00:00Il 24 Hours of Le Mans è per costruzzi, meccaniche e guidi, e prima l'action inizia,
00:09il cento di cento di cento di cento di spectatori move in posizione in order to miss nulla.
00:15Juste a l'anno, Ford è stato motivato a cercare di scuderia e ferrari.
00:21Two works Fords are entered, the one of Miles of McLaren and the two of Hill and Eamon.
00:25Seven litres, almost 500hp, never before have we seen such power under the bonnet.
00:32Up against the Americans, Ferrari are major favourites.
00:35They're here aiming for a sixth consecutive victory in the Saat, for that they've pitched
00:39up with 250 LM's, 330 P2's and 365 P1's, generally with the famous V12 engines.
00:47They can also count on star drivers such as Pedro Rodriguez, Joe Bonnier and Lorenzo Bandini.
00:55Only one Maserati takes the start, the eight entered by Colonel John Simone, the official
01:08exclusive importer of the brand.
01:10It's a miracle it's here as it was put together and got up to speed in only 35 days.
01:16This year Alpine Renault again represents French construction and the 33rd edition sees the
01:21presence of French state TV and radio ORTF.
01:28The crowd, encouraged by the lovely weather, invade the circuit.
01:31The best spots are right opposite the pits and the cars and drivers are starting to be
01:35placed for the traditional Le Mans star.
01:38For two, Phil Hill and Chris Eamon is on pole thanks to a lap at an average of 227 km an
01:45hour.
01:4624 hours before the winners, French champions do a lap of honour like skier Marielle Gretschel
01:50here at this great event.
01:55Just like at the start of the 100m dash, the drivers are ready.
01:59Away they go.
02:00Monsieur Maurice Herzog, the Under-Secretary for Sport and Youth has given the start of the
02:04third edition of the 24 hours of Le Mans.
02:07The 51 competitors move into action and the Fords have made the best start here, the two
02:12in front of the 7 and the 1.
02:17A peloton that's closely bunched but not for very long.
02:33the peloton gets stretched out over the 13km of the circuit.
02:43The first time through Mulsanne, two Fords still lead, that of McLaren and Miles, ahead
02:46of the two of Eamon and Hill, third now filled by the Ferrari 20 of Parkes and Guichet that
02:51manage to get the better of the Ford GT40 No. 7.
02:54The Ferrari 19 of Certis and Scarf Yachty, a champion in 63 with Bandini, completes the top
02:595.
03:00Behind an AC Cobra is caught out on the corner, precious seconds lost for Johnson and Payne
03:05and for the Porsche 38 to Duez and Koguen.
03:10The first cars go past the stands and the Fords of Miles and McLaren and Hill and Eamon lead
03:15from the Ferraris of Certis and Scarf Yachty and Guichet and Parkes.
03:19Already the Ford Ferrari battle has been launched.
03:26McLaren is still leading and tapping out a ferocious pace in front of another Ford, that
03:30driven by Chris Eamon.
03:32Ferrari is far back.
03:33On lap 4, Eamon is clocked at 343.8 at 216 kilometres an hour, the official lap record
03:40has been pulverised.
03:41But then McLaren reclaims the lead, the Ferraris are 40 seconds behind, the race is taken on
03:45the air of a Grand Prix, but a Grand Prix is ten times shorter.
03:49The crazy pace at the start means the machines and drivers suffer.
03:53Look at this failed stop from Joe Schlesser.
03:55The Frenchman, teamed up with Alan Grant in the Shelby Cobra 12, is the victim of a steering
04:00problem.
04:01The Franco-American duo have to abandon after only 80 minutes of racing.
04:06At the front, the Fords continue to power on.
04:18The Ferraris are bunched together, waiting to make the most of any mishaps for the formidable
04:22American cars.
04:24On the long Unodier straight, the quickest go at 300 kilometres an hour, almost 80 metres
04:28a second.
04:34McLaren beats the lap record at 219 kilometres an hour.
04:37The pace imposed by the leading Fords is incredible.
04:40The cars really suffer, and the Elva BMW will have to abandon.
04:46circumstances, identical consequences.
04:48Theodore Zecoli is into the Le Mans-Saint and will go no further.
04:5344 competitors still left in despite the ferocious pace, but a little after 6 in the evening,
05:02the Ford prototypes begin to hit wheel trouble.
