00:00for nearly a decade the garden rescue team have made dreams come true for
00:08hundreds of garden owners across the UK open your eyes oh wow it's absolutely
00:23stunning thank you so much thank you very much no matter the challenge it's
00:28just coming down a little harder the rain if this weather keeps on as it is we're
00:32not going to have anything to see and no matter the garden I tell you what so it's a little bit
00:38smaller than I thought we've got the job done that's brilliant but the one question I always
00:44get asked is what happens to the gardens after we leave well now wow are we blooming it it's my
00:54turn to be amazed that's grown into a bar I'm going back been a long time to my favorite garden
01:05rescues five years including some of our very first to find out what happened we should have called it
01:19the dimm actually after we packed up our spades I'm very excited to see the garden it has gone
01:25huge look we've picked the perfect day to show you around the sun is shining the gardens looking
01:32beautiful it's fabulous this time I revisit a garden the rich brothers got to grips with in Gloucester
01:47four years ago we've managed somehow not to to kill off any of the major plants that you guys put in I
01:53think here how the wildlife is thriving in Church Crookham there's there's two frogs here once just
02:02swam away and I get my head around some new additions in Goring I don't remember that cordyline no
02:12that's Jan Jan Jan planted a tiny little cordyline and it's now a totem pole it's so big on garden
02:20rescue we brought life to many large dull spaces that's just fantastic oh look at that I'm terrible
02:40snowy talk honestly I am four years ago in Gloucester there was a very large garden where I was concerned
02:49the budget might not cover it we moved just over a year ago it's kind of a lot more country side than
02:56we had at the old house so it's quite different it's just so idyllic but novelty has worn off a
03:01little bit because the buses are run less than regular it has to be said and now stuck out here
03:06without a nice garden I'm very excited to see how the gardens looking in Gloucester I do remember the
03:14garden it was a big space amazing view and a lot to do Sam Sean and their two teenage daughters Georgina
03:25and Madeline asked me Harry and David to take on their garden oh the ideal garden is just something
03:32that is just beautiful that you step out in the morning you just think I love it I love my garden
03:38we've spent an awful lot of time clearing the garden and now we need some help putting something back in
03:43the whole road was built on old orchards and this is what we've got left one mature apple tree but by
03:48a really beautiful uh brook that sort of runs through the garden but again it's kind of disconnected
03:55from the garden it's lovely but it doesn't seem to be part of it it's almost like it's been an
04:00afterthought we've only got the one seating area at the moment and it's on slightly dodgy patio so it's
04:05a bit embarrassing to bring people back and be like this is where we're sitting there's nothing here
04:09like it's just slabs and grass that's it so it'd be nice to have something that we could like yeah
04:14well that's our garden what they're after is a very modern arty garden that's got that Chelsea vibe to
04:22it I just want to look at it and just go that's amazing so what's the budget the budget is five
04:27thousand patterns right well that's not huge when you think about creating a Chelsea garden it's a
04:33tall order that isn't it it is definitely one to really think on this one it wasn't going to be
04:40easy but Harry David and I created designs that brought a sense of Chelsea flower show to Gloucester
04:46as well as an orchard so I've gone for a very dynamic type design based on triangles now these
04:56are a mixture of paths color planting and also textures oh that is so striking we know that you
05:05wanted to have something quite striking a garden that provided you with more privacy something they
05:10gave you year-round interest and that element of sculpture and we've got a nice seating area here
05:15out in the center of the garden and then we've got the two lawn areas and these divided up by planting
05:20I really like what they've done with the patio area with both designs bringing Chelsea and perfect
05:26planting to Gloucester we haven't made things easy for the family the design that we have chosen for
05:34our garden is this one it's the rich brothers but you can't win them all well done boys very much
05:44round of applause oh yeah there we go getting straight to it can we just see if it's square
05:51the landscaping team work to clear Sam and Sean's old patio extend the patio at the entrance to the
05:59garden and create a new small central patio area framed by weathered bricks
06:09the brothers put me to work with the leftover bricks for a special project so the boys have got me
06:22making an arty bug hotel so using these old bricks bug encouraging sculptures with a theme of the day I do one
06:32two three four Harry and David were creating a rather arty B post know that Sam loved the idea of
