00:02:33Und so there was a big party that night
00:02:35and the next morning they got up
00:02:37they didn't see the ocean
00:02:40because they were in Missouri
00:02:41Blaine was able to convince them for a little while
00:02:46that it was just low tide and things
00:02:47but what had happened was that he had made some mistakes
00:02:49bad weather, wasn't familiar perhaps with the proper route
00:02:52but as it turns out everybody was quite happy
00:02:54to be where they were
00:02:55so they said it's okay we didn't make it to California
00:02:57we'll stay here
00:02:58and that's why I'm at this desk
00:03:01Well I'm very proud to say
00:03:03that I'm a direct descendant of Blaine Fabin
00:03:06I've lived here all my life
00:03:08as did my parents
00:03:10and their parents and their parents
00:03:11and their parents
00:03:12and so on and so forth
00:03:14I'm very excited about the show coming up
00:03:17because it'll be the first time
00:03:19I'll have the experience of sitting in the audience
00:03:22and seeing actors portray my ancestor
00:03:27the actual Blaine Fabin
00:03:30Being a Fabin is not always easy
00:03:33I can certainly understand how the Kennedys feel
00:03:37I had been living in New York
00:03:41and working there as an actor and director and choreographer
00:03:44for 25 years or so
00:03:46and I really felt I needed a change
00:03:48I imagined in my fantasy I suppose
00:03:51that when I came here
00:03:53I would have a completely different life
00:03:56perhaps a construction worker
00:04:00or one of those guys that works on those high wire things
00:04:05with a hard hat
00:04:07you know that sweeping sort of hat
00:04:09and with the chaps
00:04:11but that didn't really work out
00:04:15I began to realize I guess
00:04:17that the theater was still in my blood
00:04:19and what I had to do was make use of that
00:04:22so I offered my services to the high school here
00:04:26and they accepted
00:04:27and I began to teach drama
00:04:29and within about six months
00:04:31I had formed the Blaine Community Players
00:04:34I gotta tell you
00:04:35we are very very excited about the big show
00:04:37that's happening at the end of the festival
00:04:39everyone right now is just going crazy getting ready to audition
00:04:43and unfortunately I won't be able to audition
00:04:46we have to stock that day and can't get out of it
00:04:49and Corky will not let me audition any other time
00:04:53so that's show business is what he told me
00:04:55and you know he's the master
00:04:57you gotta give him credit for that
00:04:58President McKinley did a whistle stop tour back in 1898
00:05:02and a little boy Jimmy McBean made a stool for him
00:05:06and he loved it so much that he called back and said
00:05:09look it I would like to give more of these to dignitaries who are visiting
00:05:12and before you knew it
00:05:15Blaine is manufacturing all these footstools
00:05:18and that's how the big
00:05:20that's how we got the stool boom
00:05:22Blaine became the stool capital of the world
00:05:25my first show was Barefoot in the Park
00:05:29which was an absolute smash
00:05:31but my production on the stage of Backdraft
00:05:34was what really got them excited
00:05:36this whole idea of in your face theater
00:05:40really affected them
00:05:41the conceptualization
00:05:43the whole abstraction
00:05:44the obtuseness of this production to me was what was interesting
00:05:49I wanted the audience to feel the heat from the fire
00:05:53the fear because people don't like fire poked
00:05:57poked in their noses
00:05:58you know when you get a cinder from barbecue
00:06:00right on the end of your nose
00:06:01and you kind of make that little face
00:06:03that's not a good thing
00:06:05I wanted to have the sense memory of that
00:06:08so during the show
00:06:10I had someone burn newspapers
00:06:12and send it through the vents in the theater
00:06:14well they freaked out
00:06:17of course the fire marshal came over
00:06:19and they shut us down for a couple of days
00:06:22Mr. Blustein Montezuma's revenge
00:06:24is nothing more than good old fashioned American diarrhea
00:06:28adult diapers should never even enter the picture
00:06:32so you lose a few pounds
00:06:35my mom used to say that Blaine is a little town
00:06:38with a big heart in the heart of a big country
00:06:42and uh to me Blaine is a kind of town
00:06:44where I can have my own business
00:06:46meet and marry a wonderful woman like Sheila
00:06:49and and be something
00:06:52be somebody
00:06:53some people find it ironical
00:06:56that even though we run a travel agency
00:06:58we've never been outside of Blaine
00:06:59with one exception
00:07:01well
00:07:02we've never been out of Blaine
00:07:04well I went
00:07:05to Jefferson City once
00:07:07it was a
00:07:08tell them what?
