00:00The garden rescue team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true Charlie
00:11Dimock Lee Burkill Flo Headlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies feels disorganized a bit chaotic it's a bit of a shocker each week two of our designers
00:34will go head-to-head pick me and let's do this the garden we're gonna go with is and whichever
00:47designer loses the race is on helps the winner build the garden good idea did you get that on
00:53camera Lee said good idea Charlie amazing turning garden dreams open your eyes well into reality
01:03today the team are tackling a suburban garden in Egham where Neil and Ruman chose the perfect
01:17house for commuting we moved in the house in 2020 just at the start of the lockdowns in the pandemic
01:25it's a super convenient location it's close to a train station we can literally hear the announcements
01:31in our garden with convenient transport links come downsides we've got Heathrow Airport one of the
01:40busiest airports in Europe five miles down the road and it's really loud it's difficult to sit down and
01:47relax when you have a train passing and then the plane the traffic and transport humdrum is one
01:53thing but there's other more worrying sounds on their doorstep so this is the deck and it's rotten and we
02:00are 99% sure we there were there are rats living under the deck it's just a boring new build garden and we've
02:11done some work around the sides where we've added a bit of planting but it kind of lacks cohesion or any
02:17kind of idea throughout it and we also put a tree because we thought why not have a cherry tree but again
02:25we just put it next to the shed yeah so now the sheds gone I guess it's a bit more like a beach
02:31whatever Neil and Roman try in the garden it doesn't work so in this corner I planted my first rose but
02:41it's also where most of the Sun is in the afternoon and it would be really nice to sit here but we can't
02:46because we have this big nice rose in the way there's just nowhere to sit and enjoy it I love my roses it
02:54does smell very nice and they really remind us of happy times in the house I mean obviously
02:59lockdown was challenging for lots of people but we had a new house you know we were putting things
03:03in the garden any garden center that was open we were there and just buying anything they had
03:08basically oh these are pretty I love the colors here they're we love coming to places like this
03:15well and there's so much beauty and in the flowers but it's so difficult to choose on a plant
03:21and ski one it's just too much choice yeah so we just need someone to tell us this is your design
03:27this is how you can have your garden yeah so please garden rescue come and help us and make
03:32this the garden that we've always wanted aspiring to achieve Neil and Roman's dream garden today are Flo
03:39and Charlie okay so look smiling Neil and Roman yeah and they come and their garden wow we see this one
03:49before haven't we like new build fence lawn deck I have to say though the decking looks a little bit
03:57tired yes but you know they are trying Lord they put some plants on there and they put some light so
04:03they are trying I might be into gardening what they want we do like to travel quite a lot and I think
04:10we've been particularly I'm inspired by some of the gardens that we've seen in in the Middle East and in
04:15the south of Spain those kind of Islamic gardens which you know you're in these super hot environments
04:21but they're very cooling and calming lots of nice geometric shapes yeah and I think a big theme in
04:27them is always running water features woohoo water feature right out my street absolutely I guess the
04:34garden is quite low maintenance at the moment but you know we still have to mow the law and that's a pain
04:39but it'll be nice to have a low maintenance garden that we actually enjoyed spending time in that we
04:44can because we don't do that at the moment we will be nice to spend time more time we just want
04:50something tranquil where we can sit and relax and yeah be shielded from all the noise around us but
04:57they also want to be able to sit outside something that utilizes that corner where the the evening
05:03Sun is to kind of sit and enjoy whenever we get the sunshine budgets five thousand five thousand
05:10hands please come and help help us get the the garden that we've always wanted well I have to say
05:16we're going to have to do a lot of thinking on this one we are creating magic but the magic is going to
05:20be in creating space in the budget as well good luck Charlie and Flo will create a garden to fit the
05:33five thousand pound budget Neil and Roman must pick one and the losing designer will help build it a
05:39trusted team of landscapers provide the labor for free which leaves the full budget for materials
05:47back in Egham Roman and Neil have received the final designs and pitches okay show us what you've got
06:02love that water feature get rid of that horrible deck and have somewhere lovely to sit in the