06:40having a highly sculptural garden and what's so nice is that these three sculptures really do have a
06:47purpose in this garden they're going to create homes for solitary bees
06:50that's the budget beautiful what's happening it's the back entrance now just screw it into place
07:03oh I think they've turned out really nicely very Chelsea flower show indeed just like the plants Harry and
07:15David planned on packing the garden with lovely lovely who's getting that tree alongside fruit trees for
07:22the borders this is actually a crab apple red Sentinel and it has these amazing red fruits which are great
07:31because they actually hold well after the leaves have fallen David was bringing structure to the garden in
07:37the form of private edges it's a little bit less expensive than box or you but I think does a very similar
07:45job the idea with this is that they'll keep them clipped and they'll grow and bush out over time in a few
07:51years as they start to bulk up they can clip them with some nice undulations and the whole idea of that is
07:57they come that little bit of sculpture in the garden once the final touches were in place the modern
08:03structured but welcoming garden was ready for revealing so open your eyes oh
08:10what had been a huge expanse of lawn was now full of planting and design with a high-class inspired vibe
08:29boys that's Chelsea we've got some apple trees that can just fade into the garden
08:37hopefully it kind of gives a nice little twist that you've got them back in the garden you can
08:41that was what we really wanted we've got a repeated hedge running through there so when everything
08:45thickens up that will thicken up and it'll just create a little barrier so that you know
08:48you have to walk through to these different rooms so you've got a lot of grasses in here
08:51we're just going to kind of capture the movement so pretty in the wind we get the wind across there
08:56is this garden what you expected and what you wanted definitely it's perfect thank you
09:01it's wonderful it's it's a transformation unbelievable yeah and it's not like embarrassing
09:06the rich brothers Chelsea inspired garden made Sean and Sam go wow four years ago Georgina and
09:16Madeline have flown the nest leaving Sam and Sean to make the most of the garden space
09:21it's been a long time it has four years whoa whoa and I have to say the garden looks quite thick and lush
09:34from here it's grown really well we're really pleased with it we've managed somehow not to to kill off any
09:41of the major plants that you guys put in I think so so I'm very excited show me the garden then come
09:48on I can see this yeah follow us in just over four years Sean and Sam's garden has developed
09:55structure color and new growth the grasses shrubs and plants in the center borders are flourishing
10:04and I can spot one or two other changes hold on a second I can already see something's missing
10:14what's that then Charlie at my little bit of artwork with the bricks it's finished a bit of modern art
10:21using very simple materials a bug hotel contemporary and modern yeah sadly um Sam saw something furry running
10:32away from it one day and decided that was it if it reassures you we've repurposed your bricks that
10:38you used as the edging to the lawn certainly created wildlife just not quite the wildlife we thought what
10:45has worked is the um the bee hotels in just a few years the bee posts surrounded by wild flowers have
10:53served their purpose creating a lasting home for cavity nesting solitary bees we were told when they're
11:00filled in then the bees have gone in and laid their eggs and certainly some of several of them have
11:06this year that's fantastic so basically the masonry bees lay the eggs fill it all in that's right the
11:13grubs once they've hatched break out and off they go and start the cycle again it's little wonder the
11:21wildlife is thriving here with the orchard area flourishing once more all the trees have taken really
11:28really well in particular the centerpiece where which is green now but it starts off red and then
11:33goes green which is really bizarre but really amazing because you really wanted lots of fruit
11:38trees didn't you the small estate that we live on was built on the site of a former orchards a brief
11:44was to try and put some fruit trees back in and and again they've done really well wow fantastic so do
11:51you get lots of fruit well the squirrels get most of it yeah they take it off when it's quite little but we
11:56get loads and loads of blossom and they all blossom at the same time and the spring is really really
12:01amazing it's beautiful that's the wonderful thing about fruit trees oh look at that view oh and the
12:08hedges I forgot about the hedges hedges and grasses that the rich brothers use to bring structure closer to
12:16the house have done just that that looks gorgeous the grasses look lovely yeah the grass is absolutely
12:27stunning but and it's grown loads and it's really healthy and everything but it's kind of getting a
12:34bit closer to the edge of the path right so I want to divide it up so in the spring when you just see the
12:41first bit of growth lift the whole plant up and chop it up enhance the soil so dig in some garden
