02:47happy Friday let's have a look at what we've got today to discuss we've got lots of deliveries
03:01happening today be mindful that they have right away to you and that leads me on to cutting of
03:08cement sheet products and tiles which is happening today let's make sure that tilers are using PPE
03:15other than that be nice to each other and we'll see you on Saturday yeah so today my plan is to get
03:39all the tiling finished and and start fitting off we're making progress we've got the floor down so
03:47it's exciting hopefully have the walls on today and once the tiles are grouted and dry we might
03:56be able to do a bit of fit off but that's ambitious I think so let's see how we go
04:00four tiles got in last night so they were able to set overnight and we can throw a ladder in there now
04:20so the plaster is up in the skyline doing the sand those bathroom reno is not much like anything else
04:28we've done before tight timeframe and yeah the added complexities have been on the block
04:34writing is a big day we have to finish our tiling we have to do the grout plumber's electrical plumber's
04:52electrical taps fittings if we have time and the plasterers are going to be working here on the
04:58ceiling so are you on track yes in three capital as we are definitely on track at the moment
05:07morning how are we Dan good how do we go here well yesterday there was an issue with that
05:24waterproofing and it's just frustrating if that doesn't improve that it's gonna have to be cut out
05:30and redone disaster there was two corners of our waterproof that were spongy and they need to dry
05:38more yeah that's dry yes that is dry the waterproofs all ticked off happy days great work let's go chuck a
05:47tile on happy days let's go thanks Dan today we need to get tiles on the walls and the floors because
05:55Graphico's coming they want to do their wall the tiles need to go on I'm gonna go up the wall I hope
06:01to be told by the end of the day doing good feeling better at this stage but there might be if your
06:08curveballs come and say can never be never be fully relaxed after also hitting a waterproofing snag
06:21house for Sonny and Alicia are the last house waiting for that all-important tick of approval
06:27right it's a little bit spongy here so they managed to told to mostly to the door and leave the tile
06:33out that was the problem with the waterproofing so first thing is we get to pre-start and I asked to
06:38get that inspected so that we can get that last tile in and we can start throwing tiles on the wall
06:43sunny yeah it's nice and dry now mate yeah right yeah yeah beautiful thank you yeah so Dan's finally
06:54given us a tick of approval with the book waterproofing past four so now we can really charge on good

07:54you're opening on Monday morning yes bright and early exciting this year we're working really
08:02closely with freedom furniture and you've got lots of new artists this year we do but we also sell
08:10knickknacks flowers plants have they been coming up to the window yes they have and I'm hoping that
08:19they'll be very good customers and I've already got a sense from seeing them around site that they
08:24they're going to do great things let's find out teams are well into their main bathrooms which are
08:30located in the west wing of the house Shelley and I are about to kick off the first walk around of the
08:35season so shell Emma and Ben they have done seven bathrooms in their previous life we've definitely
08:42been training for the block for the last what seven years yeah our very first home we purchased
08:48was a tiny little shack yeah it came up real nice budget right now our first one yeah and then we
08:55subdivided that house built a brand new house on the back half of the block it was perfect we were
09:02living in the front house and building the one out the back it was great to see our vision come to
09:11life yeah thank you this is my first house for the year oh very exciting this is house why I love
09:20it already it's good usually walking into our bathroom there's bananas is this real life yeah it
09:28was cool okay seven years in the waiting yeah that's right here it is your first walk around it is
09:34very exciting you got some tiles on there that's good been more progressed since last time you're here
09:39it's good nice look at this roof line okay what I love about this series there's so many things I'm
09:44going to love about this series the fact that you all have the same floor plan it really comes down
09:48to your creativity in each and every room yeah our duo Emma and Ben are expressing their creativity with
09:55a bold green feature tile a double vanity sculptured nib wall to frame their shower screen and they have
10:02opened up their roof for a skylight that floods the room with natural light so how is your budget
10:08oh we're close yes the the prize from combank is not about whether you're under or over it's about
10:15how you manage it this year combank is giving away 10 grand each week to the team who best nails their
10:22budget add in a room win and that's 20 grand then imagine three tens from the judges and one savvy team
10:29could pocket fifty thousand dollars in one week and this week's suggested room budget for the
10:35bathroom is 20 grand it's about paying your trades on time right it's about knowing how much you've
10:42spent right and not wasting money okay obviously if you get 10 grand over then you're not going to
10:47win the prize yeah of course okay okay well I've got a good looking spreadsheet if you want to have

