God Honest Truth is a Messianic Ministry based in Western North Carolina. Our goal is to teach the truths of Yahweh’s word to anyone seeking to further their education and walk in faith. We believe in the inerrancy of scripture and that scripture alone, not any church decree or any word of man, can define what is and is not salvation. We will always strive to do Biblical things in Biblical ways instead of allowing the traditions of men to get in the way of scripture.

00:00In this video, we continue our journey through Yahweh's Ten Commandments, standing now before
00:07the solemn words of the Ninth Commandment itself, Thou shalt not bear false witness against
00:13thy neighbor.
00:14In a world awash with deception and lies, the Almighty calls us to be truthful and to
00:21tell the truth, in word, in deed, and especially in our hearts.
00:26So come with us as we open the scriptures to see what it means to guard our tongues, to
00:31speak faithfully, and to not bear false witness.
00:35All right, so this is our next episode in our Ten Commandments series, and this is going
00:58to be on the Ninth Commandment.
00:59This is all about the Ninth Commandment of do not bear false witness, or thou shalt not
01:05bear false witness.
01:07Now, before we get into this particular teaching, I want to remind everyone that we have notes
01:12available on our website that includes a lot more information than what you're going to

01:53And that convenient link should be down there, whether you're watching on an audio podcasting
01:58platform or a video platform.
02:00So go check it out in the description today.
02:03The Ninth Commandment, the command itself comes from Exodus chapter 20, verse 16, and also
02:11Deuteronomy chapter 5, verse 20.
02:13And the statement or the command goes as such in the scriptures 2009 translation, quote,
02:20quote, you do not bear false witness against your neighbor, end quote from the King James
02:27version.
02:27Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
02:31And from the NSB, I thought this was rather interesting.
02:34It says, do not lie or accuse anyone falsely.
02:39From the Tyndale, thou shalt bear no false witness against thy neighbor.
02:44So it's pretty self-explanatory, but what are we actually looking at here?
02:48Let's break it down real quick in an overview kind of way.
02:52Here you see, it says, you do not bear false witness.
02:57Now, what does false witness mean?
02:59Is that the same thing as lying?
03:02Well, actually, as you go through the study, you'll see that lying and bearing false witness
03:06are two separate concepts.
03:10They're not really different, but I'll explain it in this way.
03:15False witness is a lie.
03:18All false witnessing is a lie, but not all lying is a false witness.
03:22See how that works?
03:24As far as false witness goes, that's more of in the context or the concept of legal or investigative
03:30proceedings, sort of like a courtroom sort of thing, but it doesn't always have to be inside
03:36a courtroom.
03:37It could be some sort of judicial thing, even outside of courtroom, where it'd be investigative
03:42or whatnot.
03:43That's sort of what false witnessing goes towards, what it's really hinting at, because
03:49truth in a justice situation is foundational.
03:55We'll get to that in just a minute.
03:56But also, you'll see here against your neighbor.
03:59This brings up another idea and another thing to think about is who really is your neighbor?
04:05When you think about it, is it just people in your community, people you live next door
04:10to?
04:11Is it just other believers and does not include non-believers?
04:16I would actually go and be of the opinion to say that neighbor means anyone, any human
04:23being on planet Earth, or even not on planet Earth, that would be your neighbor.
04:29And the reason I say that is because I take the words in the parable of Yeshua when he
04:34tells the parable of the Good Samaritan.
04:37Now, the Samaritans were not considered to be believers by the Jews of the day, the Judeans
04:43of the day.
04:44The Samaritans were part of the northern kingdom that were the remnants that were not dispersed
04:50amongst the nations.
04:51They were considered unclean.
04:54Judeans didn't like them.
04:55And they didn't consider them to be part of the flock of God.
05:00So, even in that parable, Yeshua was making a statement that whoever helps, whoever does
05:07good, that is your neighbor.
05:10When you're testifying against someone, it doesn't matter if they're a believer in covenant
05:15with Yahweh or not, they are still considered your neighbor, or at least that's the way
05:20I interpret and see scripture at this point.
05:23If you have a different point of view, go down below in the comments and let us know.
05:28But try to be, try to expound and be specific about what you're trying to say so that we're
05:33clear.
05:34But, as it stands right now, the way we see it is that neighbor includes and means anyone,
05:40any human being on planet Earth.
05:43Now, these two, or actually this concept of not bearing false witness in line, there's
05:49two different words we're going to be looking at tonight.
05:51And one of these words occurs here in Exodus chapter 20, verse 16.
05:55The two words are Skeker and, I'm sorry, Sheker and Kazav.
06:01Sheker and Kazav.
06:04And Sheker actually occurs here in Exodus chapter 20, verse 16, where it says, do not bear false
06:10witness against your neighbor.
06:12But Sheker is Strong's H8267.
06:17H8267.
06:18Sheker.
06:19Sheker.
06:20And according to the outline of biblical usage from blueletterbible.org, Sheker means lie,
06:26deception, falsehood, deception, deceit, falsehood, lie, things like that.
06:31So, even though in Exodus 2016, we're talking about bearing false witness, Sheker still carries
06:37along the connotation of a lie.
06:40But, remember, false witnessing is nuanced and dependent on the context, whether it's referred
06:46to as false witnessing or a lie.
