Wales has faced some of the longest NHS waiting times of anywhere in the United Kingdom, and the Welsh government hope that they can improve ambulance responses with a colour system prioritising the most in need, that includes a new ‘orange: time sensitive’ category for victims of a stroke.

00:00Across the board, issues with waiting times in the NHS in Wales have been a major concern
00:06for some time, from long-term surgical waits, to delays in GP surgeries, to hours-long ambulance
00:12call-outs. Right now in Wales, around 70% of those ambulance calls fall into the AMBA category,
00:18a broad grouping that covers a wide range of conditions. But that's set to change,
00:22and in new plans from the Welsh Government, the AMBA category will now be replaced and
00:26include new categories to help better prioritise patient responses. The Government says that this
00:31will make the system more responsive, with people suffering from strokes or STEMIs, a serious type
00:36of heart attack, now classified under the new orange category. These are considered time-sensitive
00:41emergencies, and Ministers say the change will give patients the best possible chance of survival and
00:46recovery. It follows a number of recent changes to the way ambulance calls are triaged in Wales.
00:51Just earlier this month, a new purple category was introduced to cover the most crucial cases
00:56like cardiac and respiratory arrest. That sits alongside a red category, used for major trauma
01:01that could lead to arrest. For these most serious emergencies, purple and red, target response
01:07times remain at an average of between six and eight minutes, with no targeted response times
01:12for other categories. Health Minister Jeremy Miles said for people in stroke, every minute counts
01:18if lives are to be saved and disability reduced or prevented. With each passing minute, around two
01:23million brain cells are lost. Wales continues to have the worst ambulance response times
01:27in the UK, with record-breaking waiting lists earlier this year. It's an issue affecting thousands
01:32of people and families across the country, and the hope is that this latest change could help
01:37ease the pressure on the system and, ultimately, save lives. James Peach Watkins, reporting for Local TV.
