A mass funeral for nine soldiers who were among at least 35 people killed near an army checkpoint in northwest Pakistan.

A security official says 12 militants and 13 soldiers were killed in the clash.

The Pakistan Taliban is claiming responsibility. They say the attack was in response to a U.S. drone strike in neighboring North Waziristan last month in which two commanders were killed.

Officials said that two bodies at the scene had suicide bomb belts on them.

The militants also targeted a house with rockets, killing 10 members of one family, including three children.
