00:00The Garden Rescue Team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true.
00:07Charlie Dimmock, Lee Burkill, Flo Hedlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies each week two of our designers will go head to head and whichever designer
00:47loses the race is on helps the winner fill the garden good idea did you get that on camera
00:54Lee said good idea charlie amazing turning garden dreams open your eyes that's so well into reality
01:13today the team are taking on a garden in panarth cardiff i'm hannah i'm jemma so this is our garden
01:22unloved and unused it's all a bit sad really so we've been engaged for three years now embarrassingly
01:30and we still have no wedding plans we decided to prioritize getting the house of our dreams it's
01:36quirky to say the least which suits us i think we love nothing more than trying to find the right
01:42picture and the right things our families joke that we've got a lot of stuff
01:46we love to travel one of our favorite things to do i think when we're traveling is just to be
01:54outside and enjoy kind of those those twinkly lights at night we love to collect things whenever we go
02:00out and about we always pick up you know nice bits of stone nice bits of wood whilst jemma and hannah have
02:06a strong sense of style when it comes to gardening they're not so accomplished we've got this grass area
02:13if you can call it that yeah it's mainly weeds mud yeah everything you don't want in a garden
02:20there's nice zones outside but the central bit is completely unused and that's the bit that gets
02:25the sunshine we kind of love sitting in the sun don't we unused and unloved at the moment there's
02:30a few examples of things that we've managed to kill over the years or pots that we managed to break yeah
02:36because we've had the experience of putting plants in pots and then they all die we just
02:41are worried to spend too much money on it both sides we've got walls they're very low so i just
02:47feel like we're in everyone's business all of the time especially living on a terrace street
02:51kind of you know it's a bit communal for our liking so we did make an attempt at creating something
02:57nice in the garden didn't being a bit creative we created our own little bar area we liked the idea
03:02of this gabian wall and to make use of the welsh stone that we had in the garden and i think what
03:06we created is something quite beautiful so this is where we tend to sit of an evening and have a
03:15dinner but then we look back over the garden and it's just depressing we haven't done anything about
03:21it because we just don't know how to approach it um we think we have an idea and then we change our
03:27mind yeah i would love to be able to see the bigger picture of the garden but we're just totally stuck
03:32aren't we absolutely stuck in a row lovely building isn't it that's beautiful that's a nice place to
03:42hang out isn't it charlie and chris are hoping to be in with the shot of designing hannah and jemma's
03:48dream garden hannah and jemma's garden first impressions lovely but then when you start looking
03:55uh actually no i know there's all this weird edging the piles of rocks it's sort of like
04:01things are half finished and not yeah and the lawn has had its day i know it needs a really strong
04:08design in there to make it work because at the moment you just go woof and you're all the way
04:11through it yeah now hannah and jemma come across as very stylish and well traveled i wonder what part
04:17of the world they want us to vibe in the garden let's see what jemma and hannah want yeah let's find out
04:24chris charlie what we really want is a tulum inspired jungle bar garden absolute paradise yeah
04:32it will be tulum jungle bar well i wasn't expecting that so tulum is a place in mexico it's that mixture
04:39of you have the beach and then you have the jungle right next to it so you can kind of come out of
04:43the sea and then find yourself in these luxurious bars with lots of exotic and lush planting a rustic
04:51but elegant right yeah it's a real challenge actually trying to make a space feel really lush
04:56full and jungly and i have to say jungle plants if you go with bananas and stuff like that it's quite
05:00expensive yeah it is what we've really loved is a garden that's a sensory experience so lots of
05:06textures i mean we've got lots of stuff in the garden as well so we've got some big slabs and
05:11bricks and lots of stone and we love it don't we love reusing stuff we're absolutely clueless when it
05:16comes to the garden so please garden rescue bring that tulum paradise to beautiful whales so what's
05:22the budget then well it's five grand on this one charlie it's not a huge garden no but it is you know
05:29this expensive big plants especially unusual ones they cost a lot of money and if you want it to be
