00:00The Garden Rescue Team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true.
00:08Charlie Dimmock, Lee Burkhill, Flo Hedlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:29It feels disorganised, a bit chaotic. It's a bit of a shocker.
00:32Each week, two of our designers will go head-to-head.
00:35Pick me and let's do this.
00:37The garden we're going to go with is...
00:40Drumroll!
00:42Woo! What?
00:44Lee. Oh yes!
00:46And whichever designer loses...
00:48The race is on.
00:49...helps the winner build the garden.
00:52Good idea. Did you get that on camera? Lee said good idea, Charlie.
00:56Amazing.
00:57Turning garden dreams...
00:59Open your eyes.
01:00I'm so overwhelmed.
01:02...into reality.
01:04That is amazing!
01:13Today, the team are tackling an impractical garden in Northampton.
01:18Hi, I'm Jackie.
01:20And I'm Debs.
01:21And we're from Northamptonshire.
01:23And we've been friends for...
01:25Too many years.
01:26Forever and ever and ever.
01:31The friends would like to spend more time in Jackie's garden.
01:37So, this is the garden.
01:41And that's it, Jackie.
01:44And I can't go any further.
01:47I can get out of the house and onto the patio.
01:50That's it.
01:52And then you're stuck.
01:53I'm stuck.
01:55I just sit there, actually.
01:57I don't see the rest of the garden.
01:59Not being able to get to those places,
02:02it's literally a couple of metres from me.
02:05It's so frustrating.
02:07I've done my own gardens,
02:09and I would love to be able to help Jackie with her garden,
02:12but it's too much for me now.
02:14OK, let's go garden centre shopping.
02:17Let's go garden centre shopping.
02:19Woo-hoo!
02:20Despite not being able to use her own garden,
02:24Really pretty.
02:25You could have a whole garden that was just geraniums.
02:28Yeah, you could.
02:29Really lovely.
02:30Jackie has worked as a grief counsellor
02:32since her husband, Ian, passed away.
02:35Ian did take his own life.
02:38Sorry, that's really inbound.
02:42Back in 2017.
02:45And I know what it feels like.
02:48So, she helps other people through it.
02:50That's why she's amazing.
02:53One cup of tea?
02:55Yeah.
02:56One?
02:57I'm not having one.
02:58You're not having a cup of tea?
03:00No.
03:01Sorry.
03:02Why not?
03:03Because you didn't get the cake.
03:04Oh, it's my fault.
03:06Deb was there through all of my difficulties when Ian died.
03:11Obviously, she was the first person that I called
03:14and the first person to be with me.
03:23The garden now is the next point in my life that I need to happen.
03:28So, that's really what I'm looking forward to,
03:31is to be able to go there,
03:33and it's just going to be lovely to sit with Deb.
03:36But to go out there and not be sitting looking at it and thinking,
03:39I hate my garden, which is what she does.
03:41I can't do this. I'm not going to stay at home.
03:44So, now you say we'll be able to go in a beautiful garden
03:46and have a tea and cake.
03:47That's it. I've got a nice teapot we could use.
03:49Oh, excellent.
03:50Oh, she's going to get all posh on me now.
03:53Competing for the chance to transform Jackie's inaccessible garden
03:57are Lee and Chris.
04:00Lee's always up for creative solutions,
04:03whilst Chris tries to incorporate sleek touches.
04:14Oh, so here's Jackie and Deb's,
04:16and they've been friends, Chris, for 30 years.
04:18I know, can you believe that?
04:19That is a real friendship, isn't it?
04:20True friendship.
04:21Well, I tell you what, this is their garden.
04:25Not so friendly, especially given that Jackie's got mobility issues.
04:28I know, that big lawn just leaves so much of the space
04:31completely unusable for her, doesn't it?
04:33I think that's going to be the biggest challenge for us.
04:35I mean, looking in the distance, that pergola's looking a little bit...
04:38Oh, there it is.
04:39You see that?
04:40Rickety. Look at that. Gosh.
04:42The thing is, when you've got a big structure like that,
04:44it's such an important part of the garden,
04:46that there's nowhere we can leave it like that.
04:48It's just not safe, is it?
04:49I feel like Jackie must be trapped on that patio there.
04:51How does she get to the rest of the borders?
04:53Well, I think we need to give her a garden that she can fully utilise.
04:56Yeah, get fully immersed.
04:57We'll find out what they really want, though.
04:59Come on.
05:00I want somewhere that's...
05:02Accessible.
05:03And I need somewhere that's...
05:05Flowing.
05:06Flowing.
05:07Sinuous.
05:08Oh, yeah.
05:09And what's the key word?
05:11Colour!
05:12Colour.
05:13I have colour!
05:14She wants a colour.
05:15I like to meddle with plants.
05:17Garden rescue.
05:18And at the moment, I can't do that.
05:20And I want a reason when I take her to the garden centre.
05:23She's got a reason to buy plants,
05:25because she knows she could come and put them in herself.
05:28Exactly.
05:29Aw.
05:30Don't forget the water features.
05:32That's going to be something, because it's so relaxing.
05:35Also, our pergola.
05:38Rotten.
05:39It's knackered.
05:40And don't forget, it's a best buds garden as well,
05:42so it's somewhere we can hang out.
05:44Exactly.
05:45And we can have our tea and cake.
05:46Our tea and cake will always be there.
05:47In the sunshine.
