00:0032 teams are now officially in training camp.
00:03Well, breathe a sigh of relief.
00:04Football's kind of back, right?
00:06We'll hear from several of the quarterbacks today.
00:08You don't want to miss that.
00:09But one of the last teams arriving for camp is the Steelers.
00:12Let's see some of those guys arriving.
00:15That'll make Steelers fans happy and Aaron Rodgers happy.
00:17DK Metcalf arriving for his first day of Steelers camp.
00:21You see him making his way in there.
00:23And now, newly very rich teammate, T.J. Watt, arrives.
00:26He carries his own luggage, though.
00:27He's a man of the people.
00:28And a tower fan into the dorm rooms.
00:32You need that.
00:32Watt met with the media as he arrived and, of course, was asked about his $108 million guaranteed contract.
00:38It's hard to fathom.
00:39I'm just being as blunt as I can about it.
00:41It truly is.
00:42It's an insane life that I live.
00:45I get to do what I love for a living.
00:48I'm living the absolute dream.
00:50I don't take that for granted one bit at all.
00:53The money side of it is hard to really wrap my head around it.
00:56And I'm sure one day I will.
00:57But right now, it's still all crazy to me.
01:00But more than anything, I wanted to play football.
01:02I want to play football.
01:03I want to continue to give everything that I possibly can to this city, to this organization.
01:08He knew those dorm rooms well.
01:09He knew he needed the fan.
01:10All right.
01:10We welcome in our Steelers reporter, Brooke Pryor, from Steelers Camp.
01:13Brooke, what's going on at St. Vincent College today?
01:18Well, just behind me, the team is getting ready to take the field for their conditioning test.
01:23It's the thing they do on the eve of training camp every year.
01:26And then tomorrow, they'll be out here with fans for their first official day of training camp practice,
01:32which, remember, it is now in the afternoon because Mike Tomlin said those morning practices,
01:37it simply was not hot enough.
01:39And while we didn't see Aaron Rodgers move in today, I'm told that he is here.
01:44He's been in meetings all day.
01:46He arrived to the Pittsburgh area last week.
01:49But we did talk to, as you saw, T.J. Watt.
01:52We also chatted with Jalen Ramsey, who the most interesting thing he said to me was that
01:57when I asked, is he going to play safety?
01:59Is he going to play corner?
02:01Is he going to be in the slot?
02:02He said, I'm a football player.
02:04I guess we'll find out together.
02:05So that's the number one thing that I'm going to be watching when they take the field for camp practice tomorrow.
02:11And by the way, Booger, I know we gave Aaron Rodgers a lot of grief for the mattress situation here at training camp.
02:18I have one small correction.
02:21He has been away to training camp before.
02:24He has slept on dorm room beds later than when he was at Berkeley.
02:27And I'm told, by the way, one coach told me that it's not a Twin XL.
02:32They have full-size mattresses.
02:34And you can even upgrade your mattress if you so choose.
02:38So we'll ask Aaron Rodgers tomorrow if he's upgraded that mattress.
02:43Oh, you can upgrade the mattresses.
02:48Booger would be upgrading to every pillow top possible.
02:51That's Booger McFarlane as we welcome you into NFL Live.
02:54As you can tell, a busy day across the league.
02:56Lindsey Theory is here as well.
02:58Louis Riddick joining Booger.
03:00Boog, we're going to end up talking about that mattress a lot.
03:02I can just feel it.
03:03We got a lot of live reports from training camps, too.
03:06We'll take you all around the league today.
03:08Now, another player who's looking to help Pittsburgh get that win is newly acquired corner Jalen Ramsey,
03:13who Brooke was just talking about.
03:14Here's more from Ramsey earlier today.
03:16You look at the defense from the D-line, probably the best D-line in the NFL.
03:20Then you got PQ leading the linebacker.
03:22And then the secondary, me and Slay have had a relationship for a while.
03:25Me and Joey, we got some kind of family ties going on.
03:28My bad.
03:29And then, yeah, add me in there.
03:31Obviously, me and Deshaun have played with each other before on the same team.
03:35So, just a lot of excitement around the defense.
03:38But not just the defense, the offense, too.
03:39Obviously, A-Rod's here now.
03:41D-K, who I've had a lot of battles with.
03:43That's been fun.
03:44Okay, so a lot of big personalities are going to be in the Steelers' locker room, right?
03:50Mike Tomlin knows how to handle all that.
03:52But how do you see this shaking out, Lindsay?
03:53Laura, this is so interesting because you see Jalen Ramsey pop up and you go,
03:56oh, yeah, on top of Aaron Rodgers, on top of D-K, there's Jalen Ramsey.
04:00Like you mentioned, Mike Tomlin has plenty of experience handling some big personalities.
04:05But this can go one of two ways, right?
04:07You win games.
04:09You all are on the same train going forward.
04:10And those personalities all fall in line.
04:13If things start to go sideways, those personalities can get a little out of control, right?
04:18You know, you go back to D-K Metcalf.
