We speak with Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Strategy, Regeneration and Policy at The Spirit Run Distillery & Bar launch in Derby Market Hall.
Transcript
00:00The space for Spirit Run is just beautiful. I walked in for the first time today and my jaw was to the floor because, wow, this is the kind of space that I want to have a cocktail in for sure.
00:11So what do you think Spirit Run will add to the diary market hall?
00:15Oh, it adds class. It adds a bit of a reason to come here for something other than the food offer and the shopping offer. And although we've got some great bars already, this is in another world. It's just classy and it doesn't matter what time of year it is. If it's warm outside, you can sit outside. If it's cold, you'll be inside and really enjoy the ambiance.
00:43So how does it feel to see the wider Derby market hall flourishing?
00:50It fills me with pride, honestly. It feels like my baby because it's such a beautiful building. It makes me feel emotional, as it does many people when I see it.
01:03And it's so intrinsically Derby as well. So the building is wonderful. The fact that we've made it so localised, that we're celebrating the best of Derbyshire and Derby.
01:16And that's what the Spirit Run embodies as well. They literally just come from down the road at Darling Abbey. So you can't get any more local than that.
01:25I think nowadays as well, when provenance matters, you want to know where things have come from on the food front. It's really, really handy.
01:33I think another lady was speaking about how the gin is going to be made here as well. That's so exciting.
01:38Yeah, and you can see it being made as well. You know, these beautiful copper stills, dripping gin out as you're sat there sipping it.
01:46It's really exciting. It's just something really unique and special. So yeah, I think a lot of people are going to enjoy this space.
01:53Do you have any on the menu? What are you going to be ordering? Do you know yet?
01:58Well, it's got to have gin in it, obviously. But I did spot that there is a cocktail called the Derbyshire No. 2.
02:05So, you know, when in Derbyshire, you've just got to, haven't you?
02:08We've still got a lot to do. We've still got stalls to fill and there's some news coming on that very soon.
02:14Some very exciting news. This is the next step, you know, and you can spill inside, outside towards the Brook Square.
02:21You can hear they're still working on it as fast as they can.
02:25But in August, we will be opening the square up for, you know, and celebrating that, the final piece in the jigsaw.
02:32So what would you say to someone who is a bit unsure about coming here?
02:36What are you unsure about? I mean, you've got everything, absolutely everything in one building here.
02:44You know, you can come and spend a whole weekend here in Derby and you would spend half of it in the market hall.
02:49And what we've seen since it opened is people coming in and out and in again, you know, and using it several times a day because it's just that kind of space where you can meet someone, you can have a bit of shopping, you come back later for lunch, you know, you go around Derby, do something else and then come back again in the evening for a drink.
03:06You know, so there's just, it's just got that offer and it's like, it's like the heart of the city, you know, the absolute anchor.
03:13You can have like breakfast, lunch, dinner, shopping, you know, once you're here, it's a bit difficult to leave, I imagine.
03:19And I have made a promise to myself, so it would be great if other people did the same thing.
03:23I've made a promise that I will buy all of my birthday presents from the market hall.
03:27Right.
03:27So, so far I've gone through three birthdays and all of those presents have come from here.
03:32Lucky then.