05:48Yeah, we need that.
05:49Definitely.
05:50In the sunshine.
05:51Whoa, girls!
05:52That is a huge list.
05:53That's massive, isn't it?
05:54I mean, how much do they want in one garden?
05:56Exactly.
05:57Clearly, Jackie needs to access the entire garden,
05:59because at the moment, she's kind of trapped under the pergola.
06:02Yeah, it's a real serious issue that we need to tackle for her,
06:05because that lawn is no good.
06:07But, I mean, it's going to take up a lot of the budget doing that.
06:10Yeah.
06:11We're trying to get her all the way around the garden.
06:13I'm thinking to give her a journey around the colour wheel, maybe.
06:16Ooh, I like that.
06:17Lots of bold colours.
06:18I'm kind of thinking maybe an accessible raised bed,
06:21where Jackie can really get her hands stuck in, get them dirty.
06:24And get straight under as well.
06:26Exactly.
06:27So they want a riot of colour and also a water feature.
06:30There's a lot going into this garden.
06:32There is.
06:33And it's going to eat up the budget pretty quickly.
06:35So what is the budget, Chris?
06:36It's 6K.
06:37OK, so it's healthy, but then I'll look at all that paving
06:40to be able to get Jackie around and it'll soon go.
06:42It's a real challenge,
06:43but I think my raised bed idea is really going to win this one.
06:46Yeah, whereas I think that the colour wheel
06:48might win Jackie over to my side.
06:50Well, we'll see, won't we?
06:52Lee and Chris must come up with a design to fit the £6,000 budget.
06:58Jackie will pick her favourite,
07:00which the losing designer must help to build.
07:04A trusted team of landscapers provide the labour for free,
07:08leaving the full budget for materials.
07:13Back in Northamptonshire, the designers' pitches have arrived.
07:17Right.
07:18This looks exciting.
07:20Pitches, you ready?
07:21Three, two, one.
07:22Three, two, one.
07:23Go on, then.
07:24Hi, Jackie and Debs.
07:25This is my best bud sanctuary garden just for you two.
07:29Best bud sanctuary.
07:30Aw.
07:31Now, I know at the moment you find it really difficult to get around
07:35because you've got lawn, you've got uneven surfaces
07:38and a brick path network that kind of doesn't go anywhere.
07:41So what I'm going to do, Jackie,
07:43is design you this swooping, curvaceous garden
07:46where you can pretty much get everywhere in your chair,
07:49whether it's you on your own or you and Debs.
07:52You'll notice that I've designed this big, circular paved area
07:56and I've chosen to use these grey timber effect porcelain planks.
08:01He's really got the accessibility that you need there, hasn't he?
08:04Yeah, he has, yeah.
08:06Chris has also put accessibility at the forefront of his design.
08:10As we move into this area of the garden,
08:12I wanted to give you a seamless transition between the two spaces.
08:15This is going to be a large format porcelain
08:18that will guide you into this big central zone.
08:21Right in the middle, you're going to have your very own hexagonal raised bed
08:25where you can actually get under in your chair safely
08:28and you can move around each face of that hexagon.
08:31Ah!
08:32Middling spot.
08:34Lee's design also features an accessible planter.
08:37This raised bed is full of hot pops of colour.
08:39Oh, colour! That's exactly what I wanted.
08:42But also, it's a bit of a herbal tea bar
08:45because I'm going to be planting up things like mint, artemisium,
08:49motherwort, lemon balm, all sorts of edible plants
08:52that you can pop into a cup of hot water
08:54to make yourself a nice, relaxing cup of tea.
08:57Well, we do like our tea.
09:00He's also giving her a new pergola with steel drum planters.
09:05New pergola! Woo-hoo!
09:07I'm also going to give you a little bit of shade
09:09so you don't get too hot in the middle of the day.
09:12Shade, that is what you need.
09:14I've also integrated a water feature within it.
09:17I'm loving the water feature as a focal point there.
09:20That's a bit different, that is, isn't it?
09:22It is really lovely.
09:24Chris is also offering a new pergola
09:26as well as a Romanesque water feature with seating.
09:30Put this bench in here on that little existing semicircle that you've got
09:34and revitalise the planting around it,
09:36just to give it a new lease of life.
09:38That's going to be a great spot where you can hang out with Deb,
09:41you can sit there and you can also hear the sound
09:43of that beautiful Romanesque water feature.
09:46It's going to look like a little slice of the Mediterranean
09:49in that corner of the garden.
09:51You're going to have small plants coming out around it,
09:53things like catmint and lapita.
09:55Mediterranean sound!
09:57Oh, I can't wait for some of that.
09:59The best thing about it is that you can actually
10:02finally get to all the planting beds in your garden.
10:06You can actually go up to them in your chair,
10:08interact with the plants, see the plants,
10:10whereas before I know it was a real challenge.
10:12You've delivered, Chris.
10:14And I know, Jackie, that you wanted a nook, somewhere to hide away,
10:18but I didn't just want to stick you in a corner
10:20like other designers may do.
10:22Nobody puts Jackie in the corner.
10:24I've given you this custom pergola with a green reef
10:27that's going to help bring privacy and tranquillity
10:30into this part of the garden.
10:32A great place for a bit of contemplation
10:34after a busy day at work,
10:36helping other people with their issues and problems.
10:38That's really thoughtful, isn't it?
10:40It is, yeah. It's lovely.