00:07:09it was a medical reason
00:07:10you can tell them
00:07:14it's just minor surgery
00:07:16I've been working here at the DQ
00:07:23for about
00:07:24um
00:07:24eight months
00:07:29seven
00:07:30I don't know
00:07:32something like that
00:07:33it's fine
00:07:33just do the cones
00:07:35make sundays
00:07:37make blizzards
00:07:38and
00:07:38put stuff on them
00:07:40and
00:07:41see a lot of people come in
00:07:44a lot of people come to the DQ
00:07:45burgers
00:07:46ice cream
00:07:48anything
00:07:49you know
00:07:50Cokes
00:07:52just drive in and get a Coke
00:07:54if you're thirsty
00:07:55everybody thinks
00:07:57that Roswell
00:07:59was the first sighting
00:08:00of a UFO in the United States
00:08:01and that's bull roar
00:08:02we had the first sighting here in 1946
00:08:05and it wasn't just a sighting
00:08:07it didn't even fly by
00:08:08they stopped
00:08:09they landed
00:08:10the people in Blaine
00:08:11went on board the ship
00:08:12for a potluck dinner
00:08:13I've been coming out
00:08:15to this landing site
00:08:16every day
00:08:17for two years
00:08:18to measure it
00:08:20and here's the thing
00:08:22the circumference
00:08:24and the diameter
00:08:25change
00:08:26by a few inches
00:08:27yet the radius
00:08:29remains the same
00:08:30which brings me back
00:08:32to the number five
00:08:33there are five letters
00:08:34in the name
00:08:35Blaine
00:08:36mix the word Blaine up
00:08:37or mix it around
00:08:39eventually
00:08:39you'll get Nabali
00:08:41Nabali
00:08:42the name
00:08:43of the planet
00:08:44in a galaxy
00:08:45way way
00:08:46way
00:08:48far away
00:08:49I'll tell you another thing
00:08:50once you step inside
00:08:51this circle
00:08:52the weather
00:08:54never changes
00:08:56it is always
00:08:5767 degrees
00:08:58with a 40%
00:09:00chance of rain
00:09:01always
00:09:02I love to make people laugh
00:09:05and I've been doing it
00:09:06since
00:09:07you know
00:09:08school
00:09:09people ask me
00:09:10were you
00:09:10you know
00:09:11you must have been
00:09:13the class clown
00:09:14and I say
00:09:16no I wasn't
00:09:18but I sat beside
00:09:20the class clown
00:09:21and I
00:09:22I studied him
00:09:23and
00:09:24and saw
00:09:25how he made
00:09:26people laugh
00:09:27and so I picked
00:09:28some things up
00:09:29and you know
00:09:30and at parties
00:09:31and family functions
00:09:32I have to say
00:09:33I love
00:09:35you know
00:09:35breaking people up
00:09:36so
00:09:37there's a thing
00:09:38that I think
00:09:38I got
00:09:39an entertaining bug
00:09:41from my grandfather
00:09:44Chaim Perlgut
00:09:45who was
00:09:46very very big
00:09:47in the
00:09:48Yiddish theater
00:09:50back in New York
00:09:51he was in the
00:09:52the very
00:09:53the sardonically
00:09:54irreverent
00:09:55Dibbick Shmibbick
00:09:57I Said More Ham
00:09:59and that review
00:10:01I believe
00:10:02was 1914
00:10:03and that
00:10:03review
00:10:04is what made him famous
00:10:06incidentally
00:10:07the song
00:10:08Bubi Medekishka
00:10:10came from that review
00:10:12my father
00:10:13bless him
00:10:14brought me into the
00:10:15into the business
00:10:16this was his dental practice
00:10:18before
00:10:19and I joke with my wife
00:10:21that you know
00:10:22at that point
00:10:23that's when the
00:10:24the money started
00:10:25rolling in
00:10:28you know
00:10:28brave making
00:10:31more wampum
00:10:34to buy pelts

00:10:39happy squaw
00:10:40and wigwam
00:10:41happy as mongoose
00:10:43that
00:10:45is of course
00:10:48from Johnny Carson
00:10:49who
00:10:49one of my
00:10:51heroes
00:10:51in a very funny bit
00:10:53when I see
00:10:54lips waiting
00:10:55to be kissed
00:10:57I can't stop
00:10:59I can't stop
00:11:00for that lightning

00:17:49you know
00:17:49we started talking
00:17:50about pantyhose
00:17:53she was saying
00:17:54whatever
00:17:55that's not the point
00:17:56of the story
00:17:56but what the point is
00:17:58was that
00:17:58through this
00:17:59accidental meeting
00:18:01it's like you know
00:18:02it's like a Hitchcock movie
00:18:04where you know
00:18:04you're thrown into
00:18:05a rubber bag
00:18:06and put in
00:18:07the trunk of a car
00:18:08you find people
00:18:11you find them
00:18:13something
00:18:14is it karma
00:18:15maybe
00:18:17but we found him
00:18:21that's the important thing
00:18:22and I got Bonnie
00:18:23a wonderful pantsuit
00:18:25they took me off
00:18:26into a separate room
00:18:27I seen him taking
00:18:28different people off
00:18:29different ones of us
00:18:30off in separate rooms
00:18:31and put me on
00:18:33a big white table
00:18:33and
00:18:35the guy that
00:18:36took me there
00:18:37the one of them
00:18:38that took me in there
00:18:39to examine me
00:18:41I guess
00:18:41he probed me
00:18:42and then
00:18:42I was in there
00:18:43I bet more than
00:18:45three or four hours
00:18:46in that room
00:18:46of being probed
00:18:47and at one
00:18:48time or another
00:18:49there's different ones
00:18:51of them come in
00:18:51four, five, six
00:18:52of them at different times
00:18:53and all of them probed me
00:18:55not all at once
00:18:57you know
00:18:57individually
00:18:58later on
00:19:00years later
00:19:01now even still
00:19:02it's a funny thing
00:19:04it happened on a Sunday
00:19:06and every Sunday
00:19:07about the time
00:19:08that I was taken
00:19:08on board
00:19:09that ship
00:19:10I find I have
00:19:13no feelings
00:19:14in my buttocks
00:19:15Casting a show
00:19:17is really only
00:19:18the beginning
00:19:19of the process
00:19:20there's also
00:19:21the whole design concept
00:19:23what fabrics
00:19:25will work
00:19:25for the costumes
00:19:26the lighting
00:19:27and it really
00:19:29becomes a
00:19:30wrestling match
00:19:31I guess
00:19:31between me
00:19:32and the muse
00:19:33of theatre
00:19:34and most of all
00:19:36dance
00:19:53I'd like you to
00:19:55close your eyes
00:19:56now
00:19:56and I'd like you
00:19:57to try something
00:19:57alright
00:19:58what are you thinking
00:19:59what are you feeling
00:20:00right now
00:20:00with your eyes closed
00:20:01I feel a
00:20:05you're blowing
00:20:07in my ear
00:20:08ok