11:48she's she's into it everything has to be perfect and something goes wrong she gets very upset type a
11:54personality it's the Manic Panic duo just make sure that's on the line I like to achieve a lot in and
12:00sometimes I like set myself like a lot of tasks in a day and I have a list I'm like very fast-paced I

12:54have you a couple Han and can are definitely getting their hands dirty this week by wrapping
13:01their entire bathroom in floor-to-ceiling tiles showcasing a mosaic finger-tiled curved wall yeah it's quite box
13:09box modular and quite harsh from the exterior so we wanted you to come in and feel like it's a bit
13:14of a wellness sanctuary but curated vibe so like yeah we're having the beautiful arched door which
13:20is going to be a secret door that you push on and come in to come into this bathroom and then we've got
13:25the gorgeous kind of just skylight it's some hard work up there and then in the corner we've got a
13:31scoot curved wall in the shower and you've just sorry to interrupt you but are you tiling to the
13:38ceiling we are floor to ceiling all right you know it's Friday we know it's Friday we do have a lot of
13:46tiling to get done today but look as long as we get the walls done today we can start fitting in most of
13:52our bathroom appliances how much have you spent how much have we spent Scotty I'm glad you asked we have so
13:58far out of pocket eleven thousand seven hundred and eighty eight so we've got eight thousand remaining
14:04in the kitty cash yes cash have you included the tiler in that yes we have okay get tiling thank you
14:11we will thank you lots to do are you worried about finishing I have full confidence in my team I am not
14:18worried and that's way behind yeah way behind yeah and if they're doing that feature tile around that's
14:24going to take some effort they've got one tiler like I know house four or five we've got four
14:29tiles yeah right and they're going floor to ceiling it's going to be a tough going to finish yeah

14:52Sonny and I met 14 years ago we've been married 10 years now we get along pretty well we're sort of
15:01you know I think we're lucky compared to a lot of married couples I think that bicker we we you should
15:09have also said hey leash when you fling the door open I can be called all the names under the Sun that
15:14doesn't faze me I know she's a firecracker it's funny to watch like it's the melt is quite enjoyable from
15:21sidelines sometimes so how you're settling in we're going good sir well we're having a few blues
15:29just amongst themselves yeah it's nothing yeah we're used to fighting yeah arguing arguing bickering
15:39our fiery Gold Coast couple are creating a moody look with warm chocolate floor-to-ceiling tiles in

19:02this is looking very country are you stopping the tiles there I got Graphico going there
19:08oh what sort of Graphico it's like a almost looks like a bit of Venetian plaster concretey
19:14texture and it's gonna be warm to complement the tones that are nice yeah these tiles are beautiful
19:19yeah I love this I think Shelley loved it like we've been watching Shelley for years so we can
19:26sort of say issues like oh I love the tiles oh the colors are nice so I think she actually genuinely
19:31liked it you can usually tell when shell doesn't like it she'll give you a lot of arms or she'll be
19:35very quiet or yeah she'll be like oh I'm not sure about that I think she liked it yeah what do you
19:42think's been your biggest challenge so far I think just learning everything just not knowing what a
19:47vanilla board compared to a vanilla board I've got I've got a present for you what have we got you
19:53know everyone's been making fun of you yes everyone has been making well they shouldn't because it

