Shelling in Homs despite ceasefire pledge

Smoke filled skies over Homs -- this according to amateur video posted to a social media website which Reuters cannot independently verify.

Syrian forces bombarded the city on Monday despite President Bashar al-Assad's promise to establish a ceasefire. The Syrian leader pledged to UN/Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to stop attacks on protesters and to withdraw their tanks from the city.

The shelling by Assad's forces comes just as Annan is due to brief the UN Security Council.

The head of the International Red Cross is headed to Damascus amid reports that as many as 70 people were killed in the country on Sunday.
