Comedian Lucy Porter talks about her new Edinburgh show, playing at the Midlands Fringe Festival and memories of seeing Pop Will Eat Itself at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall in the 1990s
Transcript
00:00Okay, so Lucy, tell me what it means for you to be at the Midlands Fringe.
00:04Well, I'm delighted to be at the Midlands Fringe. My mum was from the Midlands, she was a Coventry girl,
00:09and Wolverhampton has a special place in my heart because I came here to see Potwell Eat Itself in, I think, about 1994,
00:17and it was one of the best nights of my life, so it's good to be back.
00:20So it's a city that's obviously got a big meaning to you then?
00:22It has, well, it's an artistic hub, I've always thought, so it's lovely, yeah, it's just lovely to be part of an art scene in the Midlands.
00:30And when you heard about the Fringe, what was your first reaction to it?
00:33Yes, please, will there be biscuits? And it turns out there are biscuits, so it's got it all going on.
00:39Comedy, performance, poetry, biscuits, I mean, you can't ask for more than that.
00:44And from this show tonight, without giving too much away, what can people expect?
00:48Well, it's called Let Yourself Go, and I intend to do just that, so I'm not saying there'll be nudity, but I'm not ruling it out.
00:57And looking ahead, do you think that just this first weekend can inspire more people to put on events like this across the region?
01:04Yeah, I mean, I think it's amazing to see a festival kind of in its nascent, if that's even a word.
01:11It's just really exciting because I hope it will grow and grow,
01:13and it's just so nice for people to get out and sort of have a laugh together, because we live in tough times.
01:20And looking ahead, you're doing Edinburgh. How much are you looking forward to doing that?
01:24I am raring to go, but I'm not going to do anything in Edinburgh that hasn't been approved by the people of Wolverhampton first,
01:30so they're going to make or break the show tonight.
