00:31This is your space. Invite everybody else in.
00:34Better than that, fantastic.
00:35Liam Payne made his name on a singing competition,
00:38so there were few better to judge the next generation of stars.
00:43Wow.
00:43The 31-year-old film for Netflix's new show, Building the Band,
00:47just weeks before his death last October.
00:49I was having a drink.
00:50The former One Direction member had been open about his issues with addiction,
00:54something he spoke about on set with series host,
00:57and Backstreet Boy, AJ McLean.
00:59We talked all the time, we hung all the time,
01:02talked about everything from sobriety, life, music.
01:08We actually had a lot of parallels.
01:10We had kind of gone down very similar paths in our personal life,
01:15and he just was an absolute light.
01:17He lit up the room when he walked in.
01:19Payne's family were consulted before the show's release.
01:22His sister Nicola posted online saying,
01:25You were made to be a judge, to guide, to encourage,
01:28and to let your voice be heard.
01:30This show will forever hold a special place in my heart,
01:33because it's one of the last times I saw you,
01:35and I got to witness you shine so brightly.
01:37What are you looking for tonight?
01:39Host AJ said taking part was an opportunity to be honest
01:42about some of the challenges of the industry.
01:44It was a breath of fresh air to be able to give a little bit of insight
01:48and a little bit of knowledge.
01:50You know, we were kind of the guinea pigs,
01:53you know, dealing with managers that were double dipping,
01:57label having complete control,
01:59and really just kind of grinding us to the bone.
02:03It was pretty much nine years straight with no breaks.
02:05Building the band's unique
02:09in that singers first choose their group without seeing any faces,
02:13later meeting properly, and performing live.
02:16It's like watching, like, the MTV Awards or, like, the Grammys.
02:19Like, that was the level that they brought,
02:22every single group brought,
02:24and I was blown away.
02:25The final three episodes are out next week.
02:28The hosts and judges preparing contestants for what's to come
02:31as they chase their dreams.
02:33Richie Dabda, ITV News.
02:34And finally, listen.
