God Honest Truth is a Messianic Ministry based in Western North Carolina. Our goal is to teach the truths of Yahweh’s word to anyone seeking to further their education and walk in faith. We believe in the inerrancy of scripture and that scripture alone, not any church decree or any word of man, can define what is and is not salvation. We will always strive to do Biblical things in Biblical ways instead of allowing the traditions of men to get in the way of scripture.

00:00Yahweh's name is not a trifle, not something that we should play around with or take lightly.
00:07In fact, name means more than just the utterance or what we call someone.
00:12Name means authority, character, reputation, stuff like that.
00:16So when the third commandment tells us to bear Yahweh's name correctly and not to bear it in vain,
00:23it means more than just profanity or saying GD.
00:27All about that and more coming up in this episode about the third commandment.
00:51So this episode is going to be the third in our Ten Commandments series.
00:55This is going to be about the third commandment of not taking God or Yahweh's name in vain.
01:02What does that actually mean?
01:03We're going to get into that and what it also means in addition to not just the whole profanity aspect.
01:09So stay tuned for that.

01:59And that link should be down there, whether you're watching through a video platform
02:03or listening to an audio podcasting platform.
02:06It should be down there in the description, all the same.
02:10Now, this is the third of the Ten Commandments.
02:12Here is a listing from the Scriptures 2009 translation.
02:18And of course, if you're like me and you were raised on the King James,
02:21here is the standard, traditional, probably what you know by heart,
02:25King James rendering of the Ten Commandments.
02:28And number three, thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
02:34That's one particular commandment itself has a lot that goes into it.
02:38Let's read the Scriptures 2009 translation.
02:42From Exodus chapter 20, verse 7.
02:45You do not bring the name of Yahweh your Elohim to naught,
02:49for Yahweh does not leave the one unpunished who brings his name to naught.
02:55Now, there's various translations that we put down here for your benefit.
02:59Some of those do very well, in my opinion, judge for yourself.
03:04But it's not just about taking the name in vain.
03:08Now, just as a pet peeve and side note, if you are part of the Messianic faith,
03:14you know exactly what I'm talking about here.
03:16But for those of you who are not, come from a more of a traditional,
03:20mainstream, churchianity kind of background,
03:23the word G-O-D, God, is not the name of the Almighty.
03:31God is actually a name, but it's not the name of the Almighty.
03:33The name of the Almighty is Yahweh.
03:36So, using profanities such as G-D, is not taking the name in vain.
03:43Okay, a lot of people think that is, but it's not, because his name is not God.
03:49It's Yahweh.
03:50It's a little bit of a pet peeve educational moment for you there.
03:54But, getting even more nerdy, look at that word right there where it says,
03:58you do not bring.
03:59This is Strong's H-3-7-5, and that's the Hebrew word Nasa.
04:05Nasa.
04:06And that literally means, basically like it's rendered in most translations,
04:10it means to lift, bear up, carry, or take.
04:14Here's your outline of biblical usage.
04:16And there was a ton of information in the dictionaries and the lexicons
04:22for this particular word, the Strong's entry.
04:26So, we really cut it down.
04:28If you'd like the full entry, go check out the notes we took,
04:31and you'll be able to see the massive amount of information
04:33that is there for this particular word.
04:36But here is your Strong's definition and your Brown Driver Briggs entry.
04:40Pretty much saying the same thing.
04:42To carry, to lift, to bear.
04:45Keep that in mind.
04:46That's one I really like here.
04:50That really goes along with what I think the Third Commandment
04:52is really getting to at the heart of it.
04:56And here is your decision.
04:57It says Hebrew lexicon.
04:58Pretty much the same thing.
04:59Lift, take up, carry, bear, offer, aid.
05:03Here's your Jastrell's Dictionary of the Targums
05:04and your Klein Dictionary.
05:07And like I said, of course, the notes are going to have the full entries,
05:10and you'll also be able to have these drosh slides
05:13at your convenience there on our website at godhonesttruth.com.
05:18Now, this Third Commandment is not just about taking Yahweh's name in vain,
05:26not just about profanity.
05:28It's about more than that, more than just speech.