22:27slimline bath to open up the shower space with gunmetal tapware that pops against the neutral palette
22:33a spectacular ceiling void that draws your eye up to the skylight fantastic I love your muted palette
22:40this I think is a is a master stroke mm-hmm you're going really well boys for a couple of hairdressers
22:47yeah I doubted you we heard it in your tone so we took that on board so we're just you know we're
22:55working extra hard we're two hairdressers designing a bathroom it's been a tough week and you know with
23:02we're Friday afternoon and we've got some good positive pat on the bum oh good boy uh shell
23:09these guys have got a secret weapon we have to whisper already yes it's and it's a it's a corker
23:15right they're gonna pardon the pun yes it's they're gonna build a wine cellar out there underneath the
23:24ground dig it in and build it and then put a lid on it with stairs going down proudly so I hope we're not
23:29digging ourselves a hole but we want to dig ourselves a hole and boys I have the approval
23:35is this close so that we don't we're waiting on a call yeah right so we haven't got that call yet so
23:40obviously great idea love the secret weapon where is the budget come from well hopefully we're going
23:44to pull the budget out of this and a bit of uh out of this it's a risk this is the jeopardy because because
23:52you've got to start they've got to start now to do it and therefore but they haven't got extra money
23:56at the moment so if they pull the lever on this that means they definitely have to win 50 grand
24:02if we get approved this wine cellar we could win the block mate like it's a game changer so
24:10seemingly it's the easiest block you've ever given them but when you think about actually having to
24:16landscape all of this yes they've got to start now to help them get started Julie and I went shopping
24:23earlier today we're going to give these pots away starting today right and it's based on effort love
24:30it yes because by the end of the competition obviously they've got no budget landscaping
24:35week usually comes last they're running really low so they can actually stockpile their plants
24:39throughout the series yes I like that while doing our walk arounds I cooked up a quick quiz
24:45to help me pick this week's pot plant winner one word answer or quick answer is what I'm after
24:50who is the hardest worker here on the block probably Han Han good answer Han I'd say Han Han
25:04everybody has said Han yeah including Han herself who is the hardest working person here on the block
25:13I'd say Han with a unanimous decision and has earned the title of this week's hardest worker and her
25:21reward five plants of her choice let's have a look around but there's a height limit our human measuring
25:28stick showing on that thank you I'm the highest worker for the week absolutely stoked it means we get plants pot plants one two three four you got one to go plans aren't cheap and we've got a lot of ground to cover all right thank you very much thank you for shopping

27:50but beyond the styling and the sweat it's easy to forget that the block at its core
27:55is a real estate competition and on day one marty fox reminded our blockheads what that means
28:02i urge you guys don't do what contestants did last year and they left it for weeks
28:06to speak to real estate agents you need to do that as quickly as possible you need to understand
28:12exactly what will resonate it's going to set you apart with that in mind han and can locked in an
28:17agent on their first day natalie lovely to meet you i'm actually nice to meet you nice to meet you

28:25and it wasn't long for others to follow suit we got big and scott i do not have a real estate