06:16morning but also to enjoy the evening sunshine well we've got the patio at the back yeah hi guys hi Neil
06:23and Roman now I have designed for you a garden which I've called a relaxing garden with Islamic
06:29inspo very cool now one of the things you said was that you want your small garden to feel bigger
06:35and there is a trick that we designers have and what you do is you design the garden on an angle so
06:41I've orientated the whole garden on a 45 degree angle so as you step out of the house you see this
06:47line here it means that the whole view of the garden is now across the garden rather than just end
06:54to end amazing flows design creates a long vista through clever positioning while Charlie has been
07:02thinking about materials and planting I've got rid of the horrible old decking and giving you a high
07:09spec porcelain patio right outside your patio doors all porcelain surrounded by all this gorgeous
07:18planting it's not a totally formal shape it's more asymmetrical but it's got that formality and
07:25elegance to it love that the water comes out here and drops down and then runs along and drops down
07:32again and it's got this bubbling foam jet in it as well which will just make the noise of the traffic
07:42just disappear and you won't even hear it that's what we want exactly gone is the deck and the rat
07:51hotel and in its place this beautiful very contemporary clean sleek design and I've placed the water feature
07:58in the center of the garden so as you step down on the gravel and you walk forwards you meet two
08:04decorative arches oh like a gate walking along this path stepping stone there's some gravel stepping stone
08:11and these two reels gently bubbling as we walk along that does sound very calming Flo and Charlie's designs
08:19both use water to offer more tranquil sounds but have they found a way to introduce a relaxing space
08:27come off the patio and you walk along this plank paving through gravel then go one of two ways if
08:35you go to the right you've got these stepping stones that lead up to this focal point at the end which could
08:42be a single seat somewhere to sit on your own with a book I would love that or you go the other way which
08:50leads you round to this second patio that's going to get all that evening sunshine the cocktail patio
08:56perfect and I've given you a very simple pergola that'd be so cool so imagine this pergola when the
09:04climbers have established and they're scrambling over the top giving you some coverage from the sun
09:09and releasing that gorgeous scent of maybe honeysuckle or jasmine in the evening it's going to be a
09:15space for you guys can sit relax taking the whole view of the garden yeah covered in flowers and leaves
09:22that's very cool now we've got three blocks of planting along the back wall here and on either
09:28side of the garden on this side which is full Sun Ruben I put all your roses love that with the roses as
09:36well and I book ended this border here with a tall leafy shrub again giving you some elegance of some
09:43height in the garden and this side is shaded so we've got ferns lots of lovely deep green ferns and
09:50then again a tall flowering shrub here oh that's good yeah yeah this little flower bed here is a mini
09:59rose border because I know you love your roses oh sold and you're sat under a small tree nothing too big
10:09it'll just give you that dappled light and I was thinking it could be something like a birch tree or a
10:16circus which will definitely tie in with these pencil cypress that I've got dotted around just to give you
10:24that elegant height love those Neil Roman I would love to build this garden for you it's right up my
10:32street with the rail and the water feature so please choose my design I can imagine that
10:38that is amazing I really would love to build this garden so pick me let's go on this journey together
10:44Cheers Wow she just made it very difficult yeah it's down to Neil and Roman to decide which design is
10:54most likely to deliver their Islamic garden inspired vision we start with floors design yeah I think
11:02overall I love how spacious the garden looks with that diagonal design I love the design in the middle
11:08that kind of Islamic inspiration it's really cool right should we look at Charlie Charlie's yeah I love
11:17how much the water feature features the design of the garden so dramatic but also very calming I love
11:24the um asymmetry overall as well imagine that kind of the sound of the rill you know drowning out
11:30the departing train as well yeah it's gonna be really tough I have no idea I'll have to do some more
11:35thinking yeah Roman and Neil have come back to us with their decision oh my stomach is tense off you go press
11:50that button hi Flo hi Charlie thank you so much for the amazing designs you voted for us it's really
11:58difficult to pick one they both takes so many boxes for us I mean flow your design just made our little
12:05garden look so spacious by cleverly putting everything on the diagonal but finally we have decided to go with
12:11Charlie Charlie we absolutely loved your design the water feature being so central and dramatic is