10:42He's given us a difficult decision.
10:47It's now up to Jackie and Debs
10:49to decide which one of the designs they like best.
10:53We'll start with these, shall we?
10:55So colourful. I like the tall trees in the corner as well.
10:58Looking at that water feature, I really do like that water feature.
11:02I like the fact that you can get round both sides
11:05of your raised garden area.
11:08I really like those oil drums.
11:10They're different, aren't they? They're kind of funky, they are.
11:13Chris's. OK.
11:15I'm liking the fact that he's kept your brick path up here.
11:18Yeah. And your pergola's in the same position
11:21because this is a good place for the pergola
11:23because you get quite a bit of sun, don't you?
11:25He's also given me a really nice bench in the middle of the...
11:28That's lovely. ..grave pathway there. Yeah, yeah.
11:31Goodness, making a decision. It's going to be really hard.
11:34I know.
11:38Right then, Lee, shall we see which one of us Jackie and Debs picked?
11:41Go on, then.
11:43Hi, Lee! Hi!
11:45Hi, Chris!
11:47Amazing designs, honestly.
11:49Absolutely superb guys, both of them. Yeah.
11:52Oh, you can tell they've really had to deliberate over this one, Chris.
11:55Chris had that formality, which I really actually...
11:59Yeah, and the space.
12:01The more I thought about that formality... Yeah.
12:04Yes, I really like it.
12:06..and Lee gave us the two different pergolas... Pergolas.
12:10..with the shade as well. Yeah.
12:12You're ticking all the boxes. I'm going for my shade, Chris.
12:15Lots of to-ing and fro-ing. Yeah.
12:17Sleepless nights, all of the above.
12:19I'm not sure which way this is going to go.
12:21Ooh, let's find out.
12:23Are we ready? Drumroll!
12:26One, two, three.
12:28Ooh!
12:30Lee! Oh, yes, congrats!
12:33You just, just, just nailed it there.
12:35Do you know what? They're such best friends
12:37and I feel like we can bring our friendship to their gardens as well.
12:40Yeah, we can. We can match their energy.
12:42Yeah, definitely. It's going to be good fun, this one.
12:44And what's brilliant is our designs were quite similar,
12:46so I'm already in sync. This is going to be a beautiful build.
12:49Exactly. I'm going to bring that colour wheel to your garden, Lee.
12:52It's going to be a riot. I can't wait.
12:57Fortunately, Lee and Chris won't be working alone.
13:00Dan and his expert team of landscapers
13:02are ready to get the build under way.
13:05Morning, all. Morning.
13:07And welcome to Northampton.
13:09Right, a lot of wood's going to come out of here today
13:12and a lot of wood's going to come back in.
13:14So we're going to get rid of this old pergola.
13:17As you can see, it's rotten.
13:19So we're going to change that for a nice new modern one.
13:22We're also going to have a pergola over there as well.
13:24That will have a nice green roof.
13:26This garden really is about mixing the old with the new.
13:29These slabs are staying,
13:31but the main feature over there is going to be
13:34a nice circular patio area, front porcelain slabs.
13:38We're going to really make this garden accessible for Jackie.
13:41The work on the roof is going.
13:43So, yeah, definitely a lot of work. Are we all up for it?
13:46We're going to be busy.
13:48We certainly are. Right, no time to waste. Let's go.
13:53The first challenge for the team
13:55is getting Danny's digger through the gap
13:57at the side of Jackie's house.
13:59I normally enjoy squeezing the machines
14:01around the side of these houses, but this one is going to be tight.
14:04It's a bit of an awkward space, especially with this lean-to,
14:07but he's more than capable of driving a digger,
14:09so it's going to be a bit of a challenge.
14:13Piece of cake.
14:15Now, the team are used to building pergolas,
14:18but today's unusual task involves demolishing one.
14:21It's been up for about 25 years.
14:23It's had a really good innings for a softwood pergola,
14:25but in Lee's plan, we're going to put up a new,
14:28a bit more contemporary pergola.
14:30It's a job to know where to start, to be honest with you.
14:32I'm not sure what's attached to what, but it's going to come down.
14:35Nails. Good. Oh, and screws.
14:38But the pergola isn't the only thing leaving the garden.
14:41Jackie's inaccessible grass has got to go too.
14:46Thankfully, it's proving much easier to remove than the pergola.
14:56This is a tough nut to crack.
15:00Looking at Lee's design,
15:02he wants a nice, clean, modern finish with this existing patio.
15:06This L-shaped wall has got to go.
15:08There's still plenty enough to do just yet.
15:13Before the wall goes, Susie wants to try and save Jackie's plants.
15:18I'm going to keep some of these lovely plants.
15:20This is stonecrop, which will have a lovely yellow flower,
15:23so that's worth keeping.
15:25It's really nice and trailing.
15:27And there's a few others. There's some albricia over on that side
15:30and a couple of allium bulbs, which we can dig down and save.
15:35All these things can go into her many pots
15:38and give her a little bit more interest in the garden.
15:51I need a bigger pot!
16:00As the patio gets marked out,
16:02it seems the team haven't put a foot wrong today.
16:05OK, team, who's stepped on my plan?
16:08Kyle?
16:09It wasn't me, mate.
16:10Let's have a look, eh?
16:12I'll prove it to you. Look, nothing like it.
16:14Eh, Dan?
16:15What?
16:16That leaves you, mate.
