Savant vs Savant! Who is this Red Sox mystery guess? Can you guess by the voice?
Hint: Big World Series moments #mlb
Transcript
00:00Oh, good morning, Mr. Mystery Guest.
00:05Good morning. How are you?
00:07Great. Thank you.
00:09But you already know, you already know.
00:11Can we hear a little bit more?
00:13We have to ask him questions.
00:16Are we, do we know you, Mystery Guest, sir,
00:19from your performances on the Red Sox in 2018?
00:26No.
00:27So, did Will Middlebrooks accurately tell a story
00:32that said that you didn't need John Farrell,
00:36that your players had the 2013 Red Sox lockdown?
00:43Cannot confirm that, but I did play with Will Middlebrooks.
00:48Did you tell Ken Rosenthal that it's not about war,
00:52it's about who you go to war with?
00:55You're doing pretty good, bud.
00:59You're doing pretty good.
01:00You must have heard somebody talking about it.
01:04All I heard was Tom being yelled at before.
01:09Johnny Gomes.
01:10Wow.
01:11Yes, it is Johnny Gomes.
01:13Johnny, Curtis nailed it.
01:15Did you get that from voice?
01:17Yeah.
01:18Very unique voice.
01:19Johnny, welcome to the show.
01:21I appreciate it.
01:22Not only voice, but geez, you went down a rabbit hole
01:25in some of these interviews.
01:27I was thinking maybe a home run here, or a walk-off.
01:30I just remember, I remember, Johnny,
01:33I was in St. Louis,
01:36and it was game four.
01:41You were down 1-0.
01:42It was 1-1.
01:43And then I think in the sixth,
01:45you had a three-run homer,
01:47like one of the truly underrated, great, big home runs.
01:51Because that series, you're down two games to one
01:53entering that game, entering that game four.
01:55You lose that three games to one.
01:57Cardinals, a totally different story.
01:58You get that game, you win the next one.
02:00And then you win it back here at Fenway in game six.
02:02That home run was one of the more underrated
02:05in Red Sox history.
02:07Yeah, that was the story, right?
02:09And it was coming off that wild interference call
02:11the night before.
02:12Yep, with Bill Boos.
02:14That ended a freaking World Series game,
02:16which is wild.
02:18It's not like the interference from catching,
02:20you know, and in the game is wild.
02:22But in the playoffs or the World Series,
02:24it's a lot more wild.
02:26But yeah, man, that's a big hit.
02:27Big home run for me.
02:28Big, you know, home run Red Sox history.
02:31But, you know, a win is a win.
02:33You know, everybody talks, Johnny,
02:34about that was a member of that team.
02:36We had Will Middlebrooks on right before
02:37the start of this season
02:38about what the terrorism at the finish line
02:42of the marathon did to sort of reinvigorate the team
02:46and playing for a city that was really going through
02:49a really tough period.
02:50And nobody really encapsulated that better than David,
02:53but I thought you did as well.
02:55What did that season,
02:56how was that different in every way
02:58compared to every other season of baseball
03:00you played in your life?
03:02Yeah, it was wild.
03:03I mean, it truly felt like we were,
03:05we were like living actively in like American history
03:09and like a movie.
03:12You know, when you're going through something
03:14and that, you know, you look up to the elders
03:16or you look up to the vets
03:18and you ask for advice,
03:19like no one's ever dealt with this.
03:21No one's ever lived in a city
03:22that's been in a lockdown for terrorism.
03:25The unknown.
03:27And then as it, you know, kind of unfolds
03:29and we get moving,
03:30we get to see the heroes,
03:31we get to hear the good stories
03:33and the powerful stories
03:34and the boots on the ground
03:35and the tying of the tourniquets.
03:38And, you know, we'll never get those four lives
03:40that we lost,
03:42but man, just hearing the powerful stories
03:44of the boots on the ground,
03:46you know, not only at the marathon,
03:47but all around.
03:48And then the powerful stories
03:49of the rehab coming out of it,
03:53it was, it was mind boggling
03:55and it was really heavy.
