Oh hello there, welcome to the latest edition of Gardening Matters with me Andrew Hutchinson.
00:10
In this edition we're going to be looking at what summer has offered and look ahead
00:14
to the autumn months as well.
00:17
Let's just start with this, this is a gorgeous bamboo which offers architectural structure
00:23
and something really really different for your garden.
00:25
It can be very invasive, that's why it's in a pot, but it offers contrast to the blooms
00:31
around the garden.
00:34
The summer months have been largely disappointing in terms of sunshine, but with the mixed weather
00:39
and lots of rain it's really really benefited the garden and the borders especially.
00:45
The plants here have really shot up from the rhododendrons through to the aces, through
00:50
to the fuchsias, it's really really really helped which will stand in good stead for
00:55
next year and the blooms that they will offer.
01:01
These geraniums offer wonderful wonderful colour throughout the summer months into autumn
01:06
and even sometimes if you're really lucky into winter as well.
01:09
So from June to November you get wonderful flowers but it's very very important that
01:14
you keep deadheading, so keep deadheading which means that the flowers will continue
01:26
to grow and stimulate regrowth.
01:30
At this time of year it's really really important that you keep on top of your weeding in your
01:34
grass and in your borders just like this.
01:42
And also remember to make sure that your hedges are trimmed as well.
01:48
So as you go around the garden centres it's important to pick and choose plants which
01:52
might suit your garden.
01:54
Take the time and trouble to have a look, take your time and invest really really well.
02:00
These alstroemeria will be perfect for next year for late spring, early summer.
02:07
I buy in threes or fives, it's really important that you buy in odd numbers but they should
02:13
come up really really well.
02:15
They're in front of the patio doors and hopefully they'll be real showstoppers.
02:20
So this is a salvia, started life as a cutting, thanks very much to my next door neighbour.
02:26
It's really really come on over the last month or two thanks to the mixed weather.
02:31
I plan to keep it in the pot over winter to make it more hardy before I plant it out in
02:36
the spring at the side of the alstroemeria.
02:42
As we move into autumn fingers crossed we might get some better weather which means
02:46
you need to keep your garden well watered, look after your lawn, do any repairs and do
02:52
the jobs that you need to do ahead of winter where we all have some downtime.
02:56
So fingers crossed come the spring your garden will be a blooming success.
03:02
Thanks for watching, bye for now.