05:34like a sort of tulum holiday resort it soon starts to add onto that price tag you've got to spend the
05:40money oh yes yeah i'd quite like to win this one you know i think it's right up my street it is up your
05:46street it's very designary i might be a bit too weird and quirky no never can be too weird and quirky charlie
05:55chris and charlie must create a design inspired by the beaches and bars of tulum mexico
06:01to fit jemma and hannah's five thousand pound budget the couple must pick the one they prefer
06:07and the losing designer will help the winner build it along with an expert team of landscapers who
06:14provide their labor for free which leaves the full budget for materials
06:21back in penarth here we go the videos are in the designers pitches have arrived excited yeah can't
06:29wait to see them let's do it hannah jemma this is your stepping into paradise garden
06:36let me take you on a journey through the garden so starting over here this is where you come out
06:40of the existing house onto that beautiful patio as we step off of there this is where the garden is
06:45going to radically change at the moment you've just got that lawn that sort of wiggles all the way down
06:50to the coach house and i wanted to divide it up into some more sort of inviting rooms and this little
06:56part here this is like a transitional zone into your sort of very own tulum paradise oh wow stepping
07:03into paradise looks incredible already so these are going to be plank pavers set in welsh slate
07:09chippings and as you move through there then you're going to step over this show-stopping water feature
07:15just like in your very own holiday resort so it's a stepping over water that just looks incredible
07:21hannah jemma you wanted a garden with a tulum jungle bar vibe with lots of textures well as a little bit of
07:31quirky she's got our quirky to give you that sound in the garden we've got this water feature now i say
07:39it's a water feature it's actually a fully functioning pond using your stone that you've
07:46got there so this is going to be like a dry stone wall with lots of plants in so it's going to have
07:52lots of texture to it well that's good yeah i love that she's really using that to replicate the soothing
07:58sounds of coastal tulum charlie and chris have made water features central to their design
08:03and charlie's design includes a chilled seating space to give you a bit of extra privacy i've got
08:10these bespoke sort of they're not really pergolas they're sort of a screen with a capping to them
08:18made from steel so it'll go that sort of orange rusty color rusty we love those and then on the top
08:27we've got this sort of construction that's sort of just a little bit different so it gives you a bit of
08:33coverage so that the climbers can come up and over and you'll see the plants coming through i think
08:40that'll look amazing i love the bar area that you've got down by the coach house the use of the gabions
08:46and the slate i really wanted to reflect that in this zone so to do that i've made a gabion bench for
08:52you and it's going to have stacked slate and stone that's been reclaimed from your garden oh my god wow
08:58got a gabion wall again in the center of that i wanted to give you a simple fire bowl and then
09:04two new bespoke chairs so you can just sit back there in front of fire and chill out with a glass
09:10of wine oh they're gonna look incredible another feature i've designed is this really simple screen
09:15that wraps around this social area i know it's not a permanent screen like a fence that's all fixed
09:21but it's just enough to take the edge off and sort of break up the view into the garden hopefully that'll
09:26block the view a little bit give us that privacy that we need charlie and chris have both considered
09:31privacy social spaces and water features perhaps the planting will set one of them apart we're going
09:38to put in a couple of palm trees and then also some cordial lines that look like palm trees but they're
09:45not and they get sort of multi-headed so give you a little bit of height without giving you any shade
09:50because i know you like sitting in the sunshine yeah we like the sun really feels like she's
09:56listened to the brief doesn't it i wanted to give you some really nice feature palms tracky carpus
10:02which is a great hardy uk palm and then lots of exotic under planting all around them feels like
10:08it's going to be really enclosed in the garden i really like that all around here i wanted to put in
10:12some really lush exotic style planting so things like bamboos fatsias with the big leaves stuff that is
10:18hardy in wales but it's going to give you that sort of jungle effect wow it's just completely
10:22different isn't it just doesn't look like our garden at all does it no so i've given you a garden
10:27that surrounds you with lots of jungle planting lots of textures so it's going to be a lovely space
