During remarks on the Senate floor Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke about the 1998 Capitol shooting.

00:00And finally, on a more solemn note, today marks 27 years since Detective John Gibson
00:06and Officer Jacob Chestnut of the Capitol Police were killed in the line of duty
00:11defending the Capitol building from a lone gunman.
00:15In the face of grave danger, not only to themselves, but to all of us who were in the Capitol that day
00:20I was a congressman then, Detective Gibson and Officer Chestnut responded with extraordinary courage and heroism
00:28because of their sacrifice, their sacrifice, a potentially catastrophic situation was contained in a matter of minutes
00:37and countless innocent lives were spared.
00:41So today we honor the memories of Detective Gibson and Officer Chestnut
00:45and we thank all of our Capitol Police for doing the work they do day in and day out
00:49to keep the Capitol complex safe and secure.
00:53I yield the floor.
