00:00The European Union and the U.S. agreed on Sunday a new trade deal in the tariff dispute that has split them since mid-March.
00:09Under the agreement, the EU will face a 15% tariff on its exports to the states.
00:15However, uncertainties still remain regarding the details of the agreement and which specific sectors are covered by the 15% rate.
00:22This deal only gives you a limited amount of certainty because it's not legally binding,
00:27but also because we know that Trump is not very reliable as a partner,
00:31that he kind of changes his mind and then goes back on, steps back on the commitments he has met before.
00:37For these reasons, this is something that's kind of a fixed, a certain status quo.
00:40It sets a new baseline, which is 15%, but we very much can expect there to be new tariff scenarios in the near-term future.
00:48The custom duties, in principle, apply to all goods that can be traded.
00:53However, there are some exceptions, such as aircraft parts.
00:57Steel and aluminum are other industries where the situation is unclear.
01:01The other part that is uncertain at this point is there are a number of goods,
01:08especially semiconductors and pharmaceutical goods,
01:10where there is an ongoing investigation on the US side,
01:13which is basically establishing the legal basis for the US to put tariffs on these sectors.
01:17And what there is uncertainty about is whether this 15% maximum tariff rate
01:21that is now a part of this deal would still apply once these new tariffs for pharmaceutical goods,
01:26in particular, are put into place.
01:28The US currently imposes 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum,
01:33which will stay until a new quota system is agreed upon.
01:35The European Union says its company should invest around $600 billion
01:39into the United States from the private sector.
