Caerphilly County Borough Council have become the latest in Wales to implement a new 3-weekly bin collection in an effort to increase their poor recycling levels, but some locals certainly aren’t convinced.

00:00I mean, people might get used to it, but they barely remember to take bins now, let alone every three weeks.
00:08It's probably not going to be good, but I suppose we'll see what happens, I guess.
00:15Cofilly, home to the second biggest castle in the United Kingdom and the second lowest recycling rates in Wales.
00:21The local authority here are one of only a handful around Wales who have consistently failed to meet recycling targets
00:27despite neighbours being among the best in the country.
00:31Councils all across Wales are finding ways to improve their recycling levels,
00:34and one which has become a popular choice is moving from a two-weekly bin removal cycle to three-weekly.
00:39Popular in terms of the amount of councils adopting it, but not so popular with locals.
00:44People here in Cofilly don't seem to be on board quite yet.
00:48Can't be, because actually two weeks is too much.
00:53My bin is full in five days. I've got only one bin.
00:57And I work in hostels as well. The bins are easily filled up.
01:02Two weeks is too much. It should be done at least, actually, a week.
01:08That's all I can say.
01:09If they make it two to three weeks, eight, three weeks, it's not good, Mike. It's not good.
01:15They can't take you for what we've got now, right?
01:18So how can we go to two weeks, to three weeks?
01:21I mean, it's just, they take my money, but they don't give me no service.
01:25It's not very, very good. We already have loads of rats and stuff.
01:31Probably going to go quite bad, I suppose.
01:35No, I'm not worried about it. I think it's a sensible, I think it's a sensible thing to do, to be honest.
01:40Yeah, definitely.
01:41The changes, which also include additional separation of recycling materials, won't come into effect until 2027.
01:48And garden waste and recycling won't be reduced in the same way as black bins.
01:51But people are already concerned for what the impact will be here in Caffili.
01:55I mean, I guess it kind of makes sense, but when you're going to overflow and then already,
02:00like you've got some houses that have like more than like five people living there, that's a lot of waste.
02:05It's just probably not really going to work very well.
02:08So it's probably not going to be good in the long run, I suppose.
02:12Yeah, there's other people that's going to affect, don't you?
02:14If you've got children, right, you're obviously going to tune over more waste than anything else, right?
02:18Most people recycle, well, most.
02:21Well, I observed that most people don't recycle really, because it's all general waste people, where I work like.
02:29So you can see why the council are trying to implement it?
02:31Yeah, maybe, probably, but doing it every three weeks is not good, because they're easily full.
02:39Yes, I suppose if you're a large family, you're going to create a lot of rubbish,
02:43but I suppose it's just to encourage people to take extra care to recycle.
02:47I mean, you know, I can't speak for everybody else,
02:50but I think probably, on the whole, people want life as easy as possible.
02:57But yeah, I approve of it anyway.
