00:00Now, we're turning our attention to e-scooters.

00:02They have soared in popularity around the world,

00:05but the rise in the number of accidents due to misuse and even deaths

00:09has reignited a debate about how safe they really are.

00:13And some are even calling for a complete ban on the vehicles.

00:16To chat about this, Michael and Wissam.

00:19First of all, Michael, what do you make of this?

00:21A ban completely on e-scooters?

00:22So I would be for the ban completely.

00:25And I would say that because I live in Dubai and I've been here for a long time.

00:30And these guys, and I don't want to sound like the old man yelling,

00:33get off my lawn, but I'm going to sound like that.

00:36These guys can fly at pretty good speeds.

00:39And I know that there are certain areas in town where there are marks,

00:44lanes on the sidewalk, the pavement,

00:47where these guys should be driving or where I should be walking.

00:51And when you come across the intersection between the pedestrian

00:56and the person on the e-scooter,

00:57it's like you're driving.

00:59You're constantly taking a quick look over your shoulder

01:01to make sure that you can cross over.

01:04Because College Times reported today that in the first half of this year,

01:11there have been 13 deaths related to e-scooter accidents.

01:15Whereas last year, in all 12 months, there were 10 deaths.

01:18So the number of fatalities has gone up an awful lot

01:24for a city that doesn't have a lot of pedestrian traffic,

01:28but is having a lot more scooter traffic.

01:31Do you have one?

01:31Do you have an electric scooter?

01:32I do not.

01:33Okay.

01:33But do you have a bike?

01:35I do not.

01:35Because I would argue that deaths from bikes are also on the up as well.

01:39So there is the argument that it's a death on the road situation that is up.

01:43So yes, but bicyclists or cyclists now have a better understanding about being on the road,

01:51and I think motorists also as well.

01:54And when there is a cyclist, you're not going to be able to accelerate at a great speed.

02:00There is a rhythm to the way in which you cycle as the traffic moves along.

02:06Whereas with a scooter, they will cut in and out of traffic.

02:10They'll go on the sidewalk.

02:11They'll go off the sidewalk.

02:12And they can accelerate quite quickly.

02:14And they'll go off the sidewalk.