04:21Back when he was in Seattle, I was covering him.
04:23And things with his quarterback weren't always on the same page.
04:26And sometimes that became kind of a hot-temper situation.
04:29And the two, you know, had to cool down for a few minutes.
04:32With Jalen Ramsey, right?
04:33Like, I think we all well know that Jalen likes to do things the way he wants them done.
04:39And he is a football player.
04:40He'll play anywhere that the coaches ask him to do anything that's asked of him.
04:44But he has strong opinions on some of that, too.
04:46So if you are winning, that's all good and dandy.
04:50But Mike Tomlin might have his work cut out for him, which is personalities alone.
04:55Yeah, Lindsey, he may have his work cut out.
04:57But there's no other coach that I would rather have in that position than Mike Tomlin.
05:01And when you're dealing with professional football players, as you heard Brooke talk about,
05:04you can get whatever type of mattress you want, king size, pillow top, you can blow it, whatever you need.
05:11This organization, and just like any organization in professional football, they cater to the athletes.
05:15So what do they want you to do?
05:17Show up and do your job.
05:18And no coach gets athletes or gets professional football players to do that more than Mike Tomlin.
05:23So, yeah, it's a ton of personalities, a lot of egos.
05:26Name me a good football team that doesn't have that.
05:29But there's no coach, I think, that can get those personalities and get those egos to come and realize we're all about the team.
05:36We're about the Pittsburgh Steelers.
05:37We have one common goal.
05:39We're going to be physical.
05:40Mike Tomlin even moved their practices from the morning to the afternoon.
05:44Why?
05:45I want to practice in the hottest part of the day.
05:47So they are going to a coach who, I don't care about your personality.
05:50I don't care about your ego.
05:52You came here to work, Louis.
05:54And I think Mike Tomlin is going to lay that foundation down.
05:56And when he does, I think these personalities will fall in line.
06:02Yeah, look, there are certain organizations, right, that kind of carry a certain kind of cachet that I think even the players that are habitual line pushers,
06:14I don't want to say line steppers, will probably dial it back simply out of respect for the organization itself.
06:20And Pittsburgh is just one of those places.
06:22And on top of it, look, obviously, we all love Mike Tomlin.
06:27We all love what he has done.
06:28We all love the kind of respect that he has earned, not just from us, but from other coaches and from players.
06:35Everybody loves Mike, and everybody respects him for what he has done throughout his career.
06:39But I think even most importantly, and you see there on your screen, look,
06:43what this really I think this season is going to come down to for the Pittsburgh Steelers overall,
06:47look, a lot of the focus is going to be on those two guys right there that you see on your screen.
06:52Number eight, Aaron Rodgers, and that guy to your right right there, Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator.
06:57I really think, like, that is really where this whole thing really hinges.
07:01Because I think on the defensive side, look, with guys like T.J. Watt and Cam Hayward,
07:04they're going to be fine on that side of the ball.
07:06No one's going to mess with Cam Hayward.
07:08No one's going to mess with T.J.
07:09No one's going to come in there and try and go, hey, look, I know you guys have done it like this for a decade plus,
07:13but we have a better way.
07:14No one's doing that.
07:15No one's doing that, but on the offensive side, that's where it is.
07:20That relationship, how does it grow?
07:23How does it work in the toughest of times?
07:25Because there are going to be ups and downs, and how do they keep the trains on the track
07:29and get it and continue it and get it improving?
07:32Because if it improves, they can improve upon that 10-1 season from a year ago.
07:37The one thing is the schedule.
07:39It's difficult.
07:39The Steelers have the third hardest schedule in the AFC, difficult division,
07:43and according to ESPN Analytics, jury's still out on where they rank in hardest camp mattresses,
07:48but let's see if anybody wants to comment there.
07:51All right, let's go to the Bengals camp.
07:52There's all 32 teams in camp.
07:54Trey Hendrickson continues his holdout, and ever since Zach Taylor took over as head coach in 2019,
08:00the Bengals have been slow starters out of the gate, right?
08:02In that span, they've gone 1-11 in the first two weeks of the season.
08:07That's the worst record in the NFL during that span.
08:09The games have been tight, though, with nine of the losses decided by six points or fewer.
08:14In all other weeks of the season, the Bengals have a winning record.
08:16Taylor and Joe Burrow talked about the plan for the lead-up to the season today.
08:20The only thing last year with him was there were days where we limited him, where he did not throw.
08:28Right now, there's none of that, so he'll participate every single day like he normally would, fully healthy,
08:33and then anticipate playing him more in games than we ever have.
08:36Those are valuable reps that we haven't had in the past for good reason,
08:42but I think we're making the right decision this year, and I think that's going to benefit us in the long run.
08:50Oh, so it's a team that is clearly notorious for slow starts.
08:54We don't love that. Bengals fans are all too familiar with it.
08:57But do you like the idea of the Bengals playing Joe Burrow more in the preseason this year?
09:03Yeah, because here's the thing, Laura.
