00:46Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:53We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:07As a prelude to the fifth ordinary session of the Cuban Parliament, legislators have started debates focused on the country's economic and social development
01:15Over two days, parliamentarians gathered in 11 permanent working committees will discuss more than 80 issues of impact for the Cuban society such as energy situation, food production, water supply, transportation and health.
01:31On Monday, President Miguel Díaz-Canel attended the Economic Affairs Committee where the recent performance of the economic plan was assessed.
01:39The new session of parliament to begin on Wednesday, July 16, proposes a comprehensive evaluation of the government program aimed at correcting distortions and reporting the national economy.
01:51On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheyman addressed the recent tariff letters issued by the government of the United States stressing these were sent to all countries in the world and reinforcing Mexico's trade strategy which has 70 as a non-negotiable.
02:13In this context, what should we do as a government? First, we should defend the strategy we have been pursuing because it is producing results. Second, we should inform the Mexican people that there is a working group on security issues where we have always placed sovereignty as a non-negotiable principle.
02:38And we are also working on trade issues. We hope that these working groups will enable us to reach an agreement. And if not, then we will have to make other decisions.
02:57In the United States, authorities said nine people died in a fire at the Gabriel House assisted living home in Fall River, Massachusetts. The flames broke out around 9.30 p.m. local time on Sunday.
03:10Fort River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon added that when they arrived there, they found heavy flames and smoke coming through the main entrance and several people hanging out of the windows. Over 30 people were rushed to hospitals and five firefighters suffered minor injuries. Investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the fire.
03:31That's what folks need to understand. This was not a situation where teams arrived and people were able to get out easily. All of these people needed assistance. As you saw, many were in wheelchairs, many were immobile, many had oxygen tanks. They were severely compromised individuals in this assisted living facility, which made it all the more challenging. And you can imagine,
04:00a fire raging. You're dealing with a fire raging. You're dealing with a smoke inhalation, which we know was devastating. Five of our guys had to be treated at the hospital. But just how precarious this was with oxygen tanks, so many of them on and the presence of fire. It's unbelievable that there wasn't an even greater loss of life.
04:30The U.S. is on alert for severe windstorms that could cause flooding in several states. The National Weather Service warned of the return of the risk of flash flooding in the Southern Plains and the Midwestern United States, including parts of Central Texas, as well as a widespread thunderstorm.
04:53Outside it is advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel unless flee in an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order. The Weather Forecast Center also protects intense heat over the next few days, especially in the eastern and western United States.
05:10Likewise, the weather in Mexico is once again setting off alerts. Precisely on Monday, weather forecasters warned that the interaction of the Mexican monsoon with tropical waves 11 and 12 has created extreme conditions that extend from the northwest to the southeast of the country.
05:32In this context, the National Weather Commission and the National Weather Service have alerted the population of possible torrential rains, hail and strong winds.
05:42In this context, outside it is specified that although rain prevails in several regions, other areas of the country are facing an intense heat wave that could reach 45 degrees centigrade.
05:53In Russia, authorities maintain a fire alert in several regions due to forecasts of warm weather in the coming days. Russian authorities have reinforced preventive measures, including air patrols and restrictions on access to high-risk areas.
06:13During the last 24 hours, forest fire departments have extinguished 65 fires covering an area of 1,091 hectares. It is expected that the extinguishing work will continue in the next hours while the emergency teams monitor possible new ignitions.
06:36In Syria, authorities announced that they have brought under control the forest fires that affected thousands of hectares of forest and farmland in Latakia. The flames, fanned by a heat wave, devastated thousands of hectares, but the joint effort of local teams and international support succeeded in containing the main fires.
06:55The Ministry of emergency details that the fires that started on July 2 consumed approximately 50,000 hectares in the west of the country. Despite the difficulties, no fatalities were reported, although several communities were evacuated as a precaution. For his part, the Minister of Emergency highlighted the work of the rescue teams as well as the support received from countries such as Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.
07:21And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on Tik Tok at Telesur English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
07:37Welcome back to From the South.