29:10winning words of wisdom we obviously had a great experience with our agents who were ray white
29:14sunbury we really benefited from doing having someone that had done the block before and understood
29:20the game yeah i don't think you can underestimate how important that would be have a few chats
29:26and robbie and matt went purely off good vibes we were looking for real estate agents and during
29:31the parade and we went around the corner and then there's kim mcqueen the queen of the queen of
29:36daylesford she's in there and she's waving at us and we're like that is our lady with their real
29:50estate agent locked in and council approval for their secret wine cellar robbie and matt have hit the
29:56road we're driving around to get a few little knick-knacks for styling and we decide to call kim
30:02kim speaking if it isn't kim mcqueen the queen of a real estate agent and what does she say you won't
30:11believe it i am selling a house that has an underground wine cellar oh kimmy please why don't you come and
30:21have a look at it oh hi there she is hi it's hugely important that we explore dalesford in the area to
30:28get some inspo like we're picking up a lot every drive every time we look out into a property we're
30:34picking up little one percenters here and there this is great yeah it's fantastic isn't it it's beautiful house
30:43the whole house is built of shipping containers
30:46there's an underground shipping container cellar come and have a look let's have a look
30:51after you wow as soon as i saw it our ideas just started flowing oh feel this yeah this is exactly
31:12the size i'm thinking even this with the rusted steel work yeah i love that so we are so lucky like
31:19rod came up with this idea because every house is exactly the same so they're comparing everything
31:24to the most minute detail but this idea will set us apart completely from the rest of it it's about
31:31finding that point of difference isn't it absolutely and dales have been a very cool climate
31:35town tourist town everybody loves their wine they're looking for luxury they're looking for um experiences
31:42within the home it's a great idea and i think it will be the uh the winning the winning house i thought it
31:48was going to be really steep i did too actually but it wasn't and i like the idea of it not being
31:51steep because of the elderly can get down there like yourself oh so rude but even the ceiling was
31:58you know quite high and you know for someone that you know is medium height like yourself you know he
32:03had heaps of room i'm standing on the slope now let's go all right quick i'm just going to take this
32:09i'm going to take this rob quick grab something let's go
32:21everything on friday afternoon it's going great it's going great we were in such a good spot probably
32:26up here it's about halfway up that time we can sort of we're happy then aiden walks in
32:32ado grim reaper at this point walks in to tell us very very bad news
32:44tiles put the last tile on the wall and uh aiden's come in and said yeah we've got a problem
32:51what's the drama the mastic d2 mastic it just can't be used where membrane is
33:01mastic d2 is a pre-mixed tile glue that the nine and six boys don't like contestants to use on the block
33:08as it takes seven days for it to fully dry too slow for the block and it's trapped moisture can dislodge
33:15this glue is not compliant the only reason we know this is because i've walked in before and
33:23we've pulled tiles off the wall oh mate i've seen it have i've got it happens all the time i know that
33:27and i've got to fix those jobs i know what you're saying but that's because they've used a product
33:31that literally tells you not to use it on the last time i stopped someone using it it was d2
33:37yeah oh you stopped them using it yeah okay no they'd already used it the day before yeah right and
33:42we said you can't use that it was d2 right right and we went and popped tiles off the wall right
33:47okay but that i know what you're saying but i've never had it failed our tyler who's been in the
33:53job for 20 years has said this product is and can be used in waterproof areas as listed on a bit of
34:03paper that he had it says here in the case of d2 the product information does permit bonding on
34:08membranes provided the tiles are porous that's what it says right here yeah so so so why are you saying
34:14that i can't well but it says on the d2 instructions it also says it's a problem so my tile has got a
34:19bit of paper aiden's got a bit of paper both say contradicting things so you're saying that i have
34:27to pop these tiles off the wall yeah but i'm saying i don't because they're not saying that i do it says
34:32it might work on wholly porous tiles yeah right a porous tile such as ceramic has tiny holes like a
34:39sponge that can absorb the glue make it stick fast but a non-porous tile like a porcelain glazed tile
34:47stops the glue from absorbing and that's not good what are they just a ceramic yeah yeah yeah yeah
34:55sweet thank you they're porcelain what's that they're porcelain they're porcelain glaze yeah yeah
35:06but they're porcelain so they're not porous i can't knock my tilers for the work that they put in
35:12they've used this product forever but it's not compatible for what nine and six point porcelain is
35:19not highly porous the argument that they're highly porous so it might work is not going to happen
35:25because they're porcelain it's not the right unfortunately on this job site nine and six
35:33are the boss where do we go from here i guess is the what taz needs to know
35:40first out popping tiles off the wall take all the tiles off yeah it's on the membrane yeah
35:49aiden's made the call that every tile on the wall has come off every tile on a friday night
36:01all the tilers himself just sat in a bathroom fully tiled ready for grout
36:10just dead silence
36:10put in the hard work you see all your beautiful work off on the walls
36:25and they say you've got to tear it down
36:30that was tough
36:40with only 40 hours to go until room reveal house three faces a nightmare

38:21because normally you would tile it and you would leave it for a few days and the glue would go off
38:26we're tiling we want to dry out straight away and it gets nowhere and it will just stay sloppy
38:31forever if the tiles are poorer ceramic house four are good if they're porcelain they're in trouble

43:19back of the wall which also means the tiles will not line up the other option is to replace the finger

43:31concept you can snip the mesh can't you yeah yeah what happens if you snip the mesh and just do it

46:43luckily for the boys they've used a ceramic tile which can extract the moisture and stick fast but
46:49for the moisture to extract it needs to have airflow so the grout needs to be removed for the glue to dry
46:56i know but it might not be that bad we get back and we find out that has hit the fan and one of our
47:05sections in our bathroom just said that we have to scratch just from here to well this whole wall
47:13okay and that and then that wall and that one just a little bit there and then here but we just had to
47:17get some air to the glue so we just had to scrape out a little bit of the grout um maybe extra two hours
47:23work but compared to everyone else we got away with murder that's a lot better than it ran out
47:29everyone's ripped their bathrooms apart oh has that happened is that real
47:41we were getting kicked off site at 10 pm we could have stopped at six o'clock and just said let's just
47:46give it a day let's everyone call off but that's not how we operate
47:53we can go home and not deliver a bathroom or we can just roll up our sleeves and get stuck in
48:03brit himself all the tilers started ripping tiles off the wall
48:12it's going to be scraped for the master golf right okay
48:18we scraped those tiles and we're able to start putting some back on the wall
48:23it was a rough day just means we're going to have to work very very hard tomorrow