09:05We can say sit him on the sideline and bubble wrap him,
09:08but the only way football players get better is playing football.
09:10Now, you've got to be smart, and he's not going to be any live scrimmages.
09:13He's not going to be getting put in any disadvantageous situations.
09:17But I think if you're Zach Taylor and you're trying to figure out a way,
09:22how can I get my team to start faster?
09:23You've got to get your team up to speed.
09:25They typically start hitting their stride after week eight.
09:28Well, guess what? How can you do that sooner?
09:30You've got to get them more reps, more live action, and practice is just not going to get it.
09:34So when he's out there in the preseason, put the first team offensive line.
09:38You max protect him. You make sure he's protected.
09:40But you've got to get your guy some reps.
09:43That way you can get off to a faster start.
09:44Because this offense, unless they can figure out a way to get Shamar Stewart and Frey Henderson in there
09:49and get them up to speed really quickly, this offense may have to carry the team early on.
09:53And so I like the idea because as football players, Lewis,
09:57the only way we get better is by honing our craft out there on the field.
10:00And even somebody as great as Joe Burrow still needs to get better.
10:06Yeah, I don't think there's any maybe about it as far as them having to carry the load book.
10:10I mean, I think everybody knows in Cincinnati and around the world who follow the Cincinnati Bengals,
10:16this season hinges on Joe, Jamar, and T.
10:22Those three guys, given what they got paid, have to give the Bengals their return on investment.
10:29Simply because of what they got paid, number one.
10:32And number two, because of everything else that you have to sacrifice because of it
10:37when you're that top-heavy from a salary cap payment structure.
10:41Okay, that's why Trey Hedgensick is fighting like a dog trying to get paid
10:45because they're probably telling him, look, we don't have a whole lot to go around.
10:48That's why there isn't any other real high-priced marquee free agent on the defensive side of the ball.
10:54That's why they can't.
10:55And look, that's just the way it is.
10:57That's the way they have decided to make their bed.
11:00So they're going to have to deal with it now.
11:01Now, I'll tell you what, this offensive line is still a work in progress.
11:05It's always been a work in progress.
11:07Every single year Joe's been there.
11:09They can play him in the preseason if they want.
11:11This isn't a controlled scrimmage, though.
11:12So you better make sure Joe doesn't get touched.
11:15I don't need to see if Joe can take a hit.
11:18I don't need to see if he can navigate the pocket with people around his feet.
11:21I don't need to see any of that BS.
11:23They better make sure he gets to the regular season, though,
11:26as much as they're trying to get on the same page quickly and up to speed.
11:30Lewis hit on it.
11:31Joe, Jamar, and T.
11:33Those guys have been playing a lot of football together.
11:35I understand they need to start faster.
11:37But the question is, why haven't they already,
11:39when they've had so much chemistry, so much time?
11:42Those guys all have been paid now.
11:44So I don't think for the Bengals that starting Joe Burrow in any preseason games
11:49is the best idea, which is really contradictory to what I would have said in 2018
11:53when Sean McVay was crazy and sat all of his starters,
11:56and this was a big controversy.
11:57But now fast forward, Joe Burrow doesn't need to be the guy who's out there
12:02in a preseason game.
12:04And when you look at what the Bengals are doing during the preseason,
12:07I'm wondering why aren't they doing more joint practices,
12:09where it is kind of a more controlled, competitive situation.
12:12And, Book, I know you can't wrap him in bubble wrap,
12:15but if it's Joe Burrow, I would certainly try to get to the regular season
12:19without the risk of injury.
12:20He has been injury-prone, though, too.
12:22And even at times in the last few years, this time of year, right,
12:25he's been at a little bit of a disadvantage.
12:27I think that could be a reason for some of the slow starts as well.
12:29He hasn't been fully healthy.
12:31The Bengals, by the way, their first two games were against the Browns
12:33and Jaguars, who combined for seven wins last season.
12:35So you can't lose those.
12:37You've got to win them.
12:38All right, new on NFL Live, another holdout storyline from our Adam Schefter.
12:41This coming from the Commanders this morning,
12:44they officially placed wide receiver Terry McLaurin on the reserve,
12:47did not arriving at camp, and look at this.
12:51Stephon Diggs is celebrating today adoption day for puppies,
12:55and he puts this little guy down but then loses him.
12:57I mean, this would have been really bad.
12:58If not for a really shifty great athlete, that puppy is on the loose.
13:02But don't worry, he's secured the goods.
13:05Puppy security, important thing there,
13:07as you see Diggs signing that three-year deal with the Patriots in March.
13:11Here's Drake May earlier today.
13:13I think coming into year two, hopefully,
13:15will be a kind of bigger stride for me,
13:19kind of take the next level to playing,
13:20kind of chess match with the defense,
13:22and then just kind of remaining a passer longer when I scramble.
13:24I think that's big, kind of getting outside the pocket,
13:26remaining a passer longer, hoping some big plays,
13:28scramble plays, and just making the defense.
13:30I feel like I had good times last year where I had some guys deep
13:33that I may have missed them or took off running instead.
