00:00No, this video doesn't show an anti-Zelensky protest over his refusal to sign peace with
00:05Russia.
00:09High-profile figures are sharing a video on social media that they claim shows Ukrainians
00:14gathering to protest against President Volodymyr Zelensky and his handling of Russia's war
00:19against their country.
00:20For example, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a far-right US representative, posted the video on X,
00:26stating that huge protests had erupted in Kyiv against Zelensky because, quote,
00:31he's a dictator and refuses to make peace with Moscow.
00:34Her post has 4 million views as of the time of recording, with tens of thousands of shares
00:40and likes.
00:41This is concerning because each of her claims is categorically false.
00:45To begin with, a reverse image search of stills from the video shows us its true nature.
00:50It directs us to numerous legitimate news reports showing that, yes, while the protests are recent
00:56and took place in Kyiv, they weren't against Zelensky.
01:00They were actually in opposition to a contentious law that weakened Ukraine's anti-corruption
01:04watchdogs.
01:05Critics argued that it effectively compromised the independence of the country's National
01:10Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, as they would become dependent
01:15on the politically appointed Prosecutor General.
01:17The move sparked protests across the country, but Zelensky has since backtracked in response
01:22to the protests and submitted a new draft bill to reinstate the agency's freedom.
01:27As for Marjorie Taylor Greene's claim that Zelensky is a dictator, this is completely baseless
01:32and has been debunked numerous times.
01:35Zelensky was democratically elected with a significant majority and Ukraine is now under
01:40martial law due to Russia's invasion, prohibiting elections.
01:43Additionally, Zelensky has never rejected peace with Russia.
01:47Instead, he's consistently sought peace talks with Moscow, but pushed back against what
01:51he says are unreasonable demands that undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
