00:00The garden rescue team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true Charlie
00:11Dimock Lee Burkill Flo Headlum and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies feels disorganized a bit chaotic it's a bit of a shocker each week two of our designers
00:34will go head-to-head pick me and let them do this the garden we're gonna go with is and whichever
00:47designer loses the race is on helps the winner build the garden good idea did you get that on
00:53camera they said good idea Charlie amazing turning garden dreams open your eyes well into reality
01:03today the team are taking on a garden that's seen better days in Luton I'm Lewis I'm Dorian and this
01:22is Nyla we've lived in this house for about eight months family started to expand or continued to
01:29expand and we just felt we needed more space very much a dream home very much a forever home for us
01:35it's got a lot of things that we can do to it and the garden is huge lots of space for the kids this
01:41is our garden at the moment bits are quite overgrown it's a little bit wild before they moved in Lois
01:49in Dorian's garden had been left unkempt for years it feels quite disorganized a bit chaotic and not
01:57functional they have a half acre plot made of separate areas including a now overgrown formal
02:04lawn and an allotment space with an old greenhouse and established trees the garden no longer reflects
02:11its famous past life it was celebrated on gardeners world along with previous owner Dana Johnson it's
02:19thirsty and hungry like my family this garden has a huge kind of history the previous owner Dana had
02:28won southeast gardener of the year we've seen videos and we've seen pictures of it in its heyday and it
02:32was absolutely meticulous like the grass looked like carpet everything was just picture perfect so it's a
02:39real puzzle and I don't really know where to start with it so I find it daunting I wouldn't call it
02:44daunting I think it's inspirational I think just recognizing what it was so these are our three
02:53apple trees which look like about five or six because they're so massively overgrown and they've
02:58grown up they've grown out they've grown down they're not on this side so these used to be like a lot
03:06there's a lot of fruit and vegetable growing here but as you can see everything's just massively overgrown at the moment
03:11there's these metal bits that are kind of really sharp and sticking out and they're really like unsafe so I worry about the
03:18kids kind of coming into this area and playing
03:21it's going through to the next section
03:27so this is our greenhouse and we've repaired the glass but we're still not using it it's still
03:35not perfectly functional the gutters a bit broken and inside as you can see there's not much there
03:41there's Lois and Dorian and their little kiddies so that's the garden whoa it's quite big actually
03:57isn't it yeah it's got a lovely layout to it I can't believe it was featured on gardeners world in the 80s I was still at school then I wasn't even born I am going off you it's not gardeners world ready now is it
04:09I mean it's been a long time since it's been touched and I think it could look beautiful so there's some lovely fruit trees
04:16yeah there are some nice trees but look at the rest of it the fence is falling down the greenhouse is smashed I mean it needs a lot of love
04:23a lot of TLC I have to say
04:26right let's see what Lois and Dorian want then yeah let's find out
04:31so what we'd love from this garden is to restore it to its former glory and just honor what was once here
04:38I'm so pleased that they don't want modern clean cut because I was thinking what do you do with that space
04:44yeah there's a lot going on in that garden and a lot of existing trees to work with so that would be difficult
04:48yeah but make it eco-friendly and child-friendly family friendly as well
04:52I think it's really important to try and get the sort of allotment area to show the kids you know where food comes from
05:00oh well that's nice all veg and fruit I think it's important that you know the kids learn about ecosystem
05:07and so that the plants attract pollinators to help pollinate the plants and make the fruits grow
05:14exactly and what I really love is that it's all about teaching the kids where their food comes from
05:18yeah fantastic one other thing that I would really love in this space is a place to relax
05:23something that also fits with the wider garden so what's the budget
05:28I'm not going to like this Charlie it's really tight it's only 4k
05:32£4,000 it's a big garden and there's a lot to do
05:36I think it's all about focusing those pennies in the right areas so we can deliver the food to teach the kids where it's come from
05:42a nice seating area and then work with that existing garden
05:45to get the most for their £4,000 budget Charlie and Chris will be focusing their design on the old allotment area in Dorian and Lois's garden
06:02the couple must pick the one they prefer and the losing designer must help the winner build it
06:08along with an expert team of landscapers who provide their labour for free