10:33for you to sit and relax and enjoy your cocktails this is absolutely amazing i can't get over it i think
10:41this garden gives you everything you've asked for i think the show-stopping water feature is going to
10:46be a real triumph wow oh i really hope you pick this one it's going to be a tough choice they didn't
10:52make it easy did they no hannah and jemma must now decide which is their favorite design should we go
11:00this one first yes do it there we go i think charlie's really nailed this bit yeah can you imagine
11:06walking sensory experience oh yeah i mean it's an incredible just love it yeah absolutely amazing
11:11okay shall we have a look at chris's yes okay the water feature i was just going to say yeah the
11:16stepping stones as well and i love that we've got a fire pit yeah i think it's going to be impossible
11:21it's going to be tough isn't it yeah right then charlie hannah and jemma have got back to us
11:28all right so we see who's going to be building this tulum jungle yeah i know you're up for this one aren't you
11:34hi chris hi charlie hello charlie what we loved about your design was all of the color ah the big
11:43palm trees but with these pops of color throughout and of course the pond oh we've got a pond as well
11:48yeah that's nice and chris what we loved about yours when you go into the middle room as we keep
11:53calling it we've got those bespoke chairs as well i think that'll be absolutely incredible yeah i love
11:58those chairs of yours so it was a very hard choice but we have made a choice haven't we
12:02we have cool so who is it then
12:10chris
12:13i'll tell you that one charlie you would have been in tears if you hadn't won this one yeah
12:17we can't wait for you to come and build it for us yeah and see our garden come to life
12:21how are you getting all this stuff into the garden then oh we'll figure it out on the day
12:25might need a big crane or something it's gonna be fun
12:39i think it's this one project manager dan and the top team of landscapers have arrived in banarth
12:45and have the access sorted with just two days to rescue jemma and hannah's garden the quickest route
12:52for bringing materials in and out is the tight back entrance so what we've got to do here we are
12:58keeping the existing patios at the front and the rear of the garden so this section is the section where
13:04all the magic is going to happen but the main feature in this is going to be this nice water
13:09feature here and then these planks which will link both patio areas together we're also going to have
13:15a gabion seating area just along there behind coil so a nice seating area well rested after such
13:21a hard graft is everyone ready yes sir right let's go for it time to race
13:28to make way for chris's connective patio and water feature in the center of the garden
13:34the team need to clear the old tiles and brickwork
13:36we really are going to look after these stones and reuse them they are about 150 to 200 pounds a square
13:48meter really lovely stone welsh pennant they're called so yeah we're going to do everything we can
13:54to make sure we keep them and use them in the in the gabion basket and keep that whole natural feel
14:00within the garden striving to reuse and recycle as they go well that wasn't difficult
14:09susie's working hard to bring new life to overgrown trees so to your casual observer you might not
14:16realize that this is actually an olive um because normally they're quite short but this one has been
14:21left to form its own natural shape it creates a nice bit of heights within the garden so i'm just gonna
14:27take these um little bits of dead branches out and give her a little bit of a tidy up
14:33and she'll look great as they unearth old bricks and remnants dan and the team discover there's more
14:40work than they imagined in getting the central space straightened you know that patio is higher than this
14:46one so we've also got to make sure take into consideration our levels merging the one patio from that side to
14:51this side to bring the levels of the garden together danny needs to get a micro digger
14:57through the coach house
15:04well that was nay problem
15:11so we've had to dig out we've had to scrape off all the lawns gone that's what we've been putting
15:22the skip now we can start excavating for the actual pond itself which is going to be about four meters long
15:28yeah we're up against it as always
15:33chris's design calls for a pool four meters long 1.2 meters wide and 300 millimeters deep
15:40so we're just at the final stages now of doing the ground prep um mot is going in
15:53that will create a nice sub base for us we're going to get this compressed with the wacker plate
15:58and then we'll be good to start putting the blocks in
16:05once the sub base is compacted for the bottom of the water feature