05:32It's about what we do, how we say, how we live our lives.
05:36And like I said, it's not just about avoiding profanity.
05:39It's how we bear ourselves.
05:41It's how we represent Yahweh.
05:42Yahweh, and as we got into in a previous episode,
05:45especially when it comes to the whole baptismal formula
05:49of in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
05:52we went over the fact that in biblical times and biblical mindset,
05:56the Hebraic mindset, not the Hellenistic mindset,
06:00but the Hebraic mindset,
06:02name really conveys more, much, much more
06:06than just the utterance of sounds that come out of your mouth
06:10as regards a particular person.
06:14Name in the Hebraic mindset means authority, reputation, things like that.
06:19And we went over some examples about going in the name of the king,
06:23speaking of the name of David as a Old Testament or Tanakh example.
06:28So name means a lot more than just what someone calls themselves.
06:33It is the authority, it's the reputation,
06:36and this really starts broadening the scope
06:40and our understanding of the third commandment
06:42when we think of name as more than just an utterance.
06:46The third commandment represents and addresses more than just speech,
06:50more than just profanity.
06:52It's about how we bear and represent the name of Yahweh
06:55as His followers in the world today
06:58through our words, our actions, our lifestyle,
07:02the choices that we make, the things we do, what we say.
07:06It encompasses all of that.
07:08It's all about bearing His name,
07:10bearing His reputation, bearing His authority.
07:14The Hebrew word here, like I said, of take,
07:17when it says do not take the name of the Lord in vain,
07:19it means to lift up or to carry.
07:22But like I said, I personally like the whole translation of bear.
07:25Do not bear the name of the Lord in vain
07:28or do not bear it to nothingness.
07:30It implies bearing His name as His people.
07:34And if you are saved, if you are born again,
07:36you are one of His people.
07:38You are no longer a Gentile.
07:40You are one of His people.
07:41You are an Israelite.
07:43You are a Christian, a Messianic,
07:45whatever you want to call it.
07:47It's all the same thing.
07:48But you are one of Yahweh's people,
07:50one of His children.
07:52And therefore, we should represent Him accordingly and accurately.
07:56That is bearing His name, bearing His reputation.
08:00We should put out to the world a good reputation because Yahweh is good.
08:06And this refers not only to speech,
08:09but also, like I said, to the lifestyle and the representation
08:12that we put out there for the world.
08:15We look at 2 Timothy 2, verse 19.
08:19However, the solid foundation of Elohim stands firm,
08:22having this seal.
08:24Yahweh knows those who are His.
08:27And let everyone who names the name of Messiah
08:31turn away from unrighteousness.
08:35So, when we become one of His people,
08:38when we become one of His children,
08:41we are to turn away from unrighteousness
08:43because Yahweh is the pinnacle,
08:46the example, the definition of righteous.
08:50He is the bar that we should reach for,
08:54that we should model our own lives after.
08:57So, when we become one of His people,
08:58we should turn away from unrighteousness
09:02towards His example of righteousness.
09:05Now, the next word that we'd like to go a little bit deeper into
09:08on this third commandment,
09:10where it says,
09:10Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
09:14We also looked at the Scriptures 2009 translation,
09:17which says,
09:18Do not bring His name to naught.
09:21Now, this whole word for vain or naught
09:23is the Hebrew word shah,
09:26and that is Strong's H7723,
09:30Hebrew word shah, shah.
09:33And the unambigable usage,
09:35Strong's definition,
09:36and Brown Driver Briggs,
09:37pretty much all has the same thing.
09:39They're all in agreement here,
09:40meaning emptiness, vanity, falsehood,
09:44nothingness, worthlessness.
09:46And personally, I like this whole idea
09:48of worthlessness.
09:50Thou shalt not bear the name of Yahweh
09:54to worthlessness,
09:56and bring it to worthlessness,
09:57bring His reputation,
09:59bring His authority down to nothingness,
10:01down to worthlessness.
10:03And I think that's what it's really getting to.
10:06And hey, feel free to disagree.
10:08And if you do,
10:08let us know down in the comments
10:09and why.
10:11Actually, you know,
10:12we could have a little back and forth conversation here,
10:14or you can email us either way.