00:20:08alright
00:20:08you see you jumped
00:20:09to a conclusion
00:20:10oh
00:20:10see what I'm asking
00:20:11for is
00:20:12your first feeling
00:20:13was not that
00:20:15I was blowing
00:20:15on you
00:20:16it was more like
00:20:17Virgin Isles
00:20:19or Bahamanian
00:20:21or Arubian
00:20:23or
00:20:24yeah
00:20:25he's at his rehearsal
00:20:26he's at his first rehearsal
00:20:27I don't know what they're doing
00:20:29because I'd never been to one before
00:20:30but I bet they're just
00:20:32you know
00:20:33introducing themselves
00:20:34to each other
00:20:34you know
00:20:34it's going to be nice
00:20:36to meet some of these
00:20:37new folks
00:20:39because
00:20:39we don't
00:20:40socialize with
00:20:41the creative types
00:20:43you know
00:20:43we got our
00:20:43Scrabble Club
00:20:44and stuff
00:20:45and
00:20:46you know
00:20:48and other
00:20:49people with babies
00:20:50well the exercises
00:20:58all mean something
00:21:00even if you don't know
00:21:01what
00:21:02Dr. Pearl
00:21:04he'll come around
00:21:06and
00:21:06he'll learn
00:21:08like
00:21:09Ron and Sheila
00:21:11and I have learned
00:21:12that Corky has a vision
00:21:14I
00:21:29I'm walking
00:21:43on air
00:21:44you know
00:21:45I'm
00:21:46this is a sensation
00:21:47which is
00:21:47forget it
00:21:48when I became a dentist
00:21:50I thought I was happy
00:21:51but this is
00:21:52this is making me nervous now
00:21:54because I
00:21:54I could have wasted
00:21:56a lot of years
00:21:57I must say
00:21:58I was very shocked
00:21:59to see that Dr. Pearl
00:22:00had actually been cast
00:22:01then I thought
00:22:03well we're in a glamour
00:22:04profession
00:22:05being travel agents
00:22:06and he isn't
00:22:06in such a glamorous
00:22:07you know
00:22:08one thing
00:22:08one project
00:22:09we have to loosen him up
00:22:10I have a feeling
00:22:11he's a little tight
00:22:11he's particularly
00:22:13when he's around us
00:22:14probably
00:22:14I don't think
00:22:14he'll mind jokes
00:22:15you're intimidating Ron
00:22:16because you
00:22:17you have so much experience
00:22:19I know
00:22:19Ron is going to help
00:22:20everyone act
00:22:21because I know
00:22:22Ron gives me
00:22:23well in all the productions
00:22:24we've been in
00:22:25and when we do
00:22:26scene studies
00:22:26at home together
00:22:27Ron will have
00:22:29extensive
00:22:29you know
00:22:30hour
00:22:31two hour sessions
00:22:32of notes for me
00:22:33and it's so helpful
00:22:34lately
00:22:34it's notes for both of us
00:22:36no but lately
00:22:36just that you get
00:22:37most of them
00:22:38he's trying to help me
00:22:39to change my instincts
00:22:40or at least ignore them
00:22:41listen let me
00:22:44let me tell you
00:22:45why I'm here
00:22:46we're doing a show
00:22:47I won't beat around
00:22:49the bush
00:22:49we're doing a show
00:22:49that I've written
00:22:50about the 150th anniversary

00:22:53and I know you're
00:22:53an old Blainean
00:22:54yes
00:22:56and you're really right
00:22:58for one of the parts
00:22:59it's the narrator
00:23:00in the show
00:23:02one of the actor parts
00:23:04yeah

00:23:09history in show business
00:23:11well you know
00:23:12I did have a

00:23:35as you can see
00:23:36oh I love all the
00:23:38the work you've done
00:23:39that's a little

00:23:54but I'm looking
00:23:55for another actor
00:23:57and I was wondering
00:23:57if you had any interest
00:23:58in participating
00:23:59in the show
00:24:00does that appeal
00:24:02to you in any way
00:24:03I'm not much
00:24:04of an actor
00:24:04I'm sorry
00:24:05no I mean

00:26:51there's a stool
00:26:52there's a stool
00:26:53the stools are there
00:26:54as upon a time
00:26:56you'd find a chair
00:26:57a chair's for fools
00:26:59everybody wants
00:27:01tools to wear
00:27:04from the parlor
00:27:05to the pool room
00:27:07everyone knows
00:27:08everyone knows our name
00:27:10everyone knows our name

00:27:15oh my goodness
00:27:16never breathing
00:27:18working
00:27:18I don't want to interfere
00:27:25but I think it would be
00:27:28I think we have to work
00:27:33I can't hear you
00:27:33I think we have to work on the music a little bit more
00:27:36fine
00:27:37but I don't want to make trouble
00:27:39so
00:27:40and I don't really want to do this in front of them
00:27:43but I think
00:27:45where do you want to do it
00:27:46well I think we have to sit down
00:27:48and make a schedule
00:27:50that includes
00:27:52some music time
00:27:53because I think
00:27:54Gene and I
00:27:56have to work
00:27:57why are you whispering
00:27:58I'm right here
00:28:00you know
00:28:01I don't know
00:28:02I'm sorry
00:28:02do you want me to talk louder
00:28:03because I think
00:28:07that
00:28:08well now it's too loud
00:28:09you know
00:28:10just talk like a normal person
00:28:12okay
00:28:13I think
00:28:14what they were doing was good
00:28:16well
00:28:16to me
00:28:17you rehearse
00:28:17you rehearse
00:28:18you get it perfect
00:28:19you know exactly what you're doing
00:28:21and then you forget about it
00:28:22let me pinpoint you
00:28:23you said
00:28:24they learn it
00:28:25they forget it
00:28:25and that's okay
00:28:26that's great
00:28:27well they've forgotten it
00:28:29but they never learned it
00:28:30so when do they learn it
00:28:31I'm just saying
00:28:32when do we have a time
00:28:33but what I'm saying
00:28:34is if they're going to forget it anyway
00:28:35then what difference does it make
00:28:36I mean
00:28:37you see what I mean
00:28:38it's just like
00:28:38it's like one of those
00:28:39it's like a
00:28:40it's like a
00:28:41it's a zen thing
00:28:42it's like you know
00:28:43you know
00:28:44how many babies
00:28:45you know
00:28:46fit
00:28:46in the tire
00:28:48thing
00:28:49that whole
00:28:49the old joke
00:28:50you know
00:28:50no you have a point
00:28:53it's an interesting point
00:28:55and how'd you find this place
00:28:56well we've been
00:28:59coming here
00:29:01for many many years
00:29:02oh yeah
00:29:03we come every Thursday
00:29:04well with the rehearsals
00:29:05you won't be able to now
00:29:06this is true
00:29:08you know in China
