Obama is in Darwin to address troops after he and Gillard announced the deployment of U.S. Marines, ships and aircraft in Darwin, only 820 km (500 miles) from Indonesia.
Later on Thursday, Obama will fly to the Indonesian Island of Bali to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
