02:04third edition of the 24 hours of Le Mans.

02:07The 51 competitors move into action and the Fords have made the best start here, the two

02:12in front of the 7 and the 1.

02:17A peloton that's closely bunched but not for very long.

02:33the peloton gets stretched out over the 13km of the circuit.

02:43The first time through Mulsanne, two Fords still lead, that of McLaren and Miles, ahead

02:46of the two of Eamon and Hill, third now filled by the Ferrari 20 of Parkes and Guichet that

02:51manage to get the better of the Ford GT40 No. 7.

02:54The Ferrari 19 of Certis and Scarf Yachty, a champion in 63 with Bandini, completes the top

03:00Behind an AC Cobra is caught out on the corner, precious seconds lost for Johnson and Payne

03:10The first cars go past the stands and the Fords of Miles and McLaren and Hill and Eamon lead

06:01Now the 21 comes in to refuel the Ferrari 250 LM of Gregory and Rint.

06:05One is American, the other Austrian.

06:07Mastin Gregory is well known, while Rint is a newcomer, but a talented newcomer.

06:12This year he took a brilliant third place at the Grand Prix of Poe in Formula 2, but now

06:16the ambitions of Rint and Gregory are modest because they're more than 10 laps down.

06:25Fans are delighted.

06:26They came here to witness a big battle, and that is what has ensued.

06:30In the village of the 24 hours of Le Mans there's something for every taste, and on this

06:34Saturday, June 19th, concerts are on the programme.

06:40Fans continue to go round and round with their lights on, making the spectacle all the more

06:44impressive.

06:47While the sun takes its time to rise, it's the red cars dominating, five Ferraris in the

06:51leading positions.

06:52The average speed has gone down a lot, but is still more than 196 kilometres an hour.

07:00The Ferrari 26 of Dumais and Gosselin leads, but the 21 is pushing hard.

07:05Too hard, in fact.

07:06Gregory and Rint are two laps down, the win hasn't been decided yet.

07:10One thing is sure though, Ferrari and the history of the 24 hours of Le Mans are inextricably

07:15linked.

07:16The Scuderia heading for an eighth success in the Saad.

07:22Porsche of Cock and Fishbacker does surprisingly well, sixth on distance and first in the GT 2L category.

07:29There are only 16 cars left.

07:31It's such a tough race, but some are doing extremely well, like the Porsche 32, fifth overall.

07:37Refuelling for the 330 P220 of Guichet and Parkes, the Frenchman won last year, teamed up with

07:43Baccarella.

07:44Parkes is a fine driver.

07:45It's one of the best line-ups you could think of, but they can only do what their machines

07:49allow them to do, and their machine has let them down.

07:52Reduced to a single gear, fifth, they have to drop out with only an hour left to hold on.

07:58Last refuelling for young Pedro Rodriguez, who will succeed in his aim of finishing the

08:0324 hours of Le Mans.

08:10A 33rd edition that lives up to all its promise because the leading teams fight it out for

08:15victory.

08:16Gregory and Rint in their prototype 3.3-litre lead from the Franco-Belgian duo Dumais and

08:21Gosselin, who blew a tyre following a spin, they had to settle for second place.

08:27The Italian flags fly high in the Le Mans skies, proof of the dominance of Ferrari.

08:31Dumais and Gosselin really unlucky, finishing second then, while the big winners are Jochen

08:36Rint and Mastin Gregory in their 250 LM21.

08:40It was uncertain right down to the last minute, but this time there would be no bad surprises

08:45for the North American racing team, as they won the 33rd edition of the 24 hours of Le

08:49Le Mans.

08:50Three Ferraris in the top three places.

09:02Behind them the Porsche of Linga and Noca finishes fourth and is first on the index of performance.

09:07Only 14 cars of the 51 that started manage to make the finish.

09:11Once again Le Mans confirms its reputation as an unforgiving race.