00:29:09they will kill a monkey
00:29:10at the table
00:29:10and split its head
00:29:11over and eat the brains
00:29:12right out of it
00:29:13we had friends
00:29:17Barbara and Bruce
00:29:18remember
00:29:18who went to China
00:29:20and I'm sure
00:29:21you're in the travel business
00:29:22that you've been there
00:29:23but they went to Peking
00:29:24where they make the ducks
00:29:25and what they say
00:29:26is that the food over there

00:32:21wow
00:32:21what does this mean
00:32:23Corky
00:32:24what it means is
00:32:25we may be going
00:32:27to Broadway
00:32:28my aunt
00:32:39I brought out
00:32:40her atlas
00:32:40that I look at a lot
00:32:42this big blue book
00:32:43and opened up
00:32:45to New York
00:32:46and it's an island
00:32:46is really what it is
00:32:48it's this island
00:32:50full of people
00:32:51of different colors
00:32:54and different ideas
00:32:55and I can't
00:32:56it sounds like
00:32:57a lot of fun to me
00:32:58you know
00:32:59we don't see much
00:33:00of that
00:33:00in Blaine
00:33:02I like to
00:33:03maybe meet some guys
00:33:06and Italian guys
00:33:08or you know
00:33:10watch TV and stuff
00:33:11I'm going to be glad
00:33:12to do the show
00:33:13on Broadway
00:33:14and there will probably
00:33:14be other offers
00:33:15keeping our fingers crossed
00:33:17but I don't know
00:33:18if the theater
00:33:19and the stage
00:33:20is for me
00:33:20for one thing
00:33:21there's an awful lot
00:33:22of memorizing
00:33:23of lines
00:33:24and I think
00:33:25and I think
00:33:26you know what I'm thinking
00:33:27the ultimate goal
00:33:28Hollywood
00:33:29even when I was a kid
00:33:31doing my impressions
00:33:32here's looking at you babe
00:33:34and you don't care
00:33:38about anyone
00:33:39but yourself
00:33:40who is it
00:33:42Henry Fonda
00:33:43I always have to tell her
00:33:44who I'm doing
00:33:44she always laughs
00:33:45but now who is that
00:33:46but I think
00:33:47back there
00:33:48there's always the germ
00:33:49in my mind
00:33:49that that's where
00:33:50I'd end up
00:33:50on the silver screen
00:33:51and you got the face
00:33:53for it too darling
00:33:54you know
00:33:55I want to try
00:33:55that less is more
00:33:56kind of acting
00:33:57where you just
00:33:58when you're talking
00:33:59to someone
00:33:59you close your eyes
00:34:00and then you look
00:34:01at them
00:34:02when you're not
00:34:02talking to the person
00:34:03I mean you open
00:34:04your eyes
00:34:04when you're looking
00:34:05away but then
00:34:06when you talk
00:34:06to the person
00:34:06you go like that
00:34:07and you open your eyes
00:34:08and then you look
00:34:08back at the person
00:34:09but you never
00:34:09open your eyes
00:34:10when you're talking
00:34:10to them
00:34:11the Guffman news
00:34:12is really big
00:34:12and I don't
00:34:15truthfully think
00:34:16that the cast
00:34:16understand
00:34:17how big
00:34:19they don't know
00:34:20the New York thing
00:34:21they haven't been
00:34:22through it
00:34:22and I have
00:34:23you know
00:34:23so it is
00:34:24kind of on my shoulders
00:34:25and going to the Big Apple
00:34:29for the first time
00:34:30you know
00:34:31is such an experience
00:34:33you never forget it
00:34:34it stays with you
00:34:35for your whole life
00:34:35me
00:34:37you know
00:34:37right out of the Navy
00:34:38you know
00:34:38fresh off a destroyer
00:34:40with a dance belt
00:34:42and a tube of chapstick
00:34:43basically
00:34:44you know
00:34:44not really much
00:34:45to call my own
00:34:46and then
00:34:46basically being slammed
00:34:48down for
00:34:49ten or so years
00:34:51you know
00:34:52off
00:34:52off
00:34:52off
00:34:53off
00:34:53off
00:34:53Broadway
00:34:54and then
00:34:54enough
00:34:54is enough
00:34:55okay
00:34:55I get the joke
00:34:56and
00:34:57is that going to happen again
00:34:59I don't know
00:35:00I mean
00:35:00and I don't want it to happen again
00:35:01in my deepest
00:35:03deepest
00:35:03of hearts
00:35:04I do not want it to happen again
00:35:05Mr. Guffman brings with him
00:35:08a reputation
00:35:09something
00:35:10bigger than anyone
00:35:11in this town
00:35:12has ever known
00:35:13and
00:35:14if I am to get back
00:35:15to New York City
00:35:16on my terms
00:35:17I cannot deliver him
00:35:19a stinky product
00:35:21I really have to be
00:35:22presenting him
00:35:24a package
00:35:25a beautifully
00:35:26wrapped
00:35:27glossy
00:35:28sweet smelling

00:35:32from you
00:35:34because
00:35:34you're the bosses
00:35:36of the town
00:35:37essentially
00:35:37and I know that
00:35:39is
00:35:39this is so hard
00:35:42I mean
00:35:42there's nothing easy
00:35:43about this
00:35:44you know
00:35:44this is like
00:35:45you know
00:35:46when you're getting
00:35:46your legs waxed
00:35:47and they whip that thing
00:35:48off real fast
00:35:49that's
00:35:50what this is like

00:40:38let's delay the game
00:40:40and my lip would tremble
00:40:41and I said
00:40:41we have an injured quarterback
00:40:43let's give up
00:40:44no you know what we did
00:40:45we brought in
00:40:46the second string quarterback
00:40:47when he went down
00:40:48we brought in
00:40:48the third string quarterback
00:40:49and we went out
00:40:50and we whipped the pants
00:40:51off of Harry Truman High School
00:40:52and next week went out
00:40:53and mopped the floor
00:40:54with blessed heart of Mary
00:40:56and they went on
00:40:58to win the state championship
00:40:59to tell you the truth
00:41:06I haven't even thought about it
00:41:08not for a second
00:41:09have I even dwelled on the fact
00:41:11that the show's over
00:41:12I don't think about it
00:41:15I try not to think about it
00:41:17and therefore I don't
00:41:19because it's a very healthy way
00:41:21to deal with something
00:41:23that is ultimately
00:41:23not that important
00:41:25in the long run
00:41:25it's not
00:41:26not uh
00:41:27not important at all
00:41:28you know
00:41:29for me
00:41:30I'm just so sad
00:41:35for Corky
00:41:36you know
00:41:36I mean
00:41:36I think these creative people
00:41:38they're real emotional
00:41:40and um
00:41:41I think the important thing
00:41:43about show biz people