12:49compost maybe some blood fish and bone and divide it up throw away any old gnarly bits of the grass
12:57and don't and don't over divide it straight in half would probably half or into sort of four take out the
13:06old bits and then that will reinvigorate it and just keep it fresh and young brilliant so do you use the
13:13garden lots all the time oh I think it's fabulous and I'm glad you use it it's kind of it certainly
13:21was one of the best decisions we ever made to get you guys involved yeah and we're really really
13:25grateful we had fun doing it if a few arguments thanks Charlie well I can safely say I think that
13:35design definitely worked for Sean and Sam Sam is obsessed with the garden which is a fantastic thing
13:42that's one of the things with gardens it just takes over your life my next garden was about bringing a bit
13:50of the southern hemisphere to the coast of West Sussex I'm back in Goring by Sea where it's been
13:57six years since we brought an Aussie themed garden to the Sussex coast oh it's gonna be lovely to see
14:04Charlie again but at the same time I think we're a little bit apprehensive there's been a few changes
14:08I just hope that she thinks it's for the best and yes like it's improvements rather than taking it
14:15down a little peg but I'm hopeful that she'll uh she'll like what we've done to it six years ago
14:20Alison and Janice needed our help they'd recently moved to Goring to live the coastal life yeah we
14:28came down a few years ago like for a long weekend just to sort of have a bit of a break and fell in
14:33love with the place we love it down here don't we it suits us just fine very relaxing just what we need
14:38really into unfortunately their new build back garden wasn't reflective of the wider area the
14:46garden it's a bit boring we wouldn't really know where to start with it to be honest I mean it's it's
14:52like literally just a plain bit of grass at the moment and they've got a little bit of a different
14:57request they would like an Australian themed garden so turn that into looking like Australia
15:06Alison and Janice have visited down under several times in the past we love the place and just the
15:13way of life it's just so relaxing just like laid-back and we've always loved the tranquil aspect of the
15:20water we definitely like to hear the sound of water wouldn't we in the garden and yeah a palm tree
15:26somewhere yeah what's the budget 2500 oh before committing our designs to paper David Harry and I
15:35visited Goring to see just how far that budget would need to stretch this definitely a new build yeah
15:44slightly overlooked yeah both sides isn't actually but not at the back that's nice an Australian theme oh
15:51oh it's that southern hemisphere vibe isn't I think more than anything always being outside yeah even
15:56in our rainy climate yeah with no palm trees in sight would have to be creative to bring any sense of
16:06cause to Alison and Janice's backyard so a chilled relaxed garden oh yes Harry and David opted for an
16:19open modern take on an Aussie garden so this is our design but what we've done is we've introduced this
16:26cool hexagonal paving that leads you through into this informal kind of seating area you just have
16:32nice permanent benches you can have a fire pit you can have a barbecue you can have cushions it just
16:37sets it up as that almost quite outdoor lifestyle really yeah well I wanted to create a beach walk
16:43surrounded by tropical planting my main bit of the garden is basically where you're sat now raised beds
16:52planted up with lots of sort of big leafy plants now I've got seating built in natural
17:01stone on the floor but with a very fine powdery gravel running through to give that Australian feel
17:09both designs brought Australia to Alison and Janice but they could only choose one but we have made a
17:18decision and the design we've chosen really difficult honestly I love both designs really but we what was it
17:34that's swung the deal could have been this the big part feature poem yeah yeah I've had that kind of
17:41shape in mind so yeah and so the team of landscapers set to work nice and curvaceous Andy and Sam marked
17:53and cut turf to create a curvy patio and beach wall right well Lee and Steve began to build the frame for
18:08raised beds and a bench that would sit within it I gave Harry and David the task of laying the irregular
18:18shaped stones that would entice Alison and Janice on a journey around the garden this garden is all
18:25about capturing an Australian vibe and a great way of doing that it's actually by mimicking cracked dry
18:31earth through the paving and that's what Charlie's done and what I love about it is every piece is
18:36completely different so it's almost like fitting together a jigsaw I was excited about positioning
18:45an assortment of luscious plants that could replicate subtropical climes okay guys I need a few bodies to
18:53move that trachycarpus fortuna I'd like the tall one here and we need to get it in and don't be too
19:01clean to fill the soil back in because I want to put it on tilt how do you unusually to match everything
