Deadly car bomb strikes Iraqi city Kirkuk

The scene of a car bomb in the Iraqi city of Kirkuk that left three dead, including two police officers.

Eight others were wounded and a number of nearby shops were damaged in the blast late Tuesday night.

Violence in Iraq is at its highest in more than two years, as Sunni Islamists and an al Qaeda affiliate launch regular attacks, seeking to undermine the Shi'ite-led government.

Insurgents have made one major assault a month since U.S. troops withdrew in December.

More than 100 people were killed in coordinated bomb and gun attacks on September 9, on mostly Shi'ite Muslim targets across Iraq.
