00:06We all have far too many belongings
00:09clutter in our homes and lives.
00:11Oh, my God, I can't actually open it.
00:14Avert your eyes.
00:15Oh, no.
00:16Come through the doordrobe.
00:17You'll be good at this.
00:18Would you ride it?
00:21But imagine if you could lay out
00:23every single item you own.
00:26So much stuff.
00:27Oh, my God.
00:29Stop it.
00:30Mom.
00:31And then decide what should stay.
00:33Do you need it?
00:34Do you love it?

00:36Oh, Diddy is going to love you.
00:37Just leave it.

01:30Mission accomplished.
01:31Sunny Hazelmere.
01:32Here we come.
01:33So cute around here.
01:34You better share some of that.
01:35Oh, have I missed the road?
01:36Got another family expecting us to work some magic in their home.
01:43I want big projects.
01:44I want big projects.
01:45I want big projects this time round.
01:46We're in the Surrey Hills on our way to meet a family in need of a serious sort-out.
01:50Oh, tractor?
01:51You're good.
01:52You're good.
01:53Oh, okay, thank you.
01:54Everyone is so polite in Hazelmere.
01:55Yeah, Bob.
01:56Keep it quiet.
01:57We're not, eh?
01:58Been out a dead end U.
02:18this is Shirley and Martin's house they've lived here for two generations Martin grew up here with
02:38his family then Shirley and Martin raised their kids here now the girls have moved out wow and
02:43all they're left with is clutter should we go in and see what we're doing with the family out we can
02:50have a quick snoop around there's a large living area on the ground floor and a kitchen at the back
02:57of the house and upstairs there are three bedrooms did this fall off your car we all know who needs
03:11this is the problem with too much stuff there's really small trinkety things that you're gonna
03:22have to sort through huh good luck I'm so sorry guys I'm just trying to rearrange the clutter back
03:28down they're gonna be going down dead ends if they will use this map I don't think I've ever had a
03:35map ever since I've got a car it's had a sat now how do you know which line am I on now I just love
03:42that you walk into this room and immediately you feel like you're in a home yes it's so homely it's
03:47yeah they seem just so family orientated it's lovely yeah but it is full of clutter what is this room
03:55it's empty other than these giant boxes it's a three-seater sofa do we think that they're gonna
04:01replace those sofas are they gonna go in here oh no surely not you can't put more sofas in this
04:07room I mean that's enough isn't it the back room may be a mystery but in the kitchen the cluster
04:13problem is much clearer oh there's no surface space oh my gosh oh it's stacked high in there
04:21there is no oh wow how many is in there 100 tea towels I don't know if I'm gonna be able to shut this
04:28to be honest she's struggling oh look more utensils covered in shoelace this really just needs a whole
04:36refresh and a proper organize we've a plan in place for downstairs let's see what's upstairs oh my gosh
04:45but every single one is full of towels are you kidding me there's loads oh no look you just
04:52definitely don't need this many oh delay meanwhile I'm in the first of the three bedrooms look at all
05:03these trophies these are like 10 years old 2013 2014 so this was one of the girls bedrooms and they've
05:10literally moved out and nothing has come with them let it all here and it stayed the same and
05:15then their old rooms just become a dumping room yeah the kids move out and the clutter moves in
05:19exactly that it needs to go back to having a proper purpose we've got work to do what is this
05:25it's a giant carrot in a tuxedo oh my god oh look at him he's lovely this is actual Joe swash when he
05:33goes to the award ceremonies it's like your wedding photos all over what's in this room next to inspect
05:42is the eldest daughter's old bedroom definitely not the master bedroom oh you never know they might have
05:49the other thing for baby dolls this has had a lot of love I'd say when the grandkids around this is
05:55the room that they occupy well we've got a lot of cupboard space in here oh stop it empty drawers
06:03on the surface it looked okay in here but now we've pulled all this out it's just hiding chaos in here
06:09isn't it yeah it is and I think because they don't really use this room it's not a focus so they kind
06:13of forgotten about it aha mom and dad's room avert your eyes oh no oh what is in here that I can't
06:24see chair drove why do people have a chair in their room when they're all they're gonna do is throw
06:30clothes on it they've run out of space in their wardrobe I mean how are they finding anything in
06:36that wardrobe once stuff starts piling up outside the designated areas for storage well you know it
06:42every surface is covered every top of the wardrobe is covered and it's out of control just none of
06:47this working oh wow oh my goodness what a beautiful garden it is so well looked after no wonder they
06:57haven't got time to go through the house yeah I'd be out here most of the time uh what's it saying in
07:01it is saying help oh my ultimate man cave that is the oldest computer I've ever seen look look at the
07:13workbench on this someone obviously loves DIY in here and it's such a shame that they've got that
07:18beautiful workbench and all of those tools that they've looks like they've had forever and ever
07:22yeah and there's just no way they get into that yeah no it's impossible to use anything in here