06:14which leaves the full budget for materials
06:20back in Luton Lois and Dorian have received the designers pitches
06:27what a fantastic garden you've got I can see why you want to renovate it
06:36faded glory but I want to rejuvenate it and give you a space that's great for the family
06:42great for wildlife and also produces lots of yummy things
06:47I like the sound of that
06:48me too
06:50we want to restore this garden to its former glory
06:53but you're also a family you have young children and you need a space where you can all come together
06:59yes
07:00I want to do this patio area here as well to pick up some of the paving and mix it up with some reclaimed slabs
07:09and maybe some bricks and some stone and then we've got this simple pergola that runs up and over the paving
07:16that frames a view down the garden for growing climbers got grapevine where you can use the leaves you can use the fruit
07:25that's a good idea
07:27Charlie's design encloses the family with a pergola climbing plants and patio in the centre of the new allotment space
07:35whilst Chris has created a different central point
07:39now this is going to be the main family social space
07:42and I'm going to do that by reclaiming what was a former bed
07:46but it's now going to become paving with gravel around the edges
07:49and these beautiful round posts with rope swags hanging between them which will be great for climbers
07:54really nice idea
07:55yeah never seen that before
07:57this is where we go from the social zone into the more productive zone
08:01this part here I think is going to be really fun for the kids
08:05I wanted to give them their very own raised beds
08:07but I wanted to make them a vertical growing archway
08:11where they can have beans and gourds and squashes growing up over this
08:15and what's great about it is that you can actually walk around them
08:19but you can also walk underneath it and see the plants growing overhead
08:22I think it's a really cool design idea
08:24well the kids would love to see that
08:26and I wanted to create an area that's a bit magical for the children
08:31so we got this raised bed here sleeper high
08:34and we're going to mound the soil up
08:37and create these two seating areas with these sections of tree trunks as a pathway through
08:44oh that's quite interesting
08:45yeah I think the kids will love like jumping and leaping on those logs
08:49we're going to have a seat made from recycled materials
08:54bug hotel
08:56and then we've got meadow
08:59so when you're sat on the bench you'll be surrounded by all these meadow plants and flowers
09:04but also a great space for your children to plant some bulbs and get involved with gardening
09:11that will be very cool
09:13making their new patch a perfect place for the children is important to Lois and Dorian
09:18as is bringing the old greenhouse back to life
09:23further down to the end of the garden
09:25I know it was really important for you to get that greenhouse back up and running
09:29what I'd like to do is get you some new things in there
09:32so you can actually start growing again
09:34get you growing vertically as well
09:36but I've got a few sneaky ideas for that so leave it with me
09:39I wonder what that's going to be
09:41and what I want to do is revamp that greenhouse
09:45a great space for growing things bringing on seedlings
09:49and also for growing things that might need a little bit more heat and protection
09:54at the beginning of the year
09:56so if you want to grow sweet potatoes and chilli plants and tomatoes
10:00then they'll need that protection to get them going
10:03that would be great
10:04that would be great
10:05definitely
10:06I think this is going to be a huge transformation for this space
10:09and I think it's going to be something you'll really enjoy together as a family
10:12I'd love to see this one built
10:14wow
10:16lots of things to think about
10:18definitely
10:19yeah really cool design
10:20not what I could have imagined or pictured at all
10:22so I'm hoping you like my design
10:24there's a little bit of everything for everyone
10:27lots of recycling
10:29lots of fruit and veg
10:31but also a nice place to explore and sit out as a family
10:36wow that's amazing
10:38that's quite a good one
10:39they're so different
10:40yeah it's going to be tough to choose between them
10:43Dorian, Lois and Nyla must now decide on their favourite design
10:52so I really love both of the designs actually
10:54yeah they're both really nice
10:55but I'll start with Charlie's design
10:57I mean what I really love is just the different heights
11:00and how she's played with the landscape
11:02yeah I like the idea of you know
11:04the kid zone
11:05the mixed space, the kid zone
11:07I love the bug hotel
11:08I think the kids will really enjoy that
11:09Chris's design is really great
11:11I love the nice open social space area that he's put in there
11:15and the vertical growing area
11:17just outside the greenhouse
11:19I really like this plateau area
11:20so Nyla
11:21can you see all the trees?
11:22wow
11:23what do you like here?
11:24do you like all the trees?
