00:00The east side of the city centre may look quite different in the coming years as Glasgow City
00:04Council have revealed new plans to revamp a stretch from Glasgow Cross to Central Station.
00:09The Argyll Street East Avenue project aims to widen pavements, develop new green areas
00:14and create a new west to east bus route. This involves building a road through the
00:19pedestrianised area of Argyll Street, meaning buses will be able to drive past M&S and Primark.
00:26The council said this will create shorter journey times, reduce traffic and improve
00:31public transport connections. They've created proposals for the development and engagement
00:36with the local community as planned in the coming weeks. Currently on Argyll Street there's a road
00:42that curves around in the centre just where JD is and goes through Queen Street and what will happen
00:49under these new plans. This pedestrianised area over here will be made into a single road so buses
01:00will be able to go down on a one-way system. The intention is to reduce traffic on Ingram Street
01:07as opposed to pedestrianise the other areas and kind of I suppose balance it out. In the plans it looks
01:15like this area here will now be a road while this will remain the same. It's all part of the wider
01:23avenues scheme underway across the city which is being funded by the Scottish and UK governments.
01:29They're looking to make the streets more attractive and create an international look for investors,
01:33visitors and Glaswegians, saying this is key to Glasgow's long-term economic recovery.
01:39If plans go ahead, work is expected to start in 2026.