07:27isn't yeah I need to give him this bench right let's get out of here and make a plan okay I think
07:34the hardest thing in this house is that I don't believe since they moved in there's ever been a
07:40clear out no there'll be such a nice opportunity for us to give them a refresh the garden is slightly
07:57different to inside the house isn't it it just looks like perhaps you've had the same stuff for
08:05generations as I try and get rid of things and I love that out of it we've been married for 44
08:17years we've been very happy in this house this is a house that I was brought up in my moved here when
08:25dad was in the war and I love it I absolutely love this place but now there is lots of stuff in the
08:32house most of it in fact is my fault right let's have a look for that chisel I do tend to think I
08:38won't throw that away because it might come in useful one day over the years also you find that
08:42you keep everything and we don't ever like throwing things away having raised their two children in the
08:49house Sarah and younger sister Catherine Martin and Shirley now help look after their three grandsons as
08:55well as still working mum and dad are lovely they've always always put us first mum have you seen your
09:01baby wife but they were just on the table growing up the clutter is all I've ever known as with
09:07everything they've gone lost into the abyss since Sarah and I have moved out I think it's definitely
09:13got worse it wasn't until I was making a home of my own that I really realized how cluttered the house
09:19was because this was always just normal for me growing up they do hoard a lot of things that we had
09:25from when we were younger and it's just got a bit crazy you do miss them because their things are
09:33there in their rooms makes it feel like they're still here they're so special to us there was a
09:39time when I thought I would never be a mum Martin and I thought that we would probably have children
09:44within the first year of our marriage but realized that things weren't happening I don't know to this
09:50day how we got through that time and then we started to think about adoption the whole process
09:56took eight years mum and dad adopted me and Catherine having that structure and everything
10:02that I believe a child needs to have a happy and loving upbringing was something that we wouldn't
10:07have had if we had been in the care system when you adopt children you do appreciate the children
10:12huge amount because it's such a long journey to get them I don't want to get rid of any of their
10:19things okay I have tried to help in the past I never want it to come across as an attack but
10:25it has ended up in you know a bit of confrontation maybe has anyone seen the garage keys normally when
10:31you put keys down they're so obvious you can see them but they just completely disappear having all
10:37the clutter is not good for either of us I hate it I just give in I just want to close the door and put
10:45a lock on it are you now ready to like start a refresh absolutely I think that's what we need
10:54to do I'm so it'll be good for them to just have their home back and just have their own that own
10:58space and yeah I think it would be amazing to get your home to the best that it can be we have to let
11:04go of at least half of what's in the house already um is that does that sound okay or does it sound
11:10daunting I'm looking forward to it right we need to make this happen let's get inside and get packing
11:18yes there might be an avalanche those old floppy disks what's a floppy disk with several decades of
11:31possessions to pack in just 12 hours come bearing in ah lovely me and the team have our work cut out
11:38Shirley let's do this that's for me it's for you so how does it make you feel with the house the way
11:45that it's got to really sad really sad this was Martin's parents bedroom this wallpaper no what
11:53they had wow I know I hate this room I only come in it to sleep oh no it's not our home anymore you
12:03know it's just being taken over by so much clutter why now do you think that you finally got to a point
12:08where you feel like actually this is it we've got a few years left before we retire and we really want
12:14to look into fostering that's one thing that's been in our dreams for since we had the girls
12:19really yeah honestly it's just such an incredible thing to do Joe grew up in a home where his mum
12:26fostered Joe's always said that when our kids grow up and move out that's what he'd love to do so I get
12:31it we'd love to do it I mean the girls are thrilled with that idea did they always know they were adopted
12:37the girls yes since they were old enough see that was Sarah when she was a baby ah having that baby
12:44in our arms and walking through our front door our baby girl was just I'm a bit emotional about that
12:53you know because it was just to this day I just cannot believe how lucky we were I just feel amazing
13:03that we've had that chance to have these little ones and bring them up to what they are now and
13:08their mums and and if we do this this process well you'll get the chance to do it all over again it's
13:15actually a massive incentive for us to really want to do this because there's such a huge goal at the
13:20end of it it's a lot of pressure don't get me wrong but something that special it just makes the
