At the 'Freakier Friday' premiere, Jamie Lee Curtis chats with THR and reveals how she almost left Hollywood before the original film. Plus, she describes why it was important for her to keep a strong bond with her co-star Lindsay Lohan and reveals what it was like seeing her become a mom.
00:00I was looking up your interviews from when you did the first movie in 2003 and you were saying how right before that film you were thinking maybe it was time for you to leave Hollywood.
00:07I think that every I've actually thought that for decades because I am the daughter of Hollywood actors and I watched them lose the opportunities to do the work they loved.
00:24I watched it and I am highly aware that that cliff is coming comes for everybody and so I've always thought I'd rather do an Irish exit and kind of cut out before you don't ask me anymore that I then have the power not you because I watched my parents want it and not get it and that's heartbreaking.
00:51That totally makes sense but I mean these past 22 years since the first film you've won an Oscar, an Emmy.
00:56I understand. I am younger today than I was 22 years ago.
01:01Way younger.
01:03I love that. What would 22 years ago, 2003 Jamie, think of just the past 22 years of your career?
01:09Well she wouldn't have believed they would have ever happened because she would have been trying to get out before they stopped asking her and that's just serendipity, that's just good fortune, that's just dumb luck.
01:21That's, you know, life hinging on a couple seconds I never saw coming and then my life pivots and changes and now I'm standing here 22 years later headlining a movie.
01:36And I love that through it all you and Lindsay have stayed close and you've been in her life.
01:39Why was it important for you to continue to be there for her in that way?
01:42Because show business is transactional and I want young people to understand that people don't want anything from them.
01:51And when you work with a young actor like Lindsay who is 15, I said to her from day one, I want nothing from you except your own peace and serenity and I will, I am safe.
02:04Like I'm, I'm a home base.
02:07I, I don't want anything.
02:08I'm not going to ask you to come to anything.
02:10I don't want, I mean I ask her now to sign stuff for Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
02:14But other than that, I don't, I don't want her to feel transactional with me.
02:20I want her to feel loved.
02:22And that's what she says about you, that you're one of her safe people.
02:24As somebody who's watched her grow, what's the sort of role you'd love to see her take on next?