19:07else yeah and I'm thinking that it's going to go something like that I also tasked Harry and David with
19:19creating living walls as the setting of a barbecue area for Alison and Janice to get cooking outside
19:26so I am currently inside the barbecue area a key element within this garden but not necessarily
19:34something that you want to be looking at when you're elsewhere so Charlie's got this lovely idea
19:39of creating a green wall to surround it but on a budget and the key is to treat this like a hanging
19:46basket so we're slotting these in like that and then these will sit sandwiched by the bits of turf and
19:56over time you'll have the ivies the adjugas the violas and the grass all clumping together and
20:02naturalizing to create a very soft and sympathetic living wall there you go little fella grow well
20:09my plan was to surround the beach walkway and borders with easy to maintain shrubs flowers and even a
20:17little veg patch so I've just got one or two different things some herbs some onions got some chard with
20:26finishing touches including a fire bowl the formerly bland new build was looking much more Aussie after
20:32just two days water fire earth sort of mainly rock but I think it looks fab and the palms they're gonna
20:44love the palms and we could finally show the garden off to Alison and Janice yeah and step down there we go
20:56you wanted somewhere to sit in the Sun somewhere to entertain and evoke memories of all your trips
21:06do you want to open your eyes oh my god what had been a barren back garden was now reminiscent of a
21:18patch of Australia perfect for sun seeking when the weather's right an al fresco cooking area was set
21:25within a living wall and there was a beach walkway with beds and a long bench with a water rill set
21:33behind plus palm trees have you done that oh wow that's amazing that is like we said we wanted a wow
21:45factor and that is a wow factor good reaction oh smell that fire it's amazing do you know every time we see
21:52a palm tree whenever we're away we have to have a picture taken we just now we can have as many as we want
21:56that is not one though but two two amazing palm trees and a baby one on this way as they sat in
22:09their new surrounds it was clear to see just how much the new space meant to both of them
22:14that's more than money can buy it's just that it's just amazing I can't believe you've done
22:19that it's absolutely gorgeous really gorgeous I absolutely love it it's just like a bit of a
22:24tropical paradise isn't it really really is yeah it's been six years since Allison and Janice got
22:31their antipodean oasis now I'm back to see if they're still soaking up the Sun in gory I remember the
22:39budget was two thousand five hundred pounds which is a teeny amount to produce such an exotic garden
22:45the thing is is it going to be thriving or will it have gone down under
22:50good day
22:55so you got a security dog yes yeah you would think you would think you know right should we go and see
23:16the garden come on in Charlie Janice and Allison were understandably excited when they first set
23:24eyes on our garden rescue will I be feeling just as happy today
23:29that's new yeah that's the rich brothers do you remember they did the living wall there well that's
23:40grown into a bar into a bar it's clear to see Allison and Janice have been working hard since I last
23:48saw them their garden is thriving with our original plants now matured alongside some new additions
23:55looking fantastic I'm loving it the living wall the rich brothers worked so hard on to house the
24:01barbecue has extended into a garden bar and I don't recognize all the planting I don't remember that
24:13cordyline no that's Jan Jan Jan planted a tiny little cordyline and it's now a totem pole it's so big
24:20where it's flowering what you'll find it all now start branching out you'll get like a multi-headed one
24:25so it won't stay as a totem pole for much longer yeah or if you think it's got too tall you can be
24:33really brave and cut it down in the spring okay and then it will reshoot at the base but you need
24:40to top dress and feed it and then you could take cuttings of the top and just put them in the ground
24:45and hone your gardening skills there still need improving yeah so Jess the dog's coming out to
24:52explore as well oh it's her garden oh yeah she thinks it's her garden I'm loving this bit of the
24:59garden it really divides this area off it does it really does and it's all grown up so nicely
25:04the pathway that was surrounded by young plants six years ago is looking much more vibrant Allison
25:13and Janice have been maintaining the raised veg beds and the beach walk that leads to my long
25:18bench is looking lush look at those palms yeah so do you remember the baby yeah see that shows you
25:29people always say oh you know I want to put instant big plant but that now is as big as the other one
25:35it's doing so well it looks really healthy we are very pleased with it it looks lovely and of course
25:39then this pathway sort of led to this other seating area yeah where this cordyline has done really
25:46well as well did we plant that one yeah you did plant that yeah yeah I'm loving the way it's leaning
