00:00Which European countries have the worst working conditions?
00:06A French economist recently slammed working conditions in France on live TV, sparking debate.
00:13France completely descoçou no nível de condições de trabalho.
00:16Ela é 36ª, boa noite com Albania, em termos de condições de trabalho.
00:20It prompted a flood of reactions on social media.
00:23The economist bases his conclusion on this study from 2021 by Eurofound, an EU agency,
00:30which analyzes labor conditions in 36 European countries.
00:34The methodology is robust and the results are considered credible.
00:38It includes a job quality index by country,
00:42which shows that more workers in France cited extremely strained or highly strained conditions
00:48than in most other countries.
00:50Only in Serbia, Montenegro, Slovakia and Poland
00:53do more workers have extremely or highly strained conditions, according to the findings.
00:59If we also consider those who cited moderately strained conditions,
01:03France ranks penultimately, with only Slovakia scoring worse
01:07and Albania faring slightly better.
01:10So while this economist's claim that France ranks among the worst countries in Europe is true,
01:15it's not accurate to say France ranks 36th out of 36 countries with Albania.
01:22The index takes into account things like unsocial hours, work intensity, job insecurity
01:27and also physical risks.
01:30The issue of precarious working conditions has recently come to the fore in France
01:34after five youngsters aged between 15 and 19
01:37were killed in the workplace in just the past two and a half months.
01:42The latest available data does suggest that after Malta,
01:47France fares worse among EU countries in terms of fatal accidents in the workplace.