13:27whole process even more worth it that's not gonna go Rob no no big strong girl I know it's a little
13:35bit heavy where's the feather I want to carry the feather box out of here two hours in Dilly is
13:41tackling the bedroom that time forgot well girls this is exciting this room my own bedroom so like my
13:52trophies and my things are still here you very kindly left it for mom and dad and what did mom
13:57and dad do with it left it where it was so when you left it obviously it wasn't like this no no
14:03absolutely not no but there was a bed in here okay and it was at the mattress for the bed now I use
14:08that and I put it on the floor of that room when I stay with my two kids and my fiance we have to drag
14:13that through drag that through to the other room and put it on the floor I mean that must be a little
14:17bit stressful yeah do you think it's been getting them down it definitely yeah I think mum's
14:21realized now that it's dysfunctional but I mean your mom and dad are the most selfless people as
14:26well yeah you're both adopted so we have something in common as well so here's to being adopted high
14:33five it's the best club in the world it is that's you get that away from me how I'll see all the way
14:39Sarah excuse me we are halfway through the day and while we've got most of the rooms packed up I bet
14:46you're great at Tetris not one is empty there's so much to do I don't know if we're gonna make it
14:55next to clear is Martin's overflowing garage which hasn't been touched yet
15:01Martin I'm loving in here this is heaven for me it's absolute heaven so much history in this garage
15:08this computer looks old it is that was the very first computer I bought and I don't know
15:12why I've still hung on to it oh my god this is probably a collector's item oh my gosh and would
15:18you want to actually use the workbench still is that something you'd like to get back to yeah
15:21I'd love to yeah did you use this with your dad yeah should it be nice to maybe have the grandkids
15:26here to do some oh absolutely yeah decent method of branding that aren't you Martin that's a little
15:31bit more than the tipple oh I found the cat oh that's brilliant oh look how young mum was though
15:38mum's mullet this is the first time I ever met you that I was so excited I really wanted a little
15:42sister there we go how is there still stuff on these shows we've just the last few items to pack away
15:54yes we're finally getting to the end of the day and 50 years of the Welland's possessions head off to
16:04the warehouse hi bye bye oh my god how big is this room yeah
16:15over the next two days the family will be faced with every single one of their possessions which
16:28have been laid out in a 12 000 square foot warehouse and they've got so much blooming stuff
16:34I've even had to rope in dilly but they literally will be on their way now I need to get out of here
16:41and get changed and get to the house oh my god I love you I love you I love you
16:45good luck be ruthless I'll try can I just say before we go in there whatever happens in that
16:54warehouse however stressed we get with each other as soon as we walk out those doors we go back to
16:59normal happy family can we just pinky back yeah okay hey get over it that's crazy how are you oh really
17:11good thank you great to see you how are you all feeling excited nervous I cannot believe the size
17:19of this place so are you ready to get in and get started so ready let's go here we go I don't know
17:27I don't want to look you have to look Shirley I'm scared oh my god stop it mum no no way it goes all the way back over there
17:47I can't believe this is all our stuff I'm as shocked as you are I want to get in there come on let's go and have a look
17:53start among the items laid out we discovered 306 soft toys 124 towels 106 spanners and 189 out-of-date food items
18:10are you all okay I cannot believe this is our contents of our home where did we put it I don't know I don't know what to say
18:19I've been shocked I don't know if you saw your shoe section as we were walking in I saw it I'm always saying to him I haven't got any shoes
18:26do you know why that might be we found 28 single shoes that don't have a pair so I kept thinking where is the other shoe
18:34I can't believe it but at least there'll be some easy wins because no one needs 28 odd shoes right so we can say goodbye to those straight away
18:41absolutely absolutely okay you ready to go yeah let's do it the family needs to decide what to keep
18:48and what to donate recycle or sell first challenge is to tackle that out of control and out of date kitchen
18:56I feel like we should start here this is the three rows of out of date food
19:02it's all out of date all of it is out of date pasta sell by whoever finds the oldest product in the piles wins
19:12let's go go go go this one is 2008 2004 potato bake I want to open it and smell it I dare you
19:20oh my god do you reckon nutmeg from 2010 still got its flavor once candy canes go smooshy do you think that's it
19:33once they're no longer hard 2004 is the oldest so far oh I think I'm winning March 97 97 that's the year you were born
19:4497 does it feel weird to think you've got like 10 15 year old food it just feels awful cannot
19:54believe I've got that old food right let's go go go we done it right let's take these boxes down
20:01what a great start and four full boxes here means lots of empty cupboard space back at the house