00:41:44is that you gotta have
00:41:45another life
00:41:46and I know
00:41:47you know
00:41:47he's got a wife
00:41:50I guess she's out of town
00:41:51um
00:41:52because I haven't seen her
00:41:54and I've never seen her
00:41:56so you know
00:41:57that's
00:41:58that could be the problem
00:41:59you know
00:41:59maybe she's just not supportive
00:42:01Corky
00:42:02without you
00:42:03there's no show
00:42:04without the show
00:42:05there's no celebration
00:42:06without celebration
00:42:07there's no Blaine
00:42:08so you see how
00:42:09it's a domino effect
00:42:11you know how dominoes do that
00:42:13without Blaine
00:42:14I got news for you
00:42:15there's no Missouri
00:42:16Blaine is the heart of Missouri
00:42:17what happens if Missouri goes down
00:42:19you tell me
00:42:21we need
00:42:22the magic
00:42:22back in the show
00:42:23is what we need
00:42:24and it ain't gonna happen
00:42:26with Lloyd
00:42:26Lloyd is a music teacher
00:42:28and he shops at Walmart
00:42:31he doesn't even support the town
00:42:32but the person who needs you the most
00:42:34is Blaine Fabin
00:42:36hmm
00:42:36hear hear
00:42:37and I'm not just saying that
00:42:39because I am
00:42:40okay
00:42:41okay
00:42:42I'm saying that because
00:42:43I just know that nobody
00:42:45can touch
00:42:46um
00:42:47that whole
00:42:49thing
00:42:50that whole thing
00:42:53hmm
00:42:53you could take a nickel
00:42:55and you could make it into a million dollars
00:42:58because this man is a genius
00:42:59and we cannot lose that
00:43:00look what you did with Barefoot
00:43:01when you came to this town
00:43:02did you have any budget then
00:43:03you didn't have a hundred thousand dollars then
00:43:05and look what happened to that show
00:43:06great show
00:43:07and what about Backdraft
00:43:08you took a little bit of cellophane
00:43:09and you made it into flames
00:43:11you can still feel the heat
00:43:12you know what
00:43:13you're not wrong
00:43:15we need you to take your magic wand
00:43:17and wave it
00:43:19and make this town special again
00:43:21is what we need
00:43:22will you do it
00:43:25please
00:43:26come on back Cork
00:43:27all right thank you thank you
00:43:52thank you
00:43:53thank you
00:43:55okay
00:43:56let's pretend
00:43:58that it never happened
00:43:59okay
00:43:59and let's just jump into
00:44:02covered wagons
00:44:02all right
00:44:03let's start from the dance part
00:44:04all right
00:44:04covered wagons
00:44:05all right
00:44:06in a funny way
00:44:16what the city council did
00:44:18was really give me a challenge
00:44:20and it's a challenge
00:44:21that I am going to accept
00:44:24it's like in the olden days
00:44:25in the days in France
00:44:27when men would slap each other
00:44:29with their gloves
00:44:30say you know
00:44:32d'artagnan
00:44:33you know
00:44:34how dare you talk to me like that
00:44:35you
00:44:36and smack him
00:45:02I did want to mention one thing
00:45:14specs
00:45:181845
00:45:20you know
00:45:21I think
00:45:22it's a little problem
00:45:24you know
00:45:24my glasses
00:45:28you're saying
00:45:30I don't think you should wear them
00:45:31don't wear them in the shelf
00:45:33mostly in covered wagons
00:45:35because I think that that's the one
00:45:36where
00:45:37it's just not as believable
00:45:39of course
00:45:40when you get further up
00:45:41in time
00:45:42historically
00:45:43it's
00:45:44I can see a couple of problems
00:45:46nothing major
00:45:47nothing that we can't solve
00:45:48one
00:45:49contrary to public opinion
00:45:53I don't see very well
00:45:55without my glasses
00:45:57so
00:45:57I'm thinking
00:45:58is that going to be a problem
00:46:00for me
00:46:01just look out
00:46:02and the other thing
00:46:04which is also a problem
00:46:07is
00:46:07I have a very lazy eye
00:46:11which
00:46:12these prescription glasses
00:46:14help correct
00:46:16getting off the horse
00:46:39is not a problem
00:46:39I can get off the horse
00:46:40like that
00:46:41but where I'm having a problem
00:46:42is sometimes the horse comes out
00:46:44and I can't get past the cow
00:46:45so I have to kind of
00:46:47you know
00:46:48do this when I come out
00:46:49gather round
00:46:50for I have news
00:46:51I don't know which is more life
00:46:52like the horse
00:46:53or Dr. Pearl
00:46:54you
00:46:57will you come in
00:46:59from here
00:47:00it just looks great
00:47:00I feel like
00:47:01you know
00:47:02a hero coming

00:47:14to turn around
00:47:15what are you saying
00:47:15well you should
00:47:16shh
00:47:17I understand that
00:47:19no I understand
00:47:20believe me
00:47:21I do understand
00:47:21what you can do
00:47:23is just say
00:47:24absolutely not
00:47:26do you understand that
00:47:28I don't believe that
00:47:30no I'm sorry
00:47:31I do not accept that
00:47:32that is not an answer
00:47:33no
00:47:34it's absolutely unacceptable
00:47:36that you would say this now
00:47:37not today
00:47:38no
00:47:39and that's the
00:47:42that's the way it is

00:54:19Steady!
00:54:21Gather round, for I have news.
00:54:24What news? What did your keen and perceptive eyes behold?
00:54:30Just up yonder there is a ridge.
00:54:33How high, ridge? I could not tell.
00:54:36For the sun had set and darkness fell before I reached its pinnacle.
00:54:40Then a strange thing happened.
00:54:44My nose started twitching.
00:54:47There's a mysterious scent in the night air.
00:54:51What kind of scent?
00:54:53What was this mysterious scent?
00:54:55It was the scent of salt water.
00:54:58Salt water?
00:55:02Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached our destination.
00:55:06We have reached the Pacific.
00:55:08Welcome to California!
00:55:17Grab your feller by the hand.
00:55:20Welcome you to the promised land.
00:55:23Grab your lady by the arm.
00:55:25Take her out behind the barn.
00:55:28Everybody dance!
00:55:32Everybody dance!
00:55:33Everybody dance!
00:55:34FIRE OF FIRE WEEKS comuns.
00:55:38It's nice!
00:55:40That's a good idea!
00:55:42Located in the park.
00:55:44No mówi ocean as gold!
00:55:46That's a good sail.
00:55:47Yeah.
00:55:48And a lighter place...
00:55:51He's a little niche-sized PT.
