Barnaby Joyce pushes to repeal net zero legislation

Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce introduced a private members bill into the House of Representatives on July 28, 2025, seeking to repeal the nation's emissions reduction laws.

00:00I'll start by saying net zero is going to have absolutely no effect on the climate whatsoever.

00:08Why is that the case?

00:09Because the vast majority of the globe, in both population and in GDP, are not participating in it.

00:16China is not participating in it in a real form.

00:19Neither is India, neither is Indonesia, neither is the United States of America,

00:23neither is most of Southeast Asia, nor Africa, nor the Middle East.

00:26So why are we doing this to ourselves?

00:31What is the purpose of this?

00:33What I do say is it has changed the standard of living for so many Australians.

00:39Our GDP per person is going down.

00:42People are becoming poorer.

00:45If you go into shops, they talk about 30% to 40% of their costs being energy.

00:50Whether it's pie shops or hairdressers, it doesn't matter.

00:54It's hurting the Australians.

00:55In a more pronounced way, it's hurting the poorest.

00:59Because it's the poorest who need the power to keep themselves warm at a time of the year like this in areas such as mine.

01:07It is putting people, and it genuinely is, out of their house.

01:11Because not only is it the price of power, it's also in the price of groceries.

01:15It filters through.

01:16Why are we doing this?

01:18Why are we doing this to these people?

01:22And when you look at it, you have to say, what else is it doing?

01:25It's dividing our communities, not down the middle.

01:28It's dividing them 90% who are either furious or just angry, and 10% who feel intimidated.

01:35It is driving out in our nation now.

01:38We are losing manufacturing, our plastics, our fertiliser, our glass.

01:43We are losing other industries such as aluminium just holding on by their fingernails, only with government subsidies.

01:49We are in a time where we have 35,000 troops in talisman sabre in 19 countries.

01:56This is actually making us weaker.