12:27exactly what we wanted Wow oh well done go well done Flo will be helping Charlie bring her Islamic garden
12:37inspired design to life along with an ace team of landscapers led by project manager Ben they have
12:44just two days to rescue Neil and Reumann's garden Charlie has gone replacing this deck with a brand new
12:51beautiful porcelain patio now we're ripping those steps out so for Neil and Reumann we're gonna have to
12:57build a brand new step in there not only have we got one patio we have another one in the corner there
13:03just behind us the main feature in this garden is the water rail that's going in we've got all the
13:10plank paving to go in as well which can be tricky we've got the pergola loads of planting as well so
13:16let's get this deck up straight away let's go first Danny's on digger duties to strip out 30 square
13:24meters of lawn with Susie while the rest of the team focus on the dilapidated decking
13:30well there's no rats under there having their breakfast lovely
13:37guys this is the most stubborn deck I've seen in my life
13:45Charlie's design has Neil and Reumann stepping from the house to a garden that'll run at the same
13:57level throughout so two hours in Danny's leveling the soil so it's ready to connect with a new patio
14:05while the rest of the team focus on the gift that keeps on giving oh victory on with the next bit
14:14so now the team has taken the deck out it's unearthed quite a few issues for us to sort out we have
14:25to get a new paving area in here so not only are the levels all over the place we've got huge voids
14:33to fill so we're going to grade the area I compact it with the digger bring in the membrane and then the
14:41mo tea so we get our basin ready for that porcelain to get the garden to one level a 150 millimeter
14:57high step will be framed by sleepers topped with the same porcelain paving used for the patio
15:03time to touch some tiles down on Susie primes each tile with a slurry to help them stick to a five
15:16centimeter deep bed of wet mortar we have both patio areas now prepped Susie and Dan is up there cracking on
15:27oh she's going really quick me and Tori is going to be down here we've just squared off this slab
15:31straight from the line that Charlie wanted reservoirs going just there but we've got to go across
15:37get this patio done and then build a pergola let's go Tori come on
15:42Ben and Tori's patio will have a five square meter pergola running over it perfect for Neil and Roman
15:51to relaxing each patio will be divided by plants plank paving and a main water feature to divert
16:01Neil and Roman's attention to more tranquil sounds
16:08Susie is starting with the planks so that's going to create the walkways between the two patios and you
16:15go down to the beautiful vista of the water feature that's going to go exactly where that digger is
16:21we're getting somewhere now the plank-shaped walkways are surrounded by gravel borders a
16:30decorative nod to design principles found in Islamic inspired gardens
16:41at the end of a busy first day Susie's laying down the last few planks in time for Charlie and Flo's
16:48arrival in the morning
16:51hey come hey come hey come it's noisy it's very noisy trains planes automobiles oh goodness me I tell you
16:59what we're gonna have to create an oasis here today to distract the boys from all of that noise and
17:05cacophony I'm glad you said we yeah because Roman and Neil want a lovely tranquil space to sit out and just
17:14relax and not hear all this white noise that's going on okay so no pressure then yeah we love
17:20that pressure oh wow a transformation the rat hotel is gone look at that pattern thank goodness but this
17:34garden I have to say dare I say it's all about the water but having said that I know Roman and Neil really
17:46want somewhere to sit in the evening sunshine absolutely who doesn't yeah and sunshine that's
17:52where you oh thank you all right I got it yeah you know what you're doing I'm gonna get on my wall
17:59feature to drown out the sound I'll see you later now what is really fantastic is Neil and Roman have
18:16got some lovely plants in this garden we've got gorgeous roses lilies peonies we've also got honeysuckle
18:26more scent which can be ideal for the pergola clematis so I'm really pleased about that now
18:33originally I was thinking of moving the roses but they're in full bloom and it's the wrong time of
18:38the year to do it so this rose bed here I've got some gorgeous roses for rooming and Neil so the scent
18:48of the roses will be picked up by the water feature in Islamic gardens water is often a more important
18:55feature than planting so Charlie's designed the water feature to sit in the most prominent position
19:01so we've got the path coming off the patio and as you walk along you look straight up the rill so it's
19:14basically mirror image path rill reservoir rose border
19:22right I think I'm going to get the rill in that will make a lot more sense then
19:31Charlie's rill is a channel with flowing water running through it