16:18Hang on!
16:19Look at this, eh?
16:21Yes, bang on!
16:23LAUGHTER
16:29With the wall demolition well under way,
16:32Kyle is flattening the gravel that will lay under the new patio,
16:36ready for the slabs to go in.
16:40Susie and I are laying these outdoor porcelain tiles.
16:44Porcelain's a really good product because it's very hard-wearing
16:47and these are 20mm thick, so they're made for the outdoors.
16:51With porcelain, it's very important to prime the underneath
16:54because they're not very porous.
16:56So in order for the mortar to stick and adhere well,
17:00it's important that you prime them.
17:02This wood effect on it is printed on
17:05and it's perfect for what Jackie needs.
17:09It'll be a nice seamless surface.
17:12Now, these aren't cheap, they're about £20 a tile,
17:15but I think it's probably going to be worth it.
17:17Yeah, that looks banging.
17:21As the final slab goes down,
17:23all that's needed is a pair of designers
17:26to get this garden over the line.
17:30We're in colourful Northampton.
17:32Yeah, I mean, it doesn't feel that colourful yet,
17:34but I've got a feeling it's going to be.
17:36Oh, you wait until you see this garden.
17:38Ooh, that's exciting.
17:40I told you it was colourful!
17:42That is seriously bright.
17:44That is, that's a clashy colour, that, isn't it?
17:46Well, that's exactly what this garden needed,
17:48a bit of life injected into it.
17:50It's colour and fun because, you know,
17:52Jackie, she's a grief counsellor,
17:54she's got a really stressful job,
17:56and this whole garden has to be a retreat
17:58for her and Debs to come and just switch off.
18:00Well, that sounds very exciting,
18:02but what have you got for me today, Lee?
18:04Well, you've got a massive chunk of the garden
18:06because you're standing on it.
18:08I know what's going on here, the pergola.
18:10Exactly, and the water feature, two for one.
18:12Ooh, very nice.
18:14Yeah, so I've got all this lovely concrete to get out
18:16and get started on.
18:18Oh, no, so maybe we can meet in the middle.
18:20Oh, why not?
18:22Yeah.
18:24Now, the main problem with Jackie's garden
18:26was that it was a bit hodgepodge,
18:28there wasn't really any balance,
18:30and she couldn't access it.
18:32This was all lawn.
18:34She was stuck with one or two roots around the garden
18:36that kind of ended up in these weird spaces.
18:38So my design is about bringing accessibility
18:40to the garden for Jackie and for Debs.
18:42I want to create these almost seamless paths
18:44where she can go to every corner of the garden
18:46and really get hands dirty,
18:48meddling around with the plants and pottering.
18:50A key part of Lee's design
18:52is adapting the existing
18:54and new patio and paths
18:56for Jackie's wheelchair.
18:58Oh, Dan, these bricks are going to
19:00marry up perfectly with that existing path.
19:02Yeah, well, that's the plan, Lee.
19:04The challenge that we've had is trying to match
19:06the new patio height with the existing path.
19:08Yeah.
19:10And then absolutely trying to tie it all in.
19:12I think you've done such a great job,
19:14it's like a puzzle piece that's been slotted in.
19:16As work continues on the patio,
19:18Lee's taking charge
19:20of the water feature delivery.
19:22Ah, what's going on here?
19:24That soil needs moving.
19:26Come on, Susie, hurry up with that grouting.
19:28We've not got all day, love.
19:30I don't like Captain Lee.
19:32Oh, what's that gap doing there, Chris?
19:34That needs filling.
19:36Now, this isn't actually a canoe.
19:38This is Lee's show-stopping water trough,
19:40which is going to go across this spot here.
19:42And, you know, Lee is all about proportions,
19:44so I have to get this pergola aligned
19:46just right with the size of this trough.
19:48So I'm going to get it in place
19:50and see how everything lines up.
19:54It's a lot lighter without Lee in it.
19:56Lee's first job today
19:58is relocating one of Jackie's shrubs.
20:02Now, ideally, you'd be moving your shrubs
20:04in winter when they're dormant, before spring.
20:06Sometimes you've not got that luxury.
20:08But the beauty of doing this
20:10is that we're almost editing the garden.
20:12We're taking what Jackie's already got
20:14and moving it into a better position.
20:16So we'll still be using it all
20:18and we're going to give it a bit of a re-jig.
20:20And I reckon when she comes outside,
20:22she'll look at this white jello and she'll go,
20:24wasn't that there? And I'll go,
20:26no, Jackie, it was always there.
20:28Talking of plants, the garden's new batch have arrived.
20:30Whoa!
20:32Wow, look at all these colours!
20:34This is exactly what that garden needs, isn't it?
20:36This is like a kid's sweet shop garden, isn't it?
20:38Colours, clashes, different scents and textures.
20:40I know! And look at these genisters!
20:42They're mad, aren't they?
20:44I love what you've done with the colour palettes.
20:46You've got those really strong contrasts
20:48with the yellow and the purple.
20:50That's a bit of me, that is.
20:56What are all these little bits and bobs, then?
20:58Well, I'll be making you a cup of tea later, Chris,
21:00in Leeway's bed.
21:02Oh, so it's a sensory experience.
21:04It's a space where Jackie and Debs can pick the leaves
21:06and make a brew.
21:08I love that. Brilliant idea.
