
13:30But there's no rats under there having their breakfast. Lovely.
13:43Guys, this is the most stubborn deck I've ever seen in my life.
13:49Charlie's design has Neil and Ruben stepping from the house to a garden
13:56that'll run at the same level throughout. So two hours in, Danny's levelling the soil
14:03so it's ready to connect with a new patio, while the rest of the team focus on the gift that keeps
14:10on giving. Oh, victory. On with the next bit.
14:17So now the team has taken the deck out, it's unearthed quite a few issues for us to sort out.
14:24We have to get a new paving area in here. So not only are the levels all over the place,
14:31we've got huge voids to fill. So we're going to grade the area out, compact it with the digger.
14:39Bring in the membrane and then the MOT so we get our basin ready for that porcelain.
14:44To get the garden to one level, a 150 millimetre high step will be framed by sleepers,
15:00topped with the same porcelain paving used for the patio.
15:03Time to touch some tiles down.
15:12Susie primes each tile with a slurry to help them stick to a five centimetre deep bed of wet mortar.
15:18We have both patio areas now prepped. Susie and Dan is up there cracking on. Oh,
15:27she's going really quick. Me and Tori is going to be down here. We've just squared off this slab,
15:32straight from the line that Charlie wanted. Reservoirs going just there, but we've got to go across,
15:38get this patio done and then build a pergola. Let's go Tori, come on!
15:44Ben and Tori's patio will have a five square metre pergola running over it, perfect for Neil and
15:50Ruman to relax in. Each patio will be divided by plants, plank paving and a main water feature
16:00to divert Neil and Ruman's attention to more tranquil sounds.
16:08Susie is starting with the planks. So that's going to create the walkways between the two patios
16:15and you go down to the beautiful vista of the water feature that's going to go
16:19exactly where that digger is. We're getting somewhere now.
16:26The plank-shaped walkways are surrounded by gravel borders,
16:30a decorative nod to design principles found in Islamic-inspired gardens.
16:38And just... At the end of a busy first day, Susie's laying down the last few planks
16:46in time for Charlie and Flo's arrival in the morning.
16:49Egham! Egham! Egham's noisy! It's very noisy. Trains? Planes? Automobiles? Oh, goodness me!
16:59I tell you what, we're going to have to create an oasis here today to distract the boys from all of that
17:05noise and cacophony. I'm glad you said we. Yeah, we. It's a team, right? Yeah, because Ruman and Neil want a lovely,
17:12tranquil space to sit out and just relax and not hear all this white noise that's going on.
17:18Okay, so no pressure then. Yeah, we love pressure.
17:21Oh, wow! Look at that! Oh, what a transformation! The Rat Hotel is gone. Yes, yes. Look at that pattern.
17:33Thank goodness. But this garden, I have to say, dare I say it, is all about the water feature! Oh, really?
17:40And I'm on that! But, having said that, I know Ruman and Neil really want somewhere to sit in the
17:48evening sunshine. Absolutely. Who doesn't? Yeah, and sunshine, that's where you're going to be. Oh,
17:54oh, oh, thank you. All right, I got it. I got it. You know what you're doing. I'm going to get on
17:58that water feature to drown out the sound. Brilliant. I'll see you later.
18:12Now, what is really fantastic is Neil and Ruman have got some lovely plants in this garden.
18:19We've got gorgeous roses, lilies, peonies. We've also got honeysuckle, more scent, which is going to be
18:27ideal for the pergola, clematis. So, I'm really pleased about that. Now, originally, I was thinking
18:34of moving the roses, but they're in full bloom, and it's the wrong time of the year to do it. So,
18:41this rose bed here, I've got some gorgeous roses for Ruman and Neil. So, the scent of the roses will
18:49be picked up by the water feature. In Islamic gardens, water is often a more important feature
18:55than planting, so Charlie's designed the water feature to sit in the most prominent position.
19:08So, we've got the path coming off the patio, and as you walk along,
19:11you look straight up the rill. So, it's basically mirror image. Path, rill, reservoir, rose border.
19:22Right, I think I'm going to get the rill in. That will make a lot more sense then.
19:36Charlie's rill is a channel with flowing water running through it. They were originally used to
19:42irrigate and help diverse plants grow in Islamic gardens.