16:11the team can start laying up a retaining wall to surround it
16:15yeah so the block work's going in um a little bit behind schedule middle of the afternoon
16:22um the groundwork took a lot longer than we anticipated more than 60 breeze blocks are laid
16:28to contain this pool
16:32and a layer of sand leveled over the sub base to minimize any chance of the pond's lining being damaged
16:38the unfurling of the fleece is an ancient ritual carried out by landscapers throughout centuries
16:46it's quite a spiritual moment as we hope and pray that it fits and it doesn't leak
16:53why am i missing out on something here
16:56the fleece is laid on top of the building sand before adding the waterproofing material
17:02so this liner is bespoke made to measure um it costs us about 350 quid
17:09and it's tough hard wearing and uv resistance
17:14get out of my way coil and hopefully it'll fit it does that fits like a club
17:21chris's design has sleek plank paving framing hannah and jemma's water feature
17:27and it's susie's job to make it all work i'm laying these wood effect porcelain planks which are going to
17:34go from the existing paving through the new water pool out the other side into the gravel area it's
17:41essential when laying porcelain next to a pool that you consider the slip rating of porcelain
17:47not all porcelains are created equal this is r12 so that means it's suitable for near water features
17:55so it'll help prevent people slipping on it with the garden cleared and leveled the pond dug and ready
18:01for framing that's lovely the team should be proud of their work today
18:06they're ready for chris and charlie to help make this garden rescue a reality in the morning
18:12it's lovely round there isn't it there's such an eclectic mix of architecture well there is you've
18:19got georgian on the bottom tudor on the top it's a real mix but it's a bit like my garden charlie oh
18:26okay why is that well because we've got old new and exotic oh it's a bit like us then
18:33the landscapers are already busy creating a sub base for a patio in the central social space
18:43this is fun this is nice well i'll just be here chris in the dry
18:48i'll tell you what i love this wow it's looking gorgeous already so what am i on then so today
18:56i would really like you to start embellishing this bar area because hannah and jemma they've had a go
19:02but it kind of feels a bit lost in the corner of the garden it seems like they were a bit nervous
19:06about it and i've pushed it in the corner so you want to bring it out a bit more and make it a bit more
19:10flamboyant i've got lots of bits and bobs with me because as you know i like playing with lots of bits
19:15and bobs and bobs this garden really is about making different zones so immediately as you come
19:29out of these beautiful bifold doors i wanted to make this a transitional space and luckily it's framed
19:35by these two beautiful trees we've got the birch and the olive and they're kind of making this gateway
19:39into the garden so as you start walking through here you have to walk
19:44over this very modern sleek water feature and then we get into this social zone in the middle
19:50with this space i really need to make sure that whatever i do here makes them feel cozy feel
19:55protected and makes it a space that they actually want to go and sit in their garden in chris's design
20:01the central social area has a three meter long bench with a gabion basket base yes dan the gabions are
20:08coming together yeah slowly surely mate i know i know they are really fiddly they take some patience
20:14don't they yes but they're great because you get to reuse all that stone don't yeah well we've saved
20:17all the stone from the from the garden yep so definitely be useful and it's not going to end up in
20:22the skip so we like that definitely gabions can be filled with heavy materials like slate and stone
20:28to ensure they stay in place this garden has plenty of limestone the swingers didn't have to pay
20:35for any of it no no we didn't and uh i found a fossil oh look at that let me have a look oh that's
20:42cause a little shell yeah i love that about limestone you're gonna have to show off the fossil oh yeah
20:48in the front of the gaming like both bits that may be in the same yeah that would be cool
20:52yours is looking pretty good the team needs to fill enough gabions to create a bespoke bench
20:59it's like a revolving door this everyone's coming in and having a five minute go yeah it's quite
21:04far for about five minutes charlie plans to reuse materials to create a tolum inspired bar area near
21:11the coach house jemma and hannah have got some lovely pots and some plants i mean they joke that they've
21:17killed nearly everything that they've put in the garden i think that's not quite true this host is
21:22looking good and even exotic cordyline here tri-colored cordyline and we've got an andina so