21:12Offering Jackie the chance to move freely around her garden
21:14is the one element the team have to get right.
21:20For me, accessibility is just key
21:24and my garden is so inaccessible to me.
21:28It looks OK for anybody that's able to get around OK,
21:32but my needs have changed
21:34and I no longer have anybody that can help me on a daily basis.
21:38I think it's going to be life-changing
21:40to be able to be out there in a beautiful garden.
21:44The garden is for me this time.
21:46It's not for anybody else.
21:48I'm going to put myself first, so let's do it properly.
21:50Absolutely. Good.
21:52Meanwhile, Chris and Susie have some technology
21:54to help level one of the pergolas.
21:58Now, that noise you can hear is Susie's fancy laser,
22:00which is going to help us get this perfectly level
22:02with the wall plate over there.
22:04Now, I actually tend to do things the old-fashioned way
22:06and this is exactly how you would do it at home.
22:08You'd have your post in,
22:10get it in nice and tall
22:12and then you'd run your beam over from the wall plate,
22:14level it all off
22:16and then you can cut the post down.
22:18But luckily, Susie's got her fancy laser.
22:20It's got a different beep for up,
22:22a different beep for down
22:24and then a dead straight beep for when it's level.
22:26When you're on the money.
22:28Yep.
22:30Right, let's hope for a good beep then.
22:32So, down.
22:34There we go.
22:36Level.
22:38Yeah?
22:40Yep.
22:42Are we good?
22:44Good.
22:48Lee's design includes
22:50a second plant-roofed pergola
22:52to offer Jackie some shade.
22:54It's time to get the upright post in.
22:56My green-roof pergola.
22:58Right, Dan.
23:00I'm just stringing,
23:02make sure that we're square.
23:04Yep.
23:06Let me know where you want it.
23:08Have post, will travel.
23:10Hey, Chris.
23:12Yeah?
23:14Do you fancy a race to put your pergola up?
23:16Look at us, we're winning, mate.
23:18Oh, it's too old, too old.
23:20No, just you wait. You've got a whole green-roof to go on top of yours.
23:22Look at that.
23:26It's going to be stood here all day
23:28whilst Dan uses Pythagoras' theorem
23:30to get these perfect.
23:32Right, come on, Susie.
23:34We can't let Lee win this.
23:36We've got this.
23:38We need energy.
23:42Now, I know you love your pergolas,
23:44but do you love a bit of height in a garden?
23:46Yeah, I think this is really a clever idea.
23:48Especially with this circle there.
23:50It's like such a good outlook
23:52when you're sat in here looking across the garden.
23:54Yeah, because when we're stood here,
23:56all I can see is all these windows.
23:58It's just nice sometimes to find
24:00that little bit of nesting in a garden.
24:02Yeah, especially when the whole roof is on it.
24:04You're going to feel so cosy in there.
24:06And you've got that whole curved planter
24:08to make as well, haven't you?
24:10Pish-pash. We'll come on to that when we come on to it.
24:12The race is on.
24:14The garden also includes
24:16some intricate curved paving
24:18that links the original and new patios.
24:20I tell you what, Carl,
24:22that is a piece of artwork.
24:24It's beautiful.
24:26Best part of the garden, isn't it, really?
24:28I think so.
24:30I mean, I'm not going to say that to Lee.
24:32He might get a bit upset,
24:34but I think this is the best bit.
24:36Thank you, mate.
24:38It's all the little details.
24:40Look at that little nugget there.
24:42Three hours to do that.
24:44Is that all?
24:54With work carrying on apace,
24:56Lee has turned his attention to the wheelchair-friendly
24:58circular raised planter.
25:00I assume we haven't got any round
25:02pieces of wood ready to go.
25:04No, we never do, do we?
25:06Right, so what we need to do, I think,
25:08is kind of make a form
25:10of our curved sheet material
25:12and then
25:14bend our composite
25:16around this curve.
25:22With work underway on the raised bed,
25:24Chris is adding the top slats to his pergola.
25:28Now, we're employing a special trick with this pergola
25:30because it was really important for Jackie
25:32to have some shade in the garden.
25:34And normally on a pergola,
25:36you would run these slats vertically
25:38because you get strength in the timber
25:40when you run them vertically.
25:42However, it's not a very big span across here
25:44so we've got the opportunity to run them flat
25:46and by doing that, it means that
25:48when the sun comes over, it's going to create
25:50more shadows and give Jackie
25:52a bit more shade and respite
25:54in this cosy bit of the garden.
25:56With both pergolas
25:58almost finished...
26:00Time to roll out the old
26:02oil barrels.
26:04These are pretty snazzy.
26:06What are they from?
26:08These are second hand oil drums
26:10but we're going to use them as really vibrant planters
26:12that are going to lift the planting up right to Jackie's eye level.
26:14Now, I do love that
26:16but I don't like having to fill them up.
26:18So we're going to cheat it.
26:20Because we don't want to fill these just full of heavy soil
26:22which is a waste of soil
26:24and it means that Jackie can't move them,
26:26we're going to fill them with these empty plant pots
26:28to take up the void.
26:30And you're reusing all these plastics that otherwise
26:32you wouldn't want to do.
26:34This means that we can just top this up
26:36with a third of nice compost lined
26:38and these will take the rest of the space.
26:40Easy peasy.
26:46And Lee's got another tip.
26:48Repurposing some lining
26:50from his green roofed pergola.