03:57I mean, it seemed like every single day at home,
04:00there's a first pitch
04:01or some sort of something
04:02rallying around the marathon.
04:04And I thought the Red Sox did a really good job.
04:06At times it was super like heavy hearted,
04:09but they just didn't want to go away
04:11because so many people
04:12needed to get recognized
04:13and it took us all the way
04:14to the end of the World Series.
04:16Johnny, we talked to a lot of people
04:17and they talk about how playing in Boston
04:19is just different.
04:20You had the opportunity to play
04:21on a few different teams,
04:23but to play in Boston during that time,
04:25what makes Boston different for players?
04:29Yeah, this is title town.
04:30You know, it is.
04:31I mean, at one point, you know,
04:33you probably had a favorite player
04:35somewhere up in Boston
04:36or your dad did or your mom did.
04:39Um, this is where,
04:41this is where guys come
04:42to get really, really famous
04:44and dudes come to die.
04:46They really do.
04:48Uh, this place will spit you up
04:50and, and, and, you know,
04:51chew you up and spit you out.
04:53And at the same time, I mean,
04:54you can get, you know,
04:55cheered from,
04:56from the highest mountain in the area.
04:58Uh, it's, it's World Series or bust.
05:00That's all I knew it.
05:01I came up in the AL East
05:03and I knew that you were going to have
05:05to get through the Red Sox
05:06to go there in 2008.
05:08With what happened with Tampa
05:10when I was on that team.
05:12But it's, it's a powerful area.
05:13It is.
05:14I mean, people, you know,
05:15love their sports out here
05:16as they should.
05:17There's tons of titles
05:18all over the place.
05:19There's tons of, you know,
05:20Hall of Famers all over the place.
05:22But this is, uh,
05:23this is where sports happens.
05:24And I'm, I'm blessed
05:26to be able to have the ring
05:27on my finger
05:27with the Red Sox on it.
05:28Johnny, I, I just love
05:30understanding the,
05:32the vantage point of everybody.
05:33We obviously watched it as fans,
05:34but take me back.
05:36Game two, ALCS 2013.
05:39You're down five to one.
05:41The Tigers just shut you down
05:43through the game one.
05:44Game two,
05:44you're about to go back to Detroit,
05:46down two games to none
05:47and probably lose the series there.
05:49Where were you?
05:50I don't even know if you were on base.
05:51I should probably know that.
05:51But when, when Ortiz
05:52hit the tying Grand Slam
05:54in the bottom of the eighth,
05:55walk me through where you were.
05:56Have you ever heard Fenway louder
05:59than in that moment?
06:01So it was actually in the hole
06:02and, um, the ending was wild.
06:07And he was wild.
06:07I remember they brought in
06:09someone who wasn't that good
06:10because they had that big lead
06:12when they probably should have
06:13brought someone in
06:14just to close the game down.
06:15Yeah.
06:16Uh, they allowed some walks.
06:18They allowed some bloops.
06:19And it was just starting to unravel.
06:21And I forget what happened
06:23for David to get up,
06:24but bases were loaded.
06:25And I was just like,
06:28duh.
06:29Like, of course.
06:32Like, if you look at my reaction,
06:35like, everyone was going nuts
06:37in the dugout.
06:37And I was like, honestly,
06:38what the trick did you think
06:39was going to happen?
06:40Did you really think
06:41David Ortiz was going to strike out?
06:44Like, of course,
06:45he's hitting the first pitch
06:47over the fence for a Grand Slam
06:49and this place went nuts.
06:51But I mean,
06:51that guy's a cartoon character, man.
06:53He's so good.
06:53And unfortunately,
06:55at the moment,
06:56I wasn't that surprised.
06:57I really wasn't.
06:59If someone else hit a home run
07:00like me in game four,
07:01I think everyone's surprised.
07:03But, um,
07:03I mean,
07:05this guy,
07:07you know,
07:07he's got clutch
07:08written all over it.
07:09He's got Hall of Fame
07:10written all over his career.
07:12But, um,
07:13yeah,
07:13I was just like,
07:14of course,
07:14this thing unravels
07:15with David Ortiz' base loaded.