21:29there's lots of bits and bobs so treasure trove here
21:37so when you're thinking of buying pots there's certain things that you want to think of first of
21:42all you've just got to remember that you are playing host to that plant so you must water it you must feed
21:49it but what you can do if you want to use the container because it is gorgeous think about the
21:55plant that you're going to put in there so maybe put something in that's going to put up with
22:00occasionally drying out and doesn't need much so we're talking succulents so whether it's semper vivums
22:07or sedums they'll tolerate you know drying out or being in a slightly more arid condition it's the type
22:14of plants that you see growing in these gorgeous dry stone walls while charlie prepares her pots for
22:22planting that's quicker than i thought chris is building bespoke seats for the social space
22:28now i'm just working my way through my cutting list so i can cut every single bit of timber that's
22:33needed for these two chairs get them all cut and then i can just start putting it together and it really
22:38does pay to do that to sit spend the time working out exactly what sizes everything needs to be
22:43this way i know everything is going to be bang on chris builds the frame for the legs by cutting three
22:50posts to size and screwing them together so this is the first side profile of the chair coming together
22:57and then it's all going to happen quickly after this i hope
23:00chris will build two seats for the socializing space it stands up
23:09while charlie sorts through previously unloved plants to salvage any that can be revived
23:16now i have to say hannah and jemma's house plant is looking a little worse for wear you can put house
23:22plants out for the summer time but if you're going to put your house plants outside the best place to
23:27put them is in like dappled shade in a sort of protected environment so they'll be absolutely
23:33ideal on the patio just under that birch tree there
23:45now when you're potting up it is important that you make sure that you leave a big enough gap between
23:53the top of the soil and the top of the pot so that when you water it you don't wash the compost out
23:58and although this host is looking a little bit yellowy once it gets into that fresh new compost and
24:04starts feeding properly it will come right back to life it's amazing how quickly plants recover
24:11charlie will combine hannah and jemma's revived plants with new varieties chris is eager to introduce
24:18to create that tullum mexico inspired vibe oh look at this charlie fantastic instant jungle
24:24lush colorful and for me it's all about the big leaves on the fats here here not that i want this
24:31one or anything yeah i horticulturally it's really not going to survive outside no it's a bit of a tender
24:37one it's a bit of a tender one so i could have it in a container and then hannah and jen can move it
24:43inside oh yeah i think you're right there you have it for the bar it'll look really nice i'll take all
24:49the big leaves you can't have an exotic style garden without some bamboo look at that pipe to it
25:04that's what you need drama and these are going to go in two pots so they'll be even higher oh okay
25:08chris's design uses potted bamboo and posts to create privacy and distract the eye
25:15chris up right here oh yes now we're talking bringing some privacy into the garden
25:22yeah i'm super keen to get these in dan because that's going to instantly change this space and
25:26make it feel really private oh i better get cracking with it yeah get cracking and then we can put plants
25:30around them using the post hole digger suited for loose soil they've grown up the best yeah dan will
25:36plant seven tall posts across the social space if he was doing a pergola we'd go down at least 600
25:46but as they're just upright 400 is more than enough so i might be here a while charlie is collaborating
25:54with danny to craft unique woodwork for her bar area basically danny and i are using the scaffold boards to
26:02make a tower a wooden tower so we're going to go up two maybe three and then put on top a piece of
26:12slab that's left over that was in the garden already so we're recycling
26:17nice and rustic as you said what do you reckon best chair you've ever made it's going to be ace
26:33all right let's test this out then i know there's no back but this is a throne fit for a king
26:41oh look at that oh danny that's perfect absolutely amazing loving it so there's another one to go now
26:54i'm starting on it now so that works really well going to be great because if they're barbecuing
26:59they want to put something hot on it that's fine but i'm going to probably put some of my pot plants
27:04on there as a display area and then we're going to have a gabion here with a few more containers as