06:49Because false witnessing is a lie, but not all lies are false witness.
06:53See where we're going with that?
06:54According to Strong's definition for Sheker, it means an untruth, a sham, deceit, falsehood,
07:02liar, lie.
07:04And then going on, here is your Brown Driver Briggs entry for Sheker and your Genesis Hebrew
07:09Lexicon entry.
07:10All pretty much saying the same thing.
07:14Deceit, fraud, lie, perjury, things like that.
07:19And finally, here is your Jastrell's Dictionary of the Targums entry and your Klein Dictionary
07:24entry for Sheker.
07:26Went on to our second word that we'll be looking at real quick, just for my fellow nerds out
07:30there, this is the word kazav, kazav.
07:34And this is Strong's H3577, kazav.
07:39And the outline of biblical usage from blueletterbible.org defines kazav as a lie, an untruth, a falsehood,
07:47a deceptive thing.
07:49Think back to our previous word, shakir.
07:52Pretty much the exact same thing.
07:54And it's beyond the scope and purpose of this particular teaching to get into the difference
07:59and the nuances of these two different words, but just kind of take it into consideration
08:05that both of these pretty much mean the same thing, means lie, deceit, untruth, falsehood,
08:11things like that.
08:13Strong's definition defines it pretty much the same way as Shakir.
08:17In the outline of biblical usage, Strong's definition defines kazav as falsehood, untruth,
08:23deceitful, false, liar, lie, lying.
08:25And here is your Brown Driver Briggs entry and your Jacinus' Hebrew lexicon entry.
08:32And then finally, here is your Jasper L's Dictionary of the Targums entry and your Klein Dictionary
08:36entry for kazav.
08:39And once again, all these define it as pretty much the same thing.
08:43Lie, untruth, deceit, things like that.
08:47Now, once again, we cut all these entries down to fit on the slides and for the sake of
08:52time in this teaching, but if you'd like the full entry, you can go look it up for yourself
08:56in each of these particular lexicons or dictionaries, or you can go make it easier on yourself and
09:01look at the notes we took for you where we have the entire entry right there for you on
09:06that notes page.
09:09Truth, like we said, is foundational to a justice system.
09:13Courts have always relied on truth and true witnesses for the justice system and to pursue
09:21justice and enact justice.
09:24A false witness could mean an innocent person is going to jail or being condemned or punished
09:29unjustly.
09:31And a false witness could also mean that a guilty person goes free without being duly punished.
09:38So, a true and faithful witness is paramount to a righteous and functioning, so how should
09:47I put this?
09:48A righteously functioning justice system.
09:52There we go.
09:54The words of a false witness are like weapons, and this is, we know this implicitly, but this
09:59is just saying it explicitly.
10:00The words of a false witness are like weapons bringing harm.
10:04And it brings harm not just to the person who says it, but also to the person it's directed
10:09toward and condemning.
10:11Even beyond legal settings, false testimony threatens the peace and cohesion of community
10:16life.
10:17And it doesn't matter if it's a small community or a big community, if we're talking about
10:20in the context of a nation.
10:24We've all seen the effects in history about national leaders telling lies and how that affects
10:31the nation as a whole, millions of people.
10:35So, truth, true witnessing, and not lying, not false witnessing, is foundational to a
10:43righteously functioning society and a righteously functioning justice system.
10:49Every false witness is a liar, and every false witness they give is a lie, but not every
10:55lie is a false witness.
10:57We went over this a little bit before, but just to pretty much beat a dead horse, we'll
11:03say it again.
11:04There you go.
11:05Lying defiles the speaker.
11:07Like, when your normal life, you see that when someone lies, it really defiles them, even
11:13though they think it's helping them.
11:15Lying defiles the person who is speaking the lie, but a false witness also condemns the innocent
11:22or the person that they are witnessing falsely towards, particularly in an investigative or
11:30justice context.
11:32Like I said earlier, lying and false witnessing is pretty much the same thing, although the
11:39context with the Ninth Commandment is with an investigative or judicial context and not
11:45just lying in general.
11:46So here are some nuances and a little bit of differences between lying and false witnessing.
11:55Now, if you have anything to say about this, please let us know down in the comments or
12:00write to us at teamgodhonesttruth.com.
12:03But here are the differences that we see between lying and false witness, and we'll get to some
12:09scriptures that outline and reference both lying and false witnessing coming up next.
12:15But for right now, the scope of lying is broad.
12:19It can be anything that is untrue, any kind of falsehood.
12:23But false witnessing is more of a narrow concept where it's false testimony or a false accusation
12:30or providing false information in a judicial or investigative context like we've already
12:36covered.
12:37The target for lying could be anyone or anything.
12:41It can be general, personal, or even just no one specific.
12:45Just telling a lie to benefit yourself for any reason.
12:50That is lying in general.
12:52But false witnessing directly harms another person.
12:56In context, lying is any situation, any conversation, any action, or any omission, even sometimes.
13:06Whereas false witnessing in context usually is within the context of a judicial system, within
13:13context of testimony, a legal situation, or some kind of accusation that's being made or
13:20some kind of investigation that's being partaken of.
13:23We'll get to some more verses here in just a minute.
