00:00What's up with one-fifth, as I mentioned earlier, of the Backstreet Boys.
00:04It was also 25% of the panel of experts in Netflix's newest singing competition building the band.
00:09AJ McClain plays O's on the show, which whittles 50 individuals down to one winning band.
00:15Now, the twist is the rub.
00:17The singers have to bond without laying eyes on each other and only hearing each other's voices.
00:23How the hell age is, who knows no stranger to all about life, under Lynn Backstreet Boys for three decades
00:28is selling more than 130 million records worldwide.
00:31We asked him what drew him into this format and whether it brought back any memories.
00:41This is building the band!
00:45Good morning, Britton.
00:47I think the draw for me was these individuals putting themselves together,
00:54not being put together like other shows have done in the past.
00:57We invited 50 singers to take part in the music experience.
01:03Relying on chemistry, compatibility, and raw talent.
01:08You know, obviously there's going to be a little bit of drama.
01:10I mean, there's no way not to have that.
01:12We've got plenty of drama in our 32-year career.
01:15It was definitely nostalgic for me to kind of go back 32 years and go, wow, yeah, this is oddly familiar to me.
01:27Now, joining AJ as all the show's experts was One Direction star Liam Payne.
01:36Of course, Liam, as we know, sadly died last year.
01:38And this was the final project he'd filmed before his tragic death.
01:41Now, the series begins with AJ dedicating the show to Liam,
01:44celebrating how much music meant to the X Factor star.
01:48And AJ shared how he felt about Liam with us.
01:50We had met over the years.
01:53This was the most one-on-one time that him and I ever really had together.
01:58And it was like we had been friends forever.
02:01Our lives were very parallel.
02:03He lit up every room that he walked into.
02:05He played me his unreleased album, asked me for advice on it.
02:09And I was like, you don't need my advice, bro.
02:11You've got it on lock.
02:12But it was really sweet that he would ask me almost like a big brother, if you will.
02:17It's devastating, but I get it, you know.
02:20I mean, I've had my bouts with addiction.
02:24Fortunately, I've been able to come out the other side.
02:26For some of us, that's not always the case.
02:29But his legacy will live on through this show and through his music
02:33and through his fans and through his family.
02:36And so it was an honor and a true privilege to work with him.
02:38Well said, it's going to be a point of watch, obviously, for friends and family.
02:43And our thoughts continue to be with them all too tragic to my eyes all too soon.
02:47But the legacy lives on.
02:49And I'm sure it'll be the perfect sponsor, as much as you can have for Liam, as we remember him.
02:55So Building the Band is on Netflix now and the final three episodes drop next Wednesday,
02:59the 23rd of July, because we know how keen you are to get dates in your diary.
03:03I like to write them down.
03:04You do like to write them down.
03:05Yeah, I do.
03:06Pen and paper, none of this digital nonsense.
03:09Lovely to see you.
03:10Still become.