25:51my only concern is is as this head gets bigger and bigger it might tip right over so what you might
25:59need to do is just take off some of this weight so maybe take these seed heads off yeah maybe take off
26:06here which will take a lot of the weight away you can then take this as a cutting so you have
26:11another one yeah it will just mean it will be a bit more stable oh yeah we'll do that then because
26:17we don't want to lose that hold on hold on what's this sweet corn and potatoes well we've got some
26:23sweet corn over there we wasn't sure if it'd sort of do all right over in that direction but we thought
26:28we'll get a truck and try a few more and oh okay so yeah getting into the green fingers yeah I'm
26:34loving the way that this seating area is weathered down Lee spent ages on this job of it well used
26:41yes had lots of bums sitting because it's gone that gorgeous silvery color my original design for this
26:53garden was to create a place where allison and janice could unwind and socialize in separate but
26:58connected areas it's great to hear they've been doing just that what I love is the way that that
27:06cord line just breaks the line from the what cracked earth or Aussie vibe to the sunbathing and so do you
27:14still like chase the sun do you absolutely we'll always be doing there must be some chases we do enjoy
27:20yeah so you end up right up in the corner right up in the corner yeah for the last half hour sand I
27:24mean you think we've got everything here I mean look at that bar it's kitted out I know we're well
27:30set up on here aren't we we've got it good yeah really good I mean look at it it's full-on girls
27:35built on a piece of lawn just behind the rich brothers living walls there's no doubt the
27:42ticky style bar is an inviting addition oh wow we are oh I could spend hours here oh god
27:51so who actually made this our friend mark did it for a surprise for Jan's birthday so she went away
28:00for a weekend I'm so spoiled Charlie I get a bar for my birthday you can say that and what a bar it's
28:07nice to have it's it's a really nice like sort of feature of it as well do you use the garden a lot
28:12now as soon as we get a chance to be out here we are we are yeah is there a favorite part to the garden
28:19probably this island but here with the palm trees yeah yeah yeah it always be the palm trees
28:24this way we do that so well it's not a huge garden but it does feel like you've got that area
28:32this area that area yeah and of course the sunshine now I brought some of my tools with me oh yeah now
28:43I'm thinking that I might tackle the shrubs over there that have also filled out a bit and because
28:49the budget was a little bit on the tighter side those were just filler ones but I think my
28:54prune in them it will open up the banana plant to more sun so it'll get bigger as well yeah yeah
29:00so I'm gonna remove this and maybe a beer will appear after I've done my pruning
29:10Alison and Janice have done a great job bringing new life to the garden but they've been cautious
29:18about cutting back the pathway right I've got me tools pair of loppers and secateurs so while they
29:26look after Jess the dog in the sunshine I'm going gardener for hire to show them the best practice
29:32to bring shape and structure to shrubs including the fitinia I want to make it look a bit more
29:39attractive but at the same time open up this area so that the banana can get a bit more sun and so that
29:46will get bigger and what I'm going to do is prune the fitinia so that it's crown lifted to make it
29:53look more architectural and shaped rather than a blob of green now the best thing to do is rather than
30:00cut exactly where you want to cut the branch take off the weight first so I'm just pulling these branches
30:08so that I can see what I'm going to be left with once I've cut it back I'm just gonna chop off all of that
30:16a pruning saw is the best tool for clean cuts to larger branches
30:23one one several together by clearing the bottom of the fitinia it's opened up space for new plants
30:37and it's looking more attractive already so it does look better what do you think there girls oh much
30:48better yeah that looks great yeah so I'm gonna be quite brutal with this flow mess okay yeah we were
30:56wondering about that one because to us some of that looks a bit deady yeah there is some dead there so
31:02with shrubs like this what you should do is sort of do like a renewal pruning on them so every like
31:07three years take out one or two branches that are old and tired and then you'll keep it rejuvenated and
31:15you don't get the dead bits in it okay all right brilliant thank you cutting back to take the weight
31:21off and then shaping the flow miss by losing dying branches the border is really taking shape wow that
31:28looks a lot better doesn't it already so much better there we go open this border up a bit space now for
31:36a few new plants but not too many because we've got some lovely side shoots on the banana so they're
31:43going to fill that space so I don't want the banana squashed out so Janice and Alison are going to have