26:52What I'm doing is using some of this
26:54pond liner to line the space
26:56so at the bottom we've got the plant pots
26:58and some old tun bags to reuse them
27:00so that we're not filling it full of soil
27:02because if we just pour soil in
27:04it's going to disappear amongst all the cracks
27:06and start to look really messy.
27:08So we're treating this a bit like a pond.
27:10So we've already got holes at the bottom of the oil barrel
27:12but we need them in this line
27:14so that the water can drain through
27:16when it's either being watered or it rains
27:18and it doesn't get totally soggy and turn into a bog garden.
27:20And the finishing touch is just to snip this
27:22just below the level of the top
27:24of the drum
27:26so it's not visible
27:28and once it's packed full of plants
27:30it'll save soil, save backache
27:32and create amazing planters.
27:34Hopefully.
27:36Where do you want to put your nesters?
27:40They're nice, aren't they?
27:42They are beautiful. I would love them
27:44to be like a pop of colour near the edge
27:46which I know is unusual for a shrub
27:48but they don't get massive so somewhere near the edge.
27:50I like putting shrubs near the edge
27:52I think people don't do it and it's a mistake.
27:54We always live at the edge, me and you, don't we?
27:57As work continues
27:59on the hard landscaping
28:01Lee and Chris turn their attention
28:03to the plants.
28:05Now the colour and planting palette for this garden
28:07is kind of in two halves.
28:09The first is this riot of colour
28:11clashes, loads of vibrancy
28:13and the second is over near the back
28:15where we've got things like the forest grasses
28:17everything gets a bit dark and shady
28:19we've got some shade queens over there
28:21some beautiful dark mohs
28:23but over here it starts to liven up again.
28:25Chris, this is a bit of a Marmite
28:27approach to planting, isn't it?
28:29Well, I think it is. It depends on what you're doing.
28:31By the end of the day, we're making
28:33a garden for Jackie. It's her garden
28:35and it's her thing. She wanted colour
28:37and that's what you're delivering. She's going to be over the moon
28:39with it and I think it's fun and
28:41gardening doesn't need to be all stuffy
28:43and pretentious. You can have fun with it
28:45and be bold. You're demystifying it, Chris.
28:47Oh, yeah.
28:49Right.
28:51Like pieces of a puzzle.
28:53Lee is starting his planting plan
28:55off in the oil drums.
28:57I've chosen
28:59some really wild plant
29:01specimens for these oil barrels.
29:03Now, I'm going to be honest. This is not my usual style.
29:05There is no plant association
29:07between the different plant groups
29:09the colours clash and this is just
29:11really a riot of colour that kind of makes no sense.
29:13However, I think Jackie's going to
29:15love it because there's so much contrast.
29:17So, yes, the dwarf sunflower
29:19would never usually live next to the Achillea
29:21but because they've got them in this oil barrel
29:23and they're out in full sun, Jackie can
29:25potter around, move them at her own will
29:27and change this up every couple of years
29:29and I just think it's going to bring
29:31a bit of sunshine to the patio.
29:33I absolutely love
29:35what Lee has done with the planting
29:37here because it's all about bringing
29:39joy, fun and most
29:41importantly colour into this garden for
29:43Jackie. One of my favourite plants
29:45in this border is this
29:47beautiful iris
29:49and they're great because not only
29:51do you get the amazing flower but you also
29:53get the beautiful foliage as well and I think
29:55that's often quite underrated with iris
29:57because people say, oh no, the flowers
29:59don't last too long
30:01but actually the foliage is great
30:03as well, especially when it's surrounded
30:05by other beautiful perennials.
30:07Music
30:15Meanwhile
30:17Lee has a few special plants
30:19for the water trough.
30:21Now by using this trough we introduce a few
30:23new elements to the garden. The first is obviously
30:25the sound of water but the second
30:27are aquatic plants which are going to
30:29introduce and encourage all sorts
30:31of weird and wonderful insects to the garden.
30:33We've got some wonderful marginal
30:35pond plants that are just going to sit
30:37along the edge and one
30:39in particular is a real beauty and it's this
30:41the good old fashioned
30:43pond lily and what I love
30:45about lilies is they've got loads of symbolism
30:47but one of the things that pond lilies
30:49represent is rebirth
30:51and emergence and this
30:53theory of emergence and rebirth I think is
30:55really fitting for Jackie because this garden
30:57is all about sanctuary and giving
30:59back to her a bit of that energy that she gives out
31:01to so many other people. So we've got
31:03the lily, the marginals, but we
31:05need one more type of pond plant
31:07that's going to really bring this to life
31:09and that's the floating
31:11aquatics. Now I've picked some
31:13floating water lettuce
31:15that look just like
31:17lettuce and they've got this sort of
31:19furry leaf that's beautiful to the touch
31:21and the roots dangle just below
31:23the surface and when you pop them on
31:25they will naturally find their
31:27way as they drift through parts of the pond.
31:29This in its own right is going to be a
31:31beautiful mini garden for Jackie
31:33that will encourage birds, insects, wildlife
31:35and recharge for
31:37Jackie when she comes in from work
31:39she can switch off and just be
31:41somewhere absolutely beautiful.
31:49Another special feature for this
31:51garden is the green cedum roof
31:53on the pergola.
