00:00You can expect some major changes to Glasgow's skyline in the future as a new policy on design
00:05has been agreed on and includes new areas where the City Council would support the development
00:10of skyscrapers. The Tall Buildings Design Guide establishes what parts of the city are suitable
00:16for these structures as well as outlining expectations on build quality design and aesthetics.
00:21It also includes guidance around encouraging mixed-use developments such as the inclusion
00:26of street-level retail and leisure. The areas included on this list are Charing Cross,
00:31Anderston Quay, Trongate and Kowcadden's. The guidance marks a significant change from the
00:37past number of decades where buildings have been capped below what might be expected in Glasgow
00:42considering its population and international profile. Glasgow City Council said they are
00:48confident the skyline will change into something comparable with other European cities.
00:52They said the previous cap had been a barrier to growth and productivity in the UK.
00:58The new guidance was shaped by findings from initial consultation sessions attended by architects,
01:04designers, developers and amenity organisations before drawing in responses from a public consultation.
01:11Inspiration was also taken from the experience of European cities of a similar size and the changes
01:17to development priorities in the UK and Europe. The guidance will now go to the Council's City
01:22Administration Committee for approval when the final version will be available.