19:40they were originally used to irrigate and help diverse plants grow in Islamic gardens
19:45so now you can make a rill using liner and bricks or sleepers but it's a bit of a faff and takes quite
19:56a long time and we haven't got that long so I've gone with a pre-made one which used quite a lot of
20:03the budget up I have to say I think the water feature is probably the most expensive thing in the
20:09garden isn't that so the total cost of the water feature includes the rill the reservoir
20:18and water blade that controls the water flow totaling just under 550 pounds so I'm gonna
20:29semi mark that and then the planks will hold the gravel yeah beautiful Charlie's digging a 400
20:36millimetre deep hole for the reservoir that'll be hidden by pebbles and framed by Susie's plank paving
20:42porcelain pranks of great addition to any garden brilliant for framing water features and only 15
20:50pounds apiece should be used sparingly but if used correctly can be very effective
20:55flow is working to help Monty and Ben who've been creating the frame for the five square meter pergola
21:06in the corner so the guys have put in two posts already and they're the two posts that are going to form part of the pergola this whole area here is going to be a place where Roman and Neil can sit in the evening relax forget about all their troubles but the space really needs to feel like an outdoor room a place that is comfortable that is full of scent
21:36really just kind of like blow away all their troubles
21:43the pergola offers a sense of height in the space and will allow Charlie's climbing plants to thrive
21:48what are you up to what are you up to what are you up to oh my days your back's in all the plants already aren't you right beautiful all right I'm in love with this Philadelphia and I mean a beautiful plant and the scent is just going to set that corner alive I think
21:55can I have it for my my section well as
22:16that corner alive i think can i have it for my my section well as it's you sunshine and you're in
22:21the sunshine because that sunshine will bring that scent out won't it absolutely charlie's
22:28original design has an established tree positioned behind the water rill oh hello hello circus yes
22:38circus haha so this is your feature tree yeah beautiful originally it was here yes then i
22:45tried to remind and put it over there but now i feel that it needs to be here it can't you kind
22:52of need to see it directly from the house don't you i think that'd be really nice to have a little
22:57nook here a dingley dell because i know everyone wants to sit in the evening sunshine but when
23:02it's boiling hot sat under here with a book under the canopy yeah and i'll have my art here
23:09i've got some art oh i bet you have and a nice little chair here yeah and it's just like this
23:15lovely little space you're surrounded by trees by foliage yeah the rustle of the leaves yeah the
23:22cherry is a good background for it now this circus is called eternal flame and what is gorgeous about
23:29it is on the branches you get all these different colored leaves at the same time so it'll look
23:35interesting all year round and you still get the flowers as well in the spring when there's no leaves
23:42on it can you line can you go on the patio yes and line the trunk up with the middle of the planks turn
23:51it 45 degrees anti-clockwise clockwise perfect yes all right nice with the circes positioned
24:01flo's keen to create some texture in the form of dappled light and shade at the top of the pergola
24:09i've got a number of slats that i need to cut to create the louvre for the top of
24:15the pergola so i'm just getting my measurement okay there we go flo is cutting slats 1.2 meters across
24:30the first of many louvers to come here we go right number one
24:47the slats will create an elegant roof for neil and rumen to relax or entertain under
24:53well flo i have to say you've done a very good job it looks just like me design thank you very much
25:04you're welcome so now you're getting a few of those up there you're starting to feel sort of enclosed no
25:11exactly and it's it's almost like one of those kind of you know those retractable roofs that you can
25:16get louvre roofs that go backwards and forwards it's very nice very very contemporary see i can do
25:22vaguely modern and what's really lovely about this space now is you've created a reason for them to
25:27come to this part of the garden which they didn't use before no you know they can come and get the
25:32end of day sun yeah perfect perfect little little hangout spot
25:41the romance of a pergola and the serenity of the water feature is what inspired neil and rumen
25:47to choose charlie's design yeah i'm really interested to see how the pergola would work
25:52and what it would look like i can't wait to see the little area at the end of the stepping stones
25:58which would be good like for reading with a single chair or something yeah you like that
26:01idea next to it the water feature i just hope it's it looks very complex and i want it to be