20:08right let's get more sections done exactly like this if we can
20:16over at the house you and stripping away the past
20:20all right there guys how you doing morning all right okay you're on it this morning
20:25it's got to go yeah good eh watch my face with that steamer
20:29I thought I'd give you a facial while I'm here you know I like to multitask
20:33let's leave him to strip off Rob and Dilly head upstairs to make plans for a family-friendly
20:39sleepover room in Sarah's old bedroom oh this is a lot better I mean five million times better
20:47so we've got this huge alcove space here yeah this room needs to sleep full yes so you're gonna have
20:53one double that's two yes large single that's one the fourth one we're gonna place underneath and then when
21:01somebody comes around then you pull the mattress out from underneath the bed
21:06wow trundle bed the dream sleepover house with granny and grandad and then above I'm looking to place lovely deep storage
21:15and the great thing about storage there means that there's more space for the kids to play
21:19multi-functional room lovely right I need to go and look for some storage it's gonna fit that space
21:25and I'm gonna take some measurements if you can't get hold of one of these steamers then get yourself
21:33a bucket of hot water and a paint roller and soak it in the water and what you can do is take a fork
21:40and use that to score lines in your wallpaper and roll on the water and get that wallpaper soaking
21:49oh just comes off like a dream back at the warehouse Martin and Shirley are flying through the bedding
21:59we'll keep those but I don't want these pillows they're horrible they're foam
22:04but daughter Sarah and Katherine have some serious work to do time to address toys
22:12wow it looks like there are still two young children living in this house
22:17three hundred and six no soft toys it's crazy that's crazy
22:23I'm assuming some of these are your old toys none of this you would take to your house yes I would
22:28oh my dwarfs yeah oh I got quite poorly when I was younger it wasn't a nice time but they bring me
22:34happy memories and I don't think of I don't think she'll ever part with the dwarfs
22:38and that's everything the rest of them can absolutely go especially the creepy doll with one-eyed
22:44yeah the creepy doll oh she is a bit creepy and my mum's had her since a baby she says you won't get rid of her
22:49Shirley we were thinking of perhaps letting go of the one-eyed doll she was my baby when I was just eight years old
22:57what made you hold on to her when I was a child I used to hold her like a real baby
23:03and talk to her and I used to say to her things that I never got told by my mother
23:07which was I will always look after you for the rest of my life
23:11that's why she's with me
23:13oh Shirley
23:15I'm such an emotional wreck honestly
23:19I'm sorry it's the process I feel partly responsible
23:22no honestly she's got to go
23:24can I just give her a kiss goodbye
23:26yes you can
23:28thank you for all those lovely years
23:30you're sweet dying it is
23:32oh now I feel bad
23:34yeah look at you holding her
23:36I think I had to rock her all the way down to the donate pile
23:38you got it
23:40yep
23:42it's a soft toy
23:44thankfully not all the toys are so hard to let go of
23:46it's good isn't it
23:48it's amazing it's not just good
23:50look at all this space
23:52this is incredible
23:53you've done so well
23:54you've completely exceeded my expectation
23:56yeah
23:57the wellings are doing so well letting go of the past
24:00do I need a map of Beijing?
24:01I mean I don't think you need a map of anything because Google Maps now exists
24:05but I cannot stop thinking about that doll
24:08I can't leave creepy here
24:10I feel terrible that she's
24:11we've convinced her to let it go
24:13because it's a huge part of her life
24:15and probably the reason that she is who she is
24:17and ended up you know
24:19being such an amazing family woman and an incredible mother
24:22I bet I can make her not creepy
24:24she just needs a new eye really
24:26maybe a new dress
24:27some conditioner in her hair
24:29should be right as rain
24:31seeing how much the doll meant to Shirley
24:33I really want to find out more about the memories it has brought back
24:36that was my father
24:38oh is that your dad?
24:39yeah and he meant the world to me
24:41you were speaking about your mum earlier
24:42yes
24:43I never can remember once my mother ever saying she loved me
24:46aww
24:47and I always said that if I ever had children
24:49I would be a completely different mum
24:52I wanted to be a mum that cared and loved her family
24:55you broke the cycle and decided that's not how I'm going to be as a parent
24:58no absolutely not
24:59and you've done the complete opposite
25:00look at all your nice cards
25:02this one has to be probably the best that I've ever had
25:06thank you for all the things you've done
25:08I must be quite a lucky girl to have the world's best mum
25:11and you can't say much more than that can you?
25:14no it's so nice
25:16it's wonderful
25:17but it's not just the children's poems that have been kept in this house
25:21you've got a whole jar of teeth
25:24yeah
25:25dear Toothberry
25:26as these teeth are double the size
25:28can I have double the money please?
25:32Shirley
25:33do you want to keep Sarah's teeth?
25:35no
25:36definitely not
25:37no?