31:55Now when you're doing a green roof
31:57it's all about getting the build up of the roof right
31:59I mean first of all you need to make sure
32:01that the roof is strong enough to take the weight
32:03of the saturated cedum when they're wet
32:05but also you need to
32:07protect the roof because
32:09you don't want that membrane leaking
32:11and water getting down through. So first
32:13we have a waterproof layer that can be
32:15a rubber pond liner for example
32:17or very thick gauge DPM
32:19that we have and then you protect
32:21that with a fleece because you
32:23don't want any of the soil and stones
32:25from these trays getting down
32:27and perforating the membrane.
32:29And then the best thing about these cedum
32:31because they're in the trays you just
32:33slot them together and then they're ready
32:35to go but you can in
32:37some places buy cedum in a roll
32:39and to do that you'd do the same thing
32:41you'd have your waterproofing, the fleece
32:43and then you might even have a bit of a drainage
32:45board and then you put your soil
32:47and your rolls on top. So
32:49all in all it's quite straightforward
32:51and actually this garden is going
32:53to benefit so much from this because you're getting
32:55so many more square meterage
32:57of planting and beneficial
32:59plants for wildlife in this garden.
33:03Now you might be wondering why bother
33:05with a green roof on a pergola or a shed
33:07and there's a good reason why we
33:09use this in garden design.
33:11The first is that it acts as a wildlife
33:13habitat for literally thousands of
33:15insects. Without this they wouldn't
33:17have access to pollen, nectar
33:19or any kind of sustenance. So the small
33:21space of a green roof acts like a
33:23magnet for wildlife.
33:25But the cedum green roof is a great choice
33:27because it's super hardy.
33:29These plants will go anywhere down to about
33:31minus 20 and up to about 40 degrees
33:33before they start to get injured.
33:35You don't need to water them so Jackie can
33:37just enjoy the beauty of this
33:39with very little maintenance. If you do
33:41anything to cedum green roofs
33:43it's to throw up a bit of fertiliser every
33:45four to six years just to keep
33:47it fed. But other than that
33:49it will sit there evergreen
33:51with a flush of flowers maybe once or twice a year
33:53and just look gorgeous.
33:57Now that Danny
33:59has completed the curved planter bed
34:01it's ready for it's tea based
34:03plants. Now Jackie
34:05and Deb love to have a good brew in a natter
34:07and this bed's just for them because
34:09it features all sorts of beautiful
34:11edible herbs like mint,
34:13chamomile if they're feeling a bit stressed.
34:15We've even got some marigolds that they could brew up
34:17to make a rather spicy tea
34:19to invigorate the senses. So no matter how
34:21they feel they can come out here, grab
34:23a few leaves, throw them in a teapot
34:25and switch off.
34:27You make it sound so easy and
34:29so dreamy. Well this whole garden
34:31is just dreamy fun isn't it?
34:33Loving plants regardless of
34:35the colour or form and just enjoying gardening.
34:37Yeah but look at this, I mean already
34:39it's looking so full but as soon as all these
34:41flowers come out and they're draping over
34:43this is going to get Jackie back out in the garden.
34:45I think so and she can pick what she likes
34:47each year, she can change it up
34:49it's kind of like a moving feast of different
34:51edibles to brew up with.
34:53Can you make me one
34:55for my house? Yeah once we finish this Chris
34:57I think Susie's taking commissions.
35:05As the final plants go in
35:07there's also a chance to test the water feature
35:09for the first time
35:11and after just two days
35:13Jackie and Deb's best friends garden
35:15is just about ready.
35:21Fancy a little brew? One of Lee's teas.
35:23Oh Lee's teas is open for business.
35:25It is. Chris do you know what
35:27an absolute stonker of a day.
35:29It was a stonker, that's a good word for it.
35:31Yeah I like that one, it was really really tough
35:33wasn't it? You know you didn't make it easy
35:35you didn't go for one pergola, you went for two
35:37and then you decided to put a green roof on one
35:39and you've got very curved raised
35:41beds that are wheelchair friendly, there's loads
35:43of complex stuff but you pulled it off
35:45it's brilliant. Well I think for Jackie
35:47she's got this really stressful job and she just deserves
35:49that lift so I thought let's go the extra
35:51mile and do you know what I think
35:53I'm really glad we did. I know and I think there's
35:55two things that really stand out for me
35:57one obviously is the colour, I think
35:59Jackie's going to be blown away by the
36:01colour but also the trough
36:03I love the trough. Yeah you've made
36:05such a good job of making it perfectly
36:07fit the pergola, you've renovated that pergola
36:09now as well so Jackie's got this beautiful patio
36:11it's almost like we've given her two gardens
36:13for the price of one.
36:15Two days ago, Jackie's garden was
36:17inaccessible, leaving her frustrated
36:19and stuck at the patio
36:21it lacked colour, except
36:23for on the fence panels
36:25Now
36:27with a six grand budget
36:29it's been transformed into
36:31a wheelchair friendly den of
36:33colour and vibrancy
36:35perfect for two best friends
36:37to enjoy together
36:39But will it be everything Jackie and Deb
36:41hoped for?