13:35So just try to remain a passer and just keep trying to work on footwork.
13:38I think that's the big thing.
13:39New offense, new play actions, new concepts,
13:43just try to time it up and get a good group.
13:45Drake May, always very impressive.
13:49I'm still distracted by that cute puppy,
13:50but let's welcome in our Patriots reporter, Mike Reese, from Fox Pro.
13:53Mike, what did you see other than puppies at day one out there on the practice field?
14:00Well, Laura, I got to tell you, the Patriots did a great job.
14:02They had 41 puppies here, and 40 of them were adopted.
14:06So start with that.
14:08But I want to tell you, the play of the day, the play, right, right?
14:12The play of the day at practice was the first play of full-team drills.
14:16Drake May drops back, hits Stefan Diggs on a short crosser over the middle,
14:20and the fans that were here, more than 5,000 erupt in a big cheer.
14:25And so it was that connection that Drake May to Stefan Diggs on the first play
14:30that really got the energy up at practice.
14:33And then the two of them on the next full-team drill connected on the first play again.
14:39And May saying after practice that it's awesome to be able to throw to someone like Diggs.
14:43And I'd just add Kyle Williams, the rookie receiver, had one big catch on Christian Gonzalez,
14:49the second-team All-Pro.
14:50So a good start for him.
14:51And, Laura, if you'd indulge me for a second, it was around this time last week.
14:55I was in studio, and Booger was on the set remotely,
15:00and he so lovingly was pointing out how short I am.
15:04Boog, I just wanted you to know I made it to training camp undaunted.
15:08And, Boog, you might be interested to know this is what I bring with me.
15:12It's a step-down, all right?
15:15When I'm out in the field, it's easy.
15:17I just put it down.
15:19I can step up, Boog.
15:20You know, if it's Drake May, if it's Pop Douglas, I just stay on ground level.
15:24But when you're in the studio, Boog, it's a little bit harder.
15:28The studio tells all of our secrets.
15:30Boog, why are you bullying everybody?
15:32Come on, dude.
15:33I'm not bullying him, but guess what, Mike?
15:36I love that, Mike, the fact that the audience doesn't know.
15:38They don't need to know how the sausage is made.
15:40I love the fact that you're bringing your own props, Mike.
15:42Like, kudos to you.
15:43That's right.
15:44Mike Reese does it all.
15:45That's right.
15:46Got to be prepared, Boog.
15:47Mike, tell them, and don't tell my husband Josh,
15:50but tell them that I will adopt that puppy that's still left over.
15:53You said there's 41 puppies.
15:55They had 40 adopted.
15:56I want that extra one.
15:58All right.
15:58The Patriots, by the way, third easiest schedule according to ESPN Analytics in the NFL.
16:02So I think they could be set for a great season.
16:05New on NFL Live, we'll talk about the Giants a little bit.
16:07Their head coach, Brian Dable, spoke this morning about his plans
16:10for the Giants' week one starting quarterback.
16:13These guys will be out here competing, but Russell's our starter.
16:15Russell's had a really good spring.
16:17The other quarterbacks have as well.
16:19I like that room.
16:20I like the direction the room is headed.
16:22He's a guy who's done it for a long time.
16:23He's got a lot of experiences.
16:25He's been in a number of systems.
16:28He's played a lot of football.
16:29He's seen a lot of things.
16:30He's made a lot of adjustments.
16:32And I think there's a lot of good give and take in our quarterback room.
16:36I think you need to have that.
16:37Those are the guys that are playing behind center.
16:40And they have to be very comfortable with what we're asking them to do.
16:43And you certainly listen to those guys.
16:48All right.
16:48So Russ, officially QB1 for the Giants.
16:51Lewis, did Dable need to make this call now?
16:53Yeah, you know what, Laura?
16:58I think he did it simply so people don't continue to ask him about it,
17:03which is natural when you draft a quarterback in the first round.
17:06You're going to ask, well, you know, when's Jackson going to play?
17:09When's Jackson ready?
17:09How's Jackson doing?
17:10Is Jackson ready?
17:11Is Jackson going to be the starter?
17:12Is Jackson still competing?
17:14He's saying, well, look, I'll tell you what.
17:16Russ is starting.
17:17Now we'll take it from there.
17:19And so obviously this kind of like the story will write itself, right?
17:22If Russ continues to play well, then Jackson probably sits the bench for his rookie season.
17:28If the Giants are winning, Brian Dable gets a second crack at it
17:31as far as maybe developing Jackson the following year.
17:34And maybe it's a Kansas City type situation, right?
17:37When they drafted Patrick Mahomes and Alex Smith was the starter,
17:40had the best season of his career, went to the Pro Bowl.
17:43The next season they shipped him off and put Patrick in there.
17:45I think that's what everybody ideally is looking for.
17:48Obviously the New York Giants are trying to set it up that way.
17:51Hey, can we be good enough with Russ, lean on his veteran expertise,
17:56win enough games to where we can then develop this first-round quarterback down the road?