25:38I'm not sure if the recycle centre will have them but
25:40these are so cute these memories
25:43I feel like everything else can go as long as mum and dad are happy
25:46Shirley and Martin
25:48just a real quick glance at this section
25:50because we're going to lift it up and it's all going to go
25:52if there's anything in here that you want us to keep
25:54because we're happy to let this section go
25:56it's all your teenage stuff
25:58yes
25:59it's a hard one isn't it this one
26:01is it?
26:02yeah
26:03why?
26:04to me
26:05it's all that they've achieved over the years
26:07this part of your life was just the world to dad and I
26:11yeah
26:12you know
26:14it was because they were adopted
26:15and the continuation of their life story is here
26:18do you know what?
26:19I think
26:20these are your memories
26:21yeah they are
26:22and I realise that now
26:23this is just like a big massive section of love
26:26isn't it?
26:27I'll make you a memory box
26:28and you don't have to let go of everything
26:30maybe the GCSE books
26:31yeah
26:32and the learner plates
26:34over at the house
26:38oh it brings me joy when you're cleaning Ewan
26:42the team need to come up with a plan to solve the storage problem in Martin and Shirley's bedroom
26:47so no more dreaded chair droves
26:50I just feel like the bed would be better situated here and move the wardrobe there
26:54hey guys
26:55hey
26:56as if I imagine
26:57we might have a little job for you
26:58talk to me
26:59they did have a wardrobe and I feel like we need to use that wardrobe
27:04it's about the up cycle
27:06I love doing an up cycle
27:07not only are we going to extend the height
27:09we're going to increase the depth
27:11because it was a rather shallow wardrobe
27:13yeah
27:14when you've got a shallow wardrobe
27:15you can never close the door properly
27:17that's so frustrating
27:18really frustrating
27:19and then I'm going to tie all of that in by making it look like it's a fitted wardrobe
27:23Jesus
27:24and that's all from one existing wardrobe
27:26we save a lot of money on materials
27:28and we completely change the look and make it even more grand
27:31oh I'm excited to see this
27:33as Rob cracks on the day is almost done at the warehouse
27:36and it is time to tackle a huge section
27:39Martin's tool collection
27:41but some of this these are your dad's tools that he used to use
27:44some
27:45wow
27:46he didn't throw stuff away either
27:47back in the war
27:48back in the times when things when times were hard
27:50yeah
27:51nothing got thrown away
27:52everything got reused recycled
27:54and you never knew when you'd need it
27:55or if you'd ever get the chance to get it again
27:57no
27:58that's the thing isn't it
27:59they almost hold some sentimental value
28:01absolutely
28:02so I understand why they're still in the garage
28:03because you think
28:04if your father used these tools
28:05it's a memory
28:06yeah
28:07it is
28:08it's not just a tool anymore
28:09but we hold on to so much that we can't see what we've got
28:11yeah
28:12and then we end up with 300 spanners
28:14yeah
28:15and it's
28:17yeah you choose your favourite
28:18that little hammer
28:20I use that quite a lot too
28:22is that everything you want to keep
28:23nope
28:24I'll keep the small one
28:26and then I can put the rest in the box
28:27yep
28:28this is good
28:30you're doing so well Martin
28:32should we take the tools down
28:34sure
28:35oh my god
28:37people say why are you going to the gym
28:39you want to lose weight
28:40I say no I just want to keep up with salt your life out
28:42it's a nightmare
28:43yeah
28:44three
28:45two
28:46one
28:47feels good doesn't it
28:51it feels like there's half a lifetime going here
28:53there is literally
28:55look all this space
28:56yes
28:57right this is it
28:59we have got ten minutes until we are getting kicked out of this warehouse
29:03so it's grab and go
29:04let's
29:05how many windbreaks does one family need
29:07they can all go
29:08yes
29:09come on
29:14it was a present
29:15does it matter that it was a present
29:16I'm not going to pressure you to do anything
29:18it can go
29:19let's go
29:20big
29:21it's big
29:22come on girls
29:24okay three two one
29:25oh my god
29:26sorry
29:27I'm so sorry
29:28last bit come on
29:29oh
29:32well done
29:33good job
29:34I could collapse
29:35you did amazing
29:36look at it
29:37this is incredible
29:38well done everyone
29:39that was a long
29:40yeah
29:41tough day
29:42that is a real achievement
29:44ready to sit down and have a cup of tea
29:46oh yeah
29:47ready to collapse
29:49oh my
29:50after ten hours in the warehouse
29:52the Wellens have smashed through five sections
29:55it's a great start
29:56I really feel like part of the family
29:58and I'm enjoying it so much
30:00I love you guys
30:08it's the final day in the warehouse
30:10and for once
30:11Dilly can't moan about the work I've left us
30:13look at all this space
30:15feel like today we're going to be starting off on the right foot
30:19well done Stacey
30:20thank you
30:21but there's still a lot to get through
30:24it's good to see you
30:25it's good to see you
30:26so lovely to see you
30:27oh thank you
30:28look at you
30:29you brought the sunshine
30:30nice to see you
30:32never underestimate what you did yesterday
30:34so well done
30:35what we do still need to do is reduce it a little bit more
30:39quite a lot more
30:40but we are focusing on the things that we love
30:43while Sarah and Katherine head for hats
30:46Dad's got three of the exact same hats
30:48of course it does
30:49get rid of the ones that are more worn
30:51Dilly tackles towels
30:54but do we need 124 towels
30:57really?