19:45So, now you can make a rill using liner and bricks or sleepers, but it's a bit of a faff and takes
19:56quite a long time, and we haven't got that long. So, I've gone with a pre-made one,
20:02which used quite a lot of the budget up. I have to say, I think the water feature is probably the
20:07most expensive thing in the garden. Isn't that so? There it is. The total cost of the water feature
20:16includes the rill, the reservoir, and the water blade that controls the water flow, totaling just
20:24under £550. So, I'm going to semi-mark that, and then the planks will hold the gravel, yeah?
20:33Beautiful. Charlie's digging a 400 millimetre deep hole for the reservoir that will be hidden by
20:39pebbles and framed by Susie's plank paving. Porcelain planks are a great addition to any garden,
20:46brilliant for framing water features, and only £15 a piece should be used sparingly,
20:52but if used correctly, can be very effective.
20:55Flo is working to help Monty and Ben, who've been creating the frame for the five square metre pergola
21:06in the corner.
21:10So, the guys have put in two posts already, and they're the two posts that are going to form part
21:16of the pergola. This whole area here is going to be a place where Ruman and Neil can sit in the evening,
21:23relax, forget about all their troubles, but the space really needs to feel like an outdoor room,
21:30a place that is comfortable, that is full of scent, a sensory space that can really just kind of like
21:37blow away all their troubles.
21:38The pergola offers a sense of height in the space, and will allow Charlie's climbing plants to thrive.
22:00What are you up to? What are you up to?
22:02Oh, the plants have arrived! Oh my days!
22:05Your back's in all the plants already, aren't you? The plants are right, beautiful. I am in love
22:09with this Philadelphia. And, I mean, a beautiful plant, and the scent is just going to set that corner
22:16alive, I think. Can I have it for my section? Well, as it's you, sunshine, and you're in the sunshine,
22:22because that sunshine will bring that scent out, won't it? Absolutely.
22:28Charlie's original design has an established tree positioned behind the water rill.
22:36Oh, hello. Hello, Circus. Yes, Circus.
22:40Aha, so this is your feature tree. Yeah. Beautiful.
22:43Originally it was here. Yes. Then I changed my mind and put it over there,
22:47but now I feel that it needs to be here. It can't, you kind of need to see it directly from the house,
22:54don't you? Yeah, and I think that'd be really nice to have a little nook here, a dingley dell,
22:59because I know everyone wants to sit in the evening sunshine, but when it's boiling hot, sat under here
23:05with a book. Under the canopy. Yeah, and I'll have my art here. I've got some art. Oh, I bet you have.
23:10And a nice little chair here. Yeah. And it's just like this lovely little space. You're surrounded
23:18by trees. By foliage. And you hear the rustle of the leaves. Yeah. The cherry is a good background
23:23for it. Now, this Circus is called Eternal Flame, and what is gorgeous about it is on the branches,
23:31you get all these different coloured leaves at the same time. So it'll look interesting all year round,
23:37and you still get the flowers as well in the spring when there's no leaves on it. Can you line,
23:44can you go on the patio? Yes. And line the trunk up with the middle of the planks? Turn it 45 degrees
23:52anti-clockwise. Clockwise. Perfect. Yes. All right. Nice. With the Circus positioned,
24:01Flo's keen to create some texture in the form of dappled light and shade
24:06at the top of the pergola. I've got a number of slats that I need to cut
24:12to create the louvre for the top of the pergola. So I'm just getting my measurement.
24:23Okay. Here we go. Flo is cutting slats 1.2 metres across.
24:30The first of many louvres to come. There we go. Right. Number one.
24:47The slats will create an elegant roof for Neil and Ruman to relax or entertain under.
24:53Well, Flo, I have to say, you've done a very good job. Why? It looks just like me design. Thank you
25:03very much. You're welcome. So now you're getting a few of those up there, you're starting to feel sort
25:09of enclosed. No, exactly. And it's almost like one of those kind of, you know, those retractable
25:16roofs that you can get, louvre roofs that go backwards and forwards. Yes. It's very nice,
25:19very, very contemporary. See, I can do vaguely modern. And what's really lovely about this space
25:25now is you've created a reason for them to come to this part of the garden, which they didn't use
25:29before. No. You know, they can come and get the end of day sun. End of sun. Yeah. Perfect.
25:35Perfect little, little hangout spot.