18:02Obviously it's risky.
18:03I wouldn't bet on it, but we'll see what happens.
18:08Yeah, and just to add to that, Lewis, I think that's a great point by you.
18:11He takes the questions and he pushes them all to the side.
18:14But as we saw in Seattle years ago, when they named Matt Flynn the starter,
18:18Russell Wilson came in and took the job over.
18:20Nobody ever said anything because we assumed it was going to be Matt Flynn.
18:23If you're in New York, I think we already knew Russell had the hand up.
18:28Follow the money.
18:29Russell is making team million this year.
18:30Jameis is making like three or four.
18:32And then you draft a rookie out of Ole Miss.
18:34So I think without him saying that, we kind of already knew Russell was in pole position,
18:40as Mike Tomlin said last year.
18:42And now it's up to Russ to go out each and every day and continue to stay there.
18:46But this is really no surprise.
18:47But whether it's Russell now, Jameis later, it doesn't matter.
18:51The future is Jackson Dart.
18:52And so everything that they're doing in that organization is to make sure that this year,
18:57at the end of this season, yeah, you want to go out and win.
18:59And I know Brian Dayball, they got to win.
19:01I get that.
19:02But at some point, the future of this organization is Jackson Dart.
19:05And they got to try to balance that fine line of winning now
19:08and preparing Jackson Dart for the future, Lindsay.
19:11I do love Lewis's impression of reporters and how we do our jobs.
19:15Is he going to start now?
19:16Is he going to start now the day after?
19:17Where is that competition at, right?
19:19Like, Lewis, you nailed it.
19:20That's exactly me.
19:22Ask all those coaches.
19:23They don't love it.
19:24But for that point, that point alone, this was a really smart move for Dayball to make.
19:29And just say Russell Wilson is the starter coming out of the gate.
19:32Like, look, he hasn't had the best couple seasons in the last few seasons,
19:34but he is still a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
19:38The other guy, Jackson Dart, obviously, Jameis Winston, the money alone,
19:41as Booker said, says he was going to be a backup guy.
19:44But Jackson Dart, as a rookie coming into the late first round,
19:48you can learn from Russell Wilson.
19:49You go in with Russell Wilson.
19:51He's an established starter.
19:52He knows how to lead a team.
19:54And if the day comes when he's not playing well, you can make the switch.
19:57And that, for a head coach who is coaching for his job,
20:00is a lot easier switch to make.
20:02Than it is to deal with a quarterback competition,
20:04that's really not much of a competition, perhaps out of the gate.
20:06Yeah, it's a good point.
20:07All right, coming up, a monumental decision looms over the commander.
20:10Live training camp in full swing for all 32 NFL teams.
20:13Let's get into some camp storylines.
20:15We're going to start with Terry McLaurin holding out of camp in Washington,
20:18looking for that new deal.
20:19His quarterback, Jaden Daniels, spoke on the matter earlier today.
20:23I mean, I would talk to Terry like if he was here, just checking up on him.
20:27But at the end of the day, that's just a relationship we have on and off the field.
20:31Do you think there's concern in the locker room about the situation,
20:33or just it's business in the NFL?
20:35It's just business in the NFL.
20:38You know, we know Terry's working.
20:40We don't really have to worry about him doing any of that.
20:43But, you know, at the end of the day, he's still one of our brothers.
20:47Louis, it seems like Jaden doesn't think it's that big of a deal that Terry's holding out.
20:50But do you?
20:53Yeah, I do, Laura.
20:55Look, I think every day missed is detrimental.
20:59Jaden Daniels is in his second year in the NFL.
21:01I know he's sitting up there, and you look at the guy, and you sit there, and you go,
21:04has this guy been playing about eight, nine years?
21:06Because he just looks so mature and composed and under control.
21:09But he's in his second year.
21:11And this is his number one wideout.
21:13And he needs the reps with him to continue to grow and become not just a Pro Bowl-level player,
21:19not just a guy who was knocking on the door of the Super Bowl,
21:22but a guy who can be an MVP candidate.
21:24They've knocked it out the park with him, keep his best people around him,
21:28get Terry in there, agree on a contract so they can continue to grow.
21:31It's an exciting time in Washington.
21:33You don't want to derail that train in any way.
21:35Yeah, I agree.
21:36McLaurin, way too important to that team.
21:37Check out this tweet from our Commanders reporter, John Kine.
21:40Seems like all still good at Commanders camp today.
21:42Jaden Daniels' first pass in 11-on-11 dropped an over-the-shoulder dime to Devo Samuel on a slot fade.
21:48Tyler Owens right there, but the throw beat him.
21:50So good stuff out of that Commanders offense.
21:52All right, another camp storyline involves Matthew Stafford and the Rams.
21:55Lindsay, what's the latest on Stafford as the Rams camp opens up?
21:59Yeah, sure.
22:00Earlier last month, Matthew Stafford was in Hawaii gripping it, ripping it, playing some golf,
22:04but reports to training camp has a sore back.