30:58124 mixed towels
31:01I mean you've got enough for a small department store here
31:04I don't think we need all of these do we?
31:06no we don't
31:07I reckon four towels per person
31:10and anything else that we donate
31:13will donate to the dog sanctuary
31:15animal sanctuaries always need towels
31:17let's blitz this section
31:18that's all gonna go to the doggies
31:21the sorting is off to a flying start
31:24and Dilly's got a job for the girls
31:27this is a typical grandparents house
31:30with kids clothes
31:31yeah
31:32isn't it?
31:33she keeps like a lot of the baby things
31:35yeah
31:36so my son is now five
31:37so do we need to keep these in a memory box do you think?
31:40maybe like one
31:41she can have a little memory box of grandchildren's baby stuff
31:44she doesn't want their whole entire wardrobe does she?
31:46she does but she's not gonna anymore
31:48do you think your attitudes change
31:51now you've got your own children about being adopted
31:54I know for me when I had my own child
31:56Nelly she was my first bloodline
31:58same
31:59I always said that
32:00because I think oh my god you're the only person I can actually
32:03I'm related to
32:04I've got no one else in this country
32:06no one else in my life
32:07and it's a really weird feeling isn't it?
32:09it's so interesting
32:10it was really strange
32:11it was really really strange
32:12and I feel like it's definitely healed a part of me
32:15I think that's why I've always wanted kids since I was a teenager
32:17I've always wanted that
32:19not that we had any void with mum and dad
32:21but I think meeting you and talking about this
32:23it is the most open my mum in particular has ever been
32:27because I think as kids it was always
32:28no don't tell anyone
32:30you would feel like oh it's a secret I can't tell anyone
32:32I think she was scared that people wouldn't see us as hers
32:35and that ingrained a shame even though it shouldn't and it wasn't intentional
32:38and that kind of carried on through life until this process
32:41for quite some time
32:42this process watching my mum be like this is what I did
32:44and owning it
32:45it's just taking that shame away
32:46it's been really a healing process for me
32:48I can't have any more children
32:50so now I'm hopefully going to go full circle and adopt myself
32:53look at my arms
32:54that's so exciting
32:55oh my goodness
32:56I'd love to do that
32:57I feel so grateful that we're part of that journey
32:59thanks for sharing your story with us
33:01oh my god
33:02right let's get these boxes in
33:05look at that
33:06I know
33:07all that space in their wardrobes
33:08I know
33:09exactly
33:10how crazy
33:11over at the Wellens family home
33:13and there you have it
33:14Rob is fitting the bases for the kids beds in the new family room
33:18our two bed bases are done
33:21so this is the bed base that when the family comes around
33:27and need extra bed space
33:29that pulls out from underneath
33:31over in the garage
33:33Ewan's bringing Martin's neglected workbench back to life
33:37so all this rust on Martin's clamp
33:39we can get off with a bit of screwed up tin foil
33:45it's like a magic eraser
33:47back in the warehouse old memories are stirring up emotions
33:52these are all the cards from when they got me
33:55they're so pleased for you both that the long wait is over
33:58and it just got me
34:00Sarah found some stuff that was from when we first adopted her
34:03so it just brings back all the memories and it does pull on your heartstrings a bit
34:08while the girls sort through the cards
34:12Dilly takes Shirley through her treasured vinyl collection
34:16music the soundtrack to our lives
34:18this is my world
34:19music is my world
34:21I absolutely adore my music as you can see
34:24I mean there are some real classics here
34:27yeah absolutely
34:28have a think about
34:30okay what you would ideally like to keep
34:32Jason Donovan
34:34no that could go
34:35Diana Ross and the Supremes
34:36keep
34:37can you remember the new kids on the block what their names were
34:40no
34:41you can't keep it you don't love them enough
34:42no I don't want that one no
34:43this is good
34:44this is good
34:45this is good
34:46I mean on average some of these vinyls nowadays
34:48you can get anything from like 5 to 50 pounds
34:50so I reckon you can at least get 150, 200 quid for all these records
34:54good start though Shirley
34:55amazing
34:56let's take these down
34:58you've cleared so many
35:00we've just 30 minutes left
35:03anything that is not coming back to the house has to be put in one of the piles
35:07let's go
35:09right this rails going
35:13hello it's the 90s