11:25I don't know
11:28they're just both so different
11:29yeah they both smashed the brief
11:30yeah
11:37right
11:38Lois and Dorian have come back to us
11:40with a result
11:41shall we see who's won it then?
11:42go on
11:44hi Chris
11:45hi Charlie
11:46first of all thank you both so much for such a great design
11:49I'll start with Chris's design
11:51you know I really loved your ideas about the social space
11:54and how you'd make that sort of work for our family
11:56and Charlie what we loved about your design was this idea of using reclaimed materials to add texture and variation to the flooring
12:02well we had to use reclaimed materials to make the budget go further
12:08we liked a bit of that
12:09yeah
12:10we had a really difficult decision
12:11both designs were absolutely fantastic and they really considered kind of both of what we wanted of needs as a family
12:17but on balance we decided to go with
12:19ooh
12:20who is it?
12:21who is it?
12:22Charlie
12:26oh
12:27yes
12:28we really like the openness and the flow and that we can kind of just walk through and navigate really easily through the garden
12:33so overall we were really really happy with this design
12:36Chris
12:37oh my
12:38there we go Charlie
12:39I think we've got a bit of a challenge on here
12:41yeah
12:42I definitely need your help because it's going to be a slog
12:46yeah
12:51with just two days to rescue the forgotten allotment part of Lois and Dorian's garden
12:56project manager Ben and an elite team of landscapers are en route to Luton
13:02we have a bit of a wilderness here
13:08we've got to strip it all back and we've got to create this garden for Lois and Dorian
13:13first thing we need to do
13:15let's get the digger in
13:17hopefully it goes through the archway
13:18we're going to strip back from the greenhouse
13:21work backwards
13:22get everything in the skip
13:23and then we start putting Charlie's plan to action
13:27so let's crack on with it yeah?
13:29let's get it done
13:30using a micro digger ideal for tight access
13:35bottom track
13:37bottom track
13:38right
13:39come around
13:40how excited
13:42how excited
13:43Andy's first job is to clear a weed ridden top layer of turf in the old allotment area
13:49so Andy's now starting to clear the area
13:52we're trying to keep as much as we can
13:54so we can reuse it and still keep it in the garden
13:57the soil once we sit through it it will be reused as a soil is beautiful
14:04the team is striving to recycle as much as they can
14:10these paths running through the gardens are all
14:17these paths running through the gardens are all coming up
14:21and I've pulled them up and it's beautiful old gritstone
14:25quite a soft rock, quite a porous rock
14:28you can cut it well, you can carve it well
14:31and it looks beautiful
14:34so definitely use those
14:36Charlie's design for this space puts reclaimed materials front and centre
14:41from buried paving to disregarded wood
14:45you've got some lovely stuff here Ben, where you had all this from?
14:48beautiful, yeah
14:50locally to me, I have a saw mills
14:52you get all these beautiful offcuts
14:54they can't sell them
14:55but they're perfect for Charlie's garden
14:57here
14:58and it comes with its own wildlife
14:59it does, yeah
15:00Bug Hotel fitted already
15:02here we go
15:03last one
15:05amazing, thank you
15:06the offcuts will be used to encourage wildlife to areas of the garden
15:11while Lee's got more woodwork to create
15:14in the form of framing for a raised patio close to the garden entrance
15:22Lee's cutting the sleepers so we create the right angles
15:25we have Andy putting the membrane down
15:27so we can create the base ready for the paving to go in
15:31once the sleepers are placed and fixed
15:34the team put a membrane in and whack the gravel ready for a new patio
15:41look at these Lee
15:43you had to the floor all right, didn't you?
15:47it's terrible mate, it's just easy
15:49amazing
15:50Lee focuses on the woodwork for the raised beds
15:53that'll be positioned in front of the greenhouse
15:56how are you getting off?