00:55:53Musik
00:56:23Musik
00:56:25Laptop
00:56:27Jep, Laptop
00:56:29Sixty years went by
00:56:31and the town of Blaine kept a growing
00:56:33and a changing. Every time
00:56:35he looked around a new house was going up
00:56:37a new family was moving in
00:56:39Oh hurry, Eddie. Oh I am trying
00:56:41to hurry. There we go
00:56:43You got my hat?
00:56:45Your hat, right here is your hat, darling
00:56:47McGillicuddy's Orchard became
00:56:49the Blaine Elementary School
00:56:51They even laid track for that newfangled invention,
00:56:55the Iron Horse,
00:56:56which brought a pretty important visitor to Blaine.
00:57:00Yay! It's President Finley!
00:57:06Good people of Blaine,
00:57:08they told me my next stop was Wichita,
00:57:11but I said, what about Blaine?
00:57:14Yay!
00:57:16I guess I need a new travel agent.
00:57:21Mr. President, in honor of our visit,
00:57:26your visit to our town,
00:57:29I present you humbly with this fair key to our city.
00:57:34Well, I do declare I believe the key to this city
00:57:36is larger than the city itself.
00:57:40Wait, Mr. President.
00:57:42Well, what have we here?
00:57:43It's a footstool. I make them.
00:57:47Well, isn't that interesting?
00:57:48I'll take this back to Washington with me,
00:57:50and every time I rest my feet,
00:57:53I'll think of Blaine.
00:57:55Yay!
00:57:57Hooray!
00:58:00Now, we all know that politicians
00:58:03aren't used to keeping their word.
00:58:05He's here. He's here.
00:58:07He's here. He's here.
00:58:08I told you he was in the cabin.
00:58:09Should we stand over again?
00:58:10He's a fancy-covered wagon.
00:58:11That's a new-covered wagon.
00:58:13Well, before you know it,
00:58:14everyone, rich and poor alike,
00:58:16had to have a Blaine stool in their home.
00:58:20The little town never knew what hit it.
00:58:22Footstool factories sprouted up like, uh,
00:58:25like toadstools.
00:58:27Everyone had a good job.
00:58:29Everyone was making a good wage.
00:58:32Blaine was on the map.
00:58:34By the pool
00:58:48In the school
00:58:50By the fires of yule
00:58:52It's the rule
00:58:53There's a stool
00:58:55There's a stool
00:58:56Tools are rare
00:58:57Once upon a time
00:58:59You'd find a chair
00:59:00A chair's for fools
00:59:02Everybody wants stools
00:59:06Stool-boos
00:59:07From the parlor to the pool
00:59:10In the center of a stool
00:59:13Everyone knows our name
00:59:18Working, building
00:59:20Never stopping, never sleeping
00:59:22Working, making
00:59:23Some for selling, some for keeping
00:59:25You will drool
00:59:26At the splendor of these magic stools
00:59:29It's the rule
00:59:31Every wife has a stool
00:59:33Oh, just three legs
00:59:35It's the thing for which a monarch banks
00:59:38Hark, your jewels
00:59:40Use the money for stools
00:59:43Stool-boos
00:59:45Just three legs
00:59:46It finds a sand
00:59:47Like a fever
00:59:49It's a stool
00:59:50And it's running out of the way
00:59:54Working, building
00:59:57Never stopping, never sleeping
00:59:59Working, making
01:00:01Some for selling, some for keeping
01:00:03Working, building
01:00:04Never stopping, never sleeping
01:00:06Working, making
01:00:08Some for selling
01:00:10Some for keeping
01:00:13I can't wait to see the second
01:00:31I can't wait to see the second
01:00:43Calf
01:00:44Alan
01:00:44His dramatic work
01:00:46I mean, I knew he was funny
01:00:48And I knew he could, you know
01:00:49Move, dance
01:00:50Because he's that way
01:00:52But I think his dramatical work
01:00:54Is so moving
01:00:55That, um
01:00:56Well, I mean
01:00:58I called Joyce
01:00:59And I said
01:00:59Joyce, bring Joshy
01:01:01Because I've got to feed him half time
01:01:02Because I'm just busted
01:01:03This is good
01:01:04Boy, they're moving
01:01:05They're dancing all over the place
01:01:07And the songs are very catchy
01:01:08Uh, very catchy
01:01:10I can't get
01:01:11A few of them out of my head
01:01:11Almost to the annoying point
01:01:14But I think
01:01:15I think it's good
01:01:16When a song is catchy
01:01:16From the
01:01:18Little experience I have
01:01:20In show business
01:01:20You know, I knew
01:01:22That Corky could act
01:01:23And he could direct
01:01:24And he could produce
01:01:24But who knew
01:01:25That he was gonna act
01:01:26And sing and dance
01:01:27You know, he can just do
01:01:28Everything there is to do
01:01:30And only other
01:01:30There's only one other person
01:01:32In the world
01:01:32That can do that
01:01:33And that's Barbara Streisand
01:01:34He is
01:01:35I don't know
01:01:38An inspiration to this town
01:01:40That's, that's what he is
01:01:41And I for one
01:01:43Am very glad to see
01:01:45That Johnny Savage
01:01:46Dropped out of the show
01:01:47Because a couple years ago
01:01:49He came in the drugstore
01:01:50And he tried to steal
01:01:50My stamp machine
01:01:51And that kid
01:01:52Is no good
01:01:53You can tell
01:01:54Just by his parents
01:01:55He's no good
01:01:56And he would not
01:01:56Have added anything
01:01:57To the show
01:01:58Where Corky, on the other hand
01:02:00Look at him
01:02:00Did you see
01:02:01God, I wish I was
01:02:02In this show
01:02:03I hear that French girls
01:02:26Are very pretty
01:02:28That they wear the finest of clothes
01:02:31I also hear that they are experts
01:02:34In the ways of love
01:02:35Ima, I'm going to fight for my country
01:02:39To fight
01:02:40And yes, perhaps die
01:02:42So that young men
01:02:44From here to Timbuktu
01:02:45Can feel the wind of freedom
01:02:48Blowing through their hair
01:02:49Oh, Monty
01:02:51I didn't mean to doubt you
01:02:52It's just sometimes
01:02:55I feel as if I don't really know you
01:02:58I would still pay
01:03:03A penny for your thoughts
01:03:09A dime for your dreams
01:03:12Would a shiny new quarter
01:03:15Buy a peek at your schemes
01:03:18And when you are away
01:03:22So far from my side
01:03:25I will cherish my penny's worth
01:03:29Till at last I'm your bride
01:03:32A penny for your thoughts
01:03:40Let's call it a deal
01:03:43I don't have any secrets
01:03:46You know how I feel
01:03:50That's it
01:03:51No, no, hey, here
01:03:51Curl right there
01:03:52The curl, you know where I like the curl
01:03:54Ron, I have to get myself ready
01:03:55There it is
01:03:55There it is
01:03:56Nice
01:03:57Now a little fluff here
01:03:58And you can work on yourself
01:04:00A penny for your thoughts
01:04:03It's settled and done
01:04:06I'd have offered a million
01:04:09I have done it for none
01:04:12I reckon we're in love
01:04:17And married we'll be
01:04:20And all for a penny
01:04:23A bright copper penny
01:04:26The penny that brought you
01:04:30To me
01:04:32A penny for me
01:05:02It was so good. I told you you'd be able to listen like that.
