00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann and today I am joined by Jen Muir endometriosis advocate
00:06and author Jen will be talking to us today about her new book endometriosis and also providing
00:12some information and insight on what to do if you suspect you may have endometriosis and I have my
00:18copy of the book right here I've been reading away at it and it'll probably pop up a little bit blurry
00:24and yeah it's such a really comprehensive guide I was really blown away by how much information is in
00:31here and it's it kind of as someone with endometriosis being able to see all the different
00:35layers everything that's included it really is like a one-stop shop if you suspect you have
00:41endo can I ask what was your inspiration behind writing the book it's something that I realized
00:48was needed probably when I was going through my own diagnosis struggle so it took me 22 years to get
00:55a diagnosis and I wasn't one of the people who had no idea what endometriosis was and it still took me
01:03two decades to get a diagnosis and even then you know trying to research things and look things up
01:09and understand what was going on in my body everything was so conflicting and the answer
01:16that I kept getting was we don't know we actually do know quite a lot about this disease now and how
01:22it manifests and how to treat it in the most effective ways for management and I think that
01:29was the biggest shock for me was when I was doing my own research and reading for my personal journey
01:36was how much there is it just hasn't been pulled together in one place in an accessible format what really
01:43struck me from reading it was the variety of experts that are included you know we have thoracic experts
01:48we have experts in the UK and you know radiologists and also worldwide experts what how important is
01:54having that access to those expert voices for patients or for people who suspect they have endo
02:01I mean it's hard to downplay the importance of it it can change your life it can save lives in some
02:08instances um it's such such a complicated disease and for so long we've just had this system where
02:16general gynees and this is not to downplay what the work they do which is phenomenal on other sort of
02:21diseases but this is such a complex disease and we're starting to realize now it needs its own
02:28team it needs people who devote their careers to this you know they're all quite active online but
02:34the most the vast majority of the time they're in the operating rooms where we desperately need them
02:39to be so they're not the ones that we quite often get to hear from in media articles or in you know
02:44conversations and in policy rooms so for me it was really really important to to highlight that knowledge
02:51and I I'm honestly blown away by their generosity of time and knowledge and experience and then how would
02:58you approach a GP if you have any advice regarding that yeah that's a big question um so yeah tracking
03:05your symptoms knowing kind of what the effective routes are whilst also understanding that it's very
03:12individualized so what one person had work for them might be very very different for you um but knowing
03:18that kind of broad sense of of what can work and what is available I think is really important and then having
03:24someone with you in the room as well I'd say those were my top three you shouldn't have to take somebody
03:30with you to to be believed or to get a different treatment um but from experience not just my own
03:37but from the hundreds thousands of people I speak to taking someone with them helps um for me personally I
03:45hate even more that it was my husband that was the biggest game changer for me having a man in the
03:49room did help um not always he has now witnessed quite a few instances of medical gaslighting that I think has
03:57deepened his understanding and helped our communication as well but it's I think when you
04:01you hear take someone with you you immediately think oh so they'll talk for me or you know and they don't
04:07have to if you want them to talk they can um you know there's all sorts of roles that having a person in the room can do
04:14and and that's probably one of the ones that I've found most effective in terms of things to look
04:20out for there are some really really common ones um the first one you know although we know that it's
04:26not a period condition is that heavy painful periods you know especially pain that impacts daily life
04:33is a really really common one