10:16But that's just kind of how we're seeing it here.
10:18But anyways,
10:20getting back to the nerdy part,
10:21shah meaning emptiness,
10:22vanity, falsehood,
10:24worthlessness,
10:25things like that.
10:26Once again,
10:28there's your outline of biblical usage,
10:30Strong's definition,
10:31and Brown Driver Briggs entry.
10:33Here's your Jacinus' Hebrew lexicon entry,
10:36your Jastral's Dictionary of the Targums entry,
10:38and your Klein Dictionary entry.
10:41And also this week,
10:42we were able to find a copy
10:45of the Hebrew and Aramaic lexicon
10:47of the Old Testament,
10:48or the Halat,
10:49which is highly sought after.
10:51So it's awesome to be able to find this,
10:54but here is your Halat entry for shah,
10:58meaning pretty much the same thing,
11:00worthlessness,
11:02deception,
11:02triviality,
11:04things like that,
11:04vanity,
11:06et cetera,
11:07et cetera,
11:07agreeing with pretty much what we've already saw.
11:13Anyways,
11:13this word shah means to bring to naught,
11:17to bring to nothingness,
11:18to bring to worthlessness,
11:20things like that.
11:20Like I said,
11:22personally,
11:22I like the whole worthlessness idea.
11:25It really conveys what we really see
11:27that third commandment to being.
11:29But shah meaning falsehood,
11:31emptiness,
11:31nothingness,
11:32emptiness,
11:32vanity,
11:33and includes speaking his name
11:35in a frivolous or deceptive
11:37or dishonest way.
11:39But it goes much more than that too.
11:41Like we said earlier,
11:43it's more than just speech.
11:45It's about the way we live our lives.
11:47So this bringing it to nothingness
11:49also comes from how we live our lives,
11:52the choices we make,
11:53the words we speak,
11:54the way we treat other people.
11:57Unfortunately,
11:58the saying is true
11:59that Christianity is a religion
12:02that eats its own.
12:04You probably had that experience yourself.
12:07If you grew up in like me
12:09and went to a mainstream Christian church
12:11and then you found out the truth
12:13about certain traditions
12:15and things like that
12:16and what the scriptures actually teach,
12:19if you're like me,
12:20you ended up getting the left foot of fellowship,
12:23as we call it,
12:24on more than one occasion.
12:26But that is,
12:28in my opinion,
12:30that whole division,
12:32that whole nastiness,
12:34that whole hatred
12:35that was experienced in those situations
12:37was a violation of the third commandment.
12:40It was burying the reputation of Yahweh
12:43and bringing it to worthlessness
12:45because of that kind of attitude.
12:49So,
12:50take it for what you will.
12:51Agree, disagree.
12:52Either way,
12:53you're still brothers and sisters
12:54and Messiah to us.
12:56But looking here
12:56about bringing the,
12:58I'm sorry,
12:59the whole word of naught
13:00or worthlessness
13:01or nothingness,
13:02we look at Psalms 24,
13:04verses 3-4,
13:06who does go up
13:07into the mountain of Yahweh
13:09and who does stand
13:10in his set-apart place?
13:12He who has innocent hands
13:13and a clean heart,
13:15who did not bring his life
13:16to naught
13:17and did not swear deceivingly.
13:21So,
13:21as one of his people,
13:23be honest,
13:24be righteous,
13:25do not be a deceiver,
13:27do not make bad choices,
13:28do not misrepresent
13:30your heavenly Father.
13:32Do not bear his name,
13:34do not carry his name
13:35or his reputation
13:36in a negative way
13:38because we want to lift up,
13:41we want to praise
13:42and honor the name,
13:44the authority,
13:45the reputation
13:45of Yahweh.
13:48And this applies to all
13:50who claim his name,
13:51all who claim to be
13:52a part of his people,
13:54all who claim to be
13:55a son or a daughter
13:56of Yahweh.
13:58And if you identify
13:58as his follower,
14:00you bear his name.
14:04Like we were saying,
14:04name is much more
14:06than just the utterance
14:08or the,
14:09what do we call it,
14:11the audible sounds
14:14that someone goes by,
14:15the utterance,
14:16their names,
14:16much more than that.