27:10well so it just makes a bit more of this bar space the two stacks will feature a mix of new and old
27:17plants to create a stylish backdrop so i'm going to do several different containers for hannah and jemma
27:25based on their love of cocktails and holidays everybody loves a bloody mary or even a virgin mary
27:33so we've got this tomato plant so they can use that to dress it and then you can't have cocktails
27:39without mints now i'm going to put those in separate pots because we all know that mint can be a bit of
27:45a thug and it'll just keep it under control but the scent is absolutely oh yummy yummy just like chris's
27:53seats which are actually looking a bit fancy now thank you very much charlie looking pretty comfy aren't
27:59though they do look comfy yeah we're slowly getting there you know their garden is coming along but
28:04there's still no sign of plants yet apart from yours no it's sort of still not quite looking tropical
28:10it's still looking quite penar yeah yeah yeah but not for long as soon as these chairs are underway a
28:15bit more plants in foam with just three hours until garden reveal the benches are nearly complete
28:22because we've built it we can go and have a relax in it at the end brilliant champagne yes please
28:28dreamy the bar areas beginning to color look at that lovely and the water feature which helped sell
28:36chris's idea to jemma and hannah is being filled we want to be able to sit out there and look at the
28:43reflections in that pool don't we as we sit in our bespoke chairs the jungle is coming yeah it is
28:49definitely coming look at all these parts look at that be surrounded by some of that jungle foliage we
28:56just can't wait but it is a big undertaking yes a lot to do in two days yeah with the gabion baskets
29:03for the bespoke seating bench filled kyle is ready to install some special wood for the top of it
29:10now originally in his pitch chris specked oak but this is actually a tropical hardwood called a roco
29:16this is sustainably sourced it's got similar sort of properties to oak in the sense of hardwood and
29:21it'll it'll weather it'll last for a long time i like working with hardwood it makes change
29:30susie's taking control of finishing touches for the bespoke benches the team are barrowing gravel to lay
29:36across the social space so chris and charlie the bamboo man needs to decide where to put his bamboos can
29:44focus on planting i'm just figuring out where everything is going to go because the most
29:50important thing with this scheme is to get those big palm leaves structural plants in place because
29:55these are what's going to make it feel just like a tulum jungle bar so i'm thinking maybe i could have
30:01this fatsia in this corner here so you can get reflections of these big palmate leaves in the black
30:07water so something like that these will take a bit of shade so you can imagine that spilling out
30:14over the edge of the reflective pool it's all about repeating some of these plants through the garden as
30:20well because by doing that it's going to make the whole scheme cohesive and give it a really strong
30:24identity while chris sweats the big stuff two hours to reveal everyone come on hurry up yeah i've got
30:30into second gear then charlie's focusing on finer details just spiral it round and round and round
30:37in the bar area this is just a little bit of fun just picking up the detail of the gabions that are
30:43around i've just planted this hemric al is here with the gabion over the top so it'll still get the rain
30:50it'll still get the light but the leaves will come through and a few flowers will but then hannah and
30:56jemma can use this to put a tray on if they want to if they're down here barbecuing just ups the ante of
31:03the garden a really exciting plant i'm putting in this garden is this amazing red hot poker nifofia and
31:17the great thing about nephofias is that they are really hardy but they give you that exotic look
31:24over time this clump will really fill out and you won't just have one flower spike you could have 10
31:30all coming out here so by just having a few plants along this line of posts in a couple of years hannah
31:37and jemma are going to have this huge fiery line of color through here
31:48so i've got another plant here mandevilla or it's also known as brazilian jasmine
31:55it's not hardy it makes a great conservatory plant but you can put it out for the summer
32:00and it just adds that glorious lush color it's a climber so during the summer it's going to
32:07scrabble up this apple tree and then come late september hannah and jemma all they have to do is
32:13snip it back to a framework bring it inside as a house plant and then they can put it out next summer
32:21but look at those trumpet flowers very jungly
32:30another show-stopping plant for this border is this amazing agapanthus i mean look at it covered
