According to Swiss researchers, the way people type and use their computer mouse can be better
00:05
stress indicators than their heart rate. How we type on our keyboard and move our mouse seems to
00:10
be a better predictor of how stressed we feel in an office environment than our heart rate,
00:15
says study author Mara Nagelin. Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich
00:21
observed 90 participants in the lab performing realistic office tasks, including planning
00:26
appointments or recording and analyzing data. After recording the participants' mouse and keyboard
00:31
behavior as well as their heart rates, the study concluded that stressed people type and operate
00:37
their mouse differently from relaxed people. People who are stressed move the mouse pointer more often
00:42
and less precisely and cover longer distances on the screen. The study highlights the urgency of
00:48
finding reliable ways of detecting heightened stress on the job. Those affected often don't realize that
00:54
their physical and mental resources are dwindling until it's too late.
