01:37And you guys shot this in Canada, is that right?
01:40We shot in Canada, we shot in Mexico, and we shot in Iceland.
01:43So we went to three different locations across the world.
01:45All over the world.

01:47I mean, as actors, is that, like, a massive perk of the job,
01:49getting to go to all these places and travel?
01:51Yeah.
01:52You got to go to all of them.
01:53I had never been to Canada.
01:54I'd never been to Iceland.
01:55I'd never been to Mexico.
01:56So it was like, yeah, you get to see all these amazing places
01:59and go to these amazing things.

02:03Like, it's your job to go to these places.

02:12But then you were also in the 1700s.

02:18So was everything kind of stripped back to be in that period?
02:21Yeah.
02:22I mean, costume wise.
02:23Yeah, they definitely made the world period, periody-esque
02:27and 1800s-esque.

02:29Definitely costume, makeup and hair as well for some other characters.
02:33They built a whole world for us that was very much 1800s.

02:38And what was it for you both that made you want to get involved in this?
02:40Because I wasn't aware of the novel before this.
02:42But now, obviously, I want to go and read the book.
02:44You know what's interesting?
02:45I want to hear how you answer this question.
02:47Because early in my career, I was like,
02:49why do I want to be involved with it?
02:50Because I auditioned and I booked it.
02:52Like, that would be my answer.

02:57Because I got the part.

02:59It's a large part.
03:00But I do think, I guess, why I stayed.

03:05Why I was, like, really joyous to do it was because it was a story that was so epic.
03:09Like, the journey and the adventure was so massive.
03:12And the character had gone and went through, like, so much to get to where he was.
03:17You know, there's love in there.
03:18There's faith.
03:19There's perseverance.
03:20There's, like, this whimsical element, fantastical element.
03:23It's just, like, a story that's larger than life.
03:26So, of course, when I saw the audition, I was like, do you know what it was?
03:29I was like, I'm not going to get that.
03:30I'm not going to get that, you know?
03:32And then it happened.
03:33And then I just had the best time of my life, so.
03:35You were great.
03:36And I met this guy.
03:37He's great.
03:38He's great.
03:39I mean, similar, I echo everything that Ernest just said.
03:41And just with intentionality, like, these stories of whimsy, of fantasy, et cetera,
03:46don't typically feature a young black boy born into captivity, right?
03:52They tend to be a bit more downtrodden in terms of how they're told.
03:55And I wasn't interested in telling a story about black pain or black trauma.
03:59I was interested in telling a story about black joy and seeing what kind of reverberations
04:05that type of imagery has in the world.
04:07So, we'll find out soon.
04:09Oh, I just got goosebumps there.
04:11Honestly.
04:12And your character is kind of mentored by Sterling's character in this.
04:17Is that, is art imitating life in real life?
04:19Is he a mentor?
04:20Yeah.
04:21Art imitating life, life imitating art, all that kind of stuff.
04:24I was saying, like, I feel like it's one of those things where it naturally just happened.
04:29Obviously, this was all a very new experience for me.
04:32And, you know, Sterling was wearing two hats.
04:34And he was an actor and producer.
04:36And so, every time he was on set, he kind of set the tone of this, like, positive, vibrant,
04:43and, like, lovely, like, set space filled with, like, just, just, just positivity, man.
04:48That's the best way I can put it.
04:50Um, just the questions I'd ask him about life, about set life, and, and, of course, acting in general.
04:55It was a gift.
04:56So, definitely, you know, Medwin is a mentor to Wash, but it's, it's the same off camera as well.
05:02I would say art imitating life as well, or life imitating art.
05:06Like, I think I learned as much from Ernest as, as, as, as, it's a circular relationship.
05:11For sure.
05:12Because, uh, he's such a pure young man, um, who has, like, the best of intentions
05:20with every interaction that he has with another human being.
05:23Uh, and just sort of reminded me, when I see him, I'm reminded of what goodness looks like.
05:29Um, and it's always a joy to be in the presence of.

05:33You know, this has really uplifted me.
