Crista Cain after winning gold for the Isle of Man in the women's 10,000 metres
Transcript
00:00Krista, I've been to a couple of Ireland games now, but that has to be one of the most dominant
00:04performances I've ever seen.
00:07Yeah, I wasn't expecting that.
00:08I thought there was going to be a right battle, so it went out hard from the off, to be honest.
00:12That's a bit of an understatement.
00:13I think you'd lapped half of the field by about just after halfway mark.
00:18Was that always your game plan?
00:19Well, I wasn't sure.
00:20I've obviously checked the competitors in the field, and there's some really fast girls
00:24out there.
00:25You just never know what anyone's going to do on the day, so I went out with my strategy
00:29to try and lead from the front.
00:31Kept checking over my shoulder in the first few laps and realised quite quickly I was
00:36a little bit ahead, so a bit of confidence and just hoped that I could hold it throughout.
00:40And, of course, to go with the gold medal comes an Ireland games record.
00:43That's a smashed Ireland games record, we might add, just under a minute quicker than
00:48the old standard.
00:49That's fantastic.
00:49Buzzing with that, yeah.
00:50I mean, 35 was what I was aiming for, but on a day like today with the heat, I mean, I've
00:56done the heat training, but yeah, you just don't know how you're going to perform when
01:00the sun's shining on your back.
01:03Finally, this is your first Ireland games.
01:05Are you enjoying it?
01:06Is it a bit different to the, obviously, you're usually a marathon specialist, so the track
01:10must be slightly different to what you're used to?
01:11Different dynamic altogether, yeah, and just the fact that you're loop on loop on loop.
01:16It does get into your head a little bit.
01:17I was counting to begin with.
01:18I did lose track with the lap counter there, but to be honest, I wasn't doing the math.
01:23I was like, it's just like, get through, but yeah, I guess the difference is just having
01:28the same crew, like the same support the whole way around.
01:31It's great to have everyone from the team, my half marathon crew, they were making a lot
01:35of noise down that bottom corner, so yeah, and the guys from Orkney, they've just been
01:39so supportive, to hear everyone's shouts, it's just been great.
01:42And looking ahead to the half marathon on Friday, does this make you a bit of a marked
01:46woman now?
01:47I'd say out of the three, so I've also got the 5,000 on Wednesday.
01:50I'd say out of the three, I was probably more confident with the half, because the distance
01:56is my bag, but yeah, we'll see if the legs show up after a hectic week.
02:01Well, a tremendous performance again, Krista, well done.
02:04Thank you so much.