13:27But in the Tanakh, lying is condemned outright and specifically in no uncertain terms, such
13:34as in Leviticus 1911, in the Book of Proverbs, and many other places.
13:38Like I said, we'll get to those in just a moment.
13:41And there's going to be even more in the notes on our website.
13:44So go check that out.
13:46False witnessing, on the other hand, is specifically condemned in the Ninth Commandment, which is
13:51in Exodus 20, 16, and Deuteronomy 5, etc., etc.
13:54There's multiple places where false witnessing is also condemned like lying is.
14:00In the Brit Hadashah, this continues the same prohibition against lying.
14:04We see the prohibition in Colossians 3, 9, Ephesians 4, 25, Revelation 21, 8, and other places.
14:13Whereas false witnessing is also continued as far as the prohibition goes.
14:17And false witnessing is prohibited in the Brit Hadashah in Matthew 26, 59, Matthew 19, 18.
14:25I don't know why I got Deuteronomy in there, but sorry.
14:29But etc., etc.
14:30There's multiple places and even in the Brit Hadashah that speak against and condemn false
14:35witnessing as well as lying.
14:37Now, just to bring the point home a little bit further, lying and false witnessing are
14:46two concepts that exist on their own.
14:50False witnessing exists within the scope or the context of lying, but not all lying is
14:55false witnessing.
14:57Now, Scripture does reference both lying and false witnessing in the same verse in a couple
15:03of instances.
15:04Let's look at Proverbs chapter 6, verses 16 through 19.
15:08These six matters Yahweh hates, and seven are an abomination to Him.
15:14A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands shedding innocent blood.
15:20A heart devising wicked schemes, feet quick to run to evil.
15:23A false witness breathing out lies, and one who causes strife among brothers.
15:29So here we see that these are some things that are an abomination to Yahweh.
15:34And two of the things that are included in this list is number one, a lying tongue.
15:39Number two, a false witness who breathes out lies.
15:43So here we can see that there's lying in general that the Scriptures reference, and then there's
15:50a false witness or false witnessing, which is a lie in and of itself as well.
15:56But both are mentioned in the same verse.
15:59Another one, Proverbs chapter 19, verse 5.
16:03A false witness does not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies does not escape.
16:10Now, in this passage, this could be combined with one another, and come out to be pretty
16:18much in the same context, in the same scope, in the same thing.
16:22So take it as you will, but seeing as how there's other verses that reference both of
16:27these at the same time, I'm thinking that Proverbs 19, verse 5 is also doing the exact
16:31same thing, and we also go down and look at Proverbs chapter 14, verse 5.
16:37A trustworthy witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies.
16:44So a trustworthy witness tells the truth, does not lie, but it's a false witness who breathes
16:50out lies.
16:51So if you're a false witness, you're putting out lies.
16:55So a false witness or bearing false witness is lying, but once again, not all lying is
17:01false witnessing.
17:02It all depends on the context at hand.
17:06And I've seen some people over the years try to justify lying by saying that, well, the
17:12ninth commandment is within a judicial context and not giving false witnessing, false testimony.
17:18Outside of that, they say lying is acceptable.
17:22No.
17:24Lying and false witnessing is condemned by Scripture.
17:29We look at Leviticus chapter 19, verse 11.
17:33Do not steal.
17:34Do not lie.
17:37Do not deceive one another.
17:39Straightforward enough for you?
17:42So even if you say that the context of the ninth commandment is within a judicial,
17:47more investigative context, yeah, that's true.
17:51But lying is still condemned and prohibited.
17:55And false witnessing is just one form of lying.
18:00Zechariah chapter 8, verses 16 through 17.
18:03These are the words you should do.
18:06Speak the truth to one another.
18:09Judge with truth.
18:11And write ruling for peace in your gates.
18:13And do not plot evil in your heart against another.
18:16And do not love a false oath.
18:20For all these I hate, declares Yahweh.
18:23And finally, we're going to look at Ephesians chapter 4, verse 25, going on into the Brit Hadashah.
18:28Therefore, having put off the false, speak truth, each one with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.
18:38Now, here it's not saying do not bear false witness, but it's switched around into more of a positive, where it says speak truth with your neighbor.
18:48Not do not bear false witness against your neighbor, but speak truth with your neighbor.
18:54Pretty much the same things, just different sides of the same coin.
18:58Do not lie, tell the truth, whether it's in a general context, or within a judicial or investigative context.
19:09Lying itself actually contradicts the character of Yahweh.
19:13We think of all the attributes and the things that we would say about Yahweh, and one thing that we can say about Yahweh is that he does not lie.
19:22But does that reflect what scripture actually tells us?
19:26Yes, it does.
19:27Let's look at Titus chapter 1, verses 1 through 3.
19:31According to the belief of Elohim's chosen ones and knowledge of the truth, according to reverence, in expectation of everlasting life, which Elohim, who does not lie.
19:44Hebrews chapter 6, verses 17 through 20.
19:47In this way, Elohim, resolving to show even more clearly to the heirs of promise the unchangeableness of his purpose,
19:54confirmed it by an oath so that by two unchangeable matters in which it is impossible for Elohim to lie, we might have strong encouragement.