25:41The romance of a pergola and the serenity of the water feature is what inspired Neil and Ruman
25:47to choose Charlie's design. Yeah, I'm really interested to see how the pergola would work
25:52and what it would look like. I can't wait to see the little area at the end of the stepping stones,
25:58which would be good, like, for reading with a single chair or something. Yeah,
26:01you like that idea. The water next to it. The water feature, I just hope it's,
26:05it looks very complex and I want it to be what it looks on the, on the drawing, you know. Yeah.
26:11Is it, is it going to be kind of that, what we want? Is it going to be tranquil or is it going
26:14to be Niagara Falls? Or just kind of a, a little trickle that's like, hmm. It's like some futuristic hoover.
26:23With the hole dug and framing laid, Charlie is ready to get the reservoir and attached hose in position.
26:36Right. Next bit of the water feature. Now this water feature is a fiddle and a faff,
26:41but it is definitely worth it. So we have the reservoir. So that is our main body of water.
26:47There is a pump in there. Now I've gone for a mains pump because I'm going to be running two
26:53different things off of it. So we've got a jet there, which is going to foam and bubble. So
26:59hopefully it'll drown out all the planes and trains. Hopefully.
27:09The reservoir needs topping up before the water feature can be tested.
27:15There we go.
27:15And get the rill secured in place.
27:22Right. So find the middle. It looks pretty good from here, but it just looks like that
27:27back needs to come that way a bit. So next plan of attack. Now that we've positioned it precisely,
27:34we now need to lift it out and glue it.
27:42Using a construction adhesive will ensure there's no movement,
27:45but it also means that they need to settle this water feature in place before the glue sets.
27:51Right. The moment of truth. We're filling up the rill. We're hoping that the weirs that we've built in
28:08will hold the water. As Susie went to me a minute ago.
28:13I've got faith because I really rammed it.
28:20Right. It holds water. That's a good start. Next thing is to test the pump and try and get both bits
28:28working, foam jet and water blade. With a successful stream coming from the rill,
28:35Charlie's got everything crossed that the jet bubbles flow just as smoothly. Five, four, three, two, one.
28:47Oh. Oh, come on.
29:01By the skin of my teeth.
29:05The pergola is in place. Water feature flowing, paving down. All the big structures of this garden
29:17are ready. And it's time for Flo and Charlie to get planting. First off, the trees. Trees. Yep.
29:24Two here, one there. Then your climbers. Yep. So you've got a wusteria. You've got a clematis,
29:31lovely red clematis and you've got a jasmine. A jasmine. Yeah.
29:36Charlie plans to strategically fill the space to keep focus inside the garden.
29:49Charlie has designed three cypress trees to go into the garden. Now they are great,
29:56tying in with this theme of Mediterranean Islamic gardens because these trees are so iconic in those
30:04different spaces. And because what they do is capture the eye and take your gaze upwards. So as
30:11well as being in the garden, you're actually forced to look up in the garden and to reach the skies if you
30:16like. They're wonderful also for scent. And on a hot summer's day when you crush the leaves,
30:22it releases this beautiful aroma. Now these are really sun-loving plants and they are perfectly
30:31hardy in the UK, which is great. Low maintenance plant. Looks good in a small to medium-sized garden.
30:39And actually a much more elegant conifer if you want that look than, say, the more foggish Leylandii.
30:54Is this going to be a... No. They've got to block that. That's meant to be a little hidey hole to read.
31:01Alongside the strong Islamic garden theme, Charlie plans to add some plants that are a little closer to home.
31:09Now, although Rumyn and Neil said that they wanted a Mediterranean North African vibe,
31:16and I've given that with some of the plants like the pencil cypress and lots of scent in the garden,
31:22it's actually quite English country garden as well. You know, you've got the formality of the hedges that
31:29give you the formal feel, but then you've got lots of sort of soft, blousy plants filling it in.
31:35So we've got roses, we've got catmint and lavenders, dianthus, that all sort of soften it and flop.
31:42Now, when it comes to the colour scheme, though, I've gone for a very soft palette, sort of whites and
31:48pinks and soft blues. And of course, there's lots of yummy scent. And once a water feature's going,
31:54it will just waft around the garden.
32:01Charlie saved Rumyn's favourite flowers for the bed by the plank paving.
32:05Oh, tangled. Hello. Lovers. Lovers. Five in there.
32:14Uh-huh.
32:14So it's odd. And then I'm going to put one over the back to pull the colour through.
32:27Now, Rumyn absolutely adores roses. So I've given him a traditional rose border right in front of the patio.