35:15yes yes you can have all your phones back
35:18bread maker
35:20mum's never made a loaf of bread
35:22all of these
35:23yep all of them
35:24two more minutes
35:26let's go
35:27to the piles
35:28oh my god
35:30she's yanking me why don't you
35:31five
35:32four
35:33three
35:34two
35:35one
35:36that's it
35:38give yourselves a big hug
35:41woo
35:42woo
35:43woo
35:44woo
35:45oh well done
35:47wow
35:48we've done it
35:49what a relief
35:51it has been a challenge in two days but what a result
35:56the family have let go of well over 50% of their possessions
36:01you have done utterly amazing
36:03look at those piles
36:04that is insane
36:06do you feel like this is going to be different for you going home
36:10the beginning of a brand new start for us
36:12you've absolutely smashed it
36:14how are you doing
36:16good you
36:17i've got a television
36:19it's 9am
36:20and over a hundred boxes of the wellens possessions need to be unpacked and put back in their house
36:27morning
36:28how far away from being finished is everything
36:29i've just crept over 50%
36:31you've been sitting in that green nose eating tomatoes haven't you
36:33this is no time to joke
36:34that means everything in these boxes we've got nowhere to put it
36:35yeah
36:36i am about to put the last few panels on the main wardrobe
36:37we need to move
36:38well two belts on all right i'm gonna get on it
36:39right
36:40rob better get on it because we have only got a day
36:42and the key to getting this house back to a fully functioning family home is the storage
37:03i'm just screwing up
37:06the last carcass which will then go on top
37:11on top of the existing wardrobe
37:15so with this done now i can start transporting them inside the house for them to be fitted
37:22while ewan gets scrubbing in the bathroom
37:24i'd like to keep one of these hung up in the shower so you know when you're waiting for your hair conditioner to do its thing
37:30you can give the shower a quick once over
37:33in the garden dilly's sprucing up the garage
37:36so we had a load of these sweet jars in the warehouse that were going empty
37:40i thought let's just fill them we've got some rope in here we've got some bungee cords
37:44i've got some streamer cable how nice does that look we're always trying to repurpose
37:49that's the most important thing about anything organisational is that you're using what you've got
37:53and that's exactly what rob's doing up in martin and shirley's bedroom with their old wardrobes
38:00i'm currently reassembling the wardrobe the next stage is for me to put my extensions on the top
38:06that will make the wardrobe even taller and doubling the storage space so there's a lot of work to do and we've got to work like crazy
38:15rob isn't the only one getting handy with the power tools
38:19i am going to make a three-tiered lazy susan spinning tool station
38:25all i've done is drawn lines on the first lazy susan where i want to drill my holes
38:31dilly's worked so hard at labelling and organising all of his tools
38:35so now it just needs the perfect home
38:38do you reckon it was someone called susan who invented the lazy susan
38:42she obviously wasn't lazy
38:45i'm just putting some screws through my holes into the emdf
38:50so now i'm gonna do exactly the same again
38:54here we go
38:56that's the second part to my lazy susan
38:59last one
39:00here we go
39:06alright?
39:07yeah you?
39:08yeah how's it going?
39:09i've made a merry-go-round for all of the little bits and boxes
39:12oh i love it
39:14i know
39:15that's genius stace
39:16come on
39:17it's gonna take more than one genius to get this house ready
39:20so as it's school holidays i've asked joe to bring my eldest son zach to come and help us out
39:26hey hey are you on your way with zach?
39:30please pick something up for me on the way
39:32i just need you to grab this one doll
39:34because i haven't got time to go out and get it and it's really important
39:37i'll send you the address now
39:39i love you thank you
39:40bye
39:41this handy little bit of kit is actually only a magnetic knife strip
39:47so you know what you'd have in your kitchen you get them they're so cheap and cheerful
39:50thought why not put it in here
39:52this is gonna be such a game changer for martin
39:54yay
40:00brought the whole family
40:01well yeah
40:02our grandparents are away mate this is us now
40:04is this the family you were telling me about who foster?

40:11aww
40:12it'll be us in 20 years if you get what you want
40:14it will be mate
40:15here's the doll you want from your boot

40:27here you go she needs a nappy change so
40:29done a poo poo
40:30aww
40:31aww
40:32what's that smell?