14:17It's the reputation,
14:18it's the authority,
14:20it is the character.
14:21Numbers chapter 6,
14:22verses 23 through 27.
14:24This is something
14:25that you probably know
14:27because we say this
14:29and we pray it,
14:31it's about every single
14:32live stream.
14:34But here,
14:35Numbers chapter 6,
14:36verses 23 through 27.
14:38Speak to Aaron
14:39and his sons,
14:40saying,
14:40This is how you bless
14:41the children of Israel.
14:43Say to them,
14:44Yahweh bless you
14:45and guard you.
14:46Yahweh make his face
14:47shine upon you
14:48and show favor to you.
14:50Yahweh lift up his face
14:51upon you
14:52and give you peace.
14:53Thus they shall put
14:54my name
14:56on the children
14:57of Israel
14:58and I myself
15:00shall bless them.
15:03So this whole thing
15:04that we do,
15:05every single service,
15:07every single live stream
15:08of the Aaronic benediction,
15:10is the way
15:11that we are told
15:12in scripture
15:12to put the name
15:14of Yahweh
15:15upon his people.
15:19So there you go.
15:20If you identify
15:21as one of his people,
15:22if you are one of his people,
15:24you bear,
15:25you carry his name.
15:28Misrepresenting him,
15:29misrepresenting him
15:30through the bearing
15:31of his name,
15:32through hypocrisy,
15:33through continued sin,
15:36through false prophecy,
15:38through deceit,
15:38through unrighteousness,
15:39through lawlessness,
15:40this brings his name
15:42to nothingness.
15:43It brings his name,
15:44his reputation,
15:45his authority,
15:47his character
15:47to worthlessness
15:49in the eyes
15:50of the world.
15:51And this is why
15:51we are not to bear
15:53his name in vain.
15:55We're not to bear
15:56his name to nothingness.
15:58And those who use
15:59his name
15:59but live in rebellion,
16:01willful rebellion,
16:04or teach falsehood,
16:06they violate
16:07this third commandment
16:09because they're
16:09misrepresenting
16:10the name,
16:11the authority,
16:12the character,
16:13the reputation
16:13of Yahweh.
16:16It condemns,
16:17this third commandment
16:18condemns false oaths
16:20and blasphemy
16:21because false oaths
16:22and blasphemy,
16:23that gets into
16:25some of the profanity,
16:27I guess you could say,
16:27but it's more directly
16:30to the heart
16:31of the third commandment
16:32in that it brings
16:34his name to nothingness.
16:36Using Yahweh's name
16:37to swear falsely,
16:39lie,
16:40manipulate,
16:41or justify evil
16:42is a grievous sin
16:44because it violates
16:45that third commandment.
16:47Leviticus 19,
16:49verse 12,
16:50And do not swear
16:51falsely by my name
16:54and so profane
16:55the name
16:56of your Elohim.
16:58I am Yahweh.
17:01Jeremiah 23,
17:02verses 25-28,
17:05I have heard
17:06what the prophets
17:07have said
17:08who prophesy
17:08falsehood in my name,
17:10the prophets
17:11of falsehood
17:11and prophets
17:12of the deceit
17:13of their own heart
17:14who try to make
17:15my people
17:16forget my name
17:17by their dreams
17:18which everyone
17:19relates to his neighbor.
17:21So do not
17:23prophesy falsely
17:24by the name
17:25because you are
17:25violating the third commandment,
17:27you're bringing
17:27the name
17:28to worthlessness.
17:29Do not do so
17:31deceitfully
17:31in the name
17:33of Yahweh
17:33and do not
17:34try to get people
17:35to forget
17:36the name.
17:37Here and in more
17:38than just this one
17:39particular instance,
17:40it really places
17:42a lot of importance
17:42on the name
17:44of Yahweh.
17:46Now, like I said,
17:47name in Hebraic thought
17:48conveys more
17:49than just the utterance
17:50and what someone
17:51goes by.
17:52It means character,
17:52reputation,
17:53authority,
17:53things like that.
17:54But I also do believe
17:56that the name
17:58of Yahweh
17:58is important
17:59to know
18:01and to tell
18:03at least the faithful
18:04anyways.