01:05:07You're so good. You lifted me up.
01:05:11Yes, after our brave fighting boys returned from the war,
01:05:14things got back to normal in Blaine.
01:05:17Until one summer night in 1946,
01:05:20when unexpected visitors put us back on the map.
01:05:30Where are we?
01:05:31How did we get here?
01:05:32Is this a dream?
01:05:38Look! What is it?
01:05:40I don't know. It looks like one of them new feed storage bins.
01:05:43That ain't no feed storage bin.
01:05:45How did it get here?
01:05:47It must have flew.
01:05:48But it don't have any wings.
01:05:50Then I guess it just dropped from somewhere up there.
01:05:55Citizens of Blaine, do not be alarmed.
01:05:58We will not harm you.
01:06:00We come in peace from a planet far, far away.
01:06:04A place we call Mars.
01:06:07I've heard of Mars.
01:06:09Where's that?
01:06:10Stand back and your queries will be answered.
01:06:13What do you want from us?
01:06:27Oh, good question, Earthling.
01:06:30It seemed like it was time for a change.
01:06:32Time to take a trip to see the exciting places in the galaxy.
01:06:38For you see, nothing ever happens on Mars.
01:06:42No sports or entertainment or swingin' bars.
01:06:47You stand around, you stand some more on a planet named for a Roman god of war.
01:06:55Nothing ever happens on Mars.
01:06:56Nothing ever happens on Mars.
01:06:57Nothing ever happens on Mars.
01:06:58No supersonic airplanes, no sporty cars.
01:07:02The sun comes up.
01:07:03The sun goes down.
01:07:04You can't go to the country.
01:07:05You can't go to town.
01:07:07You can't go to the country.
01:07:09You can't go to town.
01:07:11Boring, Boring, Boring, Boring, Boring, Boring, Boring, Boring
01:07:20Well, the town of Blaine has packed a lot in the last 150 years.
01:07:33We've had our ups and we've had our downs.
01:07:36We've seen our past and we look forward to the future.
01:07:40And when the challenges come, we'll greet them the way Americans always do, with grit, determination, and pride.
01:07:48Because that, my friends, is America.
01:07:51And nothing says America more to me than Blaine.
01:08:10We've seen America more.
01:08:17I've seen America more than Blaine.
01:08:20But if we're not the responsibility we'll take.
01:08:23We've seen America more than Blaine.
01:08:28We've seen America more than a Blaine.
01:08:33Jockey!
01:08:58Jockey!
01:09:03Sie sind so großartig, Sie sind so großartig, alle sind so großartig.
01:09:13Oh, Dr. Perl!
01:09:15You did it!
01:09:17I'm gonna get Mr. Guffman, I'll be right backstage.
01:09:28Hello, how are you?
01:09:29Hi!
01:09:30It's nice to meet you.
01:09:32Oh, you too.
01:09:33Well...
01:09:34Thank you so much, Mr. Mayor, thank you.
01:09:36How do you hear about this at the next mayor's conference?
01:09:37Thank you so much.
01:09:38Oh.
01:09:39Well, I know we have a lot of work to do.
01:09:41The first act means...
01:09:42It was magical.
01:09:43Thank you very much, Steve.
01:09:45Thank you so much.
01:09:46Thank you so much.
01:09:47We've got the first act again.
01:09:49It's just, you know, it's up and down.
01:09:50Kinda dipping in and out, and I know that.
01:09:52We just don't have the time, you know, to do everything.
01:09:54So, I'm gonna ask you point-blank.
01:09:56Do we have a shot to go to Broadway?
01:09:58Yes, I think so.
01:10:00Oh, ho, mamma mia.
01:10:02Oh, that is such good news.
01:10:03Oh, I can't tell you what news that is to me.
01:10:06Would you like to meet the cast?
01:10:07I'd like that, yeah.
01:10:08Oh, great.
01:10:09Come on with me, you.
01:10:11Adam, what are you doing to me now?
01:10:14Wonderful job.
01:10:15Good job.
01:10:16Good job.
01:10:18Everybody.
01:10:19Oh, my God.
01:10:20Oh, wow.
01:10:22Yes.
01:10:27Our cast.
01:10:28Thank you.
01:10:30You were just great.
01:10:31Oh.
01:10:32Great.
01:10:33Who?
01:10:34Well, I'd like, please, introduce yourselves.
01:10:39Jill, Jill Albertson.
01:10:40Oh, you were great.
01:10:42Mrs. Ron Albertson, I'm Ron Albertson.
01:10:44Pleasure performing for someone who really understands theater.
01:10:47This came a couple hours ago. I'm sorry, I'm just not getting it.
01:10:50Thank you. You're so pretty.
01:10:51Clifford Woolley.
01:10:52Mr. Woolley.
01:10:53Nice to meet you.
01:10:54Alan Pearl, you make me laugh.
01:10:57It's a delight to meet you, sir.
01:10:59Oh, well, I'm sure that Mr. Guffman would like to say a few words to us.
01:11:05Speech, speech, speech.
01:11:10I think there's some mistake.
01:11:11My name is Loomis, Roy Loomis.
01:11:13I'm down from Deming.
01:11:15I came down, my niece had her first baby.
01:11:17It's a boy, and that's what the balloon is for.
01:11:19And I just want to tell you how just absolutely wonderful you all were.
01:11:25And, uh, thank you, and, uh, I'll be seeing you, and bless you.