32:36And roses come in all sorts of colours and forms. So the ones that I'm planting here are called
32:44floribundas. So they basically means that they've got a multi-headed flower. So you'll get lots of
32:51flowers one after another. So you normally get some flowers in end of May, June. And if you did
32:59head them, you'll then get a second flush a bit later on. Now, what I will say about roses is that
33:05you need to make sure you feed them well with rose feed and you water them. You'll find that they'll keep
33:11flowering. They'll stay healthy. Now, I've underplanted this with some perennials, hardy geraniums. And then
33:19I've got the traditional hedge going round. This one's green spire, small leaves. You can clip it, hardy.
33:27So very straightforward. But you can also use other things. So I've got a little hedge of thyme here.
33:33And Flo has planted a hedge using rosemary and thyme, which you can clip and it still looks lovely.
33:40Charlie, this garden is going to be overwhelmed with scents. It is indeed. Wow.
33:51Charlie's also thought of Neil and Rumyn's request for a tranquil spot to relax.
33:57Oh, very nice, comfy seat as well.
34:04God, imagine sitting here under the dappled shade of the cherry tree, reading a book,
34:10and you get a totally different perspective of the garden from here. And it's like a nice
34:15dingly dell with all the ferns. And you'll still get the waft of the scent from the water feature,
34:20and you can hear it. Oh, sit here all day. Well, I can't because there's quite a lot of plants to go in.
34:35Wisteria, which a lot of people seem to forget, actually is a very fragrant plant as well. I mean,
34:53we're all kind of seduced and blown away by the flowers and just the abundance of them,
34:58but actually the flower is also very scented. Charlie's chosen a white Wisteria, which is a
35:03little bit more elegant, I think, than the purple one. And it also ties in with the light-coloured
35:09porcelain and the pavers and the stones in the garden. So it's more restful as a colour and
35:16I can create some sort of sophisticated vibe in the garden. It will leaf out and create this great
35:23hovering over the top of the pergola, which adds the sense of creating shade in the garden
35:28and being comfortable to sit out here.
35:35Yeah. Great. Don't know who made that paving so muddy.
35:46Now, although Flo has got a lot of scented plants on her area, I've also got scented plants here.
35:56We've got the thymes and we've got the lavender, the ones you see all the time, but I've also got
36:01these gorgeous dianthus, tequila sunrise, perennial, so most people know this one as a carnation,
36:09because it's a bigger flower and it's got these gorgeous glaucus leaves. When they say glaucus,
36:14they mean blue-green. It's scented, so having scented plants near the moving water,
36:20it picks that scent up and it intensifies it. And the other thing about dianthus and carnations
36:26is you can eat the flowers. So you just take off the flower head, you pluck the petals off,
36:31you can put them in your fruit salad, you can put them in your cocktails,
36:36or if you're not very good at decorating cakes like me, I cheat and I use petals.
36:42With the final plants going in and patios scrubbed down, Charlie and the team have achieved
36:58so much in just two days. This is the intriguing artwork that you were talking about. Yeah. Well,
37:05it certainly is eye-catching, isn't it? Now, she wants to add a unique Islamic garden-inspired finish
37:13with a wind-spinning sculpture of a lotus flower. Well, that works, doesn't it? It sets it off.
37:19Something a bit different, because I've got a feeling room and anneal like things that are just
37:23slightly different. Yeah. But, God, you did a stellar job on the pergola. Yes. Yes, I did. But you did an
37:32even stellarer job on the water feature. Come on. Water feature, never again, never again am I doing a rill.
37:39And I'm sure Ben, landscaper, will go, no, Charlie, you're never, ever doing a rill again. But, you know,
37:48it, as you said, it was the main feature of the garden and it does create a complete vibe for the space.
37:54Right, let's go come. Let's go out.
37:56Neil and Ruman's garden once had a big broken deck that rats called home and constant noise from the
38:06local planes and trains that reverberated around the overgrown and unloved plot. But with a £5,000 budget,
38:16it's evolved into a serene, tranquil, sensory Islamic garden-inspired space.
38:28I know you're excited. Right, there's the ledge. Yeah. Step down. Yeah.
38:35Fingers crossed Neil and Ruman like it. There he is. This is crazy.
38:40So, Neil, Ruman, if you would like to open your eyes, please do.
38:50Oh, my goodness. Oh, wow.
38:54This is not a garden. This is, oh, my goodness. This is amazing.