22:07So I'm told that he will be off to the side doing some work with trainers,
22:11and then it'll be kind of a modified entrance into those practice drills.
22:15The Rams, though, really aren't concerned.
22:17When I first heard this was concerned, 37 years old and a back issue.
22:20How does that get better as you ramp up?
22:21But they have told me do not be concerned for Matthew Stafford.
22:25They expect that when the season comes, he'll be ready to go.
22:27And in fact, even if they were starting the season tomorrow,
22:29they said he wouldn't be on any sort of injury report and he'd be in there.
22:32So they're just using a caution with their 37-year-old, 17-year-old veteran quarterback.
22:37That makes me feel better, that he would play if the season started today like it.
22:39All right, we can't have camp storylines and not include the Cowboys.
22:42Jerry Jones and Micah Parsons had a fun little back and forth this week
22:46regarding Parsons' looming contract extension.
22:48There's nothing new about what we're talking about here today relative to contracts.
22:54That's been going on a long time.
22:56Now, you say, well, if you don't get him in, are you going to lose the first two games
23:00and then go on to win the Super Bowl?
23:02Well, we'll take that.
23:03Just because we signed him doesn't mean we're going to have him.
23:05He was hurt six games last year.
23:07We've signed, I remember signing a player for the highest paid at the position in the league,
23:11and he got knocked out two-thirds of the year, Dak Prescott.
23:15When you go around the league and you see these other teams taking care of their best guys,
23:19I see TJ got taken care of, you know, Max got taken care of, Miles got taken care of,
23:25and he got two years left on his deal.
23:27So if they don't want me here, they don't want me here.
23:29I'll go about my business.
23:30I understand the nature of the business.
23:33Like I said, as long as I'm here and under contract,
23:36I'm going to do what I have to do to perform at the highest level.
23:38But if this is the end, this is the end.
23:41Woo, you notice that hype man Trayvon Diggs was next to him.
23:44Look, what do you make of all this in Dallas?
23:47Well, it's unfortunate, but here's the crazy part.
23:50I think this thing, if it's going to end, it's going to end on Jerry's term.
23:54Nobody's talking about this.
23:55He's playing on the fifth-year option this year, Laura,
23:57but they can actually franchise in the next two years.
24:00They control his rights, not only this year, but for two more years.
24:03So any deal that's done right now is probably going to be a team-friendly deal,
24:07and nobody is mentioning that right now.
24:08And I think if you're Micah, he talks about if this is the end,
24:11well, the Cowboys control the end because they have your rights,
24:14not only this year, but for the next two more if they want to franchise you.
24:17Yeah, man.
24:18Lindsey, you're jumping into that fray in just a couple days.
24:21You're headed to Oxnard after you leave us here in Bristol,
24:23and we're going to be talking all about the Cowboys on Saturday
24:25with our Back Together weekend special on ESPN and ABC.
24:28But you were in Dallas last year when Dak was awaiting the new deal.
24:31What did you learn from that situation that may inform this one?
24:34Laura, I can't wait to get back there because it is so fun being a reporter
24:37at the Cowboys camp because it's unlike any other camp you'll go to
24:41because there's Jerry talking over there, and then Jerry says something,
24:44and then you go to the player, and they let the players talk, right?
24:46We see Micah Parsons.
24:47He's in the middle of a contract situation,
24:49and he is out there talking with reporters.
24:51But this is what the Cowboys do.
24:53This is what they embrace every single year.
24:55Dak, it was the same thing a year ago.
24:57Walk up to Jerry.
24:58Hey, Jerry, when's this going to end?
24:59Oh, he's not concerned about it.
25:01And so you take this situation, and Jerry's unbothered by it.
25:05Micah, obviously, a little more.
25:06He needs his money.
25:07He deserves his money.
25:08But the one thing that tends to be the case around there
25:11is that everybody knows come time for the season, the deals do get done.
25:16Players do get paid.
25:17It's just this entire circus vibe, for lack of a better term,
25:21when you go to training camp there, and that's what they love about the Cowboys.
25:25That's what Jerry loves about his Cowboys.
25:30Yeah, you know, I'm sure, Lindsay, I mean, for reporters, it's their dream.
25:36And you're sitting there going, look, I'm getting sound bites everywhere.
25:39But when you're just talking about, like, from a pure football standpoint,
25:42like, this is just dumb.
25:44Like, this whole thing just feels so dumb and unnecessary and manufactured.
25:49Like, let me ask you this.
25:50Why, who talks about the fact that, well, you know what,
25:54I made a quarterback the highest paid player in the league, and what happened?
25:58He went out there and got hurt.
25:59Like, Dak tried to get hurt.
26:00Like, it's football.
26:03Of course there are risks associated.
26:05Like, why are you even bringing that up as a way to kind of, like, say, hey, look,
26:09these are some of the reasons why I kind of, like, maybe keep my cash, you know,
26:13in my pocket when I have to pay these guys because, like, I'm worried about them getting hurt.
26:17Well, no kidding.