20:06So here we can see that one of the things about Yahweh is truth and truthfulness.
20:12Not lying.
20:14So when we lie, even when one of those forms of lying is bearing false witness, we contradict and we go against the very nature of Yahweh.
20:25And we're supposed to be in his image.
20:27We're supposed to conform ourselves to him.
20:29It's an ongoing process, or at least it is for me.
20:33Maybe some of you have already reached that goal.
20:35I know I haven't.
20:36I'm still trying.
20:38And one of the things that I've got to get better at is aligning myself and making myself more like the attributes of Yahweh.
20:47And one of those is being truthful at all costs at all time.
20:52We'll get into some exceptions here in just a minute because I can already feel it.
20:57Some of you out there watching this, you're thinking, oh, well, what about this passage?
21:00What about that instance?
21:02We'll get to that in just a minute.
21:03Just hang with me for just a moment.
21:05Right now, we're going on the character and the attributes of Yahweh.
21:08And one of those is truthfulness or telling the truth.
21:11And when we lie or bear false witness, we are actually contradicting the character of Yahweh or one of the character aspects of Yahweh.
21:20But who is it that we're actually emulating when we lie or bear false witness?
21:26It's the adversary himself.
21:28We look at John chapter 8, verse 44.
21:32You are your father, the devil, and the desires of your father you wish to do.
21:37He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth because there is no truth in him.
21:44When he speaks the lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.
21:52So who's the father of lies?
21:55Hasatan, the adversary.
21:57The devil is it.
21:57Let's hear.
21:59Side note, we don't actually know the name of the adversary.
22:03It always says something like the devil or the adversary.
22:08Lucifer is a mistranslation, by the way.
22:10But like I said, that's a side note.
22:12Anyways.
22:14Hasatan, or the adversary, is the father of lies.
22:17And when we lie, when we bear false witness, we are actually emulating and going after the character aspects of the father of lies.
22:27Who is Satan?
22:29So you'd be more like Yahweh or do you want to be more like Satan?
22:32Tell the truth, bear true witness, you're like Yahweh.
22:39Tell a lie, be a liar, bear false witness, you're more like Satan.
22:44Now there's actually punishments in scripture for bearing false witness, even lying.
22:52But let's look at false witnessing since that is the context of the ninth commandment.
22:56We look at Deuteronomy chapter 19, verses 16 through 19.
23:01So here,
23:30If a false witness comes against someone, and they bear false witness, and the punishment for the accused is death,
23:39but the false witness is discovered to be a false witness,
23:43then the punishment for that false witnessing is death.
23:47They are to be given the same punishment as the accused would have gotten if they would have been convicted.
23:53Another example, if the sentence for the accused is going to be 10 years in prison,
24:01then once the false witness is found out, and they're found out to be providing false testimony,
24:09then they are to be punished with that 10 years in prison that the accused would have gotten if they would have been convicted.
24:15Make sense?
24:16This is something that continues on, or was even understood going forward even after the times of the Tanakh.
24:24It was on into the first couple of centuries.
24:27We look at the writings of Josephus,
24:29And he says in the Antiquities of the Jews, book 4, chapter 8,
24:34So according to Josephus, just like Scripture says,
24:47You're going to have at least two or three witnesses to confirm something,
24:51and that their testimony is confirmed by the way they live their lives.
24:56He then goes on to say,
24:58But if anyone be believed to have borne false witness,
25:01let him, when he is convicted, suffer all the very same punishments which he against whom he bore witness was to have suffered.
25:11So just like we read in Scripture, Josephus is relating the exact same thing,
25:16that when a false witness is found out,
25:19is to be punished with that which the accused would have been punished with had he been convicted.
25:25Then we look at the Didache in chapter 3,
25:28and Didache is one of those really, really early non-scriptural writings that we find in history.
25:36And that was written somewhere around the end of the 1st century,
25:40maybe the beginning of the 2nd century.
25:43But in Didache chapter 3, it says,
25:46My child, be not a liar, since a lie leads to theft.
25:52Does a lie always lead to theft?
25:53Well, it's pretty common.
25:56Yeah, but probably not always.
25:58However, it's still good advice.
26:01Do not lie.
26:02Do not be a liar.
26:03Do not bear false witness.
26:06So even the early writers continued on with this theme of do not lie.
26:12We've kind of lost that over the years, I think, or especially here in America.
26:17It seems like everyone can't be trusted anymore.
26:22You can't take someone at their word.
26:24If you don't have a 30-page legal document to do simple things and have it in writing,
26:32it's nuts anymore.
26:33We should be getting back to that point where a man's word is his bond.
26:39When he says something, you can take it to the bank.
26:42You don't need a legal document to hold him accountable for it.
26:46He should hold himself accountable for what he promises to do or the words that he says.
26:51Unfortunately, that's not the way it is, but that's what scripture tells us to do anyways.
26:57Do not lie.
26:58Do not bear false witness.
27:01There's even eternal consequences for being a false witness or being a liar and not being forgiven or not being repentant of that.
27:11We look at Psalms 101, verses 6-7.
27:17My eyes are on the trustworthy of the land, to dwell with me.
27:22He who walks in a perfect way, he serves me.
27:25He who practices deceit does not dwell in my house.
