Two killed, bystanders wounded in NY shooting

The scene outside New York's Empire State building after a man shot his former co-worker.

SOUNDBITE: Raymond Kelly, New York City Police Commissioner saying:

"Johnson produced a pistol and fired at close range."

The mid-morning attack sparked a shootout with police on the street that left two people including the shooter dead and wounded eight eight others. Authorities say designer Jeffrey Johnson was angry after being fired from a store more than a year ago.

SOUNDBITE: Michael Bloomberg, New York City Mayor saying:

"He killed one person and at least nine other people were shot and some may have been shot accidentally by police officers responded immediately and while confronting the suspect and fatally shooting him unfortunately there may have been other victims as well."

All of the injured bystanders are expected to survive.

Rebecca Fox says she saw Johnson moments after he was shot by police.

SOUNDBITE: Eyewitness Rebecca Fox saying:

"I don't know where exactly he has been shot, but I saw that the police were turning him over and he flipped back down. I saw that his head lifted up a little slightly and then went back down."

She also says she saw one of the bystanders leaning up against the building after being shot in the foot.

The shootout near the popular New York attraction was the third mass shooting in the U.S. in the past few months.