07:17He just needs one pitch.
07:19Did Napoli put his shirt on
07:21at any point in October?
07:24This guy doesn't need a shirt, man.
07:26I mean,
07:26he's got a great body.
07:28Uh,
07:28he's got a great personality.
07:30People forget
07:31when he got here.
07:32So,
07:32he had his heart ripped out
07:34twice in Texas,
07:35right?
07:35He was an out away
07:36from being a world champ
07:38twice.
07:39Uh,
07:40so coming here
07:41to be able to finish off
07:42with a win,
07:43he deserved a little,
07:45uh,
07:45little exhale,
07:46if you will.
07:46Well,
07:48it's great to have you on.
07:49It's great to hear your voice.
07:51This is a,
07:52currently,
07:52as they sit right now,
07:53it's a playoff team.
07:55Um,
07:56you're,
07:56I gotta get you on record.
07:58Uh,
07:58this,
07:58this team go far
08:00this season?
08:02Well,
08:02I think,
08:03I think this is a race
08:05to the trade deadline.
08:06I do.
08:07Um,
08:07I think as it sits
08:09right now
08:10for the first time
08:10in a long time,
08:11like the AL East
08:12is,
08:12is wide open.
08:14Um,
08:15I wouldn't be surprised
08:17if Tampa squeaks
08:18back in a little bit
08:19and you have
08:20a four team race.
08:21So I think it's a race
08:23to the trade deadline
08:23because I think
08:24all four of these teams
08:25do need help.
08:26Now,
08:27when you need help,
08:28you go out
08:28and get someone.
08:29You don't eliminate someone.
08:31I know there's a lot
08:31of trade rumors
08:32with guys on the socks
08:33like Levy.
08:35Like,
08:35you don't trade dudes
08:37away
08:37and expect to be good.
08:39Right?
08:39I,
08:39I,
08:40I have not seen
08:41that work.
08:42So I'll be curious
08:43to see,
08:44uh,
08:46how Brez
08:46and the crew
08:47do it.
08:48But I,
08:48I'm not familiar
08:49with trading dudes
08:50away
08:51on your big league
08:52team
08:53to then be successful.
08:54You bring up
08:55Breslow.
08:56We talk a lot
08:57about the analytics
08:58and where the game
09:00is at this,
09:00at this point
09:01relying on that stuff.
09:03Does that bother you?
09:06So here's the deal
09:07with the analytics
09:07to me.
09:08I think it's like,
09:09um,
09:09you know,
09:10I just talk about
09:10the analytics
09:11is like a grocery
09:11store,
09:12right?
09:12It's just all
09:13this information
09:14just all over
09:14the place,
09:15just like grocery
09:15or sends a food.
09:17Now,
09:17everyone that goes
09:18into the grocery
09:19store picks
09:20different stuff,
09:21right?
09:21You're going to
09:21get the ready,
09:22the ready made
09:23stuff.
09:24You're going
09:24to get the meat.
09:25You're going
09:25to get some,
09:26you're going
09:26to get some Italian,
09:27whatever.
09:28You're going
09:28to get dessert
09:29and you go home
09:30and you eat it.
09:31Not all diets
09:31are the same
09:32and not all diets
09:33are good for you.
09:34That's what analytics
09:34are.
09:35Everyone has
09:36the same analytics.
09:37It's just how
09:38you use them.
09:39And at the same
09:39point,
09:40on that
09:42is if analytics
09:43didn't work,
09:44they would go
09:44away.
09:45Like baseball
09:46is a slow
09:47kind of dumb
09:47game at times,
09:48but it's a really
09:49smart game.
09:50If something
09:50doesn't work,
09:51it'll go away.
09:52So these numbers,
09:52they don't lie,
09:54but it's all
09:55about relaying
09:56the information
09:58and analytics
09:58to the player
09:59and that bridge
10:00is what makes
10:02teams really
10:02successful.
10:03Yeah,
10:04I mean,
10:04I think,
10:04Johnny,
10:05that 2013
10:06team to me
10:07was a middle
10:09finger to
10:09analytics.