27:29He who speaks lies does not stand in my presence.
27:34Do you want to make it to the new Jerusalem, to the kingdom of heaven that's going to be established here on earth?
27:42Don't be a liar.
27:45Revelation chapter 21, verses 7-8.
27:47And finally, Revelation chapter 21, verse 27.
28:17And there shall by no means enter into it whatever is unclean, neither anyone do an abomination and falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
28:29So here we can see when it talks about entering into it, it means the new Jerusalem, the new city that comes down out of the heavens to here on earth.
28:38No one's going to enter into it.
28:40And who are those that are not going to enter into it?
28:42Those who are false, who are liars, who are not written in the Lamb's book of life.
28:50So here we can see the unrepentant liars are not in the book of life.
28:54That's what we get from this particular verse right here.
28:57But just like we covered with the previous commandments, even with murder and adultery, there was forgiveness for those because Dawid, King Dawid, King David received forgiveness for both adultery and murder.
29:11If you're a liar, you've told lies, you can be forgiven for that.
29:16You don't have to remain that way.
29:18So repent, turn to Yahweh, be washed of your sins, including the lion, and be cleansed and white as snow through the blood of Yeshua.
29:28Now, I know a lot of you are asking, well, what about this instance in Scripture?
29:33What about that instance in Scripture where it says that people lied and either good things come about or bad things did not come about?
29:41Well, it's kind of condoned that way.
29:44Let's take a look at a couple of those real quick.
29:47In Exodus chapter 1, verses 15 through 21, this is a story of the midwives in the Egyptian slavery time setting.
29:56But here, starting in verse 15 of Exodus chapter 1.
30:01Then the sovereign of Mitzrayim spoke to the Hebrew midwives, and he said,
30:05When you deliver the Hebrew women, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death.
30:10But if it is a daughter, then she shall live.
30:12But the midwives feared Elohim and kept the male children alive.
30:17So the sovereign of Mitzrayim called for the midwives and said to them,
30:21Why have you done this and kept the male children alive?
30:24And the midwives said to Pharaoh,
30:27Because the Hebrew women are not like the Mitzrayim women,
30:30for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.
30:34So Elohim was good to the midwives, and the people increased and became very numerous.
30:40And it came to be because the midwives feared Elohim that he provided households for them.
30:47The ninth commandment says,
30:48Do not bear false witness.
30:50We're seeing in other places where it says,
30:53Do not lie.
30:54But here, we see the Hebrew midwives lying to Pharaoh.
31:00So what's going on here?
31:03We can also see, in addition to all that,
31:05that they lied to Pharaoh,
31:07and then they were rewarded for doing so.
31:12But were they really?
31:13I mean, here you can see that they are preserving life.
31:19They're preserving and protecting human life.
31:22And I think that's the point that we should focus on more than anything else.
31:26Yes, they lied.
31:27No doubt about it.
31:29But I think that the point of this story,
31:31and what we can draw out of this,
31:33the very top thing,
31:34is that they feared Yahweh,
31:37because they knew that all mankind is an image of Yahweh.
31:41So they were protecting these young children,
31:44preserving their life.
31:48Lying is just a secondary thing that comes along with it.
31:51Because they protected the children,
31:54because they did not shed innocent blood,
31:57and because they feared Yahweh,
32:00they were blessed because of this.
32:03They weren't blessed because of their lying.
32:05I don't see anyone anywhere
32:07who's ever blessed or rewarded for lying.
32:12Descending like that.
32:14But I do think the point here is that the Hebrew midwives
32:17were rewarded and blessed for protecting innocent life.
32:23And once again,
32:24the lying part was just secondary.
32:26But it was to protect life.
32:30Keep that in mind,
32:30because we're going to get to some more of that here in just a moment.
32:33Another example,
32:35very much like this,
32:37is going to be with the example of the prostitute named Rahab,
32:41when Joshua and the spies went into the promised land to scout it out.
32:47We look in Joshua chapter 2, verses 1 through 6.
32:50And Yehoshua son of Nun secretly sent out two men from Shittim to spy.
32:56They went and came to the house of a woman, a whore,
32:59and her name was Rahab.
33:01But it was reported to the sovereign of Jericho,
33:03the sovereign of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying,
33:06Bring out the men who have come to you,
33:08who have entered your house.
33:10But the woman had taken the two men and hid them.
33:13So she said,
33:14The men came to me,
33:15but I did not know where they were from.
33:18Then it came to be,
33:19as the gate was being shut when it was dark,
33:21that the men went out.
33:22I do not know where the men went,
33:24but she had brought them up to the roof
33:27and hidden them with the stalks of flax,
33:29which she had laid out on the roof.
33:33So once again,
33:34we see someone who is lying,
33:38but lying to protect and preserve life.
33:41These weren't innocent little babies.
33:44I mean,
33:44they were Joshua and some spies,
33:47pretty much the spies that went there,
33:49not Joshua.
33:50But anyways,
33:51they were not guilty,
33:53at least we're not told they were guilty of anything
33:55deserving of death.
33:56So we can presume that they were innocent
33:58and just somewhere they were in danger for their life.
34:03But Rahab was protecting their lives.
34:05So she lied to protect innocent life.