05:05Amon spends a long time in the pits.
05:07Bondurant abandons McLaren too.
05:09It's carnage.
05:11Phil Hill, in the two, in a bravura act before giving away laps at nearly 223 kilometres an
05:16hour.
05:17It's all gone wrong, though, for the American cars.
05:24Ferrari's couldn't have asked for anything more.
05:26After four hours of racing, the situation is clear at the front.
05:31Four Italian prototypes lead with the 19 ahead of the 20, the 17 and the 22 shared by Bandini
05:36and Biscaldi, a car that comes into the pits.
05:39Lorenzo Bandini gets out of the cockpit of the 275 P2 with a 3.3-litre engine before proffering
05:45a few words of advice to his young teammate.
05:52A smooth pit stop for Ferrari, and the man from Milan, Biscaldi, can calmly head back out.
06:01Now the 21 comes in to refuel the Ferrari 250 LM of Gregory and Rint.
06:05One is American, the other Austrian.
06:07Mastin Gregory is well known, while Rint is a newcomer, but a talented newcomer.
06:12This year he took a brilliant third place at the Grand Prix of Poe in Formula 2, but now
06:16the ambitions of Rint and Gregory are modest because they're more than 10 laps down.
06:25Fans are delighted.
06:26They came here to witness a big battle, and that is what has ensued.
06:30In the village of the 24 hours of Le Mans there's something for every taste, and on this
06:34Saturday, June 19th, concerts are on the programme.
06:40Fans continue to go round and round with their lights on, making the spectacle all the more
06:44impressive.
06:47While the sun takes its time to rise, it's the red cars dominating, five Ferraris in the
06:51leading positions.
06:52The average speed has gone down a lot, but is still more than 196 kilometres an hour.
07:00The Ferrari 26 of Dumais and Gosselin leads, but the 21 is pushing hard.
07:05Too hard, in fact.
07:06Gregory and Rint are two laps down, the win hasn't been decided yet.
07:10One thing is sure though, Ferrari and the history of the 24 hours of Le Mans are inextricably
07:15linked.
07:16The Scuderia heading for an eighth success in the Saad.
07:22Porsche of Cock and Fishbacker does surprisingly well, sixth on distance and first in the GT 2L category.
07:29There are only 16 cars left.
07:31It's such a tough race, but some are doing extremely well, like the Porsche 32, fifth overall.
07:37Refuelling for the 330 P220 of Guichet and Parkes, the Frenchman won last year, teamed up with
07:43Baccarella.
07:44Parkes is a fine driver.
07:45It's one of the best line-ups you could think of, but they can only do what their machines
07:49allow them to do, and their machine has let them down.
07:52Reduced to a single gear, fifth, they have to drop out with only an hour left to hold on.
07:58Last refuelling for young Pedro Rodriguez, who will succeed in his aim of finishing the
08:0324 hours of Le Mans.
08:10A 33rd edition that lives up to all its promise because the leading teams fight it out for
08:15victory.
08:16Gregory and Rint in their prototype 3.3-litre lead from the Franco-Belgian duo Dumais and
08:21Gosselin, who blew a tyre following a spin, they had to settle for second place.
08:27The Italian flags fly high in the Le Mans skies, proof of the dominance of Ferrari.
08:31Dumais and Gosselin really unlucky, finishing second then, while the big winners are Jochen
08:36Rint and Mastin Gregory in their 250 LM21.
08:40It was uncertain right down to the last minute, but this time there would be no bad surprises
08:45for the North American racing team, as they won the 33rd edition of the 24 hours of Le
08:49Le Mans.
08:50Three Ferraris in the top three places.
09:02Behind them the Porsche of Linga and Noca finishes fourth and is first on the index of performance.
09:07Only 14 cars of the 51 that started manage to make the finish.
09:11Once again Le Mans confirms its reputation as an unforgiving race.
09:15The race of truth again living up to its title as the Grand Prix d'Endurance of 24 hours.
09:20It's time for flowers and ovations for the winners and don't forget all those who worked so hard
09:26in the background in order for this to happen, in order for the car to be reliable.
09:31Bravo to Mastin Gregory and Jochen Rint for this success that has no equivalent anywhere in
09:36the world.
09:37Congratulations too to Linga and Noca first on the index.
09:43Many try and few manage to make it through to win.
09:46And all deserve our congratulations as 1965 was an epic addition.