26:08what it looks on the on the drawing you know is it is it going to be kind of that what we want
26:13is it going to be tranquil or is it going to be niagara falls or just kind of a little trickle that's like
26:18it's like some futuristic hoover with the hole dug and framing laid charlie is ready to get the
26:28reservoir and attached hose in position
26:36right next bit of the water feature now this water feature is a fiddle and a faff but it is definitely
26:42worth it so we have the reservoir so that is our main body of water there is a pump in there now i've
26:49gone for a mains pump because i'm going to be running two different things off of it so we've got a jet
26:56there which is going to foam and bubble so hopefully it'll drown out all the planes and trains hopefully
27:04the reservoir needs topping up before the water feature can be tested there we go
27:18and get the rill secured in place right so find the middle it looks pretty good from here but
27:26it just looks like that back needs to come that way a bit so next plan of attack now that we've
27:33positioned it precisely we now need to lift it out and glue it
27:42using a construction adhesive will ensure there's no movement but it also means that
27:47they need to settle this water feature in place before the glue sets
27:51right the moment of truth we're filling up the reel we're hoping that the weirs that we've built in
28:07will hold the water as susie went to me a minute ago
28:13i've got faith because i really rammed it right it holds water that's a good start next thing is to
28:25test the pump and try and get both bits working foam jet and water blade with a successful stream
28:33coming from the rill charlie's got everything crossed that the jet bubbles flow just as smoothly
28:39five four three two one oh oh come on
28:51five five three one oh
29:00by the skin of my teeth
29:09the pergola is in place water feature flowing paving down
29:14all the big structures of this garden are ready and it's time for Flo and Charlie to get planting
29:21first off the trees yeah two here one there then your climbers yeah so you've got wusteria mm-hmm
29:29you've got a clematis a lovely red committee and you've got a Jasmine yeah Charlie plans
29:36to strategically fill the space to keep focus inside the garden
29:44Charlie has designed sweet cypress trees to go into the garden now they are great tying in with
29:58this theme of Mediterranean Islamic Gardens because these trees are so iconic in those different spaces
30:04and because what they do is capture the eye and take your gaze upwards so as well as being in the
30:12garden you're actually forced to look up in the garden and reach the skies if you like the wonderful
30:18also for scent and on a hot summer's day when you crush these it releases this beautiful aroma now
30:27these are really Sun loving plants and they are perfectly hardy in the UK which is great low
30:33maintenance plant looks good in a small to medium sized garden and actually a much more elegant
30:41conifer if you want that look then say the more foggish Leylandiae
30:45is this going to be a no I've got to block that that's like that's meant to be a little hidey hole
30:59to read alongside the strong Islamic garden theme Charlie plans to add some plants that are a little closer
31:07to home now although Roman and Neil said that they wanted a Mediterranean North African vibe and I've
31:16given that with some of the plants like the pencil cypress and lots of scent in the garden it's actually
31:23quite English country garden as well you know you've got the formality of the hedges that give you the
31:30formal feel but then you've got lots of sort of soft blousey plants filling it in so we've got roses we got
31:37catmint and lavenders dianthus that all sort of soften it and flop now when it comes to the color scheme so I've
31:45gone for a very soft palette sort of whites and pinks and soft blues and of course there's lots of yummy scent and
31:52lots of water features going it will just waft around the garden
32:01Charlie saved Roman's favorite flowers for the bed by the plank paving
32:08oh tangled look hello lovers lovers five in there uh-huh so it's odd and then I'm going to put one
32:16over good idea the back to pull the color through
32:27now Ruben absolutely adores roses so I've given him a traditional rose border right in front of the patio
32:37and roses come in all sorts of colors and forms so the ones that I'm planting here
32:43are called floribundas so they basically means that they've got a multi-headed flower so you'll get
32:51lots of flowers one after another so you normally get some flowers in end of may june and if you did
32:59head them you'll then get a second flush a bit later on now what I will say about roses is that you need
33:06to make sure you feed them well with rose feed and you water them you'll find that they'll keep flowering
33:12they'll stay healthy now I've under planted this with some perennials hardy geraniums and then I've
33:19got the traditional hedge going round this one's green spire small leaves you can clip it hardy so