15:57well, it's coming together now
15:58last one of the ones for down the bottom of the garden
16:01so we'll get these in
16:02then we can concentrate on this
16:05framework that we've got to build over
16:06the arch, yeah
16:07we're nearly ready for you in there if that's okay
16:09yeah, yeah, ten minutes mate and I'll be done
16:11before the framework can be placed
16:13the patio needs putting down
16:15so if you're paving up to timber
16:26never pave right up to it so it's touching
16:29because timber can swell in the winter
16:32shrink in the summer
16:33so it will move your slabs
16:35so leave a ten mil gap
16:38and it allows it to move
16:44using a mix of stones to create texture in this family space
16:48a pergola will sit across the paving to house climbers and planting
16:55right, so this is the beginning of the archway we're putting in
16:58so I'll get this in place
17:00so at least I'm going to hold Andy up when he comes to start cutting round it
17:07bang on, eh?
17:10just going to screw it to the sleepers
17:15then I'll put some concrete in the hole and get it firmed in properly
17:20with the patio, pergola posts and raised beds ready
17:24today has been hot and hard work for the landscapers
17:28hopefully they'll have cooled down by the time Charlie and Chris arrive in the morning
17:38well Chris, this one's going to be a bit different for us
17:41I think it's going to be very different for us Charlie
17:44this garden really, really has grown
17:45yes, so we're going to be trying to just create a little oasis
17:50a little patio with all these mature plants round it
17:53a little space
17:55and then Lois and Dorian can slowly progress with the rest of the garden
17:59well it sounds lovely but sometimes all those mature plants
18:02you say that now
18:04there's a challenge, love
18:06challenge, love
18:10I said it was going to be a challenge
18:11wow, I mean this must have been an absolutely beautiful garden
18:16but the guys have done an amazing job
18:18from what it was it was so forgotten about wasn't it
18:21it was, yeah
18:23and I mean reusing all those materials which is great
18:26we love that
18:28lots of work to do so I'd love you to get on the pergola
18:31and I'm going to go and check out the wildlife zone
18:34and the veg
18:35ok, alright, I'll have a think about the pergola
18:38good luck
18:40now when you move into a new house
18:43and it's all overgrown
18:44people panic and think
18:46just get a digger in and rip everything out
18:48don't do that
18:50live with the garden for at least a year
18:53and ok maybe prune things back a bit
18:55and do a bit of weeding
18:57but you'll discover things in the garden
18:59some terrible things
19:01perennial weeds
19:02to get on top of that
19:04it's going to be digging out the weeds
19:06maybe put carpet over the top
19:08to suppress the weeds and leave it for a good year
19:10and it'll get rid of those perennial weeds
19:12but on the flip side
19:14you're going to discover wonderful things
19:16like these lovely mature apple trees
19:18we've got jasmine and a clematis
19:21and then we've got sicilian honey garlic here
19:24which is a bulb
19:26so if you've got a digger in just scraped all the soil off
19:28you don't know whether there's bulbs in there or not
19:30because they might not be in growth
19:33so live with the garden
19:35mark things and then also living with the garden
19:37you discover how you actually use the garden
19:40Charlie's design combines new ideas with old materials
19:44and mature plants
19:46Charlie's taking on the apple tree pruning
19:49so when you come to pruning things and cutting things back
19:52cut to a joint just above the joint
19:56and it cuts through nice and easily
19:57if you've got bits of wood that are thicker
20:01so this sort of thickness
20:03you would use loppers
20:05so that you can cut them off easily
20:08like that
20:10oh sorry
20:12no I'm alright
20:14below the newly pruned apple tree
20:19Andy's worked out a design to bring new life to the thick stones unearthed yesterday
20:26this is looking beautiful
20:28we're getting there aren't we
20:30and this is all from the path still
20:32these are all bits what I pulled out of this old path
20:34yeah
20:35beautiful
20:36this one next
20:37yeah
20:38I think if you paint them up
20:39I'll get some cement in
20:43Chris is helping Lee with a pergola roof
20:46designed to encourage climbers
20:49now Lee has made this beautiful chunky pergola for Charlie
20:53to go over the seating area
20:55and what I really like about it is because it's getting nestled into all this mature planting
20:59it looks like something that is meant to be there and it's been there for a long time
21:03but now we've got the challenge
21:05of lifting this beast up don't we
21:07yeah
21:09watch out here we go
21:11you ready?
21:13the long and chunky roof will also create dappled sunlight across the centre of the patio
21:18I actually can't see from here can you see that Lee?
21:24it's only just about bang on
21:32beautiful
21:34I can do me monkey bars on it
21:37will you tell me off?
