00:00Morning to you. Right, so in one of the biggest scandals of recent history, the government's been running a secret evacuation and resettlement scheme for thousands of Afghans.
00:09That's after up to 100,000 lives, including those who served alongside the British military, were put at risk by the Ministry of Defence following a major data breach.
00:18In a bid to keep the scandal hidden for years from you, the public, the previous Conservative government used an unprecedented super injunction in the courts to stop it being reported by the media.
00:29So let's have a look at some of the numbers here. It's a little bit complicated, this story.
00:33A total of 6,900 Afghans will or have already been resettled in the UK due to the breach at a cost to the taxpayer of £850 million.
00:47Now, the original amount that we believe was budgeted was £7 billion, but that has not been reached as the scheme has now closed.
00:53And in February 2022, the personal details of nearly 19,000 people who had applied to move to the UK after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, after Joe Biden's botched evacuation, were leaked in an email.
01:06That's right. So Defence Secretary John Healy spoke to GB News just a few moments ago.
01:10This is a huge data breach that had never been disclosed. It led to the previous government setting up a secret resettlement scheme bringing Afghans into this country and covered all by a totally unprecedented super injunction.
01:27So the story here for me, Bev, isn't the data leak as such. Yes, it's bad, but we've kind of become accustomed to that kind of thing.
01:35Yeah. When I heard the story of a data leak initially yesterday, I think you mentioned it as well.
01:39You thought, oh, another NHS thing or MOD thing, fine. The story for me is the fact that the government was happy to, at one point, estimating it would need to spend £7 billion.
01:49The figure now is £850 million. But they were preparing, if they were going to have 100,000 Afghanis and their family members come over to the UK,
01:58to spend £7 billion of your money secretly airlifting 100,000 Afghan nationals into the country without telling you the electorate.
02:07And when the media tried to report on it, they tried covering it up. That, for me, is the story.
02:11And it begs the question now is, if the government can behave like that, spending your money unaccounted for,
02:17doing something so drastically epic that would change the very fabric of your communities, where would these people go?
02:23You weren't even being told about it. What else are they not telling you about?