38:57Where rotting, rat-infested decking once lay, there is now a modern porcelain patio,
39:06leading to raised beds and gravel-bordered plank paving that invites in two directions.
39:14Love it. Oh, there's, and there is the rill. Oh, that is beautiful. Thank you so much.
39:19You're very welcome. You're very welcome.
39:21Amazing. I love these little cypress, yeah.
39:25What about the rat hotel? Yeah, yeah. Oh, my goodness.
39:28It looks absolutely amazing. Strong reaction. Oh, great.
39:33Right, so, come and explore. The previously plainbacked garden
39:39is now zoned into distinct areas with the soothing water feature sat in the heart of the space.
39:45Yes. Wow. That is quite a water feature. I love it. I mean, I absolutely love it.
39:52It's absolutely amazing. I love it. It's very bespoke, I have to say. We had that made up,
39:57so nobody else has got one of those. Wow.
40:01And the great thing about the water feature, we've got these gorgeous scented roses, we've got scented
40:07dianthus, jasmine. So, the moving water picks up the scent and sort of intensifies it. Yeah.
40:14But, of course, you've got the sound. So, you sort of listen in to that sound,
40:19and it sort of blurs out the other sound. Yeah. I feel very calm already. Yeah.
40:24And there's a lot of that sound around us, so that is a welcome addition. Yeah.
40:31A bare lawn once offered little distraction or interest. Now, a bed of plants inspired by
40:38Islamic gardens and Ruman's favourite roses create sights and scents that'll drift across the water
40:45and the tranquil seating area.
40:47So, I know you're passionate, Ruman, about your roses, aren't you?
40:54I love these, yeah. Yeah. I love the colour.
40:56Yeah. Understated elegance.
40:59Exactly. That's what we were going for.
41:00I know, isn't that? That describes us anyway.
41:03Just perfect for us.
41:04We love the rose bed. That's another tick.
41:08And then we get to your evening patio. Come and have a look at this pergola.
41:15Charlie's pergola. Charlie's design, but, you know, I built it.
41:18There was nothing but grass and overgrown shrubs sat behind the space where the new pergola now sits
41:27atop the porcelain patio, perfect for relaxing or entertaining in.
41:34So, this is Flo's pergola that she built. Amazing.
41:38So, add some height to the garden and then we've got a gorgeous wisteria.
41:44I was, yeah, I spotted that. Amazing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
41:47I've always, yeah, I've always wanted a wisteria.
41:48And it's quite special because it's a white one.
41:51Ooh. Ooh.
41:52So, it's very elegant and it has much longer sort of racines of flowers.
41:58Right. Oh, that would be amazing.
42:00I can just picture it. That's a good word.
42:02I'm going to be telling everyone what the, what the flowers are called now, yeah.
42:05But yeah, sorry.
42:07Ruman has always wanted a wisteria.
42:09So, you know, we've delivered on that and it's white, it's elegant, so it's all good.
42:14In our wildest dreams, I wouldn't, yeah, thank you so much.
42:18Thank you so much, Charlie.
42:19And all the team that built this as well.
42:22Yeah, it's the team. You're very welcome.
42:23But as you said, it wasn't just me. Flo has been busy on this.
42:28Come on in, Flo. Hello.
42:30Hi. Hi, Flo. Hi.
42:32So, they're loving your pergola.
42:34We love it.
42:35What it does, it gives you a room here. It gives the height, it gives privacy.
42:40Yeah.
42:40And this cosiness.
42:41Absolutely, yeah.
42:42It's perfect, yeah.
42:43It's absolutely amazing.
42:44I mean, yeah.
42:44It was worth it, absolutely, yeah.
42:47We'll leave you with the sound of the water.
42:49How about that?
42:49To relax.
42:50I'm relaxing.
42:51We can't wait.
42:52Very soon.
42:53Yeah.
42:54Right then, Missy.
42:55Right.
42:56Enjoy.
42:56Thank you, guys.
42:58Bye.
42:58Bye.
43:00Wow.
43:01I love it.
43:02We absolutely love our garden.
43:04It's exactly what we envisaged but could never really put on in a plan.
43:09We love the water feature and it's a place where we're going to be spending a lot more time here.
43:15Yeah, I think it's just so much more than I imagined and it's just so calming and peaceful
43:19and I just can't wait to see what all these new plants do in here and thank you so much.