21:38I'll tell you off
21:39I'll have a mad dad moment
21:41with the pergola roof in place there is more wood work that needs installing
21:48the team move on to the frames for raised beds
21:52that Charlie wants placed in front of Lois and Dorian's greenhouse
21:56ok and obviously we're going to want to level these up
21:59yeah level this one up
22:01now what I'm thinking now
22:02so if that's there
22:03so that's going to be the raised bed
22:05then we've got the path
22:06then we've got to get the other one in
22:08up there
22:09then we're going to have a screen across here
22:12to screen that
22:13grow runner beans up it or whatever
22:14lovely
22:15and then depending on height we could put a piece of timber across there and it would be a nice little
22:20bench
22:21it would be perfect
22:22it would be the right height
22:24Charlie's design keeps Lois and Dorian's children in mind
22:27with another seating area by the raised patio
22:30so Lee's back at his workbench ready to create two bespoke seats
22:37so what are you thinking then?
22:38I'm thinking
22:40making two
22:42little seats
22:43so cute
22:44using them like that
22:45different sizes
22:46cool and we could set them at different heights
22:48yeah because the kids are at different ages
22:49different heights
22:50yeah
22:51so a low one and a high one
22:52yeah
23:00Lee is crafting square seats from reclaimed offcuts
23:04using long timber planks as backrests
23:06Charlie's unique seating area will create an inspiring space for Lois and Dorian's three children
23:19now this is my turn to get a little bit artistic
23:23I'm going to use these gorgeous bits of gnarly logs
23:27to act as a collar around some plants
23:30and it will just stop the meadow turf from swamping the plants
23:35and it just looks arty
23:36and of course it's great for bugs and things
23:39because you've got this old rotten wood in the centre
23:45these wood offcuts create a rustic path
23:52does that look sort of levelish Todd?
23:54good
24:00woo!
24:01that's posh
24:03that's lovely
24:05so that's the one
24:06that's the job
24:16now we're at quite a fun bit of this section of the garden
24:19it's time to get the slats on
24:21and the whole idea with these
24:22is that it's just going to screen the greenhouse behind
24:25because this is more of a working end of the garden
24:27whereas this is more about ornamentals of fun
24:30and a beautiful space for the family to enjoy
24:33and this is something that's really easy for anybody to replicate at home
24:37because all it is a couple of posts
24:40some nice plain rounded off pattern
24:43and then we're going to repeat them all the way up the posts
24:45and just use a little spacer as we go
24:47so this is something that anybody can do
24:48right come on then Menti let's start getting these in
24:52looking good looking good
25:05looking good
25:11so this area is coming together now
25:13so this is all about wildlife and insects
25:18so we're going to have meadow turf
25:20which is going to be great because you get lots of different butterflies
25:23and moths and things like that
25:25which will then also help with the pollination
25:28and bees the pollination of the veg
25:30but great for the children
25:32so seats over there
25:34I'm putting in this basically this big bucket
25:37which is going to be a big bird bath
25:39and then this is going to be a bird table
25:41so we found this bit of metal
25:44I think it's cast iron, it's very heavy
25:46but I want it so I get Lee to cut me a hole in there
25:49because I want it so that they can lift it off
25:51and scrub it down occasionally
25:53that way there's less chance of disease spreading between the birds
25:56right
25:59woohoo
26:09to bring the screen and raised bed area together in the growing space
26:14Chris needs to create a bench seat
26:16so I'm just measuring up and cutting two short bits of sleeper
26:21that I'm going to use to form the bench that goes just under the screen I've just built
26:24and this again is really simple construction to be honest
26:29but it's going to give you a really solid chunky bench that's going to last a long time
26:34so I'll get these cut and I'll get them in
26:36Chris can install them in the growing space that sold Charlie's design to Lois and Dorian
26:44for me the thing I'm looking forward to the most is just growing fresh produce
26:49and being able to not have to buy certain things from the supermarket and actually peel it wash it cook it
26:55and yeah I'm looking forward to that a lot
26:57I'm really looking forward to the section for the kids they can enjoy it and you know have their own little growing space
27:05Right I'm going to create a bug hotel underneath the seat
27:12that's ideal because the top of the seat keeps the hotel dry and what you're trying to do is create little gaps and areas for insects to overwinter lay eggs so that they're insulated and protected from birds from eating them and you can use all sorts of materials so I've got some bits of wood these are shingles so you can just use all sorts of materials and you can use all sorts of materials so I've got some bits of wood these are shingles
27:23so you can just stack those I've got some coir so I'm going to cut that up into strips and put between so you're just creating layers you can slice up canes into all sorts
27:44You ever wander around the garden like a teddy bear?