18:05There's some
18:06wisdom out there
18:07and,
18:08you know,
18:09not putting
18:10your pearls
18:11before,
18:11swine,
18:12so to speak.
18:13But with the faithful,
18:15I do believe
18:16it's rather important
18:17to continue
18:18His name
18:19so that our children
18:20and those who come
18:20after us
18:21will know His name
18:22and know
18:23which God
18:24that's out there
18:25and being reported
18:26is the actual
18:27and true
18:27and only existing
18:28God.
18:29It's not Allah.
18:31It's not Krishna
18:32or Vishnu
18:33or whatever those
18:34things are.
18:35No.
18:36The only one
18:37true living God
18:38is Yahweh.
18:40That's it.
18:42There is no other
18:43God beside Him
18:44and that's one
18:44of the reasons
18:45I think it is
18:45important.
18:46Now,
18:46we didn't have time
18:47to put in
18:48the information
18:48about when the
18:50Jews did away
18:51with pronouncing
18:51the name
18:52but there is
18:53some information
18:53in the notes
18:54so go check
18:55that out
18:55on God Honest Truth
18:56when you get time
18:57if that's something
18:58that interests you.
18:59Now,
18:59this third commandment
19:00also warns
19:01and gives judgment
19:03for a misuse
19:04of the third commandment
19:05or if you break
19:06the third commandment.
19:08It's one of the ten
19:09there's more than that
19:10we went over
19:11some of the curses
19:12last week
19:13for the second commandment
19:14but this is one of the ten
19:16that comes with a direct
19:17warning of punishment.
19:18The verse explicitly states
19:20and let's read this again
19:21Yahweh does not
19:23leave the one
19:24unpunished
19:24who brings
19:25his name
19:26to naught.
19:28And that comes from
19:29Exodus chapter 20
19:30verse 7
19:31and of course
19:31the second iteration
19:33in Deuteronomy
19:33chapter 5
19:34verse 11.
19:35We also look at
19:38Ezekiel chapter 39
19:39verse 7
19:40And I shall make
19:42my set-apart name
19:43known
19:44in the midst
19:45of my people
19:46Yisrael
19:47and not let
19:48my set-apart name
19:49be profaned
19:51any more.
19:53And the nations
19:53shall know
19:54that I am
19:55Yahweh
19:56the set-apart
19:57or holy one
19:58in Yisrael.
20:01This is another
20:02aspect of the
20:03third commandment
20:04is making his name
20:05holy.
20:06If we misuse it
20:07if we bear it
20:08or bring it
20:09to nothingness
20:10we bring it
20:10to worthlessness
20:11it's not holy
20:12anymore.
20:13By honoring
20:15his name
20:16by honoring
20:17his character
20:17his reputation
20:18his authority
20:18we are making
20:20it holy
20:20we're making it
20:21set-apart
20:22we're making it
20:23sacred.
20:24That is another
20:25aspect of this
20:26third commandment.
20:28Now like I said
20:29earlier
20:29the whole concept
20:31of name
20:32in Hebraic
20:32thought
20:33conveys more
20:33than just
20:34the utterance
20:34of what you
20:35refer to someone
20:36as.
20:37It means
20:38character
20:38authority
20:39reputation
20:40things like
20:40that
20:40and here
20:41are some
20:41examples
20:42I gave
20:42for you
20:43tonight
20:44and like I
20:45said
20:45there's a
20:45whole lot
20:46more
20:46information
20:46on the
20:47notes
20:47and also
20:48in the
20:48drosh
20:49that we
20:49did
20:49back
20:50during
20:50the
20:51Godhead
20:51series
20:52and that
20:52drosh
20:52was entitled
20:53in the name
20:54of the
20:54Father
20:54Son
20:54and Holy
20:55Spirit
20:55but here's
20:56some examples
20:57first one
20:58coming from
20:58John 17
20:59verse 6
21:00this is
21:01Yeshua
21:01speaking
21:02and he
21:03says
21:03I have
21:03revealed
21:04your name

21:05men
21:05whom you
21:06gave me

21:07the world
21:07they were

21:09and you
