Bono joined Nelson Mandela's wife Graca Machel (PRON: grasa mashel), South Africa's deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe (PRON: khalema motlante), and others during a thanksgiving service at St. George's Cathedral. However, the event was mired in controversy, due to the government denying a visa for the Dalai Lama to attend the celebrations.