34:08And she was actually counted as righteous.
34:11And when you look at the genealogy of Yeshua,
34:14who do you see?
34:16You see Rahab,
34:17the harlot.
34:18We even see her mentioned again in James 2,
34:22verses 24-26.
34:24You see then that a man is declared right by works
34:28and not by belief alone.
34:30In the same way was not Rahab,
34:32the whore,
34:33also declared right by works
34:35when she received the messengers
34:36and sent them out another way?
34:39For as the body without the spirit is dead,
34:41so also the belief is dead without the works.
34:44So here we can see that Rahab
34:46believed in Yahweh.
34:48She knew that Yahweh existed
34:50and she actually had
34:51a healthy fear of Yahweh.
34:54But just that belief
34:56and that faith
34:57wasn't enough to declare her righteous.
34:59She actually had to put that
35:01into action with her deeds,
35:03which she did
35:04by protecting the two spies
35:06that came to her house.
35:08By protecting them,
35:09by her faith
35:10and by her actions,
35:11she was declared right.
35:13As James says here,
35:15she was declared right
35:16by her works.
35:20Once again,
35:21it's like with the example
35:22of the Hebrew midwives.
35:23This is an example of
35:25lying to protect life.
35:29We'll be at that in just a moment,
35:30but let's look at some other examples
35:32in Scripture
35:34that you may be thinking about.
35:35We'll cover just real quick here.
35:38We look in 1 Kings 22,
35:39verses 20-23,
35:41and it also gets recounted
35:43in 2 Chronicles 18.
35:45But this is the story
35:46of the lying spirit
35:48that is allowed,
35:50not put,
35:51but allowed
35:52to go into the prophets
35:54of Ahab.
35:55And it's talking about,
35:57well,
35:58when you read that story
35:58in 1 Kings,
36:00we have the council
36:01and Yahweh saying,
36:03well,
36:03who will go up
36:04to entice Ahab
36:05to come?
36:07And there is a false
36:09or a lying spirit
36:10that says,
36:10I will go
36:11and be a falsehood
36:13in the mouths
36:14of the prophets
36:15of Ahab.
36:16So Yahweh allows him
36:18for this false spirit
36:19to go and lie
36:22through the mouths
36:23of the prophets
36:24of Ahab
36:24to entice Ahab
36:25to come about
36:27and do what it is
36:28that Yahweh wants done.
36:30So it wasn't something
36:31that Yahweh lied about.
36:33He didn't even
36:34say,
36:37go lie.
36:37He didn't command
36:38the lie.
36:39He just,
36:40from what I see,
36:41He just allowed it
36:43to happen.
36:45Still,
36:46this is not
36:47the Holy Spirit.
36:48This is not
36:48the spirit of Yahweh.
36:49This is another spirit,
36:51the lying spirit,
36:52that was allowed
36:54to do this.
36:56It wasn't commanded
36:57by Yahweh.
36:57He was just allowed to.
36:59So,
37:00take that nuance
37:01into account.
37:02Another one,
37:03we see in
37:042 Kings 10,
37:06verses 18-31.
37:08This is the story
37:09of King Yehu,
37:12or Jehu,
37:12everybody want to
37:13pronounce it.
37:15He is going out
37:16and he actually
37:17tells lies
37:18to the prophets
37:20and the priests
37:21and the worshippers
37:22of Baal
37:23and tells them,
37:25you know,
37:25come to this
37:26gathering
37:27and make sure
37:28there's none
37:29of the people
37:30of Yahweh there.
37:31Just nothing
37:32but people of Baal.
37:33We're going to
37:34sacrifice to Baal
37:35and we'll have
37:35a great time,
37:36big party,
37:37right?
37:38This is what
37:39he told them.
37:40But he was lying
37:41because once
37:42they all got together,
37:43King Yehu
37:44slaughtered them all,
37:47got rid of
37:48all the worshippers
37:49and the priests
37:49and the adherents
37:50of Baal.
37:52He didn't get rid
37:53of all idolatry
37:54as the story goes on,
37:54but he did get rid
37:55of the servants
37:57and the priests
37:57of Baal
37:58by lying to them.
38:01Now,
38:01what is going on here?
38:03Is this acceptable?
38:05Well,
38:06I'd say it's
38:06still a,
38:09oh,
38:09how does she say this?
38:11It's still breaking
38:11of the ninth commandment.
38:13Still breaking
38:14of the commandment
38:15to not lie.
38:17But,
38:18at the same time,
38:19it is eradicating
38:21idolatry.
38:22It is eradicating
38:23false gods.
38:26So,
38:27take that
38:29for what it's worth
38:29in this particular story.
38:31Just like with the
38:32previous stories
38:33that we covered
38:33that was protecting
38:35innocent life,
38:37this is also
38:38one of those
38:39other
38:39extremely
38:40serious
38:41things.
38:42Idolatry,
38:43in other words.
38:44But all in all,
38:46the command
38:47is do not lie
38:48and I would say
38:49in my own opinion
38:50the way I read
38:51scripture
38:51is do not lie
38:52for any reason
38:54or give false witness
38:55for any reason
38:57unless
38:58it is for the
38:59preservation of life.
39:00The
39:00angel example
39:02goes back
39:02to World War II.
