Heavy downpours possibly thundery across western areas as cloudy and wet weather feeding in from the southwest overnight. This will spread further east during the day, but dry and sunny towards the north and east in the morning. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the morning of 17/07/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Alex Burkill.
00:00Hello, very good morning to you. Watch out across western parts today because here we have the greatest risk of some heavy, possibly even thundery downpours.
00:09That's because there's a swathe of cloudier, wet weather that's been feeding in from the southwest overnight.
00:14Now it is going to spread further east as we go through the day, but clinging on to more sunshine through large chunks of the morning and into the afternoon across some northern and eastern parts.
00:24But even here, the cloud will arrive later and one or two spots of rain are quite possible.
00:30Further west, though, this is where we have the greatest risk of those heavy, thundery downpours, especially western parts of Northern Ireland could see some intense downpours with 10 to 20 millimetres in just an hour or so, 30 to 40 millimetres plus, perhaps over a few hours.
00:44And there's the risk of hail, risk of lightning, all to make things a little bit difficult, particularly on the roads at times.
00:51Also across western parts of Scotland, there will be some heavy, thundery downpours arriving here as we go through, particularly the latter part of the afternoon.
00:58As and as we head into the evening, temperature wise, well, it's likely to be a little bit warmer than yesterday for many of us.
01:05We're looking at highs around 28, 29 Celsius towards the southeast and widely in the low to mid 20s for most.
01:11If you're under the cloud and the rain, though, it's going to feel a little bit cooler than this.
01:15And also there are some strong blustery winds towards northern and western parts, lighter winds towards the southeast.
01:20As we go through the evening and overnight, like I said, some heavy, thundery downpours affecting western parts of Scotland,
01:27still some across parts of Northern Ireland for a little while yet, and more showery rain across generally northern and western areas as we go overnight.
01:35Further south and east, a greater chance of staying dry, some clearer skies here, but it is going to be a warm, muggy night for most of us.
01:42It's quite uncomfortable for sleeping for some, I imagine, because temperatures really only dropping to mid to high teens in a few places could even be a little bit warmer than that for some of us.
01:52So, yes, a very warm start to the day on Friday.
01:56Through the day itself, then, quite a messy picture.
01:59Further outbreaks of showery rain here and there, always worth bearing in mind that by their very nature showers, they're hit and miss.
02:05So, not everywhere will necessarily see them, but they're going to be more frequent towards the north and west.
02:10Northern Ireland, again, at risk of seeing some thundery downpours, though they perhaps look slightly less intense compared to the heavy bursts that we're expecting through today.
02:20Further south and east, a greater chance of staying dry, some decent sunshine on offer, and with that, temperatures even higher than today.
02:26There's a good chance we're going to get back into the low 30s, so a lot of heat around, high humidity as well, quite uncomfortable for some of us.
02:34Towards the north and west, again, a touch fresher, temperatures nearer average for the time of year, but nonetheless feeling relatively warm,
02:41especially if you catch any bright or sunny spells in between those scattered showers.
02:46As we go into the weekend, and with the heat and the humidity that we have across us, well, there's a fairly strong chance that we're going to see some heavy,
02:54perhaps even thundery rain feeding up from the south, and that's likely to become pretty widespread across much of the country as we go through Saturday and into Sunday.
03:03With that, then, whilst Saturday could still be very warm or hot, particularly towards the south, I am expecting temperatures to drop,
03:09so turning a bit cooler, a bit fresher, a bit more comfortable, perhaps, as we go through the latter part of the weekend.