10:11I view you
10:12and the role
10:14that Napoli
10:15and how Lackey
10:16overcame everything
10:17and obviously
10:17Ortiz being the
10:18best player
10:19and all the
10:19different guys
10:20that sort of
10:21coalesced following
10:22the destruction
10:23of April 15th.
10:24It was like,
10:26I just watch it
10:27now and I hear
10:28Craig Breslow
10:29come on our show
10:30and say that
10:30Cora's job is
10:31to synthesize data.
10:33Like,
10:33I don't know.
10:34I don't think
10:34that that's the job
10:35of a baseball
10:35manager.
10:36Do you?
10:36Well,
10:39I mean,
10:39moving forward
10:40where we are
10:40now,
10:41you know,
10:42it is.
10:42I mean,
10:42it's some
10:43people's job
10:43to charge
10:44their Tesla.
10:45You know,
10:46that was 20
10:48years ago.
10:49You know,
10:49it was someone's
10:50job to put the
10:51needle on the
10:53record.
10:53Right.
10:54That's me.
10:5420 years ago.
10:55You don't do
10:56that anymore.
10:57So the game
10:57has evolved.
10:58It really has.
10:59And it's up
11:00to the players,
11:01the coaches,
11:01and the GM
11:02to evolve with
11:03it and how
11:05that information
11:06is brought to
11:06the players
11:07and from the
11:08GM to the
11:08manager.
11:09That's going
11:10to be 30
11:10different ways.
11:11And I think
11:11that's what's
11:12mind-boggling
11:12from playing
11:13in different
11:14places and
11:14making the
11:14stops I have
11:15is there is
11:16truly 30
11:17different ways
11:18to play this
11:18game.
11:19Some boards
11:20haven't figured
11:21out in certain
11:22years and then
11:23some they don't.
11:24And it all
11:24goes back to
11:25someone's opinion
11:26or some belief
11:27that they have
11:27in a stat
11:28which is
11:29accurate,
11:30which works.
11:31But the
11:32most important
11:33stat, believe
11:34it or not,
11:34at the end
11:35of the day
11:35is touching
11:35the dish.
11:36Whoever touches
11:37home plate more
11:37than the other
11:38team is going
11:39to win the
11:39ball game.
11:40And how that
11:41happens is
11:41different for
11:42a lot of
11:42orgs and
11:43teams.
11:44But yeah,
11:45analytics is a
11:46part of our
11:46game and it's
11:47not going
11:47anywhere.
11:48Wiggy leads
11:48the league in
11:49touching the
11:49dish.
11:52Johnny Gomes,
11:54thank you for
11:54being our
11:55mystery guest.
11:56Good job,
11:57Greg.
11:57You made
11:57Curtis's day
11:58and his week.
12:00I wasn't a
12:01mystery for
12:01that long.
12:02No,
12:02it was not a
12:03mystery for
12:03that long.
12:04Curtis is
12:05like Rain
12:05Man.
12:06He is insane
12:06when it comes
12:07to Red Sox.
12:07It's my only
12:08skill.
12:08Some people
12:09can drive
12:09and I can
12:10notice the
12:11Red Sox
12:11player by
12:12their voice.
12:13Honestly,
12:14you sound
12:15a powerful
12:15analytic that
12:16you got.
12:17You sound
12:20surprisingly good
12:21for being out
12:22last night with
12:23our friend
12:23Brian Black.
12:24That's the
12:25amazing part
12:26of this.
12:27Yeah,
12:27you got to
12:28go see the
12:28people,
12:28right?
12:29You got to
12:29mix it up
12:30with the
12:30people.
12:31Are you here
12:32for all the
12:32games this
12:33weekend?
12:34Yeah,
12:35I'm here this
12:36weekend and
12:36most importantly,
12:37a big shout out
12:38to Run to
12:39Home Base.
12:39That's what I'll
12:40be doing.
12:41And I love
12:42charity work and
12:43I love getting
12:44around good
12:45people and good
12:46causes and I
12:47hate running.
12:48So this is a
12:49big pat on my
12:50back for doing
12:51this.
12:51I'm knocking a
