00:01Good morning.
00:02Welcome to your latest weather update from the Met Office.
00:04Storm Flores has arrived, bringing unseasonably strong winds to the northern half of the country.
00:09It's been picked up by this very active jet stream when it's undergone rapid deepening
00:14last night and into the early hours of this morning.
00:15And it's on that southern flank of the low, you see that really tight squeeze in the isobars
00:19indicating the location of those strongest winds throughout much of today.
00:24It eventually pushes its way north and eastwards into parts of Scandinavia, with an area of
00:28high pressure developing out towards the west, but tightly packed isobars throughout much
00:31of Tuesday indicate that it is still going to be quite a windy day, though not quite as
00:35windy as Monday.
00:38So let's take a closer look at those wind speeds in greater detail.
00:41Across western parts of Scotland is where we'll see the first peak in those winds, gusts here
00:45of 80, 85, potentially 90 miles an hour.
00:48And even across parts of Northern Ireland, northern parts of England and the rest of Scotland,
00:53we could see gusts up to 70 miles an hour at the coasts.
00:56That peak in wind speeds then transfers its way north-eastwards, so it's the north coast
01:00of Aberdeenshire that sees the second peak in those wind speeds, where we could once
01:03again see gusts of 80, 85, potentially 90 miles an hour as we go through Monday evening.
01:10As it is a bank holiday in Scotland, that could lead to some impacts, lots of people out and
01:14about on holiday, potentially camping in places too.
01:17And as it's the summer months, the trees are also in full leaf, so that could lead to some
01:20localised flooding due to blocked drains.
01:23Let's take a look at the rest of Monday though, and it's been a very wet start across much
01:28of Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland this morning.
01:31Outbreaks of heavy rain continue to push their way eastwards, with another weather front continuing
01:35to sink its way south-east across much of the country.
01:38But it's across western parts of Scotland that we really see those winds intensifying
01:42this morning.
01:43As mentioned, we could see gusts up to 90 miles an hour in places, potentially up to 80 millimetres
01:48of rain as well by the end of Monday across western parts of Scotland.
01:52So perhaps some spray on the roads here if you are travelling.
01:56As we then go through the rest of Monday afternoon, that weather front continues to sink its way
02:00south and eastwards.
02:01So we will see some brightness developing across parts of Wales, northern England, parts of
02:05Northern Ireland too.
02:06But heavy rain continues across northern parts of Scotland.
02:09Some blustery showers, perhaps even the odd rumble of thunder mixed in here too.
02:14With those very strong north-westerly winds across much of the country, even across the
02:17south, it will be feeling really quite windy.
02:19But it will be feeling quite mild here too, quite muggy across the very far south-east
02:23if you're stuck underneath that cloud and rain.
02:25But further north, temperatures close to average and feeling really quite unpleasant with those
02:30very strong west-northwesterly winds.
02:33As we then go through the rest of Monday evening, any rain that we see across the very far south-east
02:38quickly pushes its way offshore, leaving some late sunshine across much of England and Wales
02:42to end on Monday.
02:44But further north, plenty of heavy, blustery showers.
02:46Still some longer spells of rain across the very far north of Scotland too.
02:50But those winds gradually starting to ease as we go into the early hours of Tuesday morning,
02:53although it will still be a very windy start to the day.
02:56And with that brust north-westerly wind, plenty of showers feeding in too.
03:01With north-westerly winds across the whole of the country though, that does mean quite a
03:04bit of a fresher night on Monday night and into the start of Tuesday.
03:07Townsend City is generally holding up in the double figures, but some rural spots could be
03:11dropping a little bit lower.
03:12So a bit of a fresher start compared to Monday.
03:16A bright start too across much of England and Wales on Tuesday morning.
03:20The best of any prolonged sunshine likely here.
03:22But across the north and the west, we'll continue to see heavy, blustery showers feeding in
03:27on that very brisk north-westerly wind across much of Northern Ireland, Northern England and
03:32much of Scotland too.
03:33And once again, they could be heavy with some hail and thunder mixed in with those showers.
03:38With those north-westerly winds continuing across the country, that does mean a bit of a fresher
03:42day to come compared to Monday, particularly in terms of the value of the temperatures.
03:46Temperatures are generally close to average, but it will still feel pleasantly warm in the
03:49south with highs of 22 or 23 degrees.