33:27very straightforward but you can also use other things so I've got a little hedge of thyme here
33:33and Flo has planted a hedge using rosemary and thyme which you can clip and it still looks lovely
33:39Charlie Charlie this garden is going to be overwhelmed with scents it is indeed
33:51Charlie's also thought of Neil and Roman's request for a tranquil spot to relax
33:55oh very nice comfy seat as well imagine sitting here under the dappled shade of the cherry tree
34:09reading a book and you get a totally different perspective of the garden from here and it's like
34:14a nice dingley dell with all the ferns and you'll still get the waft of the scent from the water feature
34:20and you can hear it oh sit here all day well I can't because there's quite a lot of plants to go in
34:39the wisteria which a lot of people seem to forget actually is a very fragrant plant as well I mean
34:53we're all kind of seduced and blown away by the flowers and just the abundance of them but actually
34:58the flower is also very scented Charlie's chosen a white wisteria which is a little bit more elegant I
35:05think than the purple one and it also ties in with the light colored porcelain and the pavers and the
35:11stones in the garden so it's more restful as a color and I can create some sort of sophisticated vibe
35:19in the garden it will leaf out and create this great hovering over the top of the pergola which adds
35:25the sense of creating shade in the garden and being comfortable to sit out here
35:35yeah great
35:39don't know who made that paving so muddy
35:42now although Flo has got a lot of scented plants on her area I've also got scented plants here
35:56we've got the times and we've got the lavender the ones you see all the time but I've also got these
36:01gorgeous dianthus tequila sunrise perennial so most people know this one as a carnation
36:09because it's a bigger flower and it's got these gorgeous glaucus leaves when they say glaucus they
36:14mean blue green it's scented so having scented plants near the moving water it picks that scent
36:21up and it intensifies it and the other thing about dianthus and carnations is you can eat the flowers
36:28so you just take off the flower head you pluck the petals off you can put them in your fruit salad you
36:34can put them in your cocktails or if you're not very good at decorating cakes like me
36:39i cheat and i use petals
36:52with the final plants going in and patios scrubbed down charlie and the team have achieved
36:58so much in just two days this is the intriguing artwork that you were talking about yeah well it
37:05certainly is eye-catching isn't it now she wants to add a unique islamic garden inspired finish
37:13with a wind-spinning sculpture of a lotus flower well that works doesn't it it's it sets it off
37:19something a bit different because i've got a feeling room and anneal like things are just
37:23slightly different yeah but god you did a stellar job on the pergola yes yes i did but you didn't even
37:32stellar a job on the water feature come on a feature never again never again am i doing a real
37:39and i'm sure ben landscaper will go no charlie you're never ever doing a real again but you know
37:47or it as you said it was the main feature of the garden and it does create complete life with this
37:53way right let's go gum neil and rumen's garden once had a big broken deck that rats called home
38:05and constant noise from the local planes and trains that reverberated around the overgrown and unloved
38:12plot but with a five thousand pound budget it's evolved into a serene
38:23tranquil sensory islamic garden inspired space
38:30i know you're excited right there's the ledge yeah step down yeah fingers crossed neil and rumen like it
38:38there he is this is crazy so neil rumen if you would like to open your eyes please do
38:50oh my goodness oh wow this is not a garden this is oh my goodness this is amazing
38:59where rotting rat infested decking once lay
39:02there is now a modern porcelain patio leading to raised beds and gravel bordered plank paving
39:10that invites in two directions

39:48uh quite a water feature i mean i absolutely love it it's absolutely amazing i love it it's very
39:55bespoke i have to say we had that made up so nobody else has got one of those and the great thing about
40:03the water feature we've got these gorgeous scented roses we've got scented dianthus jasmine so the
40:10moving water picks up the scent and sort of intensifies it but of course you've got the sound
40:16so you you sort of listening to that sound and it sort of blurs out the other sound feel very calm
40:23already yeah and there's a lot of that sound around us so that is a welcome addition yeah
40:31a bare lawn once offered little distraction or interest now a bed of plants inspired by islamic gardens
40:39and rumen's favorite roses create sites and scents that'll drift across the water and the tranquil
40:46seating area
40:51so i know you're passionate rumen about your roses aren't you i love these yeah i love the color
40:57understated elegance exactly that's what we were going for that describes us anyway