08:25The United Nations Children's Fund reported in June more than 5,800 children with malnutrition in the Strip.
08:33In view of this, the International Institute demands the Israeli regime to end the blockade and allow the access of aid immediately and on a larger scale.
08:50Health officials in Palestine confirmed that at least 47 people were killed on Monday in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip.
08:58Among them are 27 people killed in strikes in central and southern Gaza, according to published reports.

09:22In addition to armed attacks, the Israeli regime is continuing its offensive against the Palestinian people by restricting access to food, drinking water, fuel and other humanitarian aid.
09:34An Israeli plan to create a so-called humanitarian city in the ruins of Rafah in the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip is receiving widespread backlash from international organizations and local authorities.
09:55The plan unveiled by Tel Aviv's Defense Minister Israel Katz last week entailed the relocation of about 600,000 displaced Palestinians currently living in the alleged humanitarian zone of Al-Mawazi near Rafah.
10:10To achieve it, army representatives met with cabinet members on Sunday to establish a possible timeline, estimating the city's creation would cost between 10 to 15 million dollars and take more than a year.
10:24Shortly after the announcement was made, various humanitarian agencies, lawyers and international leaders condemned the plan, calling it a concentration camp and a blueprint for crimes against humanity.
10:37In other information, the Foreign Ministry of Iran denounced the interference of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the negotiations with the United States on Teheran's nuclear program.
10:57Precisely, the Persian Authority's statements came after the Israeli Prime Minister openly dictated instructions on what Washington should say in its talks on Iran's nuclear program.
11:09The Foreign Ministry condemned Netanyahu's claims as arrogant and emphasized that Iran will never accept accusations from individuals wanted by international bodies for their crimes against humanity.

11:38In Syria, the Foreign Ministry reported over 80 dead and 100 others injured amidst fighting between Bedouin tribes and local fighters in the predominantly Druze city of Suwaida.
11:51The clashes took place during Sunday night near the Al-Thala military airport and the bridge of Hazem village.
11:58As a result, authorities registered massive displacement in the region, forcing residents to flee from Kalakala village to Suwaida town.
12:08Local media confirmed the armed takeover of Al-Sura village, while local factions managed to regain control of Al-Thaira village in the west of the province.
12:18The United Nations denounced increased violence in Myanmar displacing more than 150,000 Rohingya refugees to Bangladesh.
12:36The United Nations Refugee Agency noted that the arrival of these refugees is the largest in the shortest period of time since 2017,
12:45when some 750,000 people fled violence in Rakhine state.
12:50In this regard, the United Nations Agency warned about the serious deterioration of humanitarian conditions in the Cox's Bazar refugee camps in Bangladesh.
12:59The United Nations Refugee Agency report reveals that the new arrivals add up to nearly one million Rohingya refugees living in extremely precarious conditions in overcrowded camps.
13:11After two days of violence, the Spanish government immobilized civil guard agents and local police officers in the Murcia municipality of Torre Pacheco to prevent further attacks by the far right against migrants.
13:30On Sunday night, a strong police presence was established at the entrance to the San Antonio neighborhood.
13:37The measure comes after on Friday and Saturday Moroccan migrants in the neighborhood were attacked by people from outside the town.
13:44According to the government representative in the region of Murcia Mariola Guevara, six individuals were arrested.

14:21In this sense, the Central American representation presented to the Europeans a path of action to achieve a greater opening of markets and investment,
14:31a priority action for both regions in the current scheme of new tariffs and economic pressures.

16:13The tariffs at about 100%, you'd call them secondary tariffs.
16:17And we've made a deal today, and I'm going to have Mark speak about it,
16:20but we've made a deal today where we are going to be sending them weapons and they're going to be paying for them.
16:26The United States will not be having any payment made.
16:31We're not buying it, but we will manufacture it and they're going to be paying for it.
16:36Our last meeting of a month ago was very successful in that they agreed to 5%,
16:41which is more than a trillion dollars a year, so they have a lot of money.
16:45And these are wealthy nations. They have a lot of money and they want to do it,
16:49they feel very strongly about it, and we feel strongly about it too.
16:52This is again Europeans stepping up. So I've been in contact with many countries,
16:56I can tell you that at this moment Germany, massively, but also Finland and Denmark and Sweden and Norway,

19:16after corruption allegations made by General Magwanassi.