40:33i think it's rose's bum because daddy decided he'll wait until he meets me to change it
40:38to change it
40:39come on let's go and do your bum bum
40:41aww
40:42she'll give me just enough time to give the kids a quick DIY lesson
40:46do you want to help me paint rexy?
40:48yeah

41:20i will
41:21bye
41:22say bye mum
41:24i love you
41:26i've got just the job for zack in the kids bedroom
41:29but first
41:30lesson one of work experience
41:32just go and see dilly rob ewan
41:34see if there's anything they need
41:35maybe make them a cup of tea
41:36because you make the best teas
41:37yeah of course
41:38and with half the day down the boys are cracking on while dilly gets organizing
41:43as with all bedding when we're trying to organize it what we want to make sure we do is a little pillow parcel
41:49now i'm just going to use the duvet cover and the pillowcase and i'm going to put it inside another pillowcase that matches that set so you can easily store everything so you know when you want to make this bed with this set the pillowcases and the duvet are all together beautifully organized
42:06hey
42:07there you go
42:08there you go
42:09there you go
42:10oh thanks zack
42:11it's alright
42:12it's just looking quite chaotic in here
42:13yeah welcome to sort your life out
42:15here you go mum
42:17oh i love you so much thank you you make the best too
42:20what are you doing
42:23two people that live here shirley and martin
42:25they've got grandkids now
42:26so i thought i'd decorate it with this stick
42:30and then some of their toy animals can be on top of it like a little safari
42:35do you want to help we drill the holes
42:38sure of course
42:39glue the animals on
42:40i love you
42:41okay
42:42now all we've got to do
42:43come on zack
42:44no
42:45push it
42:46do you think i'm trying to put it back
42:48we push it from this end
42:50i mean
42:51and then
42:52there you go
42:53perfect
42:54right here's the pot of animals
42:56yeah
42:57here's the glue gum
42:58we'll just go for like the most important animals
43:01what are the most important animals
43:03like lions tigers
43:05and bears
43:06what
43:07do you remember when you liked stuff like this
43:10what happened
43:11it was quite a long time ago
43:12it was a really long time ago
43:13but it feels like it just happened in a flash
43:16i'm gonna make one of these for rick's i think
43:18we could do a little dino one
43:20looks very nice
43:21oh you like it
43:22yeah
43:23thanks zacky
43:24done
43:26downstairs dilly has a tip for keeping the treats in check
43:30how do we control the amount of snacks that come in and out of the treat cupboard
43:35the easiest and quickest way
43:37is just give yourself one container
43:39that way it stops you over spending over buying
43:42and then when you know that this is too full you know you can't fit anymore
43:46so that is enough
43:47look at this
43:49while zack gets on with the painting in the family bedroom i've got a great idea for a cushion
43:54basically for the price of two pound for a ball of yarn i can make really nice upgrades to these pillows
44:01they're going to look all fancy and ruffly
44:03first of all i'm just marking out the lines where i'm going to put my ruffles
44:08i've got a lolly stick and i'm just going to wrap my yarn around loads and loads of times
44:13i know if dilly could see me right now she'd moan and say we haven't got time but
44:20there's always time for crafts
44:22now that my whole lolly stick is covered
44:24i'm just going to put a line of glue
44:26all the way down one end
44:28i don't know what i'd do without my glue gun you know
44:31and i'll stick my lolly stick
44:34on the lines that i've drawn out
44:36let the glue dry for a minute
44:38all right i think that's dry enough
44:40you know like when people pull a tablecloth off a table
44:43that's what you've got to do with a lolly stick
44:45whoop pull it out and everything remains intact
44:48she says
44:51oh it's happening
44:54here it comes
44:56da da
44:57go through the loop with one side of the scissors
45:01and cut
45:03the top
45:04of the yarn
45:06it's going to be good
45:08trust the process
45:11ta da
45:12it's my first little piece of ruffle
45:15i've got a four pound bunch of roses here that i got from the supermarket
45:19and i'm going to make them look like the posh ones you get from the florist
45:23i'm taking off all the leaves
45:24and i'm also going to take off the outer petals
45:27and just give it a little spin
45:29and they start to open up
45:31look at that

49:15i thought this day was never happened
49:17it's here
49:18it's so lovely to see that

49:28i was eating my words because i thought they were going to really struggle and you just went for it
49:32you were incredible and you should be really proud of yourselves
49:34what that also meant was that there was a big old pressure on us
49:39to put our money where our mouth is

50:31all of your family was everywhere in this house and that's what made it martin and shirley's house
50:36and we've got the table there
50:38the most important thing when we first started was giving the whole room zones and a real purpose
50:44yeah