32:37in flower heads like little fireworks poking up around the posts now it used to be said that agapanthus
32:45thrive on being pot bound and root bound but actually it's not the case you can plonk them in the
32:51soil like this and it'll be absolutely fine and in time just like the nifo fields down there will
32:57form a really nice clump it's the sort of plant that anybody should give a go
33:05all right let's get these into position
33:07blimey o'reilly yeah you like it i like but it's all about adding drama and interest
33:14and height oh you've definitely done that there all right we're gonna walk over in this corner here
33:21yeah that's perfect and that one can go back in there and you can see now just by adding
33:27these two pots in it just frames the end of this space especially once the two big bamboo are in there
33:33the thing is with that is once that's in and you're sat down low in those chairs it just gives you that
33:39feeling of enclosure feeling of privacy in this little cozy social space which is exactly what
33:45hannah and jenna wanted
33:53now this is an evergreen average agapanthus and they need a little bit more protection they've got much
34:00thicker strappier leaves and because they don't die down in the winter it means they're more prone to
34:06frosting but having it in a container like this means that jemma and hannah can either move it
34:13into the coach house there or they can move it up close to the house and it will get the protection
34:19and the warmth from the house but this one is absolutely gorgeous and just fits in with that
34:25sort of lush glamorous planting that chris has gone for
34:38it's time for the big beasts of this garden this enormous thing here is a phylostachis bamboo and
34:45people can be quite scared of bamboo sometimes because they think it's going to take over the
34:48garden so the trick with these is to pop them in a container like this and that way they can't run
34:54away and end up in the neighbor's garden now the thing with bamboos you really don't need to do too
35:00much to look after them you just want to keep them very well watered because they love a drink
35:04and you can also give them not things like manure or some sort of feed because they just love a good
35:08burst of energy and that way in spring you'll get some really nice vigorous new shoots coming up
35:15look at that amazing with plants in place oh yeah let's get the cushions on and all the main structures
35:25too this garden was all about going big or going home did it with the water feature we've done it
35:30with the plants so i had to do with the fire pit as well there are some finishing touches to add to
35:35the water feature i'm just about to add some of this black dye to the pool and it's going to do a few
35:42things it's going to give it that dark reflective quality which is going to be really nice and
35:46modern fits with the style of the garden but also it's going to help the pond by preventing algae
35:51growth because it prevents the sunlight getting into the pond making it hot and being a perfect spot for
35:56algae to grow so you just do a little glug at a time and you move it around the pond and it will soon
36:05start to settle and all blend together time to get the pump in look at those reflections chris
36:12i know it's good isn't it solar panel right thank you now i've got to find the optimum spot for this
36:17one as well haven't i chris has chosen a rechargeable solar panel pump to get the sounds of his water
36:24feature flowing i'm going in everyone there we go that's about in the middle now we're just going
36:33to plug this in for the moment of truth there we go it gives you that nice rippling effect i never
36:40wanted this to be some big showy fountain it was all about just having a gentle ripple the tiny sound
36:46of water so when you're sat in those chairs it's really relaxing the team have worked hard to bring
36:51a tolum inspired garden to penarth in just two days all right charlie i think you've earned this am i
36:58allowed to test these out yeah take it for a spin oh very nice isn't it i can see them like curled up
37:06out here even if it's just getting cold and chilly fireball go blanket blanky hot chocolate oh you're
37:13selling it to me that sounds good doesn't it it looks amazing i mean it doesn't look like we're in penarth
37:20anymore not anymore it's just took some of these big statement plants and then all of a sudden boom
37:26you're into them you feel comfortable just that yeah yeah it's actually the clouds well we can't
37:32watch the clouds wish by all day charlie we've got to go and get hannah and jimma oh go on then as it's
37:37you all right come on hannah and jemma's garden was once a boggy uninspiring space with no privacy
37:47and abandoned pots and plants but with a 5 000 pound budget
37:55it has been transformed into a serene screened and soothing space inspired by happier times on