39:03If you're
39:04harboring and protecting
39:05Jews in World War II
39:07and Nazis come to your door
39:08asking if you know
39:09where any Jews are,
39:11well,
39:11do you
39:12go by the
39:13strict adherence
39:14of
39:15the scriptures
39:16and tell them,
39:17yeah,
39:18there's Jews
39:18in my back closet?
39:20Or,
39:21do you say,
39:22no,
39:23I don't know
39:23where any Jews are
39:24in order to protect
39:25innocent life?
39:27That's what I'm saying.
39:28When it comes down
39:29to protecting
39:29innocent life,
39:30we have
39:32scriptural precedent
39:32for lying
39:34and setting aside
39:35that command
39:36temporarily
39:37just to protect
39:38innocent life.
39:40But,
39:40even within
39:41Judaism,
39:42there is a concept
39:43known as
39:44tekuach nefesh.
39:46And this is
39:47pretty much
39:47the preservation
39:48of life
39:49or setting aside
39:49of the commands
39:50for the preservation
39:51of life.
39:52We went over this
39:53a little bit
39:54in last year's
39:55adultery teaching.
39:58But,
39:59let's go over it again
40:00just in case
40:00some of y'all
40:01missed that.
40:03Here from
40:04wikipedia.org,
40:05pikuach nefesh.
40:07Pikuach nefesh,
40:08which means
40:08saving a soul
40:09or saving a life,
40:10is the principle
40:11in halaha
40:11or Jewish law
40:13that the preservation
40:14of human life
40:15overrides virtually
40:16any other religious
40:17rule of Judaism.
40:18In the event
40:19that a person
40:19is in critical danger,
40:21most mitzvot
40:22or commandments
40:23become inapplicable
40:25if they would
40:26hinder the ability
40:26to save oneself
40:28or someone else.
40:30However,
40:31there are certain
40:31exceptions.
40:32Some rules
40:33and commandments
40:33may not be broken
40:34under any circumstances
40:35and thus
40:37may require
40:37an act
40:38of self-sacrifice.
40:40Go look at that article
40:41if you want
40:42some of the nuances
40:44and the instances
40:45where you're not
40:46allowed to set aside
40:47the commands.
40:47but for the most part
40:49when it comes
40:50to protecting
40:51a life,
40:52protecting an innocent
40:52life especially,
40:54it's okay to set
40:55aside the commands
40:56or bend the commands
40:57at some time.
40:58And I think
40:58in my own personal
40:59opinion,
41:00there's actually
41:00precedent
41:01from the teaching
41:03of Yeshua himself
41:05when he talks
41:06about who would
41:07not rescue
41:09a lamb
41:10who falls
41:10in a ditch
41:11on the Sabbath.
41:12That would
41:13technically be work
41:14and you're not
41:14supposed to work
41:15on the Sabbath
41:16but you're preserving
41:17that life.
41:18And I think
41:19that's something
41:19that Yeshua
41:20was teaching there
41:21is that when it
41:23comes to preserving
41:23a life,
41:25you can set aside
41:27or even bend
41:28the commandments
41:29in order to
41:30preserve that life.
41:31Another example
41:32from the teachings
41:33of Yeshua
41:34when he talks
41:35about how David
41:36and his men
41:37went into the temple
41:38and ate the showbread
41:39in order to
41:41rejuvenate themselves
41:42and to save
41:43their life.
41:44Once again,
41:45they weren't
41:46saving other
41:46people's lives
41:47in that instance
41:47they were
41:48saving their
41:48own lives.
41:49At the same time
41:50that showbread
41:51was only
41:52for the priest
41:53and only
41:53for the temple.
41:54They weren't
41:54supposed to
41:55eat it
41:55but in order
41:57to save
41:58their life
41:58they set
41:59that aside
42:00and ate
42:01the showbread.
42:03So I think
42:04that even Yeshua
42:05himself gives
42:06precedent
42:07and teaches
42:07this concept
42:09of preserving
42:10life
42:11even when
42:12sometimes
42:12it's necessary
42:13to set
42:14aside
42:15or bend
42:16temporarily
42:16some of
42:18the commandments.
42:19However,
42:20in general
42:21when we look
42:23at the concept
42:24of false
42:24witnessing
42:25and the
42:26United
42:26Commandment
42:26or just
42:27line in
42:28general
42:28because once
42:29again,
42:29false witnessing
42:30is a type
42:31of line.
42:33You should not
42:34do it
42:34unless it's
42:36for saving
42:37life.
42:38And I think
42:39that's what
42:39scripture really
42:40comes about
42:41and represents
42:42to us.
42:43As far as
42:44each other,
42:45we should not
42:45be lying
42:46or deceiving
42:47or false
42:47witnessing
42:47against each
42:49other.
42:50Colossians
42:50chapter 3
42:51verses 9
42:52through 11.
42:53Do not
42:54lie to
42:55each other
42:56since you
42:57have put
42:57off the
42:58old man
42:58with his
42:59practices
42:59and have
43:00put on
43:00the new
43:01one
43:01who is
43:02renewed
43:02in knowledge
43:03according
43:03to the
43:03likeness
43:04of him
43:04who created
43:05him.
