Josh Taylor discusses Terry McLaurin's contract situation with the Washington Commanders!
Transcript
00:00Terry McLaurin does not sound happy with the Washington Commanders regarding his contract
00:04situation. So what does that mean? Let's talk about it. The Commander's main storyline going
00:12into training camp has been to figure out this contract extension with Terry McLaurin and give
00:17him a contract that he really believes he deserves. Terry spoke for the first time about the situation
00:22and he said straight up, I'm frustrated. He feels like that he's been disrespected throughout the
00:28process and things have not progressed the way that he thought they would. He said him and his
00:32camp have not spoken with Washington regarding a new contract for a month now, which is very glaring
00:38to me when you're talking about a star player, a leader of your team who has been here through the
00:42good and through the bad. Terry's a fan favorite. He's active in the community and he's produced with
00:48every single quarterback that he's had. Terry said the offseason was going great. The team was
00:53disconnected. The offense was clicking. He loved the new additions. The vibes were high on the team
00:58and then all of a sudden everything just kind of stopped. The talks stalemated and they didn't
01:03progress the way that he really expected it to. And he said, look, that's when things really changed
01:08for me. That's why I'm not at mandatory mini camp. And you see these reports that I'm frustrated with
01:13the process. That was me putting that out there. It's true. I'm frustrated. Now there's two things to
01:18look at. You have Washington side and their perspective. Then you have Terry McLaurin and
01:22his camp. Now, if you're Washington, you're looking at it on paper. You're looking at it from a data and
01:27analytics side. Terry McLaurin is a wide receiver who's going to be 30 in September. Are you going
01:33to give him a big contract like Garrett Wilson just got? Probably not because Terry is almost 30,
01:38but he still is your best player. And he has been a number one wide receiver in this league for a while
01:44now. Now from Terry's side of things, he said, look, this is a case by case basis. I know father
01:49time's undefeated, but I'm not just a 30 year old wide receiver. I just had my best season of my
01:55career. He's coming off of 82 catches for 1096 yards and a franchise single season record 13 receiving
02:02touchdowns. I can't tell you how many games Washington won this season alone because of big
02:07time plays by Terry McLaurin and Jayden Daniels. And he said, look, we need each other. Jayden Daniels
02:13has shown me a ton of support. Other teammates have reached out. I know my teammates have my back
02:17and I really want to be out there with them. But look, when it comes down to it, the pressure's on
02:21for Washington. Now, Terry said, look, things haven't hit rock bottom yet. I'm not thinking
02:27about a trade. I'm not thinking about playing for another team. I want to be here, but honestly,
02:32I want clarity. I know the team's going to do what's best for them. I get that. But if I'm not part
02:38of the long-term plan, then tell me that. So it sounds like there hasn't been any communication
02:43with the team and Terry, and I would be frustrated too. You are the star player of the team. You've
02:48been here for a while. You are involved with everything. You should be getting some kind
02:52of clarity of what's going on. So for Washington, you're really right now, just breaking it down to,
02:57look, this is his last contract of his career. He wants to retire here. Is it the guarantees? Is it
03:03the years? Is it the money? What is the thing that's holding them back from Terry McLaurin?
03:08Maybe it is because he's 30 years old and they don't want to give him a four-year deal. Maybe
03:11they just want to give him a three-year deal. Whatever that number looks like, maybe they're
03:15going to base it off of DK Metcalf's deal and not Garrett Wilson's deal, who Garrett Wilson is much
03:20younger than Terry, obviously. But for Terry, he said, look, it's not just about the money for me.
03:25I know what my value is as a person, as a leader, but I have to stand strong and stand my ground
03:30and show my value money-wise as well. Not only for me, but for my family and my future family.
03:36So with a training camp around the corner, Terry coming out and speaking for the first time like
03:40this is huge. This is him and his camp putting pressure on Washington saying, hey, time's ticking.
03:46What's going on? Now is the time. This is crunch time. Let's get it done. Terry wants to be out there
03:52with training camp. He wants to be involved and he doesn't want to miss time with his teammates.
03:56So for Washington, the pressure's on for them to get this done now and not have his drag out longer
04:02than it needs to be. And the ball is really in their court.