38:03the coast of tulum mexico okay now keep looking down or closing your eyes keep coming forward come
38:11forward come forward right now stay there no peeking will it be everything hannah and jemma were hoping
38:19for now open your eyes oh my god oh my god i've got chills this doesn't even look like our garden i
38:31can't even i said i wasn't gonna cry and now i'm like and she's kind of shaking the jungle right
38:36it's a great outfit you're very on the team this is incredible safely say shock and awe dump ended
38:43my eyes are just going everywhere it doesn't even seem like our garden this bit look at this yeah when
38:49you wanted that sort of incredible jungle villa aesthetic that's what this is all about i want to
38:54draw you into the garden yeah where a boggy patch of grass was once surrounded by long forgotten pots and
39:00plants there is now a plank paved boardwalk leading across a serene water feature surrounded by tropical
39:10planting this is all about getting that jungle feeling in the garden i've repeated some of these
39:16plants through the space so it ties it all together got this amazing fats here with the big leaves that's
39:21the sort of stuff on your jumpsuit and we do have some mediterranean plants and here we've got the
39:26oleander and beautiful colors as well i think that's the orange oh yeah the orange wow it does look
39:32amazing now this is the show stopping feature for you so go on take it for a spin just look at everything
39:40oh wow just like your very own villa so different from that old garden a lawn previously offered no
39:49potential for socializing or seclusion
39:55now a new gravel patio hosts bespoke seating and a three meter wide gabion bench surrounded by tall
40:04jungle plants and screaming why don't you take these for a spin test shall we yeah this one's going to be mine
40:12oh you've already decided between the bamboos perfectly framed the whole idea is that really low
40:18relaxed and it is very reminiscent of the tulum jungle bars that you stay in where the chairs are
40:24kind of big and sumptuous kind of rustic but then rustic but like luxurious exactly and that is what
40:29helps it tie in with like the old walls in the garden which are beautiful by the way is a backdrop
40:34for the planting and the posts you know obviously they're not blocking all the views into the garden
40:39but they're just enough to make you feel a little bit more sheltered in your own garden i love how it
40:43zones it off as well it feels like this feels separate to that part exactly continuity i think and
40:48you can still see through yeah and they've got this massive bench over here go and have a look
40:53the guys have been working really hard on that and i don't know if you recognize all the stone
40:59i can't believe that you've managed to make use of all of the stone that was just in a pile it's
41:03just honestly mind-blowing i'm questioning whether we're actually in wales right now or are we back
41:07abroad that's the aim that's what we were trying to do i can see hannah and jemma sitting there
41:13all the time why don't we go down to the the third zone of the garden now this is where charlie's
41:19been working very hard today okay hannah and jemma were unenthusiastic about the bland back end of their
41:28garden but reinvigorated pots and new plants make it the perfect area for creating and enjoying cocktails
41:38in a zone space oh look at this you're new and improved the whole idea is that you've got stuff
41:45in here that you can actually use for your cocktails as well i did see yeah i don't know if you like
41:51bloody mary's tomatoes we've got chilies there's all sorts of different things in here it's just a
41:56perfect spot cocktails all around i know where you'll be spending your time tonight
42:02chris did a fantastic job it is full-on jungle impact and wow well it wasn't all me as much as
42:11i'd like to take the credit for it all charlie has been helping me and slaving away all day so
42:16come on then charlie he made me take my boots off so i didn't so i didn't get your paving dirty
42:22don't mess up our stepping stones charlie so isn't it fantastic yeah yeah speechless and they love
42:31your cocktail bar yeah yeah i mean you know us already yeah yeah i feel like suddenly all the
42:37neighbors are going to want to be our best friends and yeah we'll have the whole neighborhood in here
42:41it's oh yeah it's fantastic we have yeah yeah we've got all the seating areas yeah i feel like i'm
42:48gonna cry i mean to me it just feels like a mexican paradise in a welsh back garden it's just
43:04absolutely mind-blowing it's just everything that we dreamed of we're not going to spend any time in
43:09the house we'll always be in the garden forevermore yeah we won't see anyone so friends family forget it
43:14now we're just going to be in this garden together yeah enjoying it we're done
