Taiwan extends mandatory military service as tensions with mainland China increase

Taiwan will extend compulsory military service from four months to one year starting in 2024, amid rising tensions between the self-ruled island and mainland China. Calling the move an “incredibly difficult decision”, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said on December 27, 2022, that the plan aims to meet military needs “under the rapidly changing situation”.