28:06Do you like a teddy bear?
28:13Chris is laying meadow turf to encourage more insects and wildlife into the garden and Charlie plans to introduce colourful flowers as well as fruit and veg throughout
28:24Wow! I knew you knew where it was
28:27Look at that!
28:28Look at these marigolds!
28:31Companion planting for the vegetables!
28:34Exactly!
28:35I mean I know it's a veggie garden but you have taken this to the next level!
28:39What have we got?
28:40Oh sweet!
28:41Oh sugar snap peas!
28:42Sugar snaps!
28:43We've got carrots!
28:44You know being a carrot top I've got to have carrots haven't I?
28:47This is a...
28:48Oh and then I thought I'd plant some strawberries in the wildlife area because the birds will like them but also the children will like eating them won't they?
28:57Yeah
28:58Yeah!
28:59Love this!
29:06In a not too daunting nod to the former glory of this garden Charlie wants to bring vegetables to two raised beds
29:13Now veg beds!
29:17So apart from sort of edible plants and that I've got fun plants for the children so we've got some pumpkins which of course they climb so they'll scrabble up over this trellis
29:27We've got some beans that are dark colour beans like almost black so we've got lots of different things that the kids will like to grow as well
29:37And that's just really a case of arranging them and don't forget there are some things like the chives
29:44Not only can you eat the leaves but you can eat the flowers as well and they taste of chives
29:50So that's a good one and we've got some nasturtiums
29:53You can eat the leaves, you can eat the flowers and you can eat the seeds
29:57And of course they're a really great plant for children to grow because they sell seed, they're a hardy annual and they'll come up year after year
30:05You've just got to look out for the very distinctive leaves so when you see the leaf come up like that you know it's nasturtium
30:15Tropiolum, tropiolum nasturtium?
30:18Tropiolum? I thought that was a place in Italy
30:20I thought the name comes from the shield that the gladiators used to hold because they were round weren't they?
30:27See, I knew I was on the right path with the Italy reference
30:30Yummy
30:32Peppery
30:33Peppery watercrest
30:41Chris meanwhile is planning the best way to introduce produce to the forgotten greenhouse
30:46That Lois and Dorian want brought back to life
30:51The greenhouse for me is where all the magic comes together because this is where you can experiment with your plants
30:58And start to grow stuff that might be a little bit more tender, a bit more unusual or even a bit risky
31:04Now the easy way to get started in a greenhouse
31:08Everybody knows about them is grow bags
31:11What's good about them is that you can just buy them from the shop, chuck them on the floor of the greenhouse
31:15And do exactly what I'm doing here, cut a slit in and plant some plants in
31:21And then something else you can do if you're going to grow tomatoes
31:25You can either get them quite small, plant them in the grow bag and let them grow up from there
31:31But sometimes what you can do is grow your tomato in a bigger pot
31:35Cut the bottom off like this and then plant that into your grow bag
31:40So it's going to get that extra root space, all the nutrients from the grow bag
31:44And then you'll have loads of delicious tomatoes
31:47And the other good thing about tomatoes is when you walk into a greenhouse
31:50And you've got all these tall tomato plants, you get that amazing smell
31:54And a very hot ripe tomato is the best kind of tomato
31:58I've promised Dorian and Lois a grapevine
32:16In actual fact, I've given them three grapevines
32:20So you can now buy at garden centres a pot of grapevines
32:24There's three different ones in there
32:26There's a green grape, a red grape and a black grape
32:31Now I'm just tying it in but I have to say once they get going
32:34You don't need to because they have these tendrils that self-twine
32:39So you might need to sort of tie the odd branch in
32:42But needless to say, grapevines, they like a nice sunny spot
32:46Which is absolutely ideal here
32:48But it'll just give some dappled shade over the patio
32:53And it sort of just says that
32:55Oh, look at that, I feel like I'm on holiday because of the grapevine
