Taiwan is seeing a surge in Chinese military activity in areas surrounding the country. It comes as Taiwan is set to hold its largest-ever recall elections on Saturday.

00:05The Defence Ministry says it spotted 48 Chinese military aircraft and 9 naval vessels operating near the country in the 24 hours up to Thursday morning.
00:1636 of those aircraft entered Taiwan's Air Defence Identification Zone, or ADIZ.
00:22This area isn't Taiwan's airspace, but acts as a buffer zone for defensive purposes.
00:27It comes after Taiwan held its largest ever annual military drills, which wrapped up last week,
00:33and as it prepares to hold nationwide recall elections on Saturday.
00:38The military says it employed its own aircraft, ships and missile systems to respond to the incursions.