36:43Now your husband Ian spent a lot of time
36:45perfecting this garden for you didn't he
36:47and it holds significant importance
36:49to you
36:51So Jackie and Debs
36:53you wanted a garden where the two of you
36:55could socialise, catch up
36:57and have a giggle. Jackie you
36:59needed a garden that was fully accessible
37:01so that no plant was out of bounds
37:03and as you put it in your words, you could meddle
37:05with everything in the garden
37:07So without further ado, whenever you're ready
37:09open your eyes
37:13Oh my goodness
37:15Oh my god, no
37:17That's not my garden
37:19That's not my garden
37:21Oh god
37:23I actually want to cry
37:25Oh, that is so lovely
37:27Breathtakingly
37:29Please
37:31Thank you so much
37:33Before, Jackie's garden
37:35was drab, lacking in colour
37:37and inspiration
37:39Now the whole garden is an explosion
37:41of colour, full of vibrant
37:43pops of planting and features
37:45Do you recognise the oil drums
37:47from the design? Yes
37:49They look really lovely
37:51Everything is popping with colour
37:53and super accessible
37:55Is it what you expected?
37:57I didn't know what to expect
37:59It's just
38:01all those plants that you've got
38:03in all that colour
38:05The colours, they're so bright
38:07I mean, compared to what was there before
38:09it just stands out so much
38:11Look at all this
38:13This water feature
38:15is just amazing
38:17Gone is Jackie's
38:19aged and rotten pergola
38:21replaced with a gorgeous
38:23new wooden pergola with shading slats
38:25and water feature
38:27with its own water planting
38:29Oh, it's just so lovely
38:31Oh my god
38:35You're just going to want to be out here
38:37all the time now, aren't you?
38:39Thank you so much
38:41I've got a feeling this really is
38:43going to be the best friends forever garden
38:45Can you see yourself using it now?
38:47Oh, I wouldn't keep me out of it
38:49All this stuff
38:51I can get out, it's just amazing
38:53That's it, everything's
38:55waist height or above, so you are
38:57right in the action
38:59Jackie's garden trapped her at the back door
39:01Now she has all over
39:03access with smooth paving
39:05and a new patio made from
39:07beautiful wood effect porcelain tiles
39:09This was completely
39:11out of bounds
39:13but now you can journey all the way around
39:15this big circular paved
39:17Freedom!
39:19Freedom to look at the beautiful
39:21plants like the Gallegarda
39:23the bright yellows, the peaches, the purples
39:25all of these colour pops
39:27This sounds such a weak word
39:29lovely, but what else can I say?
39:31It's incredibly lovely
39:33The thing that stands out for me is that Jackie
39:35can now just get anywhere in that garden
39:37with ease, and there's so many
39:39things to look at everywhere she looks
39:41Before, this side of the garden
39:43had nothing going for it
39:45Now it contains a second pergola
39:47with a green living roof
39:49offering complete shade and respite
39:51from the elements
39:53Right, so if you follow me Jackie, we're now
39:55under the green roof covered area
39:57and I know you're a little bit apprehensive
39:59about this part of the design
40:01So what do you think?
40:03Well, I really love it. I can keep the sun out
40:05I've got this lovely shade
40:07I've got all this beauty right in front of me
40:09It's absolutely gorgeous
40:11It really is
40:13much more than I could have imagined
40:15It really is
40:17So nice to hear
40:19I mean, it's just amazing, isn't it?
40:21I just can't stop looking
40:23Every time I look I see something different
40:25And Leigh has one more
40:27part of the garden designed for both
40:29wheelchair access and best friends
40:31to share together
40:33Right, so let's move into this central
40:35brew bed
40:37The brew bed!
40:39If I had that in my garden
40:41I'd be having Leigh's teas every day
40:43What we've done is we've planted
40:45a mix of edibles such as strawberries
40:47mint, yeah, we've got
40:49trailing strawberries, mint
40:51chamomile, even the marigold
40:53petals you can use in teas
40:55So depending on your mood
40:57you can come out with a teapot, grab a few leaves
40:59brew up and have a good old matter
41:01Oh, how lovely
41:03Oh, that's just superb
41:05It just means that you can, in your words,
41:07meddle more in the garden
41:09Meddle to my heart's content
41:11It's just been so much fun
41:13It really will
41:15It really will be lovely
41:17Shall I test out the height?
41:19Yep, that'll be okay
41:21I can get right up to it
41:23It's everything I need
41:25So Jackie and Deb's
41:27the million dollar question
41:29Was it worth it?
41:31Let me think about this
41:33Do you reckon?
41:35Shall we have it?
41:37Yay!
41:39Amazing
41:41Now this has been a mammoth effort
41:43and I didn't do it on my own, I had some help
41:45from the Hiring Crime, Chris
41:47It was a pretty big job
41:49Yeah
41:51It's just, it's blown me away
41:53How does it feel being able to
41:55freely move around your garden
41:57and actually, you know, get out
41:59Oh, it's just something I
42:01never thought I'd have, to be honest
42:03I just thought, that's it really
42:05I can't do anything about it
42:07I just didn't have a clue where to start
42:09so
42:11it means a lot to me to have something
42:13that's mine
42:15and it's just so beautiful
42:17and just so accessible
42:19and so colourful
42:21It's definitely colourful
42:23It's got that lovely sound of water
42:25and it's got the shade
42:27and it's private
42:29but it's just beautiful
42:31Oh, you ticked all the boxes
42:33He did
42:35He's done a good job
42:39I'd really lost
42:41enthusiasm for being outside
42:43and enjoying the garden
42:45as it should be
42:47because I couldn't access anything
42:49but now, it's opened up
42:51the whole world for me
42:53Wonderful
42:55You've got your gardening mojo back
42:57You can come and help me
