00:00Signs of optimism can be seen on the horizon of the trade negotiations between the U.S. and the European Union.
00:11The EU is trying to take advantage of the 90-day pause for the sweeping reciprocal tariffs announced by the U.S. president.
00:20The Europeans' goal is to find an agreement and that is why the EU is actively negotiating.
00:27EU ministers of trade gathered in Brussels this Thursday to defend their interests and fix a common position.
00:38I think we are seeing some elements of optimism because we are seeing elements of de-escalation on the American side.
00:48You can all see that U.S. have begun conversations with China.
00:53They have reached sort of an agreement with the U.K.
00:58And that's, I think, a good sign that also negotiations with the EU are speeding up.
01:06But the EU wants to be ready for all eventualities.
01:12In case of no deal, the EU has threatened to impose countermeasures worth 95 billion euro.
01:19The U.S. goods targeted could range from agricultural and alcoholic to aircraft and electrical equipment exports.
01:26Nonetheless, the EU's proposed response still falls well below the EU goods already impacted by Trump's levies worth 380 billion euro.
01:37Well, let me be very clear.
01:39It's a big mistake to think that you are stronger if you retaliate on everything.
01:43Because if you retaliate on everything, on most of the things you are retaliating, you are hurting your own economy.
01:48You are hurting the stability of the markets.
01:49Now, by being more targeted than the United States, I think the Commission is performing a more intelligent strategy.
01:55Because also, if there is a need to increase the stability further, we can do it without stabilizing the markets.
02:01According to the expert, it is important that member states provide support to the Commission
02:06to make sure that if there is no agreement at the end of the 90 days,
02:11that the EU is ready to react with full force.