26:19It happens.
26:20You know, so that means that now you're using that, you know, at the same time when you're
26:28really talking about Micah and people are asking you, why haven't you struck a long-term deal
26:31with him?
26:32And why is one of the most explosive, game-changing players in the league who plays one of the most
26:38impactful positions in the league literally having a press conference with reporters on
26:43the field talking about the fact that if they don't want me here, if this is the end,
26:48I mean, are you kidding me?
26:52Like, what is that?
26:54Like, why is that even happening?
26:55Why would, why are we talking about this with Micah Parsons?
26:59Only because the owner has created this kind of situation, which leads me to believe this.
27:04For a guy who has won Super Bowls already, is that really what your number one priority
27:09is?
27:10Because all the other teams that are winning Super Bowls now, they don't do this.
27:13And I don't remember this kind of thing happening back in the days when Jimmy Johnson and Michael
27:18Irvin and the guys were there.
27:18I just don't remember this kind of thing.
27:20So I don't get any of this.
27:23None of it makes sense.
27:24Go off, Lou.
27:28Yeah, no, I think Lou's right.
27:30Like, nobody understands it because every financial advantage that you get as a team happens when
27:34you pay the players earlier.
27:36Just look at what Philadelphia's done.
27:37They draft, they identify, they pay their guys, and they get all the cap savings.
27:40But Jerry has decided, not once, not twice, he did it with Dak, did it with CD, now he's
27:46doing it again with Micah.
27:47Like, this is the way he does business.
27:48And when you're a billionaire and you're on the team, you can do it your own way, regardless
27:52of whether we like it or not.
27:53I just think that we have to open our mind up because we automatically assume, we say
27:58this every time, and so far it's happened, he's going to pay him.
28:01He's going to pay him.
28:02I just throw the question out there, guys.
28:04What if they don't?
28:05What if they start the season and Micah Parsons has not been paid?
28:09Like, he can't just quit.
28:11He can hold out, but he's going to get fined.
28:13Like, the CBA is set up in the owner's advantage right now, where if you're Micah Parsons and
28:18you're going into your fifth year with those two franchise tags looming, like, you got
28:22to show up and play or else you're going to cost yourselves a lot of money.
28:25So, I just think that at some point, we can't just automatically assume, just because
28:30it's happened in the past, that Jerry's just going to pony up.
28:33For whatever reason, he has decided not to.
28:35Hopefully, that doesn't continue.
28:37Hopefully, it doesn't happen because I think Micah deserves his money.
28:40Hopefully, that is not the case, right?
28:41Hopefully, as we all laugh about this, Micah Parsons does get the money he's earned and
28:46deserves.
28:47But with Jerry, this thing has just shifted into pure entertainment, and I think that's
28:52what Jerry really kind of almost embraces when you're out there, is that he has had some
28:56of these ideas with the NFL that have led to more of an entertainment league.
29:00Obviously, most entertaining would be if the Cowboys could just go back and win a Super
29:04Bowl.
29:04Yeah, he would love that entertainment.
29:06Look, you like what my lot is saying there?
29:09Yeah, I do.
29:10More importantly, I love his accent.
29:12I wish I could get that accent.
29:13I'd be dangerous.
29:14But, I mean, for him, like, he's right.
29:16Like, when you go out, last year's over with.
29:18This is a new season.
29:19You've got to come out, and you've got to put this team together and put your stamp on
29:23this year.
29:23So, yeah, I agree with what he says.
29:25I like it, but I love the accent even more.
29:28Look, can you try the accent real fast for me?
29:29No, I cannot do that.
29:32I'm not going to disgrace that.
29:34Well, I put you back down into the floor there because you wouldn't do it.
29:37All right, let's go to Vegas, where their new quarterback, Geno Smith, met with the media
29:41moments ago.
29:43Pete doesn't seem different at all.
29:45I'm pretty sure he's learned a lot.
29:47That's just the way that he is.
29:48He's always trying to improve.
29:49And I think, you know, for me as, you know, just a player, just seeing him, man, it's just
29:53great to see the energy that he continues to bring every single day.
29:56Like, our first team meeting was just jacked up.
29:58And, you know, guys are, I mean, just, you know, losing their minds in there.
30:01But, you know, Pete, he loves it.
30:03And I think, you know, he's only going to continue to get better as a coach because that's his
30:07mindset.
30:07That's the way he works.
30:08All right, Kaelin Kaler, boots on the ground in Vegas.
30:13Kaelin, what did you see from day one of Raiders practice?
30:17Well, Laura, I saw a 73-year-old Pete Carroll bouncing around the practice field with more
30:22energy than some of the rookies out there.
30:25He even was wearing gloves as if he was a wide receiver and playing catch with some of
30:29the coaches.
30:30It was really something to behold.
30:31And as Geno said, this is the same Pete Carroll that we saw last when he was with the Seattle
30:36Seahawks.
30:37Wide receiver Jacoby Myers said his energy is contagious, and the players can feel that.
30:44And Pete himself is going to win.
