Self-Defense Workout: Hook - part of the women's fitness video series by GeoBeats.

We are going to look at the hook with the lead hand today. In this case Nicole is right-handed so she is going to throw her hook with her left hand. So if she will get into her fighting stance.

The hook is a very very powerful shot. It is a punch that uses your entire body, really uses your torso and your core very nicely. So from here, Nicole is going to slightly shift her body to one side and now her elbows actually come up, and as she comes back with her entire body she uses the force of her body to throw that hook. It is a very very powerful shot.

Often you can see the hook come after a jab cross combination, so she will throw her left hand first. A jab, a right hand, and then a left hook to follow up. Ok! It is a fantastic punch for power, also to set punches up. Sometimes you can throw a hook through the body, so throw a hook low, and then come back up to the head. So as your partner drops his defense, his or her defense, you can come back with hook.

So if Nicole will face me. If we are here and she throws up that hook to my body now all of a sudden, my right hand is going to drop to protect my body. Once you drops she comes up high, BOOM! And I go to sleep. So this is a very powerful punch that uses your entire body.

And of course for fitness purposes you want to be able to switch stances. Use your right and left, because it is a great way to work that core and you really get a great workout using that Hook. You can again use dumb bells for resistance, its awesome! Or just drill in your bunch of hooks back to back to back. This is a fantastic workout as well.