32:59One of my favourite things to grow in a greenhouse is chillies
33:12But what's great is they need this warmer climate
33:15And in this greenhouse it's in the perfect location
33:18Because it gets the morning sun there
33:20There's a tree casting a bit of shade at midday
33:22And then you get the evening sun
33:23So they are going to love it in here
33:25And the kids can also grow other fun plants
33:28Like big squashes that will grow up and hang over
33:31And even melons
33:32And because we're a little bit further south down here
33:34And we're getting some really good sun
33:36You might just get a nice big ripe melon in this greenhouse
33:40But further up north might be a little more difficult
33:43Oh, we've just made a very simple straightforward arch
33:58Out of some hazel branches
34:00The good thing about hazel branches is they won't root down
34:04If you use willow you've then got a very big willow tree
34:07Because it will root down
34:08But hazels are often used for growing beans, up runner beans
34:12But I am going to be planting this honeysuckle
34:16This one's Lannistera Henry
34:19Of course it will scrabble up these hazel poles
34:23But also up into the tree
34:25And you'll have that gorgeous scent that will waft over
34:27So it flowers from about June time through until August
34:32Great for the insects
34:35And I'm just planting it in this
34:36It just makes it look very mature
34:38The other thing I'm going to plant in this area
34:41There's a few fruit bushes
34:43So when the children are sat here in the sunshine
34:45They can just pluck a few berries off while they're sat
34:49Watching time go by
34:51It does look nice, doesn't it?
35:04Ah!
35:05Ah!
35:06Ah!
35:07Ah!
35:08Oh!
35:09Ah!
35:10That could be nice in that gap by the pergola
35:23Legs to the pergola
35:25Yes!
35:26Spilling out
35:27Spilling out
35:28Yeah, yeah
35:29Great idea
35:31Now this is hydrangea paniculata pink lady
35:46And I love paniculata hydrangeas because you get these big panicle shaped flowers
35:52That's when they go in this big cone
35:54And the best thing about hydrangeas is that you can get a hydrangea for every spot in the garden
36:01So just because you've got one type don't think, oh no I shouldn't have any more hydrangeas
36:05I think you should get more
36:07Because you can have hydrangeas for shade, hydrangeas for a sunnier spot, hydrangeas that are big leaved and furry
36:14You can get hydrangeas for everywhere
36:24With plants and fresh produce in place
36:28The raised patio, beds and pergola are settled
36:32And Charlie has created a bird bath to encourage more wildlife
36:36The team have worked hard to bring this forgotten garden back to life in just two days
36:48Just testing out your seat
36:49You look very comfy there
36:51It's lovely, nice back to it
36:53I know, it's good isn't it?
36:54You know, we were a bit daunted by all this maturity weren't we
36:57But actually I think that now is what makes the garden as well
37:00Yeah, yeah, it just finishes it off
37:02And they're going to have so many vegetables
37:04Hello, look at this
37:05I know, look at this
37:06Slightly over planted but hey ho
37:08It's fun, it's experimenting
37:10Yeah
37:11You know
37:12And then they'll be in there with the kids growing cucumbers and melons
37:16Chilis, melons
37:18Melons, oh yeah
37:19Got melons
37:20Lots of different things
37:21Yeah
37:22Yeah
37:23Do you think it's time to go and get them?
37:24I think so
37:25Come on
37:26Come on
37:27Oh
37:28When the team arrived, this once award winning allotment hosted nothing but bare grass, weeds and mature trees that were well past their prime
37:41But with a £4,000 budget it's been transformed into a modern, family friendly space with new features and nods to its former glory
37:56And just going to get you here
37:59What will Lois and Dorian think of their new garden?
38:03Lois, Dorian you inherited a beautiful garden with lots and lots of mature plants
38:11You want your children to learn about wildlife, grow vegetables and have a space that you can use as a family
38:19Do you want to open your eyes?
38:22Oh my gosh
38:24Wow
38:26This is amazing
38:27Yeah
38:28I love this
38:29I've done a fantastic job
38:31I like this little sun sunflower
38:34We actually dug that up
38:36Oh really?