30:46He wants to win this year.
30:48This is a Raiders team that won four games last season, none in the division.
30:53And Pete has said publicly many times he wants to win a bunch of games because he's used to
30:57winning, as he said, 10 games a year for the last 20 seasons.
31:02He was almost right on that stat.
31:04We did the math.
31:05We did look it up.
31:06And in 18 NFL seasons, Pete Carroll has won nine or more games 13 times.
31:12So he was really close on that one.
31:14And Patrick Graham, the defensive coordinator, I had a chance to speak with him.
31:18And he said this spring, the players and staff have had more fun as a group than ever in
31:23his time here.
31:24And that's because of Pete Carroll.
31:25So the question is, will that fun lead to wins?
31:31Exactly.
31:32That's what we're all waiting to find out.
31:33It seems like it's trending that direction, though.
31:35Thanks so much to Kalen.
31:36The Raiders seeking their first division title since 2002.
31:40Let's go to Miami next.
31:41We're Dolphins quarterback, Tua Tunga-Vailoa.
31:42Talk today about building his relationship with wideout Tyreek Hill.
31:46I would say we're still continuing to do that.
31:49But it's not just with me.
31:50It's with a lot of the guys.
31:52I'm not the only one that heard that.
31:54You guys aren't the only people that heard that.
31:56You know, a lot of people that follow football, that follow the Miami Dolphins, that follow
32:01Tyreek, that are fans of his.
32:03Everyone has seen that.
32:04So when you say something like that, you don't just come back from that with, hey, my bad.
32:11You know, you got to work that relationship up.
32:13You got to build everything up again.
32:15And it's still a work in progress, not just for me, but for everybody.
32:18Some people, they're in the spotlight, you know, and their deals get pushed out more than
32:21some others.
32:22You just got to cut them some grace.
32:24I mean, that's our teammate.
32:25You know, we love them.
32:26But as a person, if you get to know them, I think you'd love them, too.
32:30I feel like that was extremely honest out of Tua.
32:33But, Lewis, we've spent some time around the Dolphins covering games on Monday Night
32:36Football.
32:37Can they get back on track this year, especially knowing just kind of all these things that
32:41are brewing there, right?
32:45Yeah, Laura, this is such a nondescript team to me in terms of, like, what exactly is the
32:51personality of this football team?
32:53Who is the guy who is kind of like, you know, the tip of the spear as far as that personality?
32:58Who do they really want to be?
32:59I mean, this is a team that's built kind of like outside in, right?
33:03They have a lot of speed and stuff on the perimeter.
33:05Mike likes to throw the football around, you know, with Tua.
33:08They like to kind of hit fast and really utilize all of the athleticism that they have.
33:14But they need to be more physical.
33:15They need to be more, have more of an attitude.
33:18They need to have more of a college-like atmosphere where they're all pulling in the same direction.
33:22This season can go many different ways for this football team.
33:25I'm as intrigued as anyone.
33:26Yeah, I can't wait to see how they rebuild their relationship with Tyreek, too.
33:31It's fascinating stuff there.
33:32Let's go to Green Bay, where quarterback Jordan Love arrived to Packers camp the only way they know how to, by bike.
33:40There he is.
33:41You know, casual.
33:42Does he have a basket on the front of that thing with, like, a little...
33:45Wait.
33:46That's funny.
33:47Also, that's a small bike for him.
33:51We're going to keep watching this on loop.
33:52No, I'm kidding.
33:52We're going to go to Packers head coach Pat LaFleur.
33:54He was asked about the team's playoff hopes.
33:57Yeah, we're capable of doing some really good things, but we've got to be willing to do the work.
34:03And that was pretty much the message to the team.
34:05Are you willing to do all the little things that it takes?
34:09Because it takes a lot to get even to that point to reach the postseason.
34:15It takes a lot to...
34:16We've got a really tough division.
34:18We've got a really tough schedule.
34:19And that's the National Football League.
34:22So, but you've got to do all the little things.
34:26And then, you know, you've always got to have a little luck on your side in terms of staying healthy throughout the course of the season.
34:33That luck part of it's really important.
34:35But, Lindsay, do you think that this Packers team is ready for a playoff push?
34:38Look, I think they are absolutely ready.
34:39They've been the second youngest team in the NFL the last two seasons.
34:43Jordan Love's first two seasons.
34:44As a starter, they made it to the playoffs.
34:46Now, the key for this group is to really figure out what's that next little key to winning those games and advancing.
34:53Jordan Love's going to get some new receivers this season.
34:56I know you didn't get a lot of help from those guys throughout.
34:58One of the most inconsistent groups in the NFL last season.
35:01But you heard Matt LaFleur there say that one of the keys is just kind of learning how to be pro still.
35:07Still a young group.
35:07There's time, but they need to get over that hump.
35:09All right.
35:10Another team still looking to get over a hump.
35:11The Ravens.
35:12They're facing familiar questions after another playoff heartbreak.
35:15Unfortunately, can they fix what went wrong?