01:11:31He's going to love this.
01:11:33Oh, boy.
01:11:42Take her, uh, makeup off.
01:11:44Snowstorm in New York.
01:12:08All flights canceled.
01:12:12Fort Guffman.
01:12:12I think the, uh, one really important thing that I learned, uh,
01:12:39from my whole experience in working with Corky is that I do indeed have talent.
01:12:50And, uh, a couple of things, actually.
01:12:53B. I have to entertain.
01:12:58I have to entertain.
01:12:59And you, you have to go where you are needed.
01:13:04You have to go where the crowds are.
01:13:07And you have to go where the love is.
01:13:12And the love for me right now is, is in Miami.
01:13:17Not Blaine.
01:13:18Well, here we are, the land of dreams.
01:13:34And don't let anybody tell you dreams can't come true.
01:13:37We're an hour from the snow.
01:13:39We're 20 minutes from the ocean.
01:13:41Uh-huh.
01:13:41Two hours from Mexico.
01:13:43Uh-huh.
01:13:43Uh, and...
01:13:44Five hours from Vegas.
01:13:45Five hours from Las Vegas, and we're going to get there one of these days.
01:13:47As soon as we get a car.
01:13:48Yeah.
01:13:48We don't have a car yet.
01:13:49Who wants to add to the pollution?
01:13:51Yeah.
01:13:51We consider ourselves bi-coastal, if you consider the Mississippi River one of the coasts.
01:13:56Uh, what...
01:13:57Extras.
01:13:58Let's go.
01:13:58Over here.
01:13:59All right.
01:13:59Time to get back to work.
01:14:01That's what they're paying us for.
01:14:02Come on, kid.
01:14:02Why can't they refer us by name?
01:14:04Why can't they say, Ron?
01:14:06She'll over this way, please.
01:14:08Still the same paycheck.
01:14:09Hi.
01:14:10How you doing?
01:14:10All right.
01:14:11You're doing a great job, incidentally.
01:14:13Face towards the camera.
01:14:14Smile.
01:14:15Are you going to smile?
01:14:16I think we should have a line.
01:14:18I gave him some suggestions.
01:14:19He didn't let me get it.
01:14:20He's busy.
01:14:20Line dancing.
01:14:21We should be line dancing.
01:14:22That's a great idea.
01:14:23Quiet, please.
01:14:23All right.
01:14:25Get your finger out.
01:14:26Are you smiling?
01:14:27Quiet, please.
01:14:30I was on my way to New York, and then my dad got out of prison, which is good.
01:14:37He was supposed to be in there for 10 years, but I guess since he didn't kill anybody, he
01:14:43just ruined some property that they let him out after five.
01:14:48So, so it's, I'm here with my dad, and I've been thinking of ice cream and stuff and what
01:14:59I can do with it, maybe come up with, we have a blizzard and we have a breeze, we have derbies,
01:15:05and the derbies, and the derbies are really, oh, they've been doing derbies, you know, the chocolate dip for, I think 20 years or something.
01:15:13I really want to sort of make a healthy, low-fat or non-fat, um, healthy blizzard.
01:15:27The first thing I did when I moved back to New York City was to look up Mr. Guffman, and he was so sweet.
01:15:38And I think he felt a little guilty, too, because he's offered me the chance to audition for his new Broadway show, which is the revival of My Fair Lady.
01:15:48It's one of my favorite shows of all time.
01:15:50And the role is of Henry Higgins, the somewhat stern taskmaster, but he really likes her anyway, kind of thing guy, who teaches Liza how to speak correctly.
01:16:03And she, of course, is of the Cockney persuasion and drops her H's.
01:16:07And I've been working on that at home, the whole Cockney thing of, L-O-L-R-U, do you want to go to Artford, not live in this, L-O, and that kind of thing.
01:16:18And I'm, I think I'm honing in on it pretty close now.
01:16:21And I suppose that the cake and eat it too part of this whole story is that another dream of mine has come true,
01:16:28which is that I've gotten to open this shop where I have all my show business treasures and all my memorabilia.
01:16:37And this is, without a doubt, one of my favorite items, my dinner with Andre Action Figures.
01:16:44And what you can do, which is so cute, is you can reenact the whole scene, you know, where the two guys talk to each other and say, you know,
01:16:57Oh, I'm sure glad you found a good restaurant.
01:17:00You know, it's so hard these days to get in.
01:17:02You know, who do you know?
01:17:03Oh, I just called, made a call, spur of the moment.
01:17:08Oh, you, you can always get a reservation.
01:17:12You know, that's not from the movie, but you can make up your own dialogue, which is one of the great things about Action Figures.
01:17:19I'm trying to get, it's very rare, the one, the action figures for Das Boot, because I love to do that whole, you know, kind of claustrophobic thing inside the sub,
01:17:31where they're, you know, dashkanda, dashmustenste, you know, that whole German thing.
01:17:36I mean, can't speak German, but it sounds like, you know, sort of a bunch of barnyard animals, you know, making that noise and sweating.
01:17:46Over here, these are my big heads, I call them, starting with Anthony Michael Hall, one of the Brat Packers.
01:17:53In fact, there's, in the background there, there's, uh, Andrew McCarthy.
01:18:00Over here, some new lunchboxes we've gotten in, the Remains of the Day lunchbox, and the kids, they're just having such a good time with these, you know.
01:18:09Kids don't like eating lunch at school, but if they've got a Remains of the Day lunchbox, they're a whole lot happier.
01:18:15We'll be right back.
01:18:45We'll be right back.
01:19:15We'll be right back.
01:19:45We'll be right back.
01:20:15We'll be right back.
01:20:45We'll be right back.
01:21:15We'll be right back.
01:21:45We'll be right back.
01:22:15We'll be right back.
01:22:17We'll be right back.
01:22:19We'll be right back.
01:22:47We'll be right back.
01:22:49We'll be right back.
01:22:51We'll be right back.
01:22:53We'll be right back.
01:22:55We'll be right back.
01:22:57We'll be right back.
01:22:59We'll be right back.
01:23:01We'll be right back.
01:23:03We'll be right back.
01:23:05We'll be right back.
01:23:07We'll be right back.
01:23:09We'll be right back.
01:23:11We'll be right back.
01:23:13We'll be right back.
01:23:15We'll be right back.
01:23:17We'll be right back.
01:23:19We'll be right back.