38:37So it's an old circular patio
38:40This is beautiful
38:42I'm so glad they noticed all the bits of paving because it's tying the new garden in with the history of the old
38:48So we've added a bit more height to the garden with this pergola
38:52So yeah, so that would give you a little bit of interest in shade
38:55We've got grape vine
38:56So it's because the kids love grapes
38:58Oh well that's good then
39:00It's crazy
39:02Shall we wander down to the produce here?
39:05Yes please, I just love this
39:07Yeah? Can you see yourself sat out here as a family?
39:10That's the excitement
39:12Where Lois and Dorian's greenhouse was once rubble strewn and barren
39:23It's now ready for growing produce for the entire family
39:28So Chris has been busy on the greenhouse
39:33Wow
39:34That is so cool
39:35That is a transformation
39:36Yeah, so it's tidy
39:37We've got some tomatoes in there
39:39We've got a chilli plant
39:41We've got some cucumbers
39:43And there's a watermelon as well
39:45Ooh!
39:46So you're going to be using that?
39:49100%
39:50I need that watermelon
39:51You need the watermelon?
39:52I need that watermelon
39:53And the chillies
39:54And yeah
39:55Chillies
39:56I am very much looking forward to all the produce I'm going to have
39:57Yeah
39:58Right, so wander up to the next bit of produce
40:01Even this looks amazing
40:06The area in front of the greenhouse was a waste of land
40:11Overrun by invasive weeds and grass
40:15It's now a screen seating area
40:18With various produce planted in two raised beds
40:21Surrounding a bench built from sleepers
40:24Giving you a nice little bench seat to sit on
40:27Screened off the greenhouse which will also shade it
40:31We've got peas, we've got pumpkins, courgettes, lettuce, parsley
40:37All of that
40:38All of that
40:39But each year you can change
40:40And you can grow from seeds so you can grow what you want
40:43Absolutely
40:44This is just incredible
40:46This is going to give them such an opportunity to grow together as a family
40:50And then we get to the children's area
40:53Come and have a look
40:54I don't know if it's going to be the kids' area anymore
40:56I did wonder about that
40:59The area at the entrance to the old garden that was an uneven and bare patch of grass
41:05Is now a child-friendly wildlife zone
41:08With a gnarly wood path, bespoke seats with bug hotels underneath
41:13And wild meadow turf to attract pollinators and fascinate the children
41:18So much character
41:19When you've got vegetables and that
41:21Having wildlife and you attract butterflies and bees and everything like that
41:25It helps with the pollination
41:27This is very magical
41:28I just...
41:29I can't believe you've done this
41:31It's just incredible that you can create this with just your hands
41:34Like it's just...
41:35It's incredible isn't it?
41:36Yes
41:37So Lee has been really busy making these bespoke seats for the children
41:41We love them
41:42Kids?
41:43Us?
41:44I don't know
41:45And I was saying
41:46I think mum and dad are going to be bagsy in those
41:48And send the children down there to play
41:50Get them to a little plastic chair to put them on the side
41:53And the bug hotel underneath the seat
41:57Do you know what's incredible?
41:59I just love especially those strawberries that they almost seem to be growing out of the crack
42:02Do you think it was worth it?
42:04100%
42:05Okay, yes
42:06I have like...
42:07It's just...
42:08It's just incredible what you've managed to achieve in such a short period of time
42:11I have to say it wasn't just me
42:13It's the landscapers
42:14And Chris!
42:15I've got to clap for you
42:17And the team
42:19This is a team clap
42:20I don't usually give them this
42:21It's just phenomenal
42:22Thank you both so, so much
42:24The kids are just going to be so excited
42:26I cannot wait to see their reactions
42:27So, shall we get them out then?
42:29Here they come
42:32Mummy, are those monkey bars?
42:35The team have worked hard to create a creative and productive family space in Luton
42:41What can you see over there?
42:43Lois, Dorian and the children now have the perfect spot to grow, play and be inspired by
42:49When I opened my eyes, I just couldn't believe the transformation
42:53Like, it's really incredible how they, you know, just kept, you know, a lot of the original character of the garden
43:01And kind of blended new elements and weaved it into it
43:04Seeing it in real life and kind of walking around and breathing it and living it
43:08It's just absolutely amazing
43:09So for me, it wins all the awards
43:10So for me, it wins all the awards
43:11Thank you
43:13Thanks
43:15Thank you