31:49to keep on top of the flow miss Alison's going to help me bring even more purpose to this patch in the
31:57form of some new bright planting right so we got some lovely plants here some that like the full-on
32:03shade and we'll put up with dry shade which is a really difficult place to plant yeah but then we've got
32:09some that like full-on sunshine just like you and Janice okay lovely there's lavender for the front of the
32:16border I think it should go right there the front yeah and that will smell really lovely as well won't
32:22it and attract the bees yeah it'd be great for the bees and also you know when you you're knocking against
32:27it you'll get that scent so yeah it's really gorgeous and then we've got this other lovely geranium there
32:33it's gorgeous isn't it isn't it yeah yeah and hardy geraniums will add colour even in the shade of the shrubs
32:41does it matter Charlie that the soil here is so stony no especially not for sort of sunlight there's
32:47things like Mediterranean plants if you think about the soil that they grow in it's very gravelly and
32:52stony right yeah and you know some people go around you know picking the stones out the soil but in actual
32:58fact those stones actually help plants anchor so they'll they'll root round the stones which then gives
33:05them a bit more anchorage in the ground so you don't need to dig them out I mean if it's a whole
33:10block of concrete then yes but if it's just stony ground it's fine with just one more geranium to
33:19add it's time to get Janice involved in planting too are you coming to help I will try my best there
33:26might be more of a hindrance to be fair no no no no no no so do you want to pop that one in is that
33:32that one the pink one the pink one which is the geranium oh this is the geranium geranium okay so do
33:39you avoid this normally I have planted a few things right especially that totem pole oh of
33:44course you're responsible that's my fault yeah well it's done well so that I'm expecting when I
33:51come back in six years for the whole garden to be covered with this geranium exactly yeah
33:59in just two hours we've brought new life to Alison and Janice now six-year-old Australian inspired garden
34:06now what a difference that's made already yeah that will all merge into one sort of mosaic of
34:11colour really like it good what does Jess think yeah oh yeah should you approve do you yeah tails wagging
34:18so I have to say six years on I was wondering whether the garden had sort of declined and gone
34:26down under but it's gone wow wonder I'm glad you like yeah we absolutely love it and we can't thank
34:33you enough for what you've done yeah and again today it's really lovely we've got so much more to enjoy
34:38so thank you honestly thank you Alison and Janice's garden was transformed from a bland new build space
34:46into a vibrant Aussie inspired sanctuary cutting back and refreshing the border proves you should never be
34:53afraid to introduce new shapes and styles because of garden rescue we want to be out in the garden more
35:00and you know trying to keep it looking nice really not just sunbathing in it we love the whole garden
35:05now it's just a lovely place to be yeah we've created produce growing spaces and brought wildlife to
35:13many gardens on garden rescue the greenhouse for me is where all the magic comes together
35:23and the last garden on my list wanted both
35:28three years ago father and daughter stuart and freya reached out to lee and flo
35:35so what's wrong with our garden where to start i think it's mainly that it's just very plain it's not
35:42much in here and it's a space that we can't really use so it just needs to have a bit more oomph
35:49as you can see it's a bit of a blind canvas at the moment
35:52freya and stuart were keen to include flora and fauna in their rather empty plot bug hotel
36:00so we definitely want to attract more insects and wildlife into the garden at the moment
36:06nothing much is attracting anything in the garden with a four thousand pound budget lee and flo set
36:12to work both wanted to bring new shape to stuart and freya's garden so we come into the property by
36:18the back gate along this paved area here we've taken out the old stepping stones and put in gravel
36:24which is a really nice dynamic material nice clear path all the way through there isn't it
36:29i've designed this garden at a 45 degree angle which is going to help elongate the garden and
36:35also give you more planting space fair and stuart could choose only one it's been a really difficult
36:42decision there were so many good points with both designs but we've decided to go with lee's design
36:49the landscape has got straight to work bringing lee's clever 45 degree angle garden and zigzag pathway
36:58to fruition a sheltered arbor was taking shape at the bottom of the garden like a glass as were angular
37:08raised beds for herbs veg and a water feature super look at that just looks like a real one that does
37:14have lee was keen to carve out a special space for freya i mean the whole purpose is she can sit or lie
37:22in this hammock and sort of swing amongst the plants i think we're there with that i like that