43:06Where there
43:06is no
43:07Greek
43:07and Yehudi
43:08circumcised
43:09and uncircumcised
43:10foreigner
43:11Scythian
43:11slave
43:12free
43:12but Messiah
43:13is all
43:14and in
43:15all.
43:16When you
43:17come to
43:17Yeshua
43:17and you
43:18become a
43:18believer
43:19you become
43:19washed in
43:20the blood
43:21you become
43:21born again
43:22you become
43:23a new
43:24man
43:25a new
43:25person.
43:26You should
43:27not be
43:27like that
43:27old man
43:28you should
43:28not be
43:28like that
43:29Gentile
43:29that you
43:30used to
43:30be
43:30you're
43:31no longer
43:31a Gentile
43:32put off
43:33the things
43:33like false
43:34witnessing
43:34put off
43:35the things
43:35like lying
43:36and put
43:37on that
43:37new man
43:38in Yeshua
43:39the one
43:40who
43:40tells
43:41the truth
43:41and
43:42acts
43:43righteously
43:43toward
43:44his
43:44brothers.
43:46So
43:46in
43:47summary
43:48you do
43:51not bear
43:51false
43:51witness
43:52against
43:52your
43:52neighbor.
43:53That is
43:53the ninth
43:54commandment
43:55straightforward
43:55plain
43:56and simple.
43:58It comes
43:58from Exodus
43:58chapter 20
43:59verse 16
44:00and Deuteronomy
44:01chapter 5
44:02verse 20.
44:03The two
44:04words that
44:04we briefly
44:05covered
44:06and looked
44:06at some
44:06of the
44:07entries
44:07for
44:08are
44:08Shakir
44:09and
44:10Kazav
44:11that is
44:11Strong's
44:12H8267
44:13and
44:14Strong's
44:15H3577
44:16respectively.
44:18Truth
44:19is
44:20foundational
44:20to bring
44:21about
44:21justice
44:22and to
44:23establish
44:23trust
44:24and confidence
44:25in a
44:25society
44:26in a
44:27family
44:27in a
44:28community
44:28wherever
44:29you
44:29have
44:29it.
44:30Truth
44:30is
44:31necessary
44:32to bring
44:32about
44:32good
44:33and
44:33righteous
44:34things.
44:36All
44:36false
44:36witnessing
44:37or
44:37testimony
44:37is
44:38lying
44:39but
44:39not
44:39all
44:40lying
44:40is
44:41false
44:41witnessing.
44:43Both
44:44lying
44:44and
44:45bearing
44:45false
44:45witness
44:46are
44:46didactically
44:47or
44:47specifically
44:48condemned
44:49in
44:49scripture.
44:50And
44:50we
44:50went
44:50over
44:50just
44:51a
44:52few
44:52of
44:52the
44:52verses
44:53which
44:53directly
44:54and
44:55straightforward
44:55condemn
44:56both
44:57lying
44:57and
44:58false
44:58witnessing.
44:59There's
44:59plenty
44:59of
44:59others
45:00but
45:00we
45:01went
45:01over
45:01a
45:01few
45:01of
45:01those
45:02which
45:02illustrated
45:03the
45:03point
45:03beautifully.
45:05False
45:05witnesses
45:05were to
45:06be
45:06punished
45:06with
45:07the
45:07same
45:07sentence
45:08as
45:08that
45:09which
45:09was
45:09sought
45:09after
45:10for
45:10the
45:11accused.
45:11We
45:12went
45:12over
45:12and
45:13looked
45:13at
45:13that
45:13in
45:13scripture
45:13and
45:14we
45:14also
45:14looked
45:15at
45:15Josephus
45:16relating
45:16the
45:16very
45:17same
45:17thing
45:17in
45:17his
45:18writings
45:18of
45:19the
45:19antiquities
45:19of
45:20the
45:20Jews.
45:21Scripture
45:21illustrates
45:22that
45:22preserving
45:23life
45:23is
45:25one
45:26reason
45:26to
45:26turn
45:26a
45:26blind
45:27eye
45:27to
45:28lying.
45:29We
45:29see
45:29the
45:29Hebrew
45:30midwives
45:30when they
45:31were
45:31preserving
45:31life
45:32there was a
45:33blind eye
45:34turned to
45:34their lying
45:35which was
45:35done in
45:36order to
45:36preserve
45:37life.
45:38We
45:38see
45:38Rahab
45:39when she
45:39lied to
45:40preserve
45:40the lives
45:41of the
45:41spies
45:42there was
45:42a blind
45:43eye
45:43turned to
45:44her lying
45:45because she
45:46was
45:46saving
45:47lives.
45:48And that
45:49is the
45:49only
45:49exception
45:50that I
45:50can see
45:51in my
45:51opinion
45:52to
45:53set
45:54aside
45:54the
45:54commandment
45:55to
45:55not
45:55lie.
45:57And
45:58finally
45:58on the
45:59whole
45:59we
45:59should
46:00not
46:00sin
46:01by
46:01bearing
46:01false
46:02witness
46:02or
46:03lying.
46:04Like I
46:05said
46:05the only
46:06exception
46:07I can
46:07see
46:07is
46:08to
46:08preserve
46:09life
46:10and
46:11that
46:11is