37:25well we'll get it uh concreted in then and uh i'll get some plants lovely and he wanted to encourage
37:31wildlife with a water feature hey it's nice that look at that have a little seat well flo was in charge of
37:39veg and herbs at the raised planters i'm planting this mint it's a grapefruit mint it's very productive
37:46which means that actually in an open bed it can become quite invasive so what i'm planning to do
37:51is i'm going to plant it in this pot and over time as it it bulks out stuart and freya can repot
37:58it into a larger pot lee focused on creating a living roof for the arbor just like regular turf you can
38:06cut this to size and it will come back so it's really tough and fruit trees at the center of the
38:13garden the beauty of having this in the garden is it will pollinate the other apple tree i've got which
38:19isn't self-fertile once all the finishing touches were in place good job it was time to reveal to
38:27steward and freya so when you're ready open your eyes oh my god oh my god that looks so different
38:44wow this first area is like you'll grow your own area so we've got aubergine some sage
38:49some onions and some mint nice so cool a 45 degree angle elongates the garden and the whole design's been
38:56built on that amazing do you fancy trying out your hammock for it it's really cool yeah i'm going
39:07to be using that as well yeah you can both fight over it this is your custom raised pond here it's
39:13amazing you've got this fantastic solar pump that's mounted on the wall so it just means that you get
39:18that lovely little trickling noise when you're in this section of the garden i really like it i really
39:22like the water as well so here we are at your custom green roof arbor it's gonna be so nice satire
39:29when it's raining as well yeah it's into the rain outside yeah definitely a space you want to be in
39:33now yeah isn't it definitely especially a day like this or now we've got this when it's raining we'll
39:40we'll be out here without a doubt fantastic i'm so glad you like it thank you so much you get so much
39:45enjoyment out of it thank you nice one three years on stuart and fray's garden has taken on a life of
39:56its own the garden we left behind looks even fuller and has matured into a true haven for wildlife
40:06lee most definitely created the garden of our dreams so the garden now is it really is an area
40:11there's a piece and you can hear the birds singing in the background as we come down the garden it's
40:16really nice to zigzag down the path and stop at all the main points throughout whereas before there
40:23wasn't really anything to look at back when we finished this garden went from dull and dated
40:28to a colorful sanctuary full of potential
40:35now it's matured stuart and freya are out here more than ever
40:39going from just a plain pond lovely pond but plain pond with very small plants
40:46waiting to grow to now we've added three fish and some great big plants that are great for frogs
40:54and they're nice and they flower nicely as well yeah some nice colors on them and then the frogs
40:59absolutely full of frogs yeah me and my friends spend hours out here looking at them
41:04oh there's there's two frogs here one's just swum away oh there's a third one
41:13one spot lee created with freya in mind
41:16it's really cool yeah does have to be shared with dad love the hammock this is one of definitely one
41:25of my favorite parts of the garden so nice in the summer just chilling out in this
41:31town at the arbor freshly cut and bare when we left
41:35it's now wonderfully enclosed by self-seeders and apple trees that lee planted and there's some new
41:43decor of course we love the arbor it's so nice isn't it to sit out here in the evening with the lights
41:49and the birds we can hear on top of the roof one of the things that we did make an addition to it
41:55our lights in the beds and across the arbor so we can enjoy even more in the evenings some of the
42:01lights that we have added have some really nice effects and just add to the overall atmosphere of
42:07the garden the birds love the the arbor roof so much so that they're taking it away with them so
42:15it's getting a bit patchy in places but but it's great because it's that's what we wanted the garden for
42:19the raised bed freshly planted three years ago has been updated by freya throughout the seasons
42:30are you happy where you've laid them out yeah i like that i like the dahlia being the center point
42:38all right let's go i'm most looking forward to seeing how the dahlia grows see how it spreads these
42:44tomatoes are going to be great love the smell of the tomato plants and the vines as they grow isn't it
42:49yeah there's just so many places that i can express myself throughout the garden which i didn't have
42:54before coming home from work is somewhere to to chill out somewhere to spend time with freya
43:01and can be out in all weathers and just it's just a pleasure to be in it's been great to see the
43:07gardens we built looking better than ever what's even more inspiring is that sam and sean allison and
43:14janice and freya and stewart have all grown in confidence learning to look after their gardens
43:22just as much as they love them
